university camera. it's feeling more like winter than fall. meteorologist chris sowers joins us with a look at the very cold temperatures. hat on, chris. >> reporter: it's cold out here, welcome to the frozen tundra of philadelphia. feels like the middle of january. freeze warning continues for the next few hours in effect until 10:00 a.m. temperatures in the teens in some locations, most of us in the 20s, one or two locations have dropped to 18, 19 degrees. actually let's look at the temperatures bone-chilling cold. 13 right now in the poconos. it is 18 degrees in lancaster. 23 for philadelphia. wilmington, you've set a new record low for today, 21 there. cape may, 25, atlantic city, you tied your record low, 22. dover, 22 degrees, here's what stings you when you step outside. the winds are strong enough to produce windchills somewhere between 10 and 15 degrees above

zero. feels like 15 in allentown. 13 in philadelphia. 16 in trenton. satellite and radar should be a nice looking day today. we'll see a lot of sunshine here, temperatures are going to be very, very chilly. yesterday we managed an afternoon high of 38 degrees. windchills in the 20s most of the time. today the windsese -- winds ease up a bit and temperatures get up to 40 degrees under a mostly sunny sky. the normal high this time of career is 58. so we're a good 18 degrees below seasonal averages. when we come back we'll talk about the warmer temperatures in the seven seven-day forecast. nothing close to the 60s and 70s we had a week to ten days ago. if you're stepping outlined this morning, you need to bundle up, you'll need a hat and coat and scarf. these cold temperatures prompted city officials to enact

code blue alerts posted for the area. now, to breaking news in philadelphia where a police officer shot an armed suspect. the confrontation happened around 2:00 a.m. police responded to a 911 call for a man armed with a gun inside a home on the 1200 block of south 29th street in grays ferry. police say a 37-year-old mantua gun left a second floor bedroom and pointed a gun at the sergeant. the officer shot the suspect once in the chest. the man is in critical condition at penn presbyterian hospital. the suspect's name has not been released. no police officers were injured. a woman was dead after she was allegedly hit by a hit-and-run driver in burlington county, new jersey. the search is on for the driver and vehicle involved. it happened around midnight on the pemberton bypass near shady lane in pemberton. the person who found the woman on the highway called 911. she could not be saved. police are working to find out her identity and the description

of the vehicle that hit her. smoke poured from a roof of a home as firefighters battled a blaze in new jersey last night. firefighters were on the scene in tabernacle burlington county. two people were arrested and treated for smoke. they are expected to be okay. the cause is under investigation. roy moore released his public remarks in response to shock ago allegations of sexual abuse. a washington post article alleges whileness 30 he had an encounter with a 14-year-old. he insists he never met the girl. >> i never talked to her never had contact with her, the allegations are politically motivated they are to stop a very successful campaign. >> is accused of pursuing relationships with three young women between the ages of 16 and 18. the alabama judge is running in

camp going to pick up some wounded soldiers, and we got shot down. >> reporter: they were under heavy fire for hours and then although he was hurt, he and another soldier carried the mortally wounded pilot half mile to another landing zone for evacuation. he made sure others got out before he would leave. >> during the rescue mission i was able to assist are 15, 20 people and get them out before i got out. >> reporter: this is the silver star. >> reporter: for his actions he was awarded the silver star and purple heart, unless you're in the office and seen the citation on the wall you wouldn't know it. it took years to talk about it. >> it was not a very popular war, so it was almost like, so what, you want to vietnam, so what, you got a medal.

>> chicago saw it's first measurable snowfall of the season yesterday. the coating of snow came as the city tied the record low temperature for the day 18 degrees. the average low is 20 degrees higher, 35 degrees, while the snow was pretty to look at, not everyone was happy about it, especially drivers. there were several spinouts and crashes reported. fortunately in those cases nobody was hurt. >> i was going to start by complaining, i guess i can't. >> reporter: doesn't this make you happy, everybody was so fed up with the 70s and sunshine. >> i was not one of those people. >> reporter: i lived in chicago for three years, you don't get snow this early in the season. it shows you how cold the air is. satellite and radar we'll not see any snow here, the same air mass dropped the temperatures down here along the east coast. they are seeing up in the north,

green bay and the up of michigan, northern wisconsin they are seeing a little bit of light snow. for us, we're talking bitter cold temperatures. it will stay cold this morning. we have the accuweather alert in effect until 10:00 a.m. the freeze warning will continue that's when we'll drop the alert. high temperatures 40 degrees, it will be milder tomorrow, the winds shift out of the east/southeast. some rain expected monday. it turns much milder next week with the high temperatures up in the mid to upper 50s which is seasonable. low temperature, 24. normally we should be around 41 degrees. the winds are out of the north at 5 to 10 miles per hour. 9 in philadelphia. 5 in millville. 12 in cape may. the good thing we lost the gusts. yesterday we gusts ranging from 30 to 38 miles per hour. we're not seeing that right now.

