putin. a bitter blast, a code blue is in place in our area due to the frigid temperatures. you can see the sun in the temple university camera. it's cold, feeling like winter more than fall. meteorologist chris sowers joins us with a look at the frigid temperatures, chris. >> reporter: it's very, very cold, good morning, nydia. five days ago it was 70 degrees in philadelphia. this morning temperatures are down into the teens and 20s, national weather service continues the freeze warning for areas highlighted here in blue, now all temperatures are below freezing this morning. north and west, getting into the trenton area, northern portions and central portions of new jersey. the growing season has ended north of philadelphia. it was technically still going on. south and east, that's why the freeze warning has been issued because at this point now the growing season will come to an end, temperatures bitter, bitter cold out here.

coldest air of season so far. it's the coalest -- coldest we've been since february. windchills in the teens, you need the heavy winter coat. bundle up in layers, multiple layers traps body heat. ware hat, gloves and scarf keep the extremities covered. windchills, 1 degrees above zero in the poconos. 11 above in reading. 13 above in philadelphia. 17 above in millville. feels like 16 above in cape may. satellite and radar nothing going on, it's a nice, quiet day, a good looking day, just bluster and cold, 40 degrees. the normal 58. even though it's milder than yesterday, we're talking about temperatures 18 degrees below seasonal averages. the good news if you don't like the cold weather it will be milder next week, but the bad

burlington county new jersey. the search is on for the driver and the vehicle involved it happen on the pemberton bypass near shady lane in petroleum about pemberton. the person who found the person called 911, but the person could not be saved. republican senate nominee roy moore has released his first public remarks in response to shocking allegations to sexual abuse. a washington post article says he initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old. he took to talk radio and insists he never met the girl. >> i never had contact with her, i believe these allegations are politically motivated to stop a successle -- successful campaign. >> the alabama judge is running in the special election to fill

in indianapolis said he was attacked over chicken nuggets. the woman complained she didn't get enough, he said she had to go through the driver through and order more. the passenger and driver jumped through the window and attacked the manager, they got out of the car and drove away without the

this is the coldest air we've seen in quite sometime. it's rare to get this kind of cold this far south in the delaware and lehigh valleys. we have temperatures, actual air temperatures that are down into the teens and we usually keep that in january, february. so, cold stuff out there right now. as we look at the call from accuweather this weekend. it will be milder today than yesterday afternoon. afternoon highs were stuck in the 30s, today, 39, 40 degrees, more importantly we'll lose the gusty breeze. not as harsh, lots of sunshine, tomorrow, lots of clouds, the system approaches from the west. the winds shift out of the east/southeast that pumps us up to 49 degrees. the good news if you're not a big fan of the cold weather it will not last that long. 40 degrees is the forecasted high. normally we should be around 58. we're tracking about temperatures 18 degrees below seasonal averages. today is a milder day. the low temperature, 24 that

old man winter decided to bring very cold air to the delaware and lehigh valleys. plus, philadelphia police are looking for the gunman who opened fire and killed a man as he sat in his car. nearly 20 gun shell casings found at the scene. how these neighbors came together to brighten their community and win big. the sudden burst of winter air is dangersous for those who sleep the city streets, chris, you need to bundle up and get inside. >> reporter: it's cold, you need to bundle up in layers, 3 or 4 layers will do it. heavy wintery coat and gloves and scarf an hat. take a look at the present temperature reading. the right-hand side is the record low. philadelphia, 24. the record low 21 set back in 1961. the city has low os 23 degrees that was last hour.

