the possible motive for the deadly shooting inside of that small texas church in sutherland springs. as it stands tonight, more than 20 people remain hospitalized. >> we are learning now that the gunman identified as 26-year-old devin patrick kelley did send threatening text messages to his mother-in-law before the attack. authorities say she sometimes attended services at first baptist but was not there that day when kelley showed up yesterday. >> annie mccormick is live in the sat center with the latest on the investigation. >> annie, good evening. >> reporter: and rick and monica, we're learning new details about the suspected gunman, what his motive may have been and why that church in particular was targeted. authorities returned to the scene of sunday morning's massacre inside the first baptist church of sutherland springs texas. today investigators removed moved all of the bodies. 26 people were killed, 20 wounded. many injured remain in area hospitals. the victims range in age from

18 months to 77 years old. this morning the church's pastor frank pomeroy and his wife sherri speaking out about losing their youngest daughter, 14-year-old annabelle pomeroy. the couple were out of town during the shooting. >> we lost more than belle yesterday. and one thing that gives me a quiver of encouragement is the fact that belle was surrounded yesterday by her church family that she loved fiercely. >> reporter: new details are emerging about the suspected shooter, 26-year-old devin kelley. it was around 11:30 sun morning during service he walked in wearing tactical gear dressed in black armed with a gun. >> investigation. >> domestic situation going on within this family. the suspect's mother-in-law attended this church. we know he had made threatening -- she received a threatening text from him. >> reporter: kelley lived about 30 miles away in new bronfeld texas. he received a bad conduct

discharge. he was court-martialed in 2012 on charges of assault and aggravated assault on his spouse and a child. he briefly worked as a security guard at a texas water park. >> there was three firearms that have been recovered. one was the ruger 556 that was recovered scene of the church. two additional handguns were recovered from the vehicle. >> reporter: we have an update about those people who are currently hospitalized. according to the department of public safety there are six victims in stable condition and have been released from the hospital. four are in serious condition and 10 are currently critical. for now reporting live from the satellite center annie mccormick channel6 "action news." rick and monica, back to you. >> thank you, annie. president donald trump took time today to respond to the mass shooting in texas while he was in asia. he said mental health is the problem, no not guns. he dodged a question about what policies he would support to prevent another tragedy. >> this isn't a guns

situation. i mean, we could go into it but it's a little bit soon to go into it. >> earlier in the day the president issued a call for unity urging americans to pull together. >> and you can find extended coverage of the texas church shooting online at 6abc.com including the very latest on the investigation as well as a slideshow honoring the memory of the victims. several people were hurt in this serious crash along the boulevard in northeast philadelphia this afternoon. chopper6 was over the northbound lanes at pratt street just before 3:00 p.m. still not clear how the crash happened but we know that at least three cars were involved. traffic was diverted from the area so crews could clear the scene. a crash along a busy stretch of the admiral wilson boulevard in camden claimed the life of a teenager overnight. two other teens who were there as well are shedding light on exactly what happened. "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist live from the scene with the very latest. sarah. >> reporter: rick, a group has gathered along the admiral

wilson boulevard where that young woman lost her life last night. the medical examiner will be performing toxicology tests to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash. investigators are already certain that speed was factor. the two teenagers who were passengers in the car have already told them that the young lady who was driving was going at least a hundred miles per hour. >> i just heard a big bang and seen a flash. >> reporter: this is what surveillance cameras captured, that bright flash as the car careen owed out of control on the admiral wilson boulevard in camden, new jersey, last night. carlos hernandez was working at the gas station right there. surveillance cameras captured him and a co-worker as they heard the grinding crash and looked out to see what was going on. >> i just seen a car, it was smashed up and i said somebody got seriously hurt. >> reporter: the fire ball streaking across the screen was this 2009 white honda accord driven by a teenaged girl. she had two male teens in the car with her. they have told investigators the young woman behind the

wheel was traveling at least a hundred miles per hour. >> it looks like the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. they hit the median. and from there, the car ended up in a vacant lot on admiral wilson boulevard. >> reporter: the car first made impact with the median at 17th street and didn't come to a stop until 19th street. the driver was not wearing a seat belt. she was ejected from the car and pronounced dead a short time later. the passengers suffered only minor injuries. >> they were with the driver for most of the night. so, detectives have -- are working with them now to try to piece together some of the -- maybe some of the things that had happened prior to the accident. >> reporter: of note, the two passengers who did survive this fatal crash were in fact wearing their seat belts. police do not expect to be filing any charges. live in camden, new jersey, tonight, i'm sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news."

