yesterday we were dealing with snowfall in texas through the southeast and up to the midatlantic as well. we'll go in tighter with storm tracker6 and what we are awaiting is an area of low pressure that's going to form just off the coast of the midatlantic region and will ride on the northern fringe of that colder air that we'll see mostly still across most locations as we get into the day saturday. so, winter storm warning has just been issued. we had a watch initially for south jersey that has been upgraded to a winter storm warning for in region also for dover delaware a winter weather advisory for the i-95 corridor and the immediate suburbs to the north and west. i want to focus your attention on the extreme coastal sections of south jersey, the purple shading, that's also a winter weather advisory so we do anticipate some mixing to take place right along the immediate coast. as far as the expected precip type, all snow for philadelphia, the i-95 corridor, the heart of our region but snow and rain mixing from atlantic city down

into wildwood. so, we'll talk about what we can expect. the snow will arrive during the overnight hours from the southeast to northwest direction. the steadiest of that snow moves in from 9:00 a.m. to 3 o'clock. highest totals south and east of philadelphia, slushy and slick roads is a big concern as we go throughout the rest of the day. we've got more details coming up with the full and exclusive accuweather forecast. we'll send it back over you to brian. >> melissa thank you. let's switch live to chad pradelli live at the penndot salt yard in norristown. chad, our very first live shot of the season there. i guess that means there's getting ready tonight. >> reporter: yeah, brian, hopefully not many more but a press conference under way as we speak as penndot updates us on its operations for this storm. a little bit of a lull right now but in a few hours, when the flakes begin to fall, things will certainly pick up. inside the penndot operations center all eyes on the roads and the weather radar. mother nature is expected to give the region its first dose

of snow. >> we're taking it seriously. they've seemed to up the totals and maybe that accumulations more into the city, southeast part of the i-95 corridor. >> reporter: crews already applied brine to the major arteries. here's drone6 over the salt yard in norristown. now it's await and see approach. >> we're waiting until we get closer to the storm to decide how many trucks we'll deploy but we'll be out overnight as soon as the first flakes start to fall. >> reporter: a warm fall has roads battle ready for the fluffy stuff but penndot is preparing for the worst. >> given the duration of the storm it's possible that those road temperatures will dip down and we'll start to see some accumulations which -- and we would move from salting to our plowing operation. >> reporter: and penndot does have a communications tool which allows people and consumers to get real-time conditions of the roadways and which roads have been plowed. that is 511pa.com. you can get a link to that at our web site 6abc.com.

"action news" reporter vernon odom live at temple university hospital with details. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, monica. the wounded officer has just been identified as kevin fay of the 39th district, that's kevin fay. he's left for home moments ago with his wife after treatment here at temple. he's in good condition tonight after a harrowing experience saving the life of an 80-year-old woman. just after 12:00 30 this

afternoon police came to this house at 29th and judson responding to a report of a vicious dog attack. when they got inside they found a pitbull mangling an 80-year-old resident of the house. the dog lived there too, police say. >> while in the course of striking that dog, one officer was struck with what we believe was a ricochet. fortunately that officer is going to be okay. he sustained a superficial wound to his right chin. >> reporter: the 80-year-old female who lives here and the target of the attack is not doing well suffering from multiple bites on her lower body. they're being called significant injuries. >> our officer is doing well and he decided he's going to be good and probably going home and we're really worried about the citizen who was really torn up pretty badly by this dog and i think our officers saved her life and hopefully she can hang on. >> reporter: for the record, the dog was killed. the investigation goes forward. and just moments ago, the 24-year-old officer from the

39th district was released from the temple university hospital and with his wife, is expecting a child, could be seen leaving for their home in the northeast. brian, again, the wounded officer just identified moments ago as 24-year-old kevin fay, aged 24. live at temple university hospital in north philadelphia, i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news." >> all right, vernon thank you so much. a flying piece of debris hit an suv on the pennsylvania turnpike this morning killing the driver. state police say 57-year-old gregory lieber from langhorne died on the scene in whitemarsh township. investigators say something flew off the truck traveling in the westbound lanes went over the median and then hit lieber's lincoln suv. troopers are still trying to identify the truck responsible. if you know anything about this crash, which happened at 10:30 this morning, you're asked to contact pennsylvania state police. >> a 48-year-old man is charged in a deadly hit-and-run that killed a

