latest. >> this will be a significant snow for parts of our viewing area. on double scan live you can see kind of a conveyor belt of moisture and the northwest edge you've got the white. that's the snow. it's snowing from parts of south jersey all the way down to louisiana, near houston they got up to 5-inches of snow, even thundersnow and you'll notice that the radar is beginning to fill in. it isn't all reaching the ground but it has been snowing for about the past two hours in cape may and my good friend chris sowers is there and he sent this photo along. you can see it's already starting to accumulate on park benches and this is just the leading edge of the snow. the storm system will be intensifying as it moves in. winter storm warnings in effect for central delaware and south jersey. this is where i'll expect the highest accumulation. we do havr advisories in the fact for new castle for philadelphia all areas north and west and right along the immediate shore line with that ocean temperature of

49 degrees, there will likely be some mixing in the afternoon along the coast. but for most of us, this is a snowstorm, all snow during the day except for immediately along the jersey shore and the delaware beaches. so, we continue our accuweather alert for tomorrow. that snow continues pushing in tonight from the southeast to the northwest. steadiest the heart of the day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. highest totals southeast. do be careful tomorrow. the roads will be slushy and slick and could get icy tomorrow night. i'll talk about that in the seven-day forecast. monica. >> all right, thank you cecily. now let's head to chad pradelli live in norristown tonight. chad how is penndot handling this first snowfall. >> reporter: right now little bit quiet here at this penndot yard but about 45 minutes ago penn its operations that will happen going into the overnight hours. they say they are ready. they're in await and see approach at this timg at the forecast very asr thisy. afternoon drone6 was flying around those trucks

were loading up some of the salt supplies getting ready for those overnight hours when the flakes begin to fall. earlier today, in the early morning hours, the trucks were out in force and the major arteries here in the delaware valley they were applying brine to the roads. officials say when the flakes begin to fall they'll be out in force. >> right now we're prepared to deploy 250 trucks. that's our game plan going into this. we'll continue to monitor the forecast tonight and if things change and things go worse we have the ability to bring in another 182 trucks. >> reporter: and penndot officials say they are fortunate because this storm is beginning in the overnight hours. there will not be a lot of traffic. it is a weekend. that said, they say there are some concerns with the army/navy game. there could be some traffic with that. anyone who is going to be traveling the roadways tomorrow penndot wants you to take a look at their communications digital device,

forecast since wednesday. we are brining the expressway and 42 today. we have crews coming in for salt standby crews tonight. >> reporter: the scene was similar in northfield, new jersey. atlantic county supervising engineer of highways and bridges says they have about 450 miles of roads to cover. 70 employees including drivers and mechanics will be on duty. >> we're going through our final check down of our trucks so as you can see in the back we're also preparing them to lug, we'll store them in warmer temperatures through the night so it's ready to go. >> reporter: downtown ocean city is looking festive and will probably look even more so with a coating of snow. city officials say public works crews are ready for it. >> they'll be starting in the wee hours this morning and continue through saturday. we have extra crews coming in so, you know, hopefully we'll be able to clear the streets and it will be a minor event and everyone will be downtown shopping and enjoying the christmas season. >> reporter: now, officials do say if you see any brining or salt vehicles on the roads,

shin. he was taken to the hospital and later released. the woman suffered serious injuries. we'll have much more on this story coming up tonight on "action "action news" at 6:00. a flying piece of debris hit an suv on the pennsylvania turnpike and killed the driver this morning. state police say 57-year-old gregory leiber from langhorne died on the scene in whitemarsh township. investigators say something flew off of a truck traveling in the westbound lanes, went over the median and hit leiber's lincoln suv. troopers are still trying to identify the truck responsible if you know anything about the crash, which happened at 10:30 this morning, you're asked to call pennsylvania state police. >> police searching for the man responsible for hitting a 59-year-old man in the face with a two by four in south philadelphia. surveillance video shows the suspect entering a parking lot here in the 1000 block of snyder avenue at 2:30 in the afternoon october 25th. now, take a look. minutes later police say that man got into an argument with the victim pulled a piece of wood from the back of his

nissan frontier and literally hits the victim with the two by four. if you recognize this man, you are asked to contact police. a fire in the wissinoming section of philadelphia spread from one home to another that broke out in the 6400 block of marsden street at 4:30 this morning. firefighters think a hoarding situation could partially be to blame. they were still able to get it under control in 15 minutes. no one was injured. >> well, plans are moving forward to relocate two new jersey state office buildings despite objections from residents. the project in question is a $250 million deal for new offices for the state's health agriculture and taxation departments. opponents had wanted the project stalled until the new governor takes over in january but yesterday the statehouse commission voted to move forward. governor christie says once the current are torn down, private development will build on that space. >> all right, time right now for a check of the "action news" traffic report friday night. >> gina gannon is in for matt

