police have captured the man accused of shooting three people at a colorado wal-mart store. and 3 million fire extinguishers are recalled today because they may not work during an emergency. but the big story is the camden police officer lucky to be alive after being shot in the line of duty last night. that officer is recovering after cooper university hospital. he was shot near 9th and chelan street. jeanette is live with the latest. >> reporter: well, a press conference is set to get underway in the matter of minute. but we managed to get details. the officer is recovering and in good spirits. the suspect on the other hand is in custody processed and charged and sitting at the camden county jail. to give you some background this

happened at 10:00 and the first year officer approached three men on the 900 block of cheltenham avenue. and one of them made a run for it. and short chase ensued and the officer caught up and reached for the gun and a struggle began and shot the officer at point-blank range in the thigh barely missing major arteries. the officers responded and applied a tourniquet to the officer's wound. we are told that the authorities these officers responded put a turnket on the fellow officer and took him to the hospital all of that happening in the matter of 12 minutes. and the police chief says it may have very well saved his life. >> taking him off the street on the gun. it would have been a lot worse events taking place tonight. i'm extremely proud of the

officer and the fellow officers that responded. and not even injury to the suspect in that matter. >> a couple of details. we expect to learn during the press conference that could get started in the matter of minutes. more about the suspect. we know he lives in the area than is about it. he is yet to be publically identified and also to learn more about the first year officer. as soon as this happens we'll be soon to report on that. channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. now, to the latest on the new york city attack. today the nypd says that authorities believe that the suspect acted alone and they do not see evidence that anyone else was involved in tuesday's rampage. 29-year-old, sayfullo saipov, was accused of driving a truck on a bike path and mowing down 20 people and eight of them were killed and police say that he

was inspired by isis videos he watched online and rented the home depot truck ahead of time to learn how to turn it. and now police agencies are investigating along the delaware river after a person was found dead near the water. the gruesome discovery came along chestnut street in newcastle city. it's not clear how the person died and delaware state police are on the scene as long with local police as the investigation continues. a 75-year-old man was killed when a car slammed into a building in huntington park. it shows the car speeding down the hill and plowing into the roofing company. along rising sun avenue and the man that died was a passenger in the car. the driver, a 29-year-old woman was rushed into surgery. katherine scott has more details in our next half hour. >> a new proposal could bring a

major change to the philadelphia school district. the mayor wants to get rid of the school reform commission and replace it with a local school board than was just announced at city hall. vernon odom is live with the details. >> reporter: good afternoon, the mayor says it's time again for the city to control the school board. local control they say. to get rid of the src that had its own share of criticism over the years from abuse to conflict of interest. now the mayor says give the district with 200,000 districts back to the people of philadelphia. >> i'm officially calling on the members of the school reform commission to dissolve at their next meeting. >> with that mayor kenney calls for abolition of the 16-year-old school reform commission. when philadelphia school says tim was a fiscal basket case.

they pushed for years to have the city regain control with the school board independent of harrisburg and the mayor wants the power to appoint the school board and he would be held accountable. we'll select them with one goal in mind assuring every child has access to quality schools no matter what they look like or where they live. >> now the district claiming to be financially stable but facing a billion dollar deficit over the next decade. but the mayor assures everyone that there are measures in place to cover ta but still need state money, hundreds of millions to avert another crippling crisis. >> reporter: rick, there are bumpy political roads ahead with this desire to make this move but the mayor hopes to have the new school board ready to go

the cumulous sky cover, that is what you'll see the rest of the afternoon with the mixture of sun and clouds and it's warmer today of course with the high of 73. down along the water holding closer to 69 degrees a mix of sun clouds and mild. and in philadelphia a mix of sun and clouds and warmer than yesterday. and the winds continue light but out of the south 6 to 12 miles per hour. for the temple football game at financial field it looks like good football weather for november. it's usually cooler for the night games. 66 degrees in the first quarter be 63 and even that would be above today's average high. 59 is your overnight low and very mild under partly cloudy skies and a few more clouds developing toward morning and winds southwest at 4 miles per hour and i would not be surprised to see a matchy round of fog in the region for the morning commute tomorrow.

the chief of police announced the name of the man arrested for shooting a police officer last night. the delron mayhan. the officer was shot at point-blank range and is expected to recover. this all began when the first year officer approached three men he considered suspicious and officials say after a chase there was a struggle and then a suspect reached for the officer's gun and the alleged shooter was arrested who responded quickly and taken to cooper hospital where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries that are considered not life-threatening. meanwhile on capitol hill republicans in the house released their tax bill today after several delays, debate and
