>> reporter: good evening. well, among the facts that we do know here is a man suffered cardiac arrest last night. police were alerted about 8:00 p.m. a short time earlier, police believe he was involved in a physical altercation. now investigators are going to have to see if those two issues are connected and if so, if anyone is responsible. >> the call was that a male subject was in cardiac arrest out in the street. >> reporter: pennsville police learned the 53-year-old man in the street had been involved in trying to find a yard sale item. >> we know that it began with a yard sale on saturday. >> reporter: chief allen cummings says the 53-year-old and a 48-year-old female could not locate the item from the sale, a piece of welding equipment. that was supposed to be stored in this shed on highland avenue. for some reason, they go two blocks to where mike ventura and his 16-year-old son live. >> they accuse them of taking the generator for the welder, yes. >> reporter: ventura told us they barged into his yard and kicked their way into his

shed. >> opened the door and they tried to find this welder. >> right, walked through it. not here. >> not here absolutely not. >> reporter: the pair returns to highland avenue. >> about a half hour, i was little concerned 'cause i was accused of it and i know the lady, so me and my son and his friend we just rode over there and asked them if they find it and they did in their shed. >> it had been moved but still in the residence. >> reporter: ventura claims the 53-year-old apologizes and then gets agitated and tried to throw a punch. >> he missed me. i moved. i kind of stumbled. he went for my son grabbed him by the hoodie. >> reporter: ventura took pictures of what he says is bruising on his son's face. ventura says the fight stops, situation calms down minutes later the 53-year-old collapses. police now have to sort out the actual chain of events. >> we need to find out who the accused is, who the aggressor is.

obviously we have a victim but that victim could also be the aggressor so we're kind of trying to put a puzzle together here. >> reporter: it is a puzzle that they have various parts of that puzzle, they have the facts, they have statements from a number of people some of them conflicting. they have not of course heard from the 53-year-old. last we heard he remains in intensive care. live in pennsville john rawlins channel6 "action news." monica. >> friends family and loved ones are mourning the loss of two teens killed in a shooting in south philadelphia. tonight the search is on for those responsible. the gunfire erupted at 8:30 last night near the corner of south 12th street and ritner. 17-year-old salvatore dee knuble and caleer were killed. >> i see him coming from, going to school. he spoke and he was very

respectful. >> sal was a great young man. his family is tremendous. hard working kid who just loved being around his fellow prep students and we're going to miss him tremendously. >> police are still looking for the suspects responsible for the gun fight. a deadly early morning shooting in north philadelphia is also under investigation at this hour. according to police a man was shot in the head at 1:30 a.m. in the 300 block of north bailey street. he was taken to a nearby hospital but died. so far no word on a motive or suspects. >> nearly 200 customers at a storage unit facility are being warned that their belongings may have been compromised. this as police in wilmington are investigating multiple burglaries at the sentinel self storage facility. several pad locks were broken but the management of the building won't say how or how many units were hit. one woman who did not want her face shown lost hundreds of dollars worth of items. >> i lost a lot. they took all my appliances. i just bought new tv's to put in my house.

they took those. they didn't take from me. you took from my babies. >> the storage company says it contacted as many as 180 customers to come inspect their units for theft. >> ♪ >> new at 5:00 now a philadelphia cat owner is now considering legal action against animal control after a startling discovery. two days after her pet got out of the house, she found it in the city's custody with a leg missing. "action news" reporter nora muchanic has that story tonight. >> i lost it. she was shaved hadn't no leg. >> 16-year-old stinky is walking on three legs now and the port richmond animal lover is horrified by how that came to be. stinky a long hair mix who was born with and learned to look with a cracked right here foot got out of the house late saturday night. when kim located the cat monday, she went to acct, the city's animal care and control team on hunting park avenue to pick her up.

