they couldn't say enough about this man. he was a very loyal employee here at their business for more than 20 years and this is the stretch of road you can see marked off with some police paint of where he was walking down. again, just going to work imagine that, struck and hit by a car and then that's the swamp of where this suspect ran into. the view from chopper6 shows where the suspect's car a white 2000 ford focus lost control and drove into a ditch just seconds before police say the driver hit a pedestrian and as a result killed him. the seen is in the 2900 block of state road in croydon. according to the owner of rail way specialties corporation, the victim was a loyal employee of more than 20 years. >> he was always, always, you know, the first guy to say i'll stay, i'll work extra, i'll do more. just to help the business. >> reporter: that's tom. he says the victim was walking to work like he typically did. you can see by the location of where he hit he almost made it. culkin says he ran down to the victim after he was hit. >> it was a good samaritan

monica. >> thank you, bob. we're also following a developing story out of edgemoor, delaware where authorities are on the scene of a double shooting in a motel. this one happened in the day one motel in the 5,000 block of governor prince boulevard. authorities responded to the call at 2:00 p.m. "action news" has now learned two people are dead. it's not clear what the circumstances are or if the detectives are looking for suspects yet. we will that continue to follow this story for you and bring you updates as soon as we get them. >> a young temple university student is lying in a hospital bed tonight because he was simply trying to do the right thing. authorities say he was attacked from behind while walking two female students home. "action news" reporter chad pradelli live outside hahnemann hospital this evening and chad, you spoke to the victim's parents. >> reporter: the parents are obviously troubled by the attack. they're inside the hospital as we speak watching their son recuperate as police zero in on the suspect. >> something no parents wants. >> reporter: the call came in around 3 a.m. sunday.

tanner was in the hospital with serious head injuries. parents denise and joe rushed two hours from pottsville to hahnemann hospital. >> he does have a busted ear drum. he had a severe concussion. the bone above his ear is fractured. >> reporter: investigators say the temple sophomore was walking two female students home when he was attacked from behind here at 17th and norris. >> it looks like our offender attempted to pick a fight with our victim and during the course of that he grabbed him around his throat and threw him to the ground. >> he's 140 pounds soaking wet. he's not a fighter. he's a basketball player, he likes to play basketball, you know, he's just a friendly kid and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: he remembers nothing of the attack. "action news" has learned the suspect is a high school senior at an archdiocesan high school and an accomplished wrestler. we're not naming the 18-year-old because he hasn't been formally charged. >> we do have leads on the suspect so hopefully we can

chester. that bus was carrying students from chester community charter school. the students who were hurt were taken to the hospital to be evaluated and were discharged. no word if the driver of the minivan will be charged. detectives in delaware are trying to determine how this car ended up in the brandywine creek. >> sentencing under way for a former south carolina police officer who shot an unarmed man after a traffic stop. on day one of the hearing for michael slager they played cell phone and dashcam video that showed the shop and the shooting right there. slager says it shows him acting in a calm demeanor. prosecutors think the video predicts the callus behavior of the officer. slager faces up to life in prison. president donald trump has formally endorsed the candidacy of republican alabama senate nominee roy moore. trump spoke to moore on the phone today. moore's campaign says trump called moore a fighter. he's been accused of sexually assaulting teenaged girls when he was in his 30's. more denies the allegations.

>> ♪ >> health check at 5:00 tonight. a medical break through in texas is giving some women in our area hope. >> it is the first successful birth of a baby in the u.s. born to a woman who had a uterus transplant. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us with details on how some local doctors could be doing this procedure in philadelphia. >> penn medicine announced just last month that they're doing a similar clinical trial. i spoke with two of the researchers today who are thrilled to hear about the successful birth in texas. it's a medical milestone. for the first time in the united states a woman who had a uterus transplant has given birth. the baby boy was born last month via c-section at baylor university medical center in dallas. his mother is part of a clinical trial there. researchers at penn medicine recently launched a similar trial. the goal is to help women without a functioning uterus be able to carry a child with

a transplanted uterus. until last month, it had only been done successfully in sweden. but there is -- ecstatic it worked in texas. >> i'm so happy for the patient. this is a long haul for them and i can only having spoken to these patients i can imagine this woman's joy so i'm so incredibly happy for her. >> reporter: the team at penn is that currently screening possible patients. dozens of experts have signed on to help. transplant surgeon page porrit says just this surgery itself is extremely complex. >> the arteries and the veins of the uterus are delicate structures. they're in an anatomically challenging place in the body. there might be other transplant surgeons that might disagree with this but i think it's the most complicated transplant we've undertaken. >> reporter: but they have been practicing in the lab and today there is an even greater sense of hope. >> now that we've seen that baylor can do it i think that

>> ♪ >> you no doubt heard by now over the week the senate passed new tax code legislation which would overhaul a system that's not been largely changed since the 1980's. republican senator pat toomey talked about why he supported the bill. he says it would lower the tax burden for most american families and restructures the business tax code to make american companies more competitive. >> this is i think the most important element in driving up wages, in diminishing the income inequality in this country and allowing labor to get a bigger share of our total economy, it is making workers more productive and there's no question that our tax bill does that. >> in pittsburgh today a group of protesters stood outside senator toomey's office with signs protesting his support of the tax bill. two women even chained themselves to the office door and the were later removed.

