an hour. >> reporter: the joint chiefs offered the first information. >> the assessment by our leaders on the ground at that time was that contact with the enemy was unlikely. >> reporter: but abc news is learning what happened often the missi -- on the mission. it was october 3rd when they set out on a reconnaissance mission. but a senior intelligence official tells abc news they were given a second mission, their new goal to kill or capture a high-value target. they were supposed to be joined by a second u.s. team that never made it. but they were told to proceed on their own. the official tells us that mission was unsuccessful but exposed the americans to the enemy. the next morning the americans are heading home when they sense something is off. a village elder is trying to stall them.

suddenly, 50 militants are upon them, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns, a sophisticated attack. according to the pentagon, one hour into the assault, the americans called for help. >> that unit thought they could handle the situation without additional support. >> reporter: a u.s. drone arrives within minutes, unarmed but able to provide video of the ambush. 30 minutes later, french military aircraft mobilized to help. two hours into the attack, those french planes arrive on the scene to provide cover. as night falls two wounded u.s. troops are evacuated. so are the bodies of the three u.s. soldiers killed in action, but sergeant la david johnson is still missing. his body would not be recovered for another 48 hours. >> from the time the firefight was initiated until sergeant johnson's body was recovered, french, or u.s. forces remained in that area.

minister who urged a diplomatic solution to the crisis with north korea. now during the president's trip, he will visit the korean peninsula, but he's unlikely to visit the demilitarized zone as other presidents have done. a white house official says that's because of time constraints. in the meantime, the president's own personal lawyer will meet with investigators looking into the election. talks ended when trump's campaign started gaining steam. in a statement last month, cohen said he had nothing to do with russia's meddling in elections. police in tampa are baffled. the city has add 1,000 streetlights to the area, and cops are advised to be extra vigilant. all three victims were bus riders. abc's chuck receiverson has more.

after pleading guilty to deserting his post in afghanistan before being kidnapped by the taliban. the judge is expected to rule on bergdahl's motion to dismiss the case entirely. to san francisco where testimony resumes in the trial of an undocumented immigrant. he admitted he shot kate steinle. at issue is whether he fired intentionally or the gun went offer accidently. his immigration status is not a factor, but the shooting two years ago kicked off that national debate on immigration. the city had released him from jail even though the federal government wanted to deport him. tampa, florida police are escorting children to and from bus stops after three murders in less than two weeks. all three victims were transit bus riders. so the transit agency has changed a route through seminole heights.

the police say they don't have any suspects or motives but are confident the cases are related. philadelphia's welcome to the police chief's convention didn't go quite as planned. three members of the city's highway patrol team were injured as they performed motorcycle stunts. outside the convention center. two were hurt in a chain reaction crash. the third was injured as part of a dragging stunt. all three were treated at the hospital and released. >> okay. the nfl is making something completely clear. janet jackson has not been banned from the super bowl. >> the league said in a statement after jackson's fans demanded that justin timberlake at least apologize for the wardrobe incident at the 2004 super bowl. the statement included a no comment about the speculation, regarding potential guests when timberlake performs. at next february's big game in minneapolis. some people are worked up about this one online. >> that sounds like a non-denial denial. that means janet jackson is
