idea. plus the famous luxury label changes its name. an elk sandwich? one fast food giant's new idea. and we do say good morning, everyone, on this thursday. we start with breaking news in northern california's fire zone. heavy winds pushing the flames into new territory as the death toll rises. >> nearly a dozen fires are tearing through wine country forcing entire towns to evacuate. at least 23 people are confirmed dead and officials say the worst is far from over. abc's maggie rulli joins us from santa rosa. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: dan and kendis, good morning. overnight new evacuation orders have forced thousands of more residents to flee their homes and those who are allowed to come back are often finding this, their home, cars, everything completely destroyed.

22 fires are still burning in california pushing firefighters to their limits, unable to gain control of the flames they battle against the wind. >> we're trying to make a path forward so it comes up to that path and stops. >> reporter: the numbers are staggering. over 170,000 acres, roughly four times the washington, d.c. have burned. over 20,000 displaced. over 3500 structures damaged or destroyed. residents who have been able to return to their hopes are finding there's nothing left. >> everybody's house is gone. >> reporter: but this iraq war veteran did find one cherished item he came looking for. >> your personal dog tags. >> the ones i deployed with. >> wow. >> after i deployed i gave them to my dad. >> reporter: in the heart of wine country officials went door urges residents to get out. >> evehe wind that's going to come our way and

we, you know, might end up losing the house. >> reporter: the wine industry in california employs hundreds of thousands and right now it's too early to estimate the damage they've done to the $50 billion a year industry. >> this is where all the wines remain and termed. >> reporter: while most are burping in the northern part of the state several fires have broke on out further south closing major highways around los angeles. we are in the middle of another that's the highest possible alert issued by the national weather service and there have been firefighters out here all night long working 24/7 trying to make sure that devastation like this does not happen to yet another neighborhood. now, in addition to trying to save all of these homes, firefighters are also working to save historical artifacts and landmark, in particular there's one spanish mission, a church dating all the way back to 1823. it is just one of many treasured sites here in sonoma and the

surrounding areas. crews have been removing artifacts trying to save them. these winds a just continuin pi very dry. >> the firefighters have a definitely. maggie rulli, thanks, maggie. now to washington where president trump is poised to sign an executive order on health care today. it's expected to offer americans more health insurance options with cheaper rates and promote competition. it could affect small businesses that band together to buy insurance but some experts say the order may further destabilize the obamacare markets. we're expecting more details late they are morning. the president is poised to make a big announcement on the iran nuclear deal. >> launching a new attack on the media, which critics call an attack on the free press while he makes a new push for sweeping tax cuts. abc's lana zak is covering it all and it is a lot. she joins us from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, diane and kendis.

there's no shortage of stories coming out of washington now. the president on that last point has previously said nobody lovee does. but his latest words have people wondering if he actually is intending to threaten the very freedom of the institution he claims to love. as the president campaigned for his tax deal. >> we want lower taxes, bigger paychecks. >> reporter: he also hinted at a major foreign policy change. >> i'll also be announcing, as you know, my statement and what we'll be doing with respect to the iran deal speaking of badly negotiated deals, okay. >> reporter: abc news has learned the presidents expected to decertify the iran deal as early as friday. but democrats and some republicans disagree saying it's the best way to get international inspectors into those nuclear sites. >> as flawed as the deal is, i believe we must now enforce the hell out of it. >> reporter: earlier in the day the president vented his

frustration with an nbc report that claimed u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson called the president a moron after he suggested increasing the u.s. nuclear stockpiles. >> i never discussed increasing it. i wanted it in perfect shape. that was just fake news by nbc. >> reporter: the president going further suggesting nbc and others could lose their ability to broadcast tweeting with all the fake news coming out of nbc and the networks at what point is it appropriate to challenge their license? bad for country. in response, fcc commissioner jessica rosenworcel said not how it works and freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our democracy. hope my fcc colleagues can be on the same page with the first a.m. . at least one prominent republican is firing back. ben sasse saying to the president, quote, are you recanting the oath you took on january 20th to preserve, protect and defend the first amendment? diane, kendis. >> ben sasse with a critical statement overnight.

linsey davis, abc news, new york. we have two more headlines concerning ben affleck under new scrutiny since condemning harvey weinstein. affleck has apologized after being accused of groping actress hilly burton on mtv in 2003. meanwhile, a canadian tv host is now defending affleck after a video from 2004 came to light showing him making sexual remarks to her. she says it was all an act for publicity. a mother from michigan has lost primary custody of her son after being jailed for five days for refusing to get him vaccinated. rebecca bredow was found in contempt of court after the dispute with his ex-husband. their son ended up getting four immunizations while his mother was behind bars. she says shek by the court's decision to grant her ex-husband joint custody. >> i feel a little spun around right now. i'm in shock because i was expecting to get him home today. >> do you still stand by your choices that you made beforehand? >> i do, absolutely. i still stand by my choices

>> i said if you want to do this we can make it happen. >> reporter: the unlikely duo limped for a block before al fredo martinez on the job for 18 months saw them an asked if he could help. >> he had made a joke or something and said, i wish i had a cane. and i don't know, we all looked over, one of us looked over, i'm like, folding chair. >> with the chair as his cane it took them an hour to walk the final two miles to give him a break from the pain. they talked about their families and how officer siska was about to become a father next month. he used a phone to call his wife who recorded him hopping on his right leg across the finish line as he recovers in the hospital, he says it's unclear if he'll ever be able to run marathons again but so grateful to the officers. >> when i look back i said i met two officers and i left with two friends. >> very cool for edward and the
