stay in your homes. roadways are shut down and we have an action news crew on the way to the scene and we will bring you the latest as soon as we get it. >> it appears pitch black for a couple of seconds but luckily a dash cam caught it. what can be described as a fire ball zoomed across the sky parking imaginations and plenty of questions. >> a stunning sight over south jersey early saturday morning. a hamilton township's police officer dash camera recorded a fire ball streaking across the sky. >> and those who were awake caught a glimpse of something out of this world. sarah bloomquist live in the satellite center with those details. >> reporter: this is the hamilton township police department in atlantic county. they posted this video, dash cam video of this bright light streaking across the sky on their social media accounts today and they've already been viewed thousands of times. it turns out the sergeant who captured the video was not the

only one to see it. hundreds of people did. what was it? we asked an excerpt. the video lasted just seconds. >> i was on regular patrol driving through our neighborhoods and i saw the streak of light. >> reporter: sergeant michael virga of the hamilton township police department was out on patrol just after 3:00 saturday morning. he was driving along the road near the airport when he saw the bolt of light. >> i was surprised to see what i was seeing so i knew i had the mobile camera. >> his dash cam captured the event. today the department posted the video to social media sites and those videos are going viral. >> we researched a little further and contacted the american meteor society and they have had reports of similar activity arntd the same time. >> reporter: the american meteor society's website recorded sightings in many states.

he explained the bright light was just that, a fire ball. an unusualual bright meteor colliding with the earth's atmosphere. >> i can tell it was most likely a cometary fire ball and we traced back the speed and it intersected with gemini. >> reporter: there have been a few fireball sightings in this region recently. the geminid meteor shower, these fourballs could be a start of the shower ahead of that period. this one december 2nd was pretty rare because it was big and it was so bright.

live in the satellite center, i'm sarah bloomquist, channel 6 action news. monica? >> thank you, sarah. the pennsylvania turnpike was shut down earlier after this crash. chopper 6 over the scene. you can see a great-colored vehicle smashed into the back end of one of the big rigs. amazingly nobody was injured. in bucks county a tractor-trailer wreck caused delays for much of the day. the truck went off the road spilling boxes full of tito's vodka. the ramp didn't reopen until afternoon. the truck driver was taken to the hospital to be checked out. >> turning to our weather tonight we knew it was on the way and we are tracking it. the first accumulating snow of the season. meteorologist cecily tynan is at the big board with those details. >> it's that time of the year. december is typically when we start to get the cold air, start

to get the snow and if you look at these temperatures across the iron half of the country you can see we're not alone. there's a lot of cold air in place, philadelphia seasonably cool, chicago and cincinnati in the 20s. you have to head to southern florida to have temperatures above normal. double scan live showing moisture gathering across the south. if you look south of dallas, parts of mexico that cold air is catching up it's snowing already in parts of texas and mexico. earlier than even the snow that's moving here. this is going to be a saturday event for us. future tracker showing as we head through friday, you can see some of that moisture in the form of snow beginning to develop across the deep south, the tennessee valley, atlanta likely will get snow, even parts of louisiana and alabama. saturday is when the snow will be moving in and notice it's not just confined across south jersey and delaware. it will also be reaching our

northwest suburbs. we're not talking about an epic snow event but the first snow of the season, this is likely where we get the grassy ecamulations. the main roads just wednesday but saturday night there could be icing. >> of course we invite you to keep up with any changes to the forecast, including real-time views from storm-tracker 6, by visiting 6abc.com/weather or by downloading the free 6abc app. >> it has been more than three weeks since a massive fire tore through a west chester senior community and today chopper 6 surveyed the remains of the barkley's senior center. the residents try to recover their lives and start again. annie mccormick at the scene and two west chester students are helping those residents tonight, aren't they? >> reporter: that's right. and as for the investigation, federal investigators say they are closing in on a cause but it does remain under investigation. in the meantime the community is