legs. in port richmond, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> turning to accuweather the cool down for the delaware valley, mother nature served up a brisk reminder. it is fall today. meteorologist adam joseph with more on that forecast. >> it's late october and this is how it should feel this time of year and quite a drop over the last 24 to 48 hours. in fact, a look at the numbers, it was 77 on monday, 75 yesterday, dipping 10 degrees today to a typical high which is around 64 degrees. we topped off at 65 so far. as we look at other area numbers, pretty similar too. reading and allentown 62, 62 in millville, shore communities right around 60. in the poconos in the upper 50's at 57 degrees. heavy clouds to the east of philadelphia. some breaks to the west so we're right on the edge of one system and another coming from the west. so in that full accuweather forecast we will chat about tomorrow being a very cloudy day and a cool day but a

shooting in north philadelphia that sent a good samaritan to the hospital. coming up at 5:30 how a man ended up hurt because he tried to do the right thing. >> we've heard of laws cracking down on distracted driving. how about distracting walking. new fins forcing pedestrians to look up when they cross the street and cecily has a scorpion at the zoo. >> we get the point. >> yes. exactly. this is why i'm holding it in the case, not in my hand. this is an emperor scorpion and these grow to be one of the largest scorpions in the world, up to about 8-inches in length. this is a very young one. they're found typically in western south america, and when they're juveniles they actually use that stinger to liquefy their food. they're kind of like babies and they can only have liquid but the adults actually use those claws to catch their prey and their sting is actually harmless to people but it's like a bee sting so i'm not going to risk it. i will be feeding the sloth

says a deadly shooting at grambling state university was not random or an act of terrorism. a student and his friend were fatally shot after an altercation that began in a dorm room and ended in a courtyard. the historically black university is in louisiana. it appears the two victims knew the suspect. that gunman remains at large. sentencing hearing for army sergeant bowe bergdahl got under way. he pleaded guilty to desertion and endangering his comrades by walking off his post in afghanistan in 2009. today a former navy s.e.a.l. cried during his testimony about a military dog killed on a mission with him trying to find bergdahl. bergdahl faces up to life in prison. >> you've all heard about laws banning texting and driving. well, what about texting and walking? distracted pedestrians are the target of a new plan in hawaii, the first spot in the nation to pass such a law. abc's marci gonzalez has the details tonight from los

angeles. >> reporter: it happens all too often. people unable to fight the urge to text, to e-mail or to crews social media even while walking. the results at times, getting a laugh but it can be truly dangerous especially when crossing the street, which is why in honolulu, this is now illegal. >> when you're texting, your eyes are down. and you're manipulating your phone. you're concentrating on what you're doing with your phone and that's a problem when you're crossing the street especially if you have a driver that's not paying attention. >> reporter: anyone caught looking at their phone or other electronic device while crossing a roadway in hawaii's capitol could face a fine up to $35. the penalty going up for each following offense. >> i don't know about the fine but i have to say i do think it's a dangerous activity. >> reporter: officials in honolulu say they aren't limited to drivers. the number of pedestrians killed in accidents has risen

22 percent since 2014. >> you have to pay attention especially when you're at an intersection. >> reporter: under the new law pedestrians can still talk on the phone, they just can't look down at their devices when a crosswalk. other states are now considering similar laws. >> i think it's really smart but i think it's going to be tough on people. >> reporter: in california, there are already warning signs up in some places. this one reading "cross the street, then update facebook." and a resolution to ban distracted walking here is expected to go before california's legislature in january. in los angeles, marci gonzalez channel6 "action news." >> a long shuttered school in wilmington delaware is finally set to come down. this is burnett school on west 37th street. it has been closed since 2010 but is still costing the district a lot of money in utilities. tonight district officials will meet with community members to discuss plans to level the building. the hope is it will be gone by march. in its place will be tennis courts as well as baseball and softball fields for nearby