teenaged girl in trevose bucks county. police announce james howell was arrested in west philadelphia yesterday. investigators say how well hit 19-year-old jessica kurtz as she was walking with a friend on street road november 27th. he's being held at the bucks county prison. >> a judge in centre county sentenced jeffrey sandusky to prison today. the adopted son of jerry sandusky will spent three and a half to six years behind bars. in september the 42-year-old pleaded guilty to asking a girl to perform a sex act and pressuring her sister into sending him naked photos. in all he agreed to 14 counts of child abuse. a fire in wissinoming spread from one home to another. it broke out on the 6400 block of marsden street about 4:30 this morning. firefighters think a hoarding situation might be partially to blame. they were still able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes and no one was injured. >> plans are moving forward to

relocate two new jersey state office buildings despite objections from residents. the project in question is this $250 million deal for new offices for the state's health agriculture and taxation department. opponents wanted the project stalled until a new governor takes over in january but yesterday the statehouse commission voted to move ahead. governor chris christie says once the current buildings are torn down private development will build in that space. >> four philadelphia firefighters are on a mission to help the victims of hurricane maria in puerto rico. george perez jr. and his colleagues checked in for their flight this morning at philadelphia international airport. they are bound for that island to help distribute food and water to so many residents who are still in dire need of assistance. all four of these firefighters have family in puerto rico and they're hoping to check on their loved ones during this visit. >> you have to go to certain areas of the island just to get a signal, so we're hoping that while we're over there doing what we can, we want to be able to touch -- touch base with some of the family, also. >> now, these firefighters

will be in puerto rico for two weeks. they'll be working with the salvation army right throughout that trip. >> sounds nice. >> yeah. >> time for a check of the "action news" traffic report friday afternoon. >> all right, we made it. gina gannon in for matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center trying to get us home on a friday. >> that's right i think you said the optical word we made it. on the big picture we have some slow speeds on the map. look at this on the vine we have 12 miles per hour on the schuylkill single digits 7 miles per hour. 95 now we have our typical backup out there from really i would say columbus boulevard through to about the area of allegheny. southbound we're seeing a delay out there on 95 around that betsy ross bridge. also don't forget tonight at the wells fargo center we're seeing andrea bocceli at 8:00 p.m. the vine is jammed, the schuylkill expressway and also the southbound side of the blue route but i want to show you the schuylkill expressway. we had an earlier issue at the montgomery avenue off-ramp. that has since cleared but it's left us with a really big westbound delay. so, traveling on the schuylkill westbound at

montgomery drive expect some big delays particularly in general at your travel time on the westbound side of the schuylkill between the vine to the blue route about 30 minutes. eastbound just about 28. here eastbound at montgomery drive you're okay but just about girard through the vine you will be heavy and then those northwestern suburbs we always have those backups. the vine street expressway i like what i'm seeing here only a bit of a delay now on the westbound side of the vine from really broad street out to this point at 76 but if you're checking out that eastbound side you're good to go if you're trying make your way from 76 onto the vine. accident in upper moreland township at county line road at davisville road. little fender-bender there. brian and monica back to you. >> thank you gina. still ahead on "action news" chilling new details about a deadly school shooting in new mexico. the shooter left a message behind and that's not all. find out how he got into the building in the first place. >> plus, those fires in southern california are still spreading today. we're at the scene with the latest on the fire fight and the race to protect homes. >> ♪

>> ♪ >> we have some new details about yesterday's deadly school shooting in new mexico. the fbi is now revealing that it interviewed the gunman last year about comments he made online. the 21-year-old who opened fire killing two students got inside that school by disguising himself as a student there. the fbi says at the time they talked to him last year he said he had no plans for any kind of attack. the san juan county sheriff says the gunman left a message saying work school and his life were bad and that he wanted out. the suspect did take his own life. a number of wildfires in southern california continue to pose major threat to residents in that region. the fires are growing as crews work around the clock to protect -- rather contain the blazes and protect the neighborhoods. cnn's omar jimenez is in

southern california with the latest. >> reporter: the shear size of the california wildfires is creating a tough environment for officials on the ground. the thomas fire raging in southern california is more than twice the size of washington, d.c. and is the biggest fire los angeles has battled since 1961. 190,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. >> we're with you all the way. it's a long process to recovery. it's very painful. it's very emotional to be losing your home. >> reporter: 6700 firefighters are working to contain these blazes. on friday, president donald trump approved an emergency declaration freeing up federal funds. 1300 california national guard man's have been activated and officials warn even when the fire is out the danger is still there. >> all these burning stumps and logs you get any kind of wind on those and all it takes is one ember to jump that road and we're off and running again. >> reporter: doesn't get any easier from here with wind

gusts in the region up to 60 miles per hour and dry conditions continuing throughout the weekend, the potential for the fires to get worse before they get better is very real. at one point it was burning an acre a second and it is now within the top 20 most destructive fires in this state's recorded history. wind gusts are expected to be slightly down but still between 35 and 55 miles per hour through at least sunday. reporting from southern california i'm omar jimenez, channel6 "action news." >> president trump's travel ban is now fully operational after the supreme court's ruling earlier this week. the ban restricts citizens from six mostly muslim countries and north korea as well as government officials from venezuela from getting u.s. visas. the high court decided to allow the ban's enforcement while it is challenged in the lower courts. critics view the ban as an attempt to keep muslims out of the country. administration officials say it made its decision based on each country's security situation.