still rallying around the residents who lived here. weeks after the deadly fire at barkley friends, the devastation remains. investigators from the alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives are still investigating to you the blaze began. four people died and 150 were evacuated when a fire ravaged the senior assisted living center. >> it was heart-wrenching to watch. we heard there was a fire and we turned on the news. we sat and cried a little bit and okay what are we going to do about it. >> reporter: it hit home for these students. they volunteered and bonded with many of the residents. >> the advice that we learned from them was incredible so we wanted to make sure we gave back. >> reporter: volunteers at the spca also had a connection. >> we would go every week to bring puppies to the residents. >> reporter: today together the students and spca teamed up collecting admission to pet and adopt pupys.

the line was out the door. the night of the fire the residents jumped into action. since then the fund raising has been steady. today the need is specific. >> a lot of the residents lost dentures, hearing aids, glasses in the fire and they didn't have funds to replace that. >> reporter: both the spca and the students say the fundraisers will continue. for now reporting live in west chester, annie mccormick, channel 6 action news. >> thank you, annie. al franken announced he is resigning from the senate but he made it clear it's not by choice. he told his colleagues that some of the allegations are false, others he does remember differently. franken added that being a senator has been the great honor of his life. >> but this decision is not about me. it's about the people of minnesota. it's become clear that i can't both pursue the ethics committee process and at the same time

remain an effective senator for them. >> reporter: senator franken's decision is sending waves through the halls of congress and up pennsylvania avenue and we'll hear from both sides coming up at 5:30. >> a person walked into an aztec, new mexico high school today and started shooting. tonight that person is dead along with two students. authorities have not released details about the shooter. the school was cordoned off as deputies cleared the buildings. still not clear what touched off the shooting or the motive or if the targets were random. world news tonight with david muir will have more on the school shooting as well as al franken's announcement today. you can watch it all tonight at 6:30 following action news at 6:00. >> time right now, first check traffic report thursday night. >> hi, gina. >> it looks like christmas lights behind me but unfortunately this is delays that we're seeing on 95. if we're heading out right along

commemorated that tragic day. chopper 6 hovered near as a squadron of planes flew over the ship as veterans and crew gathered for special services. they played taps and threw a wreath into the delaware to honor the lives of the men who died. and flags were seen flying at half mast today in honor of pearl harbor remembrance day. all capital flags throughout the complex and throughout the state to be lowered and that included here at philadelphia city hall. the attack on pearl harbor took more than 2,400 american lives. >> a different kind of elective

yoga and mindfulness for elementary school students. >> ali gorman visited the classroom and joins us at the action news big board with that story. >> reporter: this is one of the only schools in philadelphia that has yoga as part of the regular curriculum. many of the students i spoke with say it helps them throughout the day. teachers and administrators are also noticing the benefits. third grade students are practicing calming their minds and bodies with yoga. a former teacher is now the yoga and mindfulness instrekttor at first philadelphia prep charter school. this is the second year yoga has been part of the curriculum. >> just like students would receive music, art, gym, one of their special areas is yoga. >> and so far it's been a hit with the kids. >> i think it's fun and it helps you calm down. >> start to slowly shift your

weight into one leg. >> reporter: matthews tailors the sessions specifically for young students. a movement piece gets their blood flowing, the mindfulness aspect keechs kids to slow down, focus, and gives them tools to control feelings and behaviors. >> it helps me feel better and when i'm upset and i come into the yoga room, it's so nice and so cool. >> reporter: ceo of the school says since starting the program, they've noticed a positive impact. >> fewer suspensions, we've seen that in the two years. we are directly tying it to what the students are learning. >> reporter: matthews says the effects continue throughout the day. >> i kind of restore their energy so that when we leave the classroom and go back to do the academic work we're ready to get going again.