pelman in the "action news" traffic center with the very latest. >> hi guys. i thought for a friday in rush hour things would be a lot worse than they are so good thas good news. northbound side of 95 i took a look at your travel time and it's only 18 minutes right now between the vine out to woodhaven road so that is some great news. southbound though just a bit sluggish. noing too major there. the wells fargo center tonight at 8:00 p.m. andrea bocceli is in town. that concert could slow things down a bit. while we're seeing slow speeds like on the eastbound side of the schuylkill that's crowded. the vine is crowded and i want to show you the vine. we had an earlier accident. it was out here partially blocking this right lane on the westbound side of the vine. it has since cleared. we're still sluggish from broad street up through this point. but this eastbound side has really been holding on. we really haven't seen that big of a delay on that eastbound side so from eighth street to 95 expect that -- eastbound side of the vine to

"undermines and essentially disqualifies its leadership role to seek peace in the region." we have new details about yesterday's deadly school shooting in new mexico. the fbi is revealing it interviewed that gunman last year about comments that he made online. the 21-year-old who opened fire killing two students got in the school by disguising himself as a student. fbi officials say they told -- he told them at the time he had no plans for an attack. the san juan county sheriff said the gunman left a messag saying that work school and his life were bad and that he wanted out. that suspect killed himself. >> ♪ >> health check tonight. some local students with special needs received new customized accessories today that could help make their lives a bit easier. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman was at that assembly. she joins us from the big board with more. >> hi ali. >> it was a really fun assembly. for students with and disabilities medical devices can be very expensive and are

not always tailored or designed just for the child. so a new project is helping to bridge the gap and get kids exactly what they need. dozens of students at hms school for children with cerebral palsy got new accessories. all designed to help increase participation in learning and life. russell goldstein with the institute on disabilities at temple university says the project provides custom cardboard adaptations. >> we try and include the end user in the entire design process, that is a huge piece of this. >> reporter: the kids here work directly with occupational therapy and architecture students from temple. >> s this one slides on. >> reporter: in joshua's they as therapist what he needed. they decided on a more light weight tray that was closer to his body. >> because with his other tray, his -- the cutout, this is the cutout was a little

further from his body so what tends to happen is his arm slips in here. >> reporter: goldstein says art students also helped allowing the kids to choose their own designs. >> josh wanted the planes; is that right. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> reporter: hms teacher theresa gardenia says the pieces help keep kids communicating active and engaged. >> to be able to use my device and get down. [applause] >> reporter: and because they're cardboard they're portable can be made quickly and without a lot of expense. >> incredibly important because a lot of children we serve to date are inundated with different expenses for all of the other equipment that they may be getting. >> reporter: and although the cardboard is light it's also thick and durable. the project was initially funded by the christopher and dana reef foundation. goldstein says they're turning night a nonprofit so they can expand the program to help

more people. rick, i should say that both the temple students and the hms students enjoyed the collaboration. >> all right, everyone was a winner. thank you ali. a panel gathered today in trenton to discuss the government's role in the opioid epidemic. the discussion was focusing on recovery at first and support strategies for those leaving rehab. panelists included mental health providers addiction and recovery professionals and law enforcement.

>> in cumberland county state and local officials along with community leaders pledged their compliment to ending homelessness in area by the year 2020. this was a news conference today here in bridgeton. organizers of the event say it's been an ongoing effort to help the homeless with many agencies taking part including the nonprofit organization called m25 initiative which has placed 20 homeless residents in permanent housing so far and the work continues to place even more. it was also remembrance ceremony for a homeless man joseph hand shaw who died tragically in 2013 after being trapped in a salvation army donation box while searching for a warm place to sleep. >> atlantic city's move towards a greener future got under way today. "action news" in front of new york avenue elementary school as mayor don guardian and officials kicked off a project to replace all the street lights with high energy

efficient led technology. state and federal funds will pay for it. once completely more than 5600 street lights will provide better views at a lower cost. penndot has completed work on three new bicycle lanes on suburban highways in the philadelphia area. the new lanes are located along business u.s. 30 in coatesville chester county along route 320 in springfield township delaware county and along route 653 in pottstown montgomery county. see the bicyclists there enjoying it. the transformation began in october. it cost an estimated $127,000.