time for a look at the day's closing numbers on wall street. all three indices are up in the positive zone, dow jones up 117 and change, the nas knack rising 27 and the s & p 500 up 14 and a half. >> camden's baseball stadium is being torn down as part of a $15 million project. in its place will be fields for the community and rutgers camden athletes to use. the school voted yesterday to invest $7.5 million to help redevelop this area. when campbell's field was first built back in 1999 there was high expectations for its success but it had financial issues and lost its minor league team the river sharks. the city of camden will ask for money from the state to help pay for renovations. so far there is no demolition say the set just yet. in bristol bucks county a nonprofit has a new headquarters to help better serve the community. salute to service celebrated the grand opening of its offices on bath road. volunteers will use it to run their outreach program.

the group focuses on helping homeless veterans. >> a good grade and a new report tonight. five poor neighborhoods now have new pre-k centers creating 250 new teaching jobs like these. 20 of the providers are bilingual and look at this, 97 percent of the parents are happy with their child's preparation for kindergarten. the new soda beverage tax pays for the. >> malcolm jenkins will be representing the eagles. league officials chose one player from each team who they feel has outstanding community service off the field and excellence on the field. the group will be narrowed to three finalists in january and a winner will be announced during an awards ceremony before the super bowl in february. jenkins tweeted about the honor thanking everyone for their support. and the eagles of course take on the rams in l.a. on sunday and we want to see your team pride. keep sending your fan photos

across extreme sections of south jersey there in cape may. it will continue to fill in for fortescue sea isle city and eventually this will move on in from a southeast to northwest direction as we go throughout the rest of tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. as far as the temperatures, we've got some cold air in place. it's 38 degrees in philadelphia. in cape may where we're dealing with light snow 38 there. below freezing in the poconos, 26. 34 for allentown and reading. 35 degrees out to the west in lancaster. also down in dover. here's satellite6 along with action radar. we are tracking this elongated system here through the midatlantic region back through the southeast and even the southern plains but you look offshore you could see that frontal boundary that moved through our area earlier this week. it has moved offshore and this is the front that we will track because an area of low pressure forms right along that front and that will help to enhance the snowfall across the midatlantic region. so we'll time it out for you. future tracker6 showing 11 o'clock tonight we've got some light snow starting to

fill in in south jersey and also in delaware. it continues by 7 o'clock in the morning by day break, that snow approaching the i-95 corridor, also for areas to the south and east. as we go throughout the afternoon hours, 1 o'clock, the snow for most locations but you notice down across extreme sections of south jersey we're noticing a mixing line. that will put a cap on some of the snow totals we see across extreme coastal section of new jersey. by 5 o'clock that snow is starting to taper and by 10:30 tomorrow night we've got leftover showers and some flurries overhead. so, as far as expected snowfalls we tweaked this map just a little bit. one to 2 inches for the poconos down to allentown reading and lancaster. about two to 4 inches for philadelphia, that i-95 corridor but four to 8-inches across interior sections of south jersey and two to 4 inches for atlantic city and also into wildwood where we do anticipate some mixing that

will take place throughout this storm. as it will be snowing for a good portion of the day tomorrow. so road impacts, mainly on the highways and the main highways there will be a moderate concern but any of those overpasses secondary roads and even the sidewalks we do have a high concern because of the slush and the accumulation that we are expecting on some locations. so, the four day at 4:00 showing you we've got an accuweather alert tomorrow its snowy and cold, a high temperature of 34. the highest accumulations south and east of philadelphia. on sunday, a high temperature of 39, wind chills, however, in the 20's. monday partly sunny, 41. rain and snow showers likely as we get into tuesday with a high temperature in at 42. but cold air follows in behind that. we'll take a closer look at that, guys, coming up at 4:30 and also more on the snow we're expecting throughout the day tomorrow. i'll send it back over to you monica. >> thanks melissa. the oldest rivalry in college football comes to philadelphia this weekend. the army/navy game of course. many of the players are already in town and they took part in a pregame tradition.