>> reporter: and the yoga program runs 14 weeks for kindergartners through sixth graders and it helps create those healthy habits that are more likely is to stick as kids become adults. >> i wish they had that here. >> verizon workers paid a visit to armstrong middle school to show them the technical part of the business by sharing their engineering experiences hope to inspire others to pursue the field. it was all about making cool things with legos today. students designed and built robots out of legos for a tug-of-war contest. they also learned the basic of building codes. in observance of computer science education week.

the scheduling glitch that gave nearly all of american airlines pilots off during the christmas holiday will cost the company $10 million to make sure they didn't have to cancel any flights, the airline and the union negotiated a pay increase

for pilots who offered to fly the unassigned flights. american airlines, the largest air carrier in the world employs nearly 15,000 pilots. residents in west chester gather at their local congressman's office demand that the vote is no on tax reform legislation. they held signs and chanted outside the office and someone inside his office as well. the people who were members of the concerned citizens action group and others say they're worried how the tax bill will negatively impact their lives. >> to help ring in the holiday season with celebration, mayor jim spoke at a luncheon at the ritz-carlton. proceeds go to the philadelphia youth network. 150 deserving children are having an early merry christmas thanks to these volunteers. the nonprofit association hosted this event for underprivileged

precipitation. >> you can say the word. >> we do have some snow head over to the action news weather center. i think it gets me in the christmas spirit. we're live on sky 6 taking a look at the philadelphia christmas tree which is all aglow and we are issuing a fireplace alert for the next several days. so make sure your fireplace is ready to go. make sure you have the wood. because not only are we talking about some snow on saturday also, temperatures for the next 7 days and actually probably well beyond that will be below normal first snow of the season likely on saturday and a direct shot of true arctic air. so two days in the next week, the afternoon high only rising up near freezing. the average high for this time of the year is 48 degrees. so temperatures are really going to plunge. right now it's not that bad out

there. 44 degrees. we reached a high of 47. allentown 39, cape may 45, reading 39 and wilmington currently 43 degrees. satellite and radar showing moisture gathering across the deep south it's all associated with the same frontal boundary that moved through here on tuesday, brought us that round of rain and now some colder air is catching up to it. waco, texas it's snowing right now and that snow will begin to gather across the northern fringe of the rain as it continues to move up to the north and the east. tomorrow it clouds up and with the clouds it's going to be chilly. temperatures just hovering in the 30s at 7:00, 34. by 1:00, 39. it will be a dry day tomorrow. we're not talking about any snow on friday. but on saturday it's another situation. you wake up saturday morning 8:00, it's cloudy and we do have some of that snow falling across parts of new jersey, parts of

delaware. it will extend to our north and west communities by saturday afternoon by 1:00, even some snow showers across the poconos and we'll see the line retreating as the system pulls away by saturday night. we're not talking about a major winter storm, but expect the snoel we're talking about talking grassy accumulations along the i-95 core dor. we're looking at the potential for 1-3 inches of grassy accumulations could coat the roads and do be careful any wet roads untreated could become icy. saturday that first snow 36, sunday the sun aback but it's windy and cold. 39 degrees. wind chills in the 20s. we moderate monday and tuesday. our next system with more snow showers on tuesday behind that even more colder air. we'll talk about that in the

wildfires. 100,000 acres have already burned plus a judge hands down a sentence for the former police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black motorist in south carolina. activists say this sends an important message. plus a temple university graduate and now road scholar is being honored by city council what he says is his motivation to do well. we begin with breaking news from bucks county where chopper 6 is over a barricade situation in brothers till. police and s.w.a.t. teams are surrounding this home.

