for the first time we have heard from his mother. she talked today to "action news" reporter vernon odom who is at police headquarters and vernon, what did she have to say? >> reporter: jim, she said a number of things including this. no mother should have to endure this. it's not right. it's not right, she said, my first born has been taken from me. >> (crying). >> reporter: shamika smith and her family tried desperately to console each other outside aria torresdale hospital. her son, 16-year-old messiah chiverton remains on life support, the doctors saying they cannot do anything to prevent the inevitable. he sustained a gunshot wound to the head wednesday afternoon in the 2100 block of maggie avenue in what police say was a confrontation between teens from different high schools. >> i really just want them to just stop the violence. this don't make no sense.

i shouldn't be here. no mother should have to go through this. like this isn't right. this isn't right. >> he played football. he boxed. he went to school. he was loving. all of my grandchildren love him to death. >> reporter: the gunman was 18-year-old muhammad goode who was was chased down by a police officer who saw the incident. police have charged goode with attempted murder but that will be upgraded to murder one. students free to travel the city at will after school is dismissed is a serious problem police say. >> part of the issue is a lot of public -- the school kids have the free access trans passes and they're roaming over the city in after school hours and we're experiencing some problems with it here and there. >> reporter: as for fast acting police work in this case, chiverton's family is reaching out in gratitude. >> another person that stands out for me is the police officer that drove my grandson to this hospital. i just want to know what his name is so i can just hug him and thank him.

'cause he wasn't left on the sidewalk to be a spectacle for everyone to see. >> reporter: jim, muhammad guide will be denied any chance at bail. i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news" at police headquarters in center city. >> thank you vernon. here's one of the questions of the day. might the u.s. pull out of the iran nuclear deal? well, president trump moved closer to doing that today. trump moved to decertify the iran nuclear deal which in effect forces congress to come up with a better plan within 60 days. the current agreement deals only with iran and nuclear bombs but trump wants the agreement to cover a range of what the president calls iran's destructive actions. trump said if congress cannot arrive at a better agreement, he will terminate the deal. world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the iran nuclear situation,

that is next at 6:30 right after "action news." we just received an update from the monroe township school district in gloucester county. classes had been canceled all week because of mold. now we know what the plans are for next week. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live at the school administration building in williamstown and bob what's the story there? >> reporter: well, jim, we just got test results back in all across the district. testing their buildings for mold. now we know class will resume next week on tuesday. after a week of canceled classes the monroe township public schools will reopen next tuesday the 17th. that's minus mol holly glen elementary. parents we spoke with are hopeful this can serve as a learning lesson for a better plan moving forward and more community involve. >> regular checks, regulations accountability. >> i hope that the town, you know, maybe gets together and goes to more school board meetings instead of when they just feel it's needed.

>> reporter: according to the district web site after a week of work testing for mold the district wide test results show the schools except for holly glen are fit for students and staff to be inside the findings released to the township and 6300 students in the district plus more staff comes after a frustrating week. first holly glen was closed for mold. then pictures inside williamstown middle school emerged on facebook show ceiling tiles saturated with black mold. after that many parents decided to pull their children out of the building until tests were done. the administration is deeming them safe. parents say they wish the district had been more opened. what has the district told you. >> really hasn't gotten any updates. >> there's been no could you tell us calls to the house. >> i haven't heard anything yet but i'm sure that they're going to go do the right thing and get the kids back in school as soon as possible. >> reporter: and there you hear they have again classes set to resume next tuesday. now for the teachers they're going to go back on monday its

going to be some kind of an in service type like day. as for the students at holly glen elementary, they're going to move forward with that plan to send them to the other elementary schools throughout the district. reporting live in williamstown, bob brooks channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you bob. this is new at 6:00 the radnor township board of commissioner has called a special meeting for monday at 6:00. the commissioners will be electing a new board president because of in man, the current president, phil ahr arraigned on wednesday on various child pornography and child sexual abuse charges. the commissioners asked him to submit his resignation by today. ahr has not done that. monday the commissioners will replace ahr as president but by law cannot kick him off the board. the pennsylvania state police are trying to connect stolen property with its rightful owners. police say they recovered a garage full of goods, most of the nearly 150 items were power tools, weed whackers and

leaf blowers. investigators believe the suspect stole the tools over a two-year period in delaware and chester counties. police say victims need a receipt, a serial number or other identification to recover their stolen property. the pennsylvania turnpike commission is preparing to conduct a unique operation this weekend on the northeast extension. but they'll have to close a big chunk of the roadway between 9:00 tonight and 4:00 a.m. monday. live in plymouth meeting is "action news" reporter john rawlins. john, a weekend of inconvenience but a big payoff. >> reporter: that's the theory absolutely. they are replacing a pair of turnpike bridges that are north of allentown. now, conventional replacement would take about a year and they would have cattle chutes lane drops and all kinds of problems. what they're going to do is shut down a portion of the toll way and then slide new bridges into place. but be forewarned. if you plan on driving north of allentown expect delays.