it's cold today. >> reporter: the arctic chill is bearing down on the northeast in vermont, they have heavy machinery rolling already while in new york, their winds so fierce they toppled 6 stories of scaffolding. >> a good wind comes around the corner, comes straight through and knocked the whole thing down. >> reporter: in new york, the national weather service has braced us for blustery winds and temperatures in the teens. it won't last long, should be warm are by the end of the weekend. abc news new york. >> in philadelphia, a trail of destruction was left behind after a deadly ambush say gas station overnight. police say a driver was shot 6 times as he sat inside a pickup truck at the a-plus gas station at north 52-nd and lancaster avenue in the parkside section. the truck rolled across the parking lot and hit utility pole. the victim died from his injuries. police have no motives or

suspects in the shooting. four police officers are recovering following a crash in kensington. authorities say it happened when two pairs of officers were pursuing a red honda civic because the driver was wanted in connection with a shooting. at c and allegheny the police cruisers collided one smashed into the home the impact brought down the power lines. >> the officer jumped out of the cop cars face was bloody and everything. >> all four officers were taken to the hospital in stable condition. the 24-year-old suspect was arrested. a pennsylvania state trooper shot in the line of duty continues to improve. authorities say corporal seth kelly is no longer listed in critical condition at saint luke's hospital in bethlehem. he has undergone several successful surgeries to remove bullets. corporal kelly was shot on tuesday, the accused gunman

daniel cleary has been charged with attempted murder. a second suspect wanted in a strict of violent attacks in center city and university city is in custody. the suspect surrendered to penn police yesterday afternoon. police say he and 20-year-old lance ryan attacked a penn grad student last weekend leaving him with a fractured skull. police believe they are tied to other similar robberies. police in radnor township arrested this man michael leann clrnlgd -- charged him with stalking a local youtube star michael lee has thousands of followers on youtube and twitter. police believe his online popularity drew the attention. the man has been arrested. penn state revealed it paid

out $16 million in relation to sexual abuse by jerry sandusky bringing the total to $100 million. the school reported it settled with 33 people for $93 million. sandusky is serving what is a life term for sexually abusing young boys while a football coach at penn state. teachers in chester county have a new contract they will get a 3% raise in change for paying more of their healthcare costs. 737578, a north philadelphia community has come together to improve their neighborhood. they have poured their hearts into making their streets an expansion of their homes. park. perfect timing for this. it opened yesterday. temperatures were a lot of colder yesterday. there's a chance we could reach 60 degrees next weekend, at least for one of the two weekend days, but i think from this point on we'll see seasonable temperatures that tend to trend below average from time to time. the week that was, 70 degrees monday, that was five days ago, we were talking about almost summer-like conditions. he feels raking the yard and sweating and wearing a short sleeved shirt and temperatures now in the teens and 20s. yesterday's afternoon high, 39 degrees and windchills in the 20s. now we're down to 24. philadelphia has gotten as low as 23. other locations in the viewing area dropped into the 18, 19-degree range. dewpoint, 9. wind blustery out of the north/northwest at 1 miles per hour, the pressure is holding

steady. the 23 degrees that we reached think this morning that's the first time we've seen temperatures this low so early in the season since 1976. it's almost a half century ago, it's been a long long time since we've seen a good cold shot in the philadelphia area. 15 for the poconos. 22 in trenton. you set a new record low. wilmington set a new record low. atlantic city tied the record. hillville, 22, cape may, 25 degrees. you factor in the winds. this is why you have to bundle up in multiple layers this morning. area wide windchills are in the teens. 13 in philadelphia. 11 in reading. 12 in wilmington, 12 in trenton. 12 this dover. 17 degrees is what it feels like in millville. this is something you would see in the middle of january not the beginning of november. satellite and radar this right hear that is that huge area of high pressure, the arctic high

sitting over top of the mid atlantic city and the northeast states. the good news it is moving along quickly. by the time we get into tomorrow this is here we'll see the clouds approach from the west, winds out of the southeast and tempts will jump a little bit. we'll get in the upper 40s close to 50 degrees. we're on the cold side of the high. mid atlantic and northeast states, cold breeze high temperatures in the upper 30s. this area approaches from the west and winds shift and it gets milder with high temperatures in the upper 40s close to 50. not much to talk about today, it's just cold, mostly sunny skies, overnight tonight partly cloudy, it's remains quiet tomorrow with the shifting winds we start to see the clouds increase from the west. we'll go mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s. some of the rain will be farther to the west than the model is showing, accuweather is allowing