>> health check tonight. most states have laws restricting indoor tanning by teenagers but a new investigation shows they aren't being enforced. researchers posing as minors checked more than 400 salons in 42 states and the district of columbia asking if teens could tan there. 37 percent of the time the salons did not stop them. pennsylvania, new jersey, ban teenagers under 17 from indoor tanning. in delaware the minimum age is 18. a cdc committee backed the newly approved shigrix is the vaccine for preventing shingles: the expansion includes 20 million who got

the other approved vaccine. its immunity wanes over time. >> a green beret who nearly died in afghanistan has become a hero on the home front saving his little nephew's life. hudson hill was born with a defective liver one that turned his skin and eyes yellow when he was just weeks old. doctors determined little hudson needed a liver transplant preferably from a living donor. trevor has been in combat zones five times. he almost died in 2005 when his team was attacked. >> we rolled over and two of the four people in my vehicle were killed instantly. >> comrades pulled trevor out of the flaming wreckage. >> ever since then, i have, you know, survivor guilt from, you know, why did i survive and those two guys didn't and then i also have these guys saved my life and what do i do to pay that back?

velveteen. it's actually a relatively new breed of rabbit. they were bred in the united states in 1990 and they are incredibly soft and i could pet him all day and if you look at these ears, these ears actually can grow to be 14-inches long. they're known for their really, really gentle temperament and they're really nice guys and here we go, i got a yam, there we go. he's going to eat lots of 57 tabs of course and they're big chewers so if you're thinking about having a pet rabbit, just definitely do your research as you should do with really any pet. so, i'm going to talk about the weather and keep petting you wesley because you are just adorable and today definitely feeling like fall. taking a look at the temperatures right now, philadelphia and women, to 65 degrees. allentown and trenton 63. the atlantic city airport 61. cape may 60 and wilmington 65. satellite and radar showing that we do have an edge of clouds coming up the coast, all thanks to that front that

moved through yesterday that brought us the rain. kind of stalled off the coast. some clearing in the western suburbs and if you look across western pennsylvania and the ohio valley there are more clouds even some showers. that's from a trough that will be rolling through tomorrow. so, tonight, seasonably cool, partly cloudy, should be a dry night. allentown down to 43 degrees. philadelphia down to about 47. millville and cape may 43 and wilmington 44 degrees. so, the day planner for the tomorrow, mostly cloudy skies. i think we'll see a little bit of sunshine early in the day. then the clouds roll in as that trough develops and we could even see a sprinkle. temperatures really struggling to hit 60 degrees and that's unseasonably cool. the normal high for tomorrow is 63. we haven't had a a lot of cool days this october. and then i'm tracking a system for sunday. so, tropical satellite showing east of nicaragua, there's a tropical disturbance and what this is going to do, it will ride north along a cold front that moves in on sunday and that means we have got a soaking rain on the way.

>> hello again. here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. three people are gunned down in north philadelphia, one while trying to help the suspect while he fled the scene. we will have the latest on that investigation. plus, a driver just doing his job is targeted by a group of thieves and ends up in the hospital. police are asking for your help before they strike again. and the ncaa p is calling out a major airline tonight for what it says is the treatment of a group of passengers. we'll explain what they are alleging. >> now the details. a good samaritan is in the hospital tonight all because he tried to do the right thing. he offered to call 911 for a man who turned out to be the suspect in a double shooting in north philadelphia. that suspect is still on the run tonight. "action news" reporter jeanette reyes has the full story. >> i lived here for 22 years i've seen it all. it's getting worse.

>> reporter: rosemary valentine may have just seen the worst yet. overnight she witnessed the bloody end of a deadly triple shooting that began a block away from her home. around 2:00 in the morning philadelphia police arrived at b and allegheny avenues to find a 24-year-old man shot in his chest. he later died and a 31-year-old female shot in the torso. she is in stable condition. the suspect sped off in this toyota camry and crashed into a utility pole and valentine's white pickup truck at b and westemoreland. >> i went to the window. didn't see anything. then i heard a gunshot. >> reporter: after the suspect crashed his car he rushed out to take the rear license plate off. neighbors heard the noise and came out. that's when the suspect pulled out his gun and shot a 55-year-old man who said he called 911. >> i saw a guy bleeding on the floor, he got shot in the head. he was moving. >> reporter: once again, the gunman ran off. a good description led police to the suspect who was just three blocks away.