afternoon. it is going to take awhile to actually move inland farther around philadelphia, probably around day break tomorrow but storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we do have that snow that's reaching the ground really from atlantic city through cape may, also in parts of central delaware and these are the roads affected, route 47, highway one in delaware and also it is snowing across the garden state parkway and this is just the leading edge of the system that has been bringing some heavy snow to parts of the deep south. hasn't snowed in some areas across the deep south in a full decade and this system is heading our way. one ingredient we need is the cold air. it's in place. almost feels like snow out there. philadelphia 38 degrees, allentown 34, wilmington 37 and notice in cape may where it's already snowing the temperature has dropped down to 35 degrees. atlantic city airport 36 with snow. that ocean temperature 49 degrees and that likely will create some mixing along the coast. the immediate shore line

tomorrow afternoon. but satellite and radar showing this system, there's plenty of moisture that's streaming up from the south and this is going to be an allday event tomorrow so future tracker showing 11 o'clock tonight, this line really doesn't move very far inland but it's still snowing atlantic city right close to millville, wildwood and dover but by day break tomorrow, philadelphia, 7 o'clock in the morning, it's snowing and it continues to push up to the northwest. by 1 o'clock, actually some bands of some heavier snow, even in the poconos it's snowing and then gradually things will be tapering off as we head into tomorrow evening. 5 o'clock, some end of the snow west of reading, west of lancaster and then by about 10:30 it's all moving out. so, as far as the snowfall amounts, it's kind of an upside down storm where areas that typically get the most snow, the poconos, the lehigh valley, berks county you're getting the least, one to two slushy inches along the i-95 corridor including philadelphia, two to four but the jackpot zone will be the immediate coastline. let's head back to that

graphic. four to 8-inches across interior south jersey and central delaware and along the coast where you get a little bit of that mixing, a little bit less, two to four but this is going to be a significant snow for parts of south jersey and delaware. so, with the higher snow amounts, the road impacts also will be higher. the main highways that are treated just moderate but overpasses secondary roads and sidewalks, the impact will be high. it's a good thing this is on a saturday. you can kind of hunker down and stay home. the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it's snowing all day cold, the high only 34. sunday the high 39. wind chills in the 20's. monday partly sunny, 41. tuesday a rain or snow shower as we begin hanukkah 42. behind it the high on wednesday, only 30 and we do have the potential for more snow next friday. i'll talk about that in the seven-day forecast, guys. gets you in the holiday spirit. >> absolute. >> i'm working sunday night for walter so you guys are welcome to join me. >> we will. >> you'll do a great job. >> it will never come.

>> "action news" continue with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪ >> hello again. here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. the season's first snowfall set to arrive tomorrow and it could bring up to 6-inches in some places. the latest accuweather forecast for you coming up. there are now six major wildfires burning in southern california, more than 100,000 acres have burned. tens of thousands of people already evacuated. we're live at the scene with the latest on that. plus, the first lady reveals the surprising location where she would like to spend the holidays if she could and it is far away from the united states.

>> ♪ >> and now the details. we have an accuweather alert tonight because we're about to get our first taste of old man winter with a snowfall that could bring anywhere from one to 6-inches depending on where you are. preparations are already under way in much of the region as the penndot command center crews are closely monitoring the conditions and the forecast. and of course so is meteorologist melissa magee who is standing by with our first check of that accuweather forecast tonight. hey, melissa. >> hi rick. we'll be tracking the snow throughout the day tomorrow. here's a pictureout side. sky6 live in had. d down the shore in cape may if you look at the light and then look at the snow coming down with the light reflecting that snow you can see it is starting to accumulate on some of the grassy surfaces. but the roads are mainly wet. so, the snow is falling in south jersey. it's going to fill in as we go throughout the rest of tonight. here's storm tracker6 live double scan radar 3-d. we've got the snow stretched out across the midatlantic region. eventually an area of low pressure will form just off the coast and with the

northern fringe of that system coming into our area we're starting to find that snow fill in across our region as well. we'll widen out the picture because it is a large area of snow we're tracking from the midatlantic down across areas in the southeast where louisiana is dealing with snow at this hour. so, winter weather alerts posting into the weekend and we're calling for about a 1500-mile stretch where you have watches and warnings posted down across the deep south and even for areas in new england and a little closer to home, we are underneath a winter storm warning for areas in south jersey and a winter weather advisory for philadelphia and points to the north and west but the immediate coastline of south jersey, you could see is still underneath a winter weather advisory where you have that purple shading there. that's where we do anticipate mixing that will take place. as far as the impacts tomorrow, 6:00 a.m. low to moderate but the height of this storm moves in at 9:00 a.m. lasting right through 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and it will slowly taper from a west-east direction. we'll take a closer look at

