"the new yorker" magazine, obtained this secretly-recorded audio during a sting operation by the nypd. weinstein is heard admitting to inappropriately touching an italian model. it has been verified by abc news. >> you're used to that? >> reporter: this misdemeanor sexual abuse case was never prosecuted, according to the d.a.'s office, the audio was insufficient to prove a crime under new york law.

fo this morning on "world news now," the deadly and destructive wildfires sweeping across northern california. homes and businesses burned to the ground, and there are new evacuation orders overnight and high winds returning today. and new tension between the president and his secretary of state. days after rex tillerson was accused of having called the president a moron, the president is now challenging tillerson to an iq test. and a couple discovers a hidden camera in an air b and b home. they were reptding while on vacation. >> and the camera was pointed right at their bed. and there's no hiding from mom, especially if you're a big star like seth rogen. hear what she did to shame him into calling her back.

that's in the skippy -- skinny on this wednesday, october 11th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we're going to start things off with the overwhelming devastation in california. it is now blamed for at least 17 deaths. and still many people are unaccounted for. >> this is what it looked like before the flames erupted. a lot of vegetation there. and take a look now. home after home burned to the ground there. it's hardly recognizable. and the fires are still raging, sending thousands fleeing. donya baucus has more. >> reporter: the out of control fires now twice the size of washington, d.c., stretching firefighters thin. >> we have folks on the fire line starting their third shift right now that have not been relieved. >> reporter: sunday, the so-called diablo winds pushed hot, dry air across california,

exploding in size so quickly many didn't have time to evacuate. >> we got out without anything except for our dogs and medicine. >> reporter: nancy cook returns to what's left of her home, sifting through the rubble, trying to salvage anything she can find. >> this is the kitchen. >> reporter: across sonoma county, entire neighborhoods are now unrecognizable. at least 2,000 residences, businesses like this winery and hotels destroyed. >> it's with sorrow that i tell you today that we have confirmed two fatalities. charles and sara rippey, ages 100 and 98. >> reporter: the rippeys were married for 75 years. tuesday, their son mike helped sift therough their home. >> my father, he never made it to her room. and even if he had made it, there was no way he was going to leave her. >> reporter: in southern california, firefighters finally getting the upper hand. dowsing hotspots in the charred

most problematic area. by friday we'll have more moisture, that's a little bit of a help for us to not have to deal with so much dry air and so much of the dry winds, but now here's the monkey wrench to the whole thing. unfortunately, the flow changes. the high pressure system strengthens, the offshore winds change and the coast warms back up and it becomes even drier, once again, increasing the fire danger as we go into the weekend. kendis, diane? we have new images of an unprecedented show of force by the u.s. against north korea. the pictures show two bombers taking off from guam on the way to the sea of japan. it's the first time japanese and south korean fighters flew alongside u.s. planes. president trump and military officials have been discussing options on dealing with pyongyang. and the u.s. navy has fired the commander and executive director of the "uss mccain."

the warship's top two officers. it collided in august killing ten sailors and injuring five more. in a statement, they called it preventible, saying the commanding officer exercised poor judgment and the executive officer exercised poor leadership. president trump is firing back at republican senator bob corker, mocking him with a new nickname, and the president appeared to take a swipe at the secretary of state. but the white house insists he was only joking. abc's jonathan karl with details. >> reporter: president trump seemed to lob a new insult at his new secretary of state after the report that rex tillerson called him a quote, moron. i think it's fake news, the president told forbes, but if he did that, i guess we'll have to compare iq tests, and i can tell you who's going to win. the president was asked if he was undercutting his own secretary of state. >> no, i don't believe in undercutting people. thank you very much everybody. >> do you still have confidence? >> yes. >> reporter: but the new comments came after he said he

would like tillerson to be quote, a little bit tougher. >> why would the president want someone who is not tough or particularly smart as secretary of state. >> the president never implied that the secretary of state was not incredibly intelligent. he made a joke, nothing more than that. >> reporter: the white house insists the relationship is fine, but that's not what they're saying about republican senator bob corker, who infuriated the president by saying this to the "new york times." >> he doesn't realize that, you know, we could be heading toward world war iii with the kinds of comments that he's making. >> the failing "new york times" set little bob corker up by recording his conversation, the president tweeted, was made to sound a fool, and that's what i'm dealing with. and we're now learning it was corker who asked the interview to be recorded. and now two republican senators,

the only two so far, have come forward to defend the president. both of those senators are up for reelection next year. jonathan karl, the white house. police say a texas tech student has confessed to killing a police officer. 19-year-old hollis daniels was arrested for drugs. inside the station he pulled out a gun and shot officer floyd east jr. he is charged with capital murder and held on a $5 million bond. we're learning new details about an alleged airport bombing plot in north carolina. the suspect confessed to leaving a bomb at the asheville airport. michael estes said he wanted to find a war on u.s. soil. in indiana, a couple vacationing found hidden cameras in their a airbnb bedroom. they noticed something weird about the smoke detector in their bedroom. it was a camera pointed directly at their bed. the homeowner has been charged with one count of video voyeurism.

the nhl's newest franchise played an emotional home opener. in las vegas. the golden knights played tribute to the victims of last week's massacre. they replaced all the advertising on the boards with the message you see there, "vegas strong." >> they escorted first responders onto the ice, and a moment of silence, one second for every victim killed. and the nfl is preparing to take on the take a knee protest. >> roger goodell sent a letter to team owners that reads in part, we believe everyone should stand for the national anthem. we need to move past this controversy. it goes on to say that the nfl has developed a plan that will be reviewed next week. goodell's statement came on the same day the president asked on

twitter why the nfl gets massive tax breaks while in his opinion disrespecting the flag and the country. mike ditka has jumped into the national anthem debate. he told jim gray on westwood one's radio pregame program that all of a sudden it's become a big deal now about oppression. there's been no oppression in the last 100 years that i know of, ditka insisted he wasn't condemning anyone but urged players to protest when the game is over. >> and the rapper eminem is criticizing the president for inflaming the nfl protest. >> this is getting a lot of attention overnight. he went beyond that issue, including colin kaepernick and lebron james. this is all at the b.e.t. hip-hop awards, he calls it his form of distraction. in a rap he said the president gets an enormous reaction when he attacks the nfl so we focus on that instead of talking puerto rico and gun reform for nevada.