investigators tell action news this is connected to the deadly hit and run accident in croydon earlier this wreak. officers have not yet arrested the driver responsible for that accident. take note because surrounding street has already been shut down. residents are being asked and urged to stay inside their homes. we have a news crew on the way and we'll bring you more information just as soon as we have it. >> thousands of firefighters battling four major wildfires in southern california and the weather simply not cooperating. high winds are fanning the flames and one fire is threatening a heavily populated area. marcy gonzalez joins us live. >> reporter: north of here the largest of those fires is still growing. from the smoke-lined coast

inland the fire fight intensifying yet again today as the thomas fire burns out of control. more than 96,000 acres charred there. just one of four wildfires still raging in southern california. >> devastating. >> reporter: the flames fanned by intense santa ana winds gusting some places overnight at hurricane force weakening some after daybreak but still an unpredictable event. >> wind is king. >> reporter: firefighters working tirelessly gaining some ground on the fire in los angeles that burned right up along one of the busiest freeways in the country, the 405. >> this is really frightening. there are a lot of homes here. >> reporter: and ravaged multimillion homes. but officials repeating the warning that the risk is far from over. >> and we still ask that folks stay away from their homes. we're not completely out of the woods yet. >> reporter: at this nursing home and in neighborhoods, thousands of new mandatory

but our culture shouldn't tolerate hypocrisy when elected officials say one thing and do another. on capitol hill today they discussed congressional policies surrounding complaints. paul ryan said today it was a water shed moment that needs to lead to lasting change. >> in addition to just better policies to protect women, we also need a culture change. we need to recognize this is a pervasive problem that women face not just here in congress but through every industry. >> during his speech, franken pointed a finger at president trump saying he has bragged on tape about sexual assault. when asked what he thought of those comments the president said he didn't see franken's speech. former olympic gymnastics doctor has been sentenced to 60 years behind bars for child pornography crimes in michigan. investigators found more than 37,000 images of child porn on his electronic devices.

several high profile gymnasts have said they were abused by him. >> the head of the fbi is defending his agency tonight after president trump said the bureau is in taters. christopher ray appeared before the house judiciary today. he said he is proud of the men and women who work at the fbi. >> the fbi that i see is tens of thousands of agents and analysts and staff working their tails off to keep americans safe from the next terrorist attack, gang violence, child predators, skies from russia, china, north korea and iran. >> he was also asked to explain the actions of a senior agent who allegedly sent out anti-trump messages. lawmakers wanted to assure such things will never happen again. >> there were violent protests today in the mid east in response to president trump's

announcement that the u.s. recognizes jerusalem as israel's capital. this was the scene as palestinians clashed with israeli troops. they fired tear gas and rubber bullets. more than 100 people were injured. today is the 76th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor and throughout the nation tribute to those who lost their lives are taking place. president trump signed a proclamation recognizing december 7th as pearl harbor remembrance day. he praised the vets as heros and thanked them for their service. it was on this day in 1941 that japan attacked the naval base in hawaii. that atk killed more than 2,300 servicemen. the u.s. declared war on japan the following day. in valley forge today they held a pearl harbor remembrance ceremony. local veterans told their war stories inside the freedoms foundation. the ceremony concluded outside

a long-time philadelphia tradition is under way in center city tonight. families enjoying the beautiful christmas light show at macy's. we love this. sugar plum farries and dancing snow men. the light show by the way is nature rated by the incredible julie andrews. the grand court has hosted this light show since 1956. i take my kids every year. we love it. >> it is wonderful. >> we've been talking about snow this weekend and we mentioned accumulating snow. what exactly does that mean.

we had today, again, the sun has set but now the clouds are coming in from the west and you see a stream of clouds missing us to the south right now but this is that southern jet stream and front that is going to throw precipitation our way. and you can see it started to generate in the deep south here. in fact they had winter storm warnings just north of new orleans here expecting several inches of snow that far south even houston could see some snow in the northern suburbs and you do see some snow breaking out around dallas and central parts of texas. so for tonight clouds on the increase, it's seasonable. 25 in the suburbs, 35 degrees for center city. winds northwest 6-12. future tracker showing during the day tomorrow -- let me fix my coat -- the clouds will be locked in from start to finish. as we go into the morning hours of saturday, 7:30, that's when you start to see those flakes falling south and east of philadelphia. punctures to the north and west saturday afternoon. the heaviest snow will be closer