this and talk about snow totals coming up in the accuweather forecast. back to you monica. >> sounds good. thanks melissa. snow has fallen in other parts of the country in the last 24 hours. including places that normally don't see much accumulation like college station, texas, just north of houston. they got a big bunch and in san antonio nearly 3-inches of snow fell. that's the most there in decades. upstate new york where we are more used a winter-like effect a lake effect snow fell in orchard park. here it is near buffalo. some areas near lake erie there's already up to 18-inches on the ground. keep up with changes to our wintry forecast on your phone or tablet. the 6abc app is free download for your mobile device. >> in other news tonight an hours long standoff ended late last evening with two people in custody including a man suspected of a deadly hit-and-run. the standoff forced the lockdown of a nearby school. "action news" reporter bob brooks spoke to parents and students today about that

frightening incident. >> reporter: things were set up to hopefully be normal. yesterday that was a much different case. the school was placed on lockdown well into the evening. just yards away in the 400 block of pond street police say they were in a standoff with suspect 32-year-old nicholas napoli. they tried to call him out breaking down the door. napoli would eventually be captured and arrested. >> i was at work. my hands were tied. i was scared to death for them. >> reporter: that's kristen. her kids go to the school. to think they were so close to the situation was a little too much but she says the school did a great job with notifications and safety. >> it was scary. >> reporter: schools did a great job i hear. >> they did. they let everybody know what was going on. >> reporter: kids say it wasn't too bad staying late. >> i was taking a nap. >> reporter: taking a nap. >> i was tired. >> they brought in chocolate milk water and cookies. >> reporter: many parents

share the same feeling. >> it was scary. >> reporter: schools did a good job. >> definitely. i was happy that they were depth safe. >> reporter: police say napoli was wanted for violating a state parole sentence but he's also considered a person of interest in the fatal hit-and-run in croydon that happened this past monday. police say that's when a man was hit and killed by this driver of this white ford focus on state road. the driver would escape through the swamp next to the road. now napoli's governor girlfriend was taken by police. the good news no one was hurt at the scene while this was going down. reporting in bristol bob brooks channel6 "action news." >> ♪ >> developing news from southern california where several large wildfires continue to burn tonight. the damage is staggering. more than 100,000 acres burned, tens of thousands of residents alread forced to flee their homes. abc's marci gonzalez live with the very latest. marci. >> reporter: monica, firefighterhere in los angeles county made a lot of

progress. in fact most of the evacuation orders here have been listed but those fires to our north and to ourre still extremely dangerous and growing. neighborhoods lit up for the holidays ravaged by flames as the lie lack fire in san diego county scorching 4,000 acres in fewer than 12 hours spreads. >> the fire was coming right at us. >> you could feel the heat from the fire. >> reporter: 10,000 residents evacuated, at least four people injured while trying to escape. in this fire alone, 85 homes and other buildings damaged or destroyed. crews racing to save others. catching a family inside this house off guard. all six wildfires burning in southern california are fueled by strong santa ana winds. >> the wind was so strong. strongest i've ever seen it. >> reporter: those double digit gusts carrying smoldering embers making the flames difficult to contain. >> there's no stopping it.

whenever it hits the east coast there's no stopping it the way the santa ana winds come in there's no stopping them. >> reporter: the two fires in los angeles county now between 30 and 40 percent contained. the damage left behind is overwhelming. >> not out of the woods just yet. >> no,no, absolutely not. we need to get out there and make sure all of the hot spots are taken care of and until every hot spot is out we won't be completely out of the woods. >> reporter: and in ventura county the largest of the fires growing even more. flames destroying more than 400 structures across 132,000 charred acres threatening communities all the way to the coast. and while it is still breezy today, the wind is far less powerful than it was yesterday so that could be a very big help for firefighters. the wind warnings will stay in effect through the weekend. partly sunny gonzalez channel6 "action news".