>> not only was he found fitting the description about three blocks away, but he also had a weapon in his possession and he had the license plate of the vehicle that he had just removed in front of witnesses right before he shot our third victim. so, definitely a bizarre incident. >> reporter: formal charges are currently pending so police have not identified the suspect in this triple shooting. as far as a motive, police have not publically released that yet. reporting in north philadelphia, jeanette reyes, channel6 "action news." >> police in southwest philadelphia are looking for a group of young men who attacked a pizza driver and stole his car. the surveillance video captured the five suspects between the ages of 14 and 25 standing outside the luk-oil gas station in the 5700 block of baltimore avenue last friday. now, a few minutes later a 56-year-old man showed up to deliver a pizza. but before the victim could leave, one of the suspects pointed a gun at him and demanded money.

the gunmen then hit the worker and knocked him unconscious. then the foremen jumped in his car while the attacker went through the victim's pocket. the driver suffered severe head injuries and remained unconscious for three days. if you recognize any of these suspects, please call philadelphia police. a fed ex truck tipped over on its side here in burlington county this afternoon. chopper6 overhead along route 38 near the route 541 mount holly bypass in hainesport. it was about 1:00 p.m. when authorities say the driver flipped the rig. officials say it's not clear what caused it but it did cause traffic tie-ups in both directions and the driver was rushed to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. >> well, members of the sierra club and other environmental advocates took a stand against a plan to open the arctic national wildlife refuge to drilling. they hand delivered a petition at congressman pat meehan's officers in springfield today. it umps him to oppose a budget proposal that opens the door for oil and gas drilling.

congressman meehan's officers sent us a statement about that petition. it said meehan understands the group's concerns and that he'll be weighing all of the budget including what it means for tax relief as well as our economy and our military. >> 150,000 pounds of relief supplies that were collected in camden will soon be heading to puerto rico. everything from nonperishable food to diapers and toothpaste was donated a few weeks ago. today the items were loaded onto trucks and delivered to the armory at the mount holly army national guard. from there they will be ponged and flown to the hurricane ravaged u.s. territory. much of puerto rico is still without power more than a month after maria hit. >> president donald trump says there's "great unity in the republican party" despite a searing takedown from arizona senator jeff flake. the arizona republican announced he will not seek reelection in 2018 on the senate floor yesterday. he also warned about what he calls the dangers of trump style politics.

bob corker also blamed president trump for the debase. he called it of the nation. this morning on "good morning america" flake predicted more in his party will stand up to the president. >> a lot of my colleagues have spoken out and i think a lot more will. what i tried to say in the speech is the longer we wait, the more we basically normalize this kind of behavior, these kind of politics and we can't do that. we just can't. >> but in a tweet president trump disagrees writing "jeff flake with an 18 percent approval rating in arizona said a lot of my colleagues have spoken out. really they just gave me a standing o. president trump said flake made the right decision in his opinion not seeking reelection predicting he would have lost. well, the naacp is warning african-americans they may face discrimination by american airlines. the organization issued a travel advisory today saying the airline may have a corporate culture of racial bias. the advisory cites incidents

involving the airline staff and black customers. the airline responded saying it is committed to providing a positive travel experience for everyone. members of the naacp will be invited to address the matter at the airline's headquarters. >> fats domino has died. the legendary singer passed away of natural causes in jefferson parish, louisiana early tuesday. fats domino is credited with helping change popular music with songs like blueberry hill back in 1956. he's one of the first 10 honorees named to the rock and roll hall of fame and became global superstar but he always stayed true to his hometown of new orleans. fats domino was 89 years old. world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the life and legacy of fats domino as well as the growing feud between republican lawmakers and president trump. you can watch it all tonight at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. >> time right now for a check of that "action news" traffic report wednesday night. >> for that we go to matt pelman in the "action news"

traffic center. how are we looking. >> the last report talking about the commodore barry bridge, rick and monica, so let's look at it live. this is the eastbound side where there appears to be a construction restriction heading into new jersey. we're down a lane so just two lanes getting by. we are seeing jams on the eastbound side coming out of chester. but an even more serious situation is on the westbound side on the jersey side of the bridge right by the toll plaza, it's a bad accident. we're hearing someone's trapped in the wreckage so coming away from 130 and 295 on 322 westbound headed toward the barry, just 6 miles per hour. bottom line is either way you're going, i would not use the commodore barry this afternoon. head down to the delaware memorial or go up to the walt whitman. that will be crowded but still a better bet than the commodore barry at this hour. over in lumberton we had that flipped over fed ex truck earlier today t it brought down a pole and wires so a lane is out on 38 near 541 the mount holly bypass near the