download for your mobile device. >> city of philadelphia wants to get out the word about assistance for folks displaced by hurricane maria. and they've opened disaster assistance center here in north philadelphia. the facility is at the rivera recreation center on north fifth street and allegheny. people are available to help those who need to register with fema and connect with local social services. the city is already helped more than 700 evacuees from puerto rico. >> residents in one lower moreland neighborhood will feel the ground shake for the next week or so but it's not an earthquake. "action news" was at the red lion road and pine road today. that's where workers are blasting and clearing rock for at least the next few days. this is so a storm water retention basin can be built and used for a new subdivision that's in the works. we're told crews drilled 200 holes 10 feet deep and will plan to fill each with liquid explosive in order to get this project completed. >> wow. big operation. time for a check of that "action news" traffic report

reports is warning about the dangers. medicine is meant to heal but new research shows some drugs intended to help kids feel better can harm them instead if too much is taken. >> generally safe when used at directed but many of the problems happen when kids get into these medications on their own. >> a recent study in the journal pediatrics identified more than 3200 cases of kids younger than 12 who suffered serious side effects including hallucinations, rapid heartbeat and even death. many as a result of accidentally ingesting too much cough or cold medicine. >> they can be tempting. some might be colorful, some might be tasty. the really important thing is that they're kept away from kids. >> while you should never give cough and cold medicine to kids under four, beyond that, the health team at consumer reports says there's not a lot of evidence they work very well anyway. and suggest trying some home remedies instead. >> you want to keep kids

hydrated with things like warm drinks, soup or decaffeinated tea. those things may loosen congestion and soothe a sore throat. >> for kids 12 months and older, try adding a bit of honey which some research has shown can be as effective at relieving a cough as some over the counter cough medicine. kids five and older can suck on a sugar free lozenge or candy which can reduce the urge to cough and soothe an irritated throat. so can mixing a half teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water for a gargling solution. and if you do have young children at home, make sure to put medication up and away out of children's reach and sight. it's also smart to put medicine away after each use and never leave it out on a kitchen counter or a child's bedside table even if you're going to use it again in a few hours. of course you want to make sure that you lock the cap on the medicine bottles as well, rick and monica. >> that's right. >> good advice. >> thanks, ali. >> meantime philadelphia will soon be even more accessible

to the handicapped. officials held a mobility summit to talk about making buildings sidewalks wheelchair friendly. the president of the greater chamber of commerce talked about the importance of full access for everyone. discuss integrating access into a structure's design and more. the luncheon was held at the crown plaza in king of prussia. he stopped christie's commuter tax, saving south jersey residents over 200 million dollars. and he led the charge to pass paid family leave. aarp applauded sweeney for freezing property taxes for seniors and cutting prices on prescription drugs. "i got to take my hat off to him. he's a man of his word." steve sweeney. because there's more work to do to get south jersey's fair share.

>> ♪ >> hello again and here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. just days after a 21-year-old woman's body was found in cobbs creek, how police hope to track down her killer. plus, why two of president trump's former campaign aides remain on house arrest tonight. and an alert for drivers before a section of the schuylkill avenue area closes for 15 months. >> but the big story on "action news" tonight is the investigation into how a 21-year-old student spent her final hours before she was strangled to death. her body was found in cobbs creek over the weekend. police are hoping they can figure out what she was doing in those final hours and that they can track down her killer. "action news" reporter bob brooks live in southwest philadelphia tonight with the very latest on the investigation. bob. >> reporter: rick, we're here in southwest philadelphia near where the victim, kierra johnson lived. now, police say at this point they have very limited information and with no witnesses and no word of a suspect, they say they have a lot of police work to get

done. philadelphia police are now up against a major task, from combing the area surrounding cobbs creek to sifting through security video that could span all over the city, detectives are trying to track down a killer, the person responsible for murdering 21-year-old kierra johnson. >> on saturday, the medical examiner ruled the cause of her death was strangulation. >> reporter: she was strangled her body left in cobbs creek park near spruce street. johnson was found face down in the water. >> the passerby reported the presence of a body at cobbs creek and spruce in the water under the bridge there. >> reporter: police say johnson was first reported missing thursday evening by her mother. her body was discovered friday morning. we spoke to a maintenance worker where johnson lived in southwest philadelphia. he couldn't believe it when he found out. >> a nice kid, going to college. >> reporter: he said the last time he saw her last week around the time just before she was reported missing. >> i think wednesday or thursday she say hi to me and

third suspect connected to this case. officials say 29-year-old john kashava and arianna somerville from georgia allegedly lured a 21-year-old woman from east -- from california to the east coast. now, investigators say the victim was held against her will and forced into prostitution in pennsylvania, georgia and north carolina. police say they are still trying to track down a third person charged in the case, tyler bacto. >> we're learning more about a shooting in the feltonville section of philadelphia that critically injured two people. police say a 30-year-old man an 36-year-old woman were watching tv and drinking with a 53-year-old man here in the 400 block of west wyoming avenue around 2 o'clock sunday morning. investigators say at some point the 53-year-old shoots the 30-year-old man in the leg and the woman in the stomach before driving away in a silver cadillac. both victims were taken to einstein medical center where they are listed in critical but stable condition tonight. fire and hazmat crews were