>> it is going to be slow, yes. best advice we can give is that we are asking drivers and the traveling public to avoid this region if at all possible as far as the pennsylvania turnpike. >> reporter: starting at 9:00 the northeast extension from exit 74 mahoning valley to 56, lehigh valley, will be shut down for 55 hours. the official detour marked here in blue use u.s. 22 to the east to route 33 to the north to i80. so what's going on? this time lapse video from a similar western pennsylvania project can give you an idea. crews first build a pair of replacement bridges parallel to existing worn out bridges. once traffic stops, crews will demolish the old bridges and the new units will slowly slide into place. >> the slide of the two bridges will happen tomorrow morning at some point. >> reporter: the plan, the new bridges to be ready for traffic 4:00 a.m. monday. meanwhile congestion on two lane portions of the blue route and adjoining i-95 south on the mind of penndot

secretary leslie richards today. >> penndot is now planning to implement dynamic part time shoulder use. >> reporter: the idea to reduce congestion and emissions penndot seriously considering upgrading the paved shoulder turning it into a part time travel lane. penndot has looked at i-66 near washington, d.c. where now overhead signs signal when drivers can legally use the shoulder as a traffic lane. >> but we are hoping to come up with is a plan that will allow us to add a lane in each direction on the blue route when it is needed. >> reporter: now, officially they have to do a study of all of this. penndot already looking at the idea on the schuylkill expressway as well but it could take years to sort out. more immediate issues for drivers tonight and this weekends, the northeast extension north of allentown again the roads there for about 17 or 18 miles of it will be closed for the entire weekend. be forewarned if you're heading north, you're going to expect detours and delays. live in plymouth meeting, john rawlins channel6 "action news"

>> ♪ >> and we have breaking news live from chopper6. philadelphia fire crews are on the scene at the patha, the pennsylvania academy of fine arts in center city after smoke was seen coming from the seventh floor. the incident was reported just after 5:30. it is a 10-story building located in the 100 block of north broad street. we don't see smoke coming from the building at this point but we are trying to find out exactly what is going on and what firefighters have discovered. we do know this, traffic is blocked southbound. so far there are no injuries of any kind. we will stay on this. saint elizabeth high school in wilmington has unveiled plans for a new sports complex at camby park. this is a look at what those fields would look like. right now the school has to rent other fields for their games. school officials say the facility would include baseball and softball fields in addition to a football

>> a woman from cherry hill has returned home after a visit to her native puerto rico for the funeral of her father. she also brought a little sunshine to the storm ravaged island. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has the story. >> you can't really understand the magnitude of how bad it is until you are there. >> reporter: cherry hill salon owner wanda moore as returned from home to deliver

supplies and bury her father. the lack of power added an extra level of pain to this vietnam veteran. >> i could slowly see his bodi compose in front of us and it was a very difficult thing to watch. >> reporter: wanda documented her travels to remote towns that fema and the red cross haven't reached. >> i just want to show you the conditions that people are living in with no electricity, the fan's not working. and no water. >> reporter: wanda says many towns she was the first outsider to visit since hurricane maria devastated the island last month. a container full of supplies sent from new jersey didn't arrive until thursday, but wanda used some of the $50,000 in go fund me donations collected to buy food and water for storm victims. >> she opens the bag and she sees the water and she starts to hysterically cry. so my god i didn't know you guys were going to give me water and just starts crying. a drink of water, that's how bad it is.

in on monday night. so, fall will return. right now temperatures stuck in the 60's. 66 degrees in philadelphia. our high today 67. 1 degree below normal. so, seasonably cool. allentown 63, trenton 63 and atlantic city airport 65. and in cape may, 64 degrees. satellite and radar showing that we have been stuck in the clouds pretty much all day long and you can see that swirl off the coast of the carolinas. that's low pressure and it's also been tossing a few light showers across the shore. that low pressure kind of dies out as we head through the weekend and that will allow or winds to shift but tonight a cloudy damp night with a few spotty showers especially east of philadelphia. 55 degrees in the suburbs. about 60 degrees for center city. future tracker showing don't expect much sunshine tomorrow. 8:30 in the morning lots of clouds, some areas of spotty drizzle as we need into the afternoon, could see some brightening in the skies, best chance would be across the lehigh valley and the poconos but still a chance of a shower
