do such a great american accent. but you are australian. where did you grow up? >> on the gulf coast but the hinter land part of gulf coast. >> chris: the hinterland? >> i grew up on property and fields. >> chris: i've been to -- i don't support like -- like i hate the stereotype. like everyone thinks oh, you're from australia, there's creepy, crawly, poisonous, venomous things all over the place. but are you there creepy, crawly, poisonous, venomous things all over the place? >> kind of. not something you concentrate on growing up. the largest percentage of poisonous snakes in the world reside in australia and spiders and sharks. >> chris: there's sharks and poisonous spiders and snakes. dangerous creatures. >> but when you live there you don't think about it or worry about it. they're there but didn't seem like a big deal. >> chris: ten of your closest friends growing up, how many of

them were killed by poisonous spiders? seven? [ laughter ] >> no, i mean, i grew up on property and i don't even know someone -- i had snakes literally in my house growing up. >> chris: what? >> no like on purpose. they would get into the house or whatever. >> chris: what would be the biggest snake? >> like a carpet python. if they've got like a gold pattern on their back, they're a carpet python and they're fine. often if they're little they're more poisonous. so you get them out with a stick instead of picking them up. >> chris: a stick? like a stick -- you keep a stick, a poisonous snake removing stick? >> this one time, my mom came -- i was in my bratty teen years, and my mom came in and says, can you help me get the snake out of the house. i was like, mom, i'm really busy on msn, like no. and she was like, it's a big one, though. i was like, so busy, mom, no. then she went away and ten

minutes later i was like, where's mom? [ laughter ] >> chris: oh, no. >> that's when my mom got eaten -- no. [ laughter ] >> chris: oh, my god. terrified. >> after a while, she hasn't come back in the house. she's on the driveway and this python was huge. it wrapped its way -- she tried to carry it out. it wrapped its way around her arm and trying to strangle her around her neck. and she was trying to call out to me. i saw her and i knew from that point on, next time mom asks to get a snake out of the house, just do it. don't be a brat about it. >> chris: just remove the giant snake from your mom, use the stick method. so just completely shifting topics to a more james liptony type of question. if you could have lunch with any celebrity -- >> mm-hmm. >> chris: -- living or dead, would you take them to outback

[ applause ] so i'm curious about this because you made a movie about a real person, an infamous figure skater. i mean, she's tonya harding. what's that like? is she part of the process? is she there on set? >> i met her. she wasn't a consultant on set. o'reilly did a series of

interviews with her and then did a series of interviews with jeff gillooly and both their stories contradicted each other so much, he thought that was the best way to tell this story, to have all these unreliable narrators with conflicting storylines and letting the audience decide for themselves. so i got to meet her right before we started shooting. other than that, she wasn't on set or anything. but we showed her the movie right before we premiered at toronto, so yeah. >> chris: do you think she's watching this right now? >> i don't know. if she is, hi, tonya. >> chris: what's up, tonya harding? you nailed the character of tonya harding. that has to be difficult when there's so many conflicting perspective on how it went down. the skating is off the chain. how long did you train with the skating? >> i did a lot of training. i did maybe four months of training, four or five months.

it was like five days a week, three or four hours a day. it was a lot. >> chris: damn. that's good. [ applause ] >> nothing, by the way, compared to what an olympic ice skater -- >> chris: did you skate with tonya harding? >> i didn't. but when i met her, she was so lovely, she was more worried about me than about her. how are you doing with the skating? it's really hard, actually. do you need any tips? do you want me to help -- we can go to the ice skating ring now. do you have your skates with you? no, they didn't let me bring them on the plane. >> chris: you should have said that they were emotional support skates. >> i should. >> chris: then you could bring them on the plane. i was the very first person to ever get our next guest's new album, but i left the cd in the backseat of a car because he got me so drunk in nashville. i had to buy it on itunes, which is exactly what you should do tonight. it's called "from a room, volume 2" and it's available now. please welcome my friend, chris stapleton. >> chris: i don't want a repeat of nashville. here's to you because, i'm going to tell you what, this man has a great number of things to celebrate. we'll get into all that. but here's to you. [ applause ] thank you, guillermo. first and foremost -- [ laughter ] he doesn't know how to drink anything but tequila. >> maybe we should get him some tequila. >> chris: he's full. don't worry. he can't have more tequila in him. first, if i can share this. >> sure. i don' you're going to share. >> chris: morgan, your lovely wife, is pregnant with twins. >> that's true. [ applause ] >> chris: now, another thing to

celebrate is your album. i already showed it once. this is called "from a room, volume 2." not from a room. >> not lower case. >> chris: from a room volume i which is nominated for three grammys. that's a -- we got too much stuff. we're going to be doing a lot of this. explain, explain a room. because the first time i thought -- i'm a huge fan, a huge fan. i'm a huge fan. i'm fan girling right now. i want to touch his beard. can i? it's so soft. you know, i thought it was from a room. i thought it was kind of vague. just from a room somewhere. >> maybe i thought i was being clever. but it's -- you know, rcaa is a historic studio is famous where dolly parton, waylon jennings have recorded over the years.

a lot of magic in that room. there was a time where we made the travel record where that room was in danger of being torn down and made into condos. when we made this album we were looking for an album cover and i wanted to pay tribute to that room where we made all three of these last records. from the historic rca studio a in nashville, tennessee. >> chris: that's really great. [ applause ] you've got a quality about you. you know this. i think you know this. we've got to know one another. it starts with this. this is -- see this? [ laughter ] okay. explain this. this is -- >> is this the -- >> chris: this is the tape cassette that you sent me. >> well, you had mentioned something about some of our music on one of your ip sta gram posts. i didn't know you were such a country music fan. but then it turned out that you

were going to have guardian of the galaxy 2 released and i had that record released on the same day. so i thought it would be cute to send you a little mix tape. i spent about 45 minutes on that label. >> chris: then i got it and i was so moved. anyone who knows me knows that i like really good country music and really good people. you do both of those real well. i got that album or i got that, i listened to the mix tape, i made an instagram post about it. we started hanging out. then you graciously invited me down to nashville where i was able to get up on stage with you and sing the last chorus of "tennessee whiskey." only two people have been given this honor. one was justin timberlake. he's an upstart singer. you'll know more about him at some point. [ laughter ] and peyton manning, i believe. >> peyton manning did it in denver. >> chris: so we all know who was the best. but who was second best, peyton

manning or justin timberlake? >> i'm sorry, it was probably peyton. [ cheers and applause ] >> chris: so we did that, it was a lot of fun. we were drinking this exact bhi whiskey backstage. then we proceeded to have, from what i'm told, the greatest night of our lives. >> that's how i remember it, yes. >> chris: i heard from my friend jared who was hanging out with us, we were going shot for shot of whiskey deep into the night. we closed down one bar. >> that's true. >> chris: then we went to a second bar. >> you knew where someplace was that i didn't know. we went to two places i've never been to in my life because you decided to go -- you wanted to go into the most touristy area right after our show. >> chris: the concert. >> we snat tat in the corner of bar with ropes on display like we were zoo animals.

i drank doubles and chased them with shots. the rest is what it is. >> chris: from what i hear there was a moment when -- i pride myself on being able to hold my liquor. at one point i said, i'm done. i'm done. and you said, i win.