>> we're going to redo your house. >> oh, my goodness. >> yeah, that was taylor o'malley's stunned reaction as the philadelphia flyers charity told her they would be remodeling their entire house. tara's daughter mattie has been battling b cell leukemia since march of 2015 and she just completed therapy. the flyers teamed up with building hope for kids in choosing the o'malley's for this year's home makeover which as you can see was very much appreciated. the phillies organization spread holiday cheer as well today. they served a traditional turkey dinner to about 200 people who are in need at bethesda project our brother's place in spring garden section. everyone got hearty portion of food and one on time with the phanatic. today's event is part of the phillies #season of giving. >> very nice. team coverage of the wintry weather headed our way is coming your way in the next half hour. >> meteorologist melissa magee will have an updated forecast as the snow starts to fall in cape may.

starting to fall. we're not expecting any accumulation right now because the main roads are just wet but this is a sign of what's to come as we go throughout the rest of tonight and throughout the day saturday. storm tracker6 live double scan radar 3-d showing that you snow starting to inch closer to our region but it's a wide area of snow that we are tracking as we pull out here, you can see the snow from louisiana and up through portions of new england already. so, as we look at that area, we've got winter storm warnings as far south as baton rouge louisiana and as far forth and east to past new england so we've got the warnings and the advisories posted. this is over a 1500-mile stretch of snow that we will be tracking. back here a little closer to home we've got that winter storm warning up for areas in south jersey, also into delaware but a winter weather advisory right along the immediate coast of coastal sections of new jersey so that's going to limit the snowfall we see there. and we've got that winter weather advisory for the i-95

metro area and the immediate suburbs to the north and west. as far as what we can expect and the impact scale with the snow we're tracking tomorrow, from 6:00 a.m. on, we've got a low to moderate concern but the height of that snow really moves in between 9:00 a.m. and 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and then it will slowly start to taper as we get into 4 o'clock tomorrow right through the early evening hours. we've got more details on that and we'll go over those snowfall totals in a little bit. i'll send it back to you monica. >> thank you melissa. many folks flock to supermarkets and hardware stores to get ready. swept "action news" reporter jeff chirico out today to see if that was the case for this first snowfall of the season. he's live in lafayette hill. hey, jeff. >> reporter: hey, good afternoon monica. especially that first snowfall of the year definitely brings folks here to hardware stores like true value in lafayette hills many to replace that busted shovel or snowplough even though we're only expected a few inches driving

of interest in a fatal hit-and-run in croydon earlier this week. >> police are warning the public to be on the lookout for pair of gunman who tried to rob two men in southwest philadelphia. surveillance video shows the 22-year-old and 25-year-old victims sitting here in the 4900 block of greenway avenue at 11:00 monday night. now take a look. a few minutes later the suspect approached the man and tried to rob them but then the would be target saw guns and took off running though the gunman did not get away with anything police still want them off the streets of course. if you recognize either suspect please contact southwest detectives. s.w.a.t. officers and homeland security joined philadelphia police in responding to a frankford school threat this morning. that after a woman called officers saying she was en route to first philly charter school to shoot it up. the principal quickly put that school on lockdown. the all-clear was given about an hour later. police remained on the scene until students were dismissed today at noon. investigators have not said yet if they know who made the call or if she will face

might seem like if you're traveling out it is crowded on the roads. it is crowded. a lot of folks are ta here's a live look for you around the betsy ross bridge. if you're traveling southbound or northbound it's slow but if you take a look at your travel time between the vine and the southbound it's d. n the yellow not the red an the worst is on the southbound side about 22 minutes between woodhaven to the vine so if maybe you're traveling to the concert at the wells fargo center now would be good time to do so because it's not too bad on 95 as yet. the roosevelt boulevard is going to be crowded. if you're making your way into the northeast taking the northbound side of the roosevelt boulevard up and over these twin bridges it's going to be slow from 76 approaching broad street southbound is heavy from fox street approaching 76. but i'll show you your travel times cause i'm sure you want to know how long it's going to take you on the roads. 95 we already showed you that about 22 minutes right now but on the schuylkill look at that both directions eastbound about 33 minutes between the blue route and the vine,