called in for a fuel leak following a tractor-trailer accident in a hunting park section of philadelphia this morning. the truck crashed on the northbound lanes of the roosevelt boulevard at ninth street around 5:30. officials believe the driver was trying to make a turn when he hit some traffic signs. no injuries or charges were reported in connection with the crash. >> delegates from israel met with local leading healthcare innovators in center city today. they discussed how technology is making historic changes in healthcare during the greater philadelphia israel big data and digital health summit. attendees explored cutting edge approaches to healthcare that may help advance patient outcomes. >> a federal judge ruled two former trump campaign officials will remain on house arrest until more details about their personal wealth are disclosed. paul manafort and rick gates surrendered last week to the fbi to face criminal charges brought by special counsel robert mueller. the men have pled not guilty to to chance including

gunman tonight at 6:30 right after "action news." >> let's get an update on the highways and byways on your monday night. >> over to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. >> 8 miles per hour on the westbound side of the schuylkill before their by south street. of course overnights this week it's the eastbound side of 76 that will close once again just like it has the last few weeks at the vine street expressway and 30th street. that complete closure starts at 11 o'clock each night business -- this week. northbound crash at pratt street on the inner drive. speeds like 8 miles per hour coming north of broad. use frankford avenue as a possible local alternate. up here in the northeast close to philadelphia mills watching a new crash along woodhaven road. this is the eastbound side headed toward 95 right at 13 bristol pike taking out one of the lanes so causing some slowing as you come away from philadelphia mills. if you're hopping on 95 heading northbound you'll find a little slowing because there's a crash as well on the

street road on and off ramp, right lane blocked because of that accident. right lane is also out of commission on the northeast extension 476 as you come away from mid-county. the crash is a couple miles north of the interchange and the toll plaza there. right lane blocked so expect slowing as you come off of the east-west turnpike and the blue route. rick, back over to you. >> matt thank you. see you tomorrow. speaking of traffic a major closure for drivers in center city beginning at 8 o'clock tonight, southbound schuylkill avenue near 30th street station will be closed for about 15 months. penndot says the road between market and chestnut street will be closed so crews can repair a section of the schuylkill avenue via duct over eastbound 76. for the next 15 months drivers will have to use 23rd and walnut streets to access the ramp to i-76. also tonight, a lane restriction will go into that effect on eastbound chestnut street between 31st and schuylkill avenue beginning at 9 p.m. and lasting until 5:00 tomorrow morning. >> all right. still to come on "action news"

chill around here. hard freeze by the end of the week. >> there you go. >> as we take a look at the weather center here, fall colors really starting to pop in the delaware valley here. notice that today in my neighborhood as well and here tony sent this in to our social media pages from south ardmore park where you can see some of those sugar maples really kind of glistening here. but those leaves definitely going to start to fall here quickly this week as we get that chill and we get some days that the winds could kick up as wie. well. it has fallen into the 50's in the lehigh valley, allentown 56 degrees. 65 in trenton, still warm in philadelphia 68 degrees and mid 70's as you head down to the south as well like the atlantic city airport, millville, dover, between about 66 and 67 but as we go through the neck several hours, as that front passes through the winds will kick out of the north and you can see how we quickly drop here as we get towards 9, 10 o'clock, 56, 54 in the city of philadelphia and just after midnight, we're already dropping into the upper 40's. so, a good almost 20-degree

drop on average between now and midnight to around 1:00 a.m. all right. you probably noticed it yesterday as well as today, that sunset much earlier because of that time change over the weekend. sunset tonight was at 4:53 p.m. and between december 3rd and the 11th, that's the earliest period of sunset at 4:35 p.m. each of those days. then it starts to turn around and if you like that sun to stay up until at least 6 o'clock, you're going to have to wait until march eighth. as we look at satellite and radar here, cold front progressing through. it brought a couple scattered showers in some locations but generally it is a wind shift and a change in air mass with this front as opposed to any soaking rain. but there is a soaking rain for parts of the area setting up for the tomorrow, kind of knocking on the heels of the front, a little wave develops along the front here and then rides to the north and you can see the rain really starting to blossom here in the tennessee valley, parts of

>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program with ducis rodgers, meteorologist cecily tynan and jim gardner. >> ♪ >> it is monday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is new evolving information about the texas church shooting and the gunman. authorities say devon patrick kelley's grandmother in law was shot and killed inside the church. officials say kelley had been involved in a domestic dispute with his former wife. they were divorced in 2012. 26 people were killed yesterday morning in sutherland springs, texas. 20 were injured and 10 are still in critical condition.

law enforcement says a good samaritan shot kelley when kelley emerged from the church to make his get away in his car but kelley drove into a ditch and died either from that shooting or that he ended it with a self inflicted wound. sharrie williams is live in sutherland springs tonight. walter perez is standing by at a church in bucks county. sharrie let's go to you first. what's the situation as you find it in that tiny rural and devastated community? >> reporter: well, jim in the community this size, where there's only a few hundred people who live here, it didn't take us long to get a lay of the land. the church where those deadly shootings happened is only feet away on this side of me. on the other side of me is the main thorofare a highway 87 that runs through this community. as for the people here and speaking with them today, the residents this is already a quiet place, a place that was already deeply rural. the people i find today talking to them even more