these general wind speeds on the lighter side, 35 to 10 miles peo 10 miles per hour. reading ten degrees with the winds. feels like 13 in philadelphia. millville, 17 degrees. trenton, 16. dover, 13 degrees. actual air temperatures are a good 24 degrees colder than at the same time yesterday. yesterday it was fairly mild at this time. the front was in the process of pushing through. it wasn't until like the afternoon when we started to feel the chilly temperatures. 20 degrees colder right now in trenton. 23 in millville and dover. at 25 degrees in cape may. there's the arctic high sitting over the lower providences of canada. that will be skirting object by to the east next 24, to 48 hours. the winds will shift out of the south/southwest that will pump in milder temperatures. you can see the entire eastern half of the united states is chilly. the continental divide that's what things start to warm up.

truck at the a-plus gas station at north 52nd street in the parkside section. the truck rolled across the parking lot and hit another vehicle and utility pole. police took the victim to the penn presbyterian hospital where he died from his injuries. police have no suspects in the hooting. four philadelphia police officers are recovering following a crash in kensington. two pairs of officers were pursuing a red honda civic because a driver was wanted in connection with the shooting. at c and allegheny the police cruiser collided. the impact hit a pole and brought down power lines. >> the officer jumped out of the cop car, his face was all bloody and everything. >> reporter: all four were taken to temple university hospital in stable condition. it is 20-year-old suspect was arrest. a pennsylvania state

trooper shot in the line of duty continues to improve. authorities say seth kelly is no longer listed in critical condition at saint luke hospital in bethlehem. he has undergone several successful surgeries to remove bullets. corporal kelly was shot during a traffic shot in plainfield township on tuesday. the gunman has been charged with attempted murder. a second suspect wanted in a string of violent attacks in center city and university city is in police custody. the suspect surrendered to penn police yesterday afternoon. police say he and 20-year-old lance ryan attacked a penn grad student last weekend leaving him with a fractured skull. police believe the pair are tied to similar robberies. police in radnor township have arrested 30-year-old michael lead charged with stalking a local youtube star. they say he drove from michigan

and showed up uninvited at 18-year-old james niece's home. he has 140,000 instagram followers and thousands more on youtube and twitter. police believe his online popularity drew the attendance of leads. police say leads wanted to hookup. he has been arrested. penn state revealed it paid out an additional $16 million in relation to sexual abuse by sandusky. the additional payments bring the total to $100 million. the school's previously reported it settled with 33 people for $93 million. sandusky is serving a life term for sexually abusing young boys while an assistant football coach at penn state. teachers in the school district have a new contract. the contract fight led to

shorts. tuesday it got cooler, 49. we had clouds and showers and period of rain. wednesday, 52, thursday not bad, 59 degrees. yesterday's afternoon high was 39. that continued to drop off, we got down to 23 degrees that's the present temperature reading in philadelphia. some locations dropped all the way down into the teens. actual air temperatures. dewpoint 9, winds out of the north at 9. pressure 30.58 holding stealed. the visibility is okay, coming in at 10 miles per hour. that 23 degrees that's the earliest we see temperatures below 25 degrees since 1976. it's been a long time since we've seen this kind of cold so early in the winter season. the record low for the date is 21 that was set back in the 1960s. i don't think we'll reach 21, but we may she had another degree and drop -- shed another degree and drop down to 21. allentown, 21. atlantic has set a record low. dover coming close, millville,

23. cape may, 25. trenton has set a new record low this morning. 22 degrees. windchills in the teens, 10 in reading, 13 in the poconos. 17 in millville. feels like 16 degrees in cape may. satellite and radar here's the good news, if you're not a big fan of the cold weather and the snow they are seeing yosemite high -- seeing across the high plains and western great lakes you can see the clouds moving west to east, whenever you see that on a satellite map that philippines pacific air is starting to run -- owe pacific air is starting to run across the country. arctic air, if we had that moving into the pattern, the cloud cover would be moving north to south. we're not seeing that, it's west to east. this is all pacific air racing across the lower 48.