>> trent franks announced he'll step down immediately instead of at the end of january. franks issued a statement saying his wife was admitted to the hospital last night and that led to today's decision. the arizona republican is accused of asking two former aides to bear his child as surrogate mothers. franks says his wife was hospitalized because of "an ongoing ailment." >> president trump signed a bill today to keep the government funded and opened until december 22nd. the bill gives lawmakers some breathing room to negotiate a longer term solution. this evening the president heads to pensacola florida for a rally there. pensacola is just a few miles from the alabama state line where controversial candidate roy moore is vying for a senate seat. earlier today the president sent tweet expressing his support for moore. more faces a slew of accusations of sexual misconduct involving young girls. first lady melania trump is getting into the holiday spirit last night with a visit to a children's hospital in washington, d.c.

mrs. trump read the christmas classic polar express to the youngsters. one of the children asked her where she'd spend the holidays if she could spend them anywhere in the world and this was her response. >> i would spend my holidays on deserted island, tropical island with my family. >> families of fallen service members honored today way memorial at a cemetery in bucks county. the monument dedicated to gold star families was unveiled today at washington crossing national cemetery in newtown. there was also a ceremonial groundbreaking at the very spot where that monument will be installed later. their efforts to erect the same monument at national cemeteries all across the country. >> a week focusing on computer science education coming to a close across the school district in philadelphia. students at robert moore school proudly showed off their coding skills. they used what they learned to program these robots. some 14,000 students have participated in coding activities this week. >> cool. a familiar face came to give the eagles a little pep talk of sorts. >> yes, someone with local ties, too. the eagles know the magnitude

this is the first time snow has fallen baton rouge in more than seven years. wow. >> kind of frozen. >> yeah. >> talk about our snowfall which is having some big impacts already. >> you're not kitten. sorry. >> we're going to be bundled up later on tonight guys even as we get into saturday because we're already finding those snow showers falling to our south. we'll show you the picture outside as we walk to the weather center. we are looking at a picture from cape may, new jersey, taken from our very own chris sowers. you can see the christmas tree and also you can see the snow there on the grasso we are going to find some snowfall accumulation on the grassy surfaces and also on some of those secondary roads south and east of philadelphia. so, that's something to watch out for as we go throughout the rest of our weekend, at least for the first half on saturday. so, do you want to build a snowman? that is the question. and we've got the answer and we've got the ingredients for finding and building the perfect snowman. with the snow we're tracking tomorrow, temperatures will be near freezing so we're calling

satellite6 and academics radar showing the snow showers starting to fill in across the midatlantic region but a wide area of snow and even some mixed precipitation. the frontal boundary just off shore so we'll be tracking an area of low pressure riding up along the front and that will help to enhance the snowfall across our area tomorrow. we'll time it out for you. future tracker6 showing you later tonight 11:00 p.m. we've got the snow showers still in south jersey and also into delaware. it's slowly making that progress to the north and west as we go throughout the day but by day break tomorrow, 7:00 a.m., starting to fill in along the i-95 corridor. and interior sections of south jersey. 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon starting to fill in for the heart of our region. to the south and east across coastal sections of new jersey we're starting to find that mixing line take place from lakehurst down to atlantic city and wildwood. that's where we actually have a winter weather advisory posted so we are anticipating some mixing taking place right along the immediate coast. by 8 o'clock tomorrow evening, you notice we do have the snow showers tapering from a

west-east direction. so expected snowfall across the region, one to 2 inches for the poconos down to lancaster. for the heart of our area for the i-95 metro corridor, two to 4 inches of snowfall. same they same thing for philadelphia but four to 8-inches of snow for williamstown, hammonton, over into bridgeton, millville, up into lakehurst and chatsworth as well but two to 4 inches of snow for atlantic city and where you'll find some mixing with that storm. so, slow travel expected tomorrow with that accuweather alert especially for the i-95 metro area. reduced visibility, slushy main roads is a concern and snowy secondary roads as well. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast showing you we're in and out of the snow for most of the day, a high at 34. on sunday, wind chills in the 20's with a high temperature of 39. on monday, partly sunny, we're up to 41 for a high. hanukkah begins at sundown on tuesday. rain and snow shower possible and at 42. much colder behind that an arctic blast wednesday, 30.

tynan to find out what we can expect. cecily. >> and jim, we can expect a lot of this, especially in south jersey and delaware. we are live on sky6 taking a look at cape may. the snow has been falling there since about 3 o'clock this afternoon and notice it is accumulating on the grass right now. at this point the roads are just wet but that will be changing because this system has plenty of moisture. storm tracker6 live double scan showing it looks like it's snowing in philadelphia right now. this is verga. s are not reaching the ground. there's plenty of moisture with this. as we zoom out you can see it's almost a conveyor belt of moisture. the snow extends from south jersey right now cape may county, all the way into new orleans. areas near houston, as much as 5-inches of snow and this storm is going to be a little bit closer to the coast than earlier anticipated during the week. so, what this means is we're getting a pretty good thump of snow in south jersey and delaware. this is where we have the winter storm warnings in