>> we did not have the time to read and review a 500 page bill that makes trillions of dollars of impact on our economy for the next decade. so, i don't think any of the senator who's were voting really knew the full content of what was in it especially given the significant last minute changes that were made to secure a few holdout republican votes. >> and that of course was delaware democrat senator chris coons who has been a staunch opponent of this tax bill. and who voted against the over the weekend. the tax reform legislation still has several more steps to pass before it ultimately becomes law. >> a group of nonprofit organizations in delaware will share nearly $300,000 in grants. that money from is the state financial literacy education fund. some respiratories -- recipients include the boys and girls clubs.

it's a possible new legal defense for the president. the president's lawyer john dowd telling abc news the president cannot be guilty of obstruction of justice in his role because he is the chief law enforcement officer of the united states. and can give his opinion on any legal case. the claim follows this statement which dowd says he wrote from the president's twitter account. i had to fire general flynn because he lied to the vice president and the fbi. that led to speculation the president was admitting he knew flynn lied to the fbi before he tried to get james comey to go easy on flynn. >> wanted me to drop any investigation connected to flynn's account of his conversation with the russians. >> reporter: multiple legal experts disagree with the president's lawyer saying a president can obstruct justice. >> there is no question that a president of the united states can break the law. legal scholars believe that a sitting president can't be prosecuted for a crime while

somalia sudan and yemen. lower courts are partially blocked that ban. the presidentially is facing criticism for his decision to down size two national monuments in utah the bear's ear monument will be reduced to 230,000 acres from its current 1.5 million acres and the grand staircase escalante will drop from 2 million to 1 million its a federal review of monuments that began earlier this year. >> i've come to utah to take a very historic action. to reverse federal overreach and restore the rights of this land to your citizens. >> now protesters outside the state capitol want to preserve the monuments to help protect tribal lands but ranchers who support the decision say the monuments took away their grazing rights on wide swaths of land.

>> two people have been arrested in connection with several armed robberies in both haverford and lower merion. 37-year-old jessica et z or and matthew jiminez are charged with robbery terroristic threats and simple assaults. they approached victims with a knife and stole money and credit cards. those two are charged in a similar incident days later in lower merion township. in delaware detectives with the new castle county police department are investigating a hit-and-run after a man was found injured here last week. investigators say 31-year-old anthony flip pen was found injured near freedom road and 76th street in bear last tuesday. he died later that day. investigators found surveillance video that they say shows a vehicle hit, him him -- hitting him and leaving the scene. a description of the vehicle hasn't been released. >> we know the names of two people killed in a multi vehicle crash in wilmington delaware last week. the crash happened at noon on friday. state police say a

tractor-trailer's tire blew out and detached from the vehicle. the driver of a ford focus, 56-year-old virginia bryce swerved to avoid that tire but collided with another car before hitting a waste tank truck parked on the shoulder of the road. bryce was pronounced dead at the scene. 81-year-old charles butcher who was in the front seat of the ford focus later died at christiana hospital. a 13-year-old boy in the same vehicle was treated for serious injuries. a man was seriously injured after being hit by a car while crossing a highway in atlantic county, new jersey. it happened around midnight in the eastbound lanes of the east black horse pike in egg harbor township. the victim was taken to an area hospital. the driver did stop nearby. so far no word on any charges. >> a former villanova student accused of using a hidden camera to target unsuspecting women and girls has been convicted on all charges. authorities say vincent cane had more than 51,000 lewd images and videos when

arrested last year. he allegedly used his job at a cvs in broomall as well as his time at cardinal o'hara high school and at villanova to create the materials. cane will be sentenced next month. a cash register was stolen from a center city restaurant and now police are searching for the man responsible. police say the suspect parked a dark colored suv in the 700 block of locust street about 5 o'clock saturday night. he then walked into labooka restaurant took the cash register and ran. he may be driving a late model ford escape. anyone with information is asked to contact police. >> well, more reports of sexual misconduct and harassment have come to light in politics media and hollywood pennsylvania's governor is taking some action. governor tom wolf's office is developing way to handle anonymous reports of inappropriate sexual behavior in the state capitol. the office will determine which agency will that handle such reports should they arise. there have not been any public reports of criminal sexual harassment or assault from the

state capitol in recent months. >> a pennsylvania state trooper who was shot on the job in november has now been released from the hospital. saint luke's tells "action news" corporal seth kelly has been discharged after being treated for injuries sustained during a traffic stop november 7th here in northampton county. the man accused of shooting kelly daniel clary remains behind bars. this afternoon k-9 moose was given ballistic body armor. the armor was presented by members of the capitol k-9 association. k-9 moose will wear the armor in a case the suspect may be armed. his handler says it makes him feel good that his dog partner is protected too. >> happy dog. time to check conditions on the roads this afternoon. >> over to matt pelman to see how things are rolling out there. hey, matt. >> let's check in with the unhappy drivers. we've got plenty of them this evening, brian and monica, here on 95 you just missed a

crash in the southbound lanes by philadelphia international airport. i have a feeling you're probably not too disappointed. all that's left of that accident is this one vehicle offer to the slide. but it is slow as you come southbound off the the girard point bridge. northbound is plaque blacked -- backed up heading to the sixers game. traffic on the westbound vine street expressway is jammed solid coming off of 95 and delays from that respect spilling back to the ben franklin bridge which is also jammed solid coming in from new jersey from the tolls in camden up and over into eighth and vine so if you're coming into pennsylvania from new jersey you want to do so via the betsy or the walt, not the ben franklin this afternoon. have a crash in collingswood to watch out for along cuthbert boulevard near belmont avenue. don't forget the schuylkill is closing eastbound overnights this week. that starts at 11:00 and 422 also is closing overnight as you head towards pottstown.