>> ♪ >> melissa is in for adam and she has busy job of talking about snow. >> it looks pretty in south jersey doesn't it? it's going to be a nice day to watch the snowfall. it's falling on a weekend but there will be some spots that pick up some my snowfall accumulation. we'll show you what's going on outside. sky6 live in hd where down the shore in cape may we're losing some of the daylight right now but if you look closely you can still see those flakes falling from the sky. the roads are mainly wet but we will track some areas of slushy accumulation as we go throughout the rest of the overnight hours and throughout the day on saturday. so we've got our snowman and do you want to build a snowman tomorrow? we've got just the thing for you and it won't cost you a thing. we'll talk about the weather ingredients and what you can track with saturday's snow. temperatures tomorrow will be near freezing so we're calling for a heavy wet snow. perfect for building a snowman or some snowballs but it will be hard to shovel, so that is something that you do want to

watch out for especially for areas south and east of philadelphia. we'll show you what's going on with storm tracker6 live double scan radar. you could see the snow moving across areas in south jersey. we'll go in a little tighter on street level with storm tracker six. you can see some pockets of that snow for cape may, pressing into sea isle city in between the garden state parkway from atlantic city and sea isle city we have that snow that will continue to fall and this will fill in from the southeast to northwest direction as we go throughout the rest of tonight and throughout the day on saturday. rain cooled air right now or snow cooled air i should say there in cape may coming in at 35. 38 in philadelphia, 36 for trenton and beach haven. 26 degrees in the poconos. 34 for allentown and reading. 35 degrees out to the west there in lancaster. here is satellite6 along with action radar. what we're tracking is a frontal boundary, the same front that came through earlier this week has moved offshore. you can see that -- where that front is, we will be watching

an area of low pressure that's going to develop along that front and that will enhance some of that snowfall across our region. so future tracker6 showing you later tonight 11:00 p.m. we've got that snow there in south jersey, also into delaware. as we get into day break tomorrow that snow filling in along the i-95 metro area and it's yet to move into our northwest suburbs until we get into the mid morning hours and right through the afternoon. but you notice by 1 o'clock, we're starting to find some mixing that will take place right across extreme coastal sections of new jersey. so that will put a cap on some of the snowfall we see across those locations but 8 o'clock tomorrow evening, the snow will start to taper from a west-east direction with just some leftover and lingering snow showers as we get into saturday night. so, expected snowfall just one to 2 inches for the poconos down to lancaster but for the heart of our region, two to 4-inches for philadelphia and the i-95 met area. four to 8-inches across interior sections of south jersey so for lakehurst down into hammonton bridgeton, millville even down into

dover, delaware, but then again two to 4 inches where we have that winter weather advisory right across extreme coastal sections of new jersey and again that mixing is going to take place there. so, we'll talk about what we can expect and why we've issued that accuweather alert. it's the first snowfall of the season but some of the roads will be hard to travel on so slow travel especially along i-95 core done points to the south and east. it's going to reduce your visibility with snow coming down. slushy main roads and the secondary roads look to be snowy. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast showing you it's snowy and cold tomorrow a high temperature up to 34. and in the wake of that on sunday wind chills in the 20's even though the air temperature is saying 39. on monday we'll dry out partly sunny a high temperature up to 41. rain and snow showers as we get into tuesday, a high up to 42. then in the wake of that front, an arctic blast moves in by wednesday, a high of just 30. 35 on thursday and next friday, maybe more rain and snow that we're tracking with

>> that's right. friday night, the big story on "action news" is an accuweather alert. the first snow of our season and while we're not expecting a lot this time around road crews are still preparing in the region. >> luckily the timing is also on our side with the storm hitting overnight into the first part of the weekend. but as you can see snow has already started falling in llewes delaware and areas to our south. >> of course when there is snow in the forecast that means time to hit the grocery and hardware stores for the must have items bread and milk for breakfast salt for your sidewalk always good thing to have on hand. >> let's take a look at conditions right now in cape may new jersey through our sky6 camera. a light dusting, a few flakes here and there but the snow definitely starting to fall tonight. all right, we have live team coverage this evening. chad pradelli is live at the penndot salt yard in norristown. reporter trish hartman is at the public work yards in hammonton. cecily tynan is at the "action news" big board with the

latest. >> this will be a significant snow for parts of our viewing area. on double scan live you can see kind of a conveyor belt of moisture and the northwest edge you've got the white. that's the snow. it's snowing from parts of south jersey all the way down to louisiana, near houston they got up to 5-inches of snow, even thundersnow and you'll notice that the radar is beginning to fill in. it isn't all reaching the ground but it has been snowing for about the past two hours in cape may and my good friend chris sowers is there and he sent this photo along. you can see it's already starting to accumulate on park benches and this is just the leading edge of the snow. the storm system will be intensifying as it moves in. winter storm warnings in effect for central delaware and south jersey. this is where i'll expect the highest accumulation. we do havr advisories in the fact for new castle for philadelphia all areas north and west and right along the immediate shore line with that ocean temperature of