getting ready for a massive celebration. you know that. alicia vitarelli got a scoop on all the excitement including oprah's visit. meteorologist cecily tynan live at the philadelphia zoo again with this week's outdoor adventure. who do you have there, cecily? >> hi, guys and i have two really cute furry animals in a row. this is grayson. grayson is a chin chill la. they're found in the andes mountains. these guys are endangered. up until last year critically endangered. over the past 15 years 90 percent of their numbers had been lost and the reason why really the pet trade. these guys are the softest animals in the world. they have 60 hairs per follicle's one. they can't get wet to clean themselves they take dust baths because if they get wet their fur is so dense it never dries and they'll freeze to death. they're adorable. i will be feeding the sloth, a really slow leisurely creature, just taking it easy,

steve sweeney's negative headlines keep piling up. why are south jerseyans so angry at sweeney? sweeney repeatedly sided with chris christie to underfund south jersey schools, increase standardized testing like parcc, cut take-home pay for teachers, and broke his promise to fund the pensions of hundreds of thousands of new jerseyans- all while padding his own. steve sweeney says a lot of things. but the truth is, he's not on our side.

this is at the toll plaza as you can see on the jersey side of the commodore barry. it involved a box truck and two other vehicles and if you look at the center of your screen you see some type of red tarp there that's covering one of the vehicles involved. this is logan township gloucester county, the jersey side of the commodore barry bridge. no word yet of any injuries. but as you can see traffic is getting by slowly on one side of the toll plaza. other than that things are at a standstill. we'll keep an eye on this multi-vehicle accident and bring you more information as it becomes available to us. >> thoughts and prayers with those folks. all right. on a much lighter note time to see what's going on at the philadelphia zoo. >> for that we go to meteorologist cecily tynan out there with the all important forecast as well, cecily. >> hi, guys and this is the final zoo broadcast of the year so laura is with me and i think we saved the best for last. >> i think we did absolutely. >> we're in the small mammal house and we're in the sloth exhibit and this is charlotte who just is kind of hanging out. >> hanging out having some

carrots doing what sloths do best. >> they have a very slow metabolism but there is a reason for that, right. >> it's all about energy conservation for them. so they do everything slowly. they eat slowly. they move slowly. they spend almost all of their time in the tree. they come down once a week to take care of business and that's it. >> now, this is charlotte and she's a two toed sloth. there's different types of sloths in the wild. >> exactly. with the two toed it's almost like a mitten the way her paws work. she uses they are paws to hang. >> i saw sloths in the wild in costa rica. it was a big deal because they were coming down the tree to use the facilities. >> to do their business. >> it doesn't happen very often. they were all gathered around to take a picture. >> nobody knows why they come down particularly to do that. they do everything else including giving birth hanging upside down in the tree. >> when they're actually down on the floor, they can't

more clouds, some showers. that's our trough that moves through tomorrow. tonight partly cloudy, great night for sleeping 43 degrees in the suburbs, about 47 degrees for center city. tomorrow mostly cloudy and with that trough we could get a sprinkle or two in the afternoon and temperatures below normal for a change. allentown 59, philadelphia 60. that is 3 degrees below normal for tomorrow. trenton 60. cape may 60 and wilmington 61 but we have a really nice rebound for friday and saturday. the jet stream moves up to the north. high pressure off the virginia-north carolina coast will bring us winds out of the southwest. temperatures in the mid 60's and low 70's. warmer and brighter. great time to come to the philadelphia zoo, but on sunday, everything changes. that jet stream basically goes negatively. it helps guide up some tropical moisture and we're looking at a soaking rain, generally about one to 3 inches. if you're heading to the eagles game you definitely want to take that rain gear.
