but you are australian. where did you grow up? >> on the gulf coast but the hinterland part of gulf coast. >> chris: the hinterland? [ laughter ] >> that means -- i grew up on property, there's fields and -- >> chris: i've been to -- i don't support like -- like i hate the stereotype. like everyone thinks oh, you're from australia, there's creepy, crawly, poisonous, venomous things all over the place. but are there creepy, crawly, poisonous, venomous things all over the place? [ laughter ] >> kind of. not something you concentrate on growing up. but yeah. there's tons of poison -- i think there's a large percentage of the poisonous snakes in the world reside in australia, and spiders and sharks. >> chris: there's sharks and poisonous spiders and snakes. a lot of dangerous creatures growing up -- >> but it's fine. when you live there you don't worry about it or think about it. they're there but didn't seem like a big deal. >> chris: ten of your closest friends growing up, how many of them were killed by poisonous spiders?

[ laughter ] seven? >> no, i mean, i grew up on property and i don't even know someone -- i had snakes literally in my house growing up. >> chris: what? >> no, on purpose. they would get into the house or whatever. >> chris: what would be the biggest snake? >> like a carpet python. if they've got like a gold pattern on their back, they're a carpet python and they're fine. sometimes if they're little, often they're probably more poisonous. so you get them out with a stick instead of picking them up. >> chris: a stick? >> yeah. >> jimmy: you keep a stick, a poisonous snake removing stick? >> this one time, my mom came -- i was in my bratty teen years, and my mom came in and says, can you help me get the snake out of the house. i was like, mom, i'm really busy on msn, like no. and she was like, it's a big one, though. can you? i was like, so busy, mom, no. then she went away and ten minutes later i was like,

where's mom? [ laughter ] >> chris: oh, no. >> that's when my mom got eaten. no, she didn't. [ laughter ] >> chris: oh, my god. terrified. >> after a while, she hasn't co back in the house. i went down and she's on the driveway. and this python was huge. it wrapped its way -- she tried to carry it out. it wrapped its way around her arm and trying to strangle her around her neck. and she was trying to call out to me. she was like, rrr! rrr! i saw her and i knew from that point on, next time mom asks to get a snake out of the house, just do it. don't be a brat about it. >> chris: just remove the giant snake from your mom, use the stick method. >> other than like instances like that i felt little danger at all growing up in australia. >> so just completely shifting topics to a more james liptony type of question. if you could have lunch with any celebrity -- >> mm-hmm. >> chris: -- living or dead, would you take them to outback steakhouse? [ laughter ]

>> i actually have never eaten at an outback steakhouse. i'm ruining -- i shouldn't have said that. >> chris: i've heard they have outback steakhouses in australia. >> yeah, for sure. an ex-boyfriend of mine -- there's a challenge if you eat like a kilo of steak you get a free t-shirt. and a boyfriend of mine way back when tried to do the challenge but he was vomiting as he tried to keep eating it to win this t-shirt. he got there in the end. >> chris: he got the shirt? >> yeah. >> chris: dang. but he didn't get margot robbie. did he? peeling potatoes, then i was a dish pig, then i was a waitress. by 14 i was behind the bar. that was the fun part. >> chris: 14 behind the bar? is that legal in australia? >> no, it's not. [ laughter ] sometimes i would give someone a drink. they'd be like, two beers -- are you old enough to give me beer? i'm like, do you want the beer or not? they're like, well, yes. i got away with it. >> chris: that's nice. >> no, it's not legal. i don't think, so i wouldn't imagine. >> chris: what's in a rum and coke? >> that's a tough one. a lot of rum, a little bit of coke. >> chris: are you more like a beer person or a whiskey person? >> beer. definitely beer drinker. >> chris: i want some beer. can i get some beer? guillermo, can you bring us a couple beers? >> does that happen on the show? >> chris: it does tonight. [ cheers and applause ] so i'm curious about this because you made a movie about a real person, an infamous figure skater. i mean, she's tonya harding. what's that like? is she part of the process? is she there on set? did you meet her? how did that work? >> i met her. she wasn't a consultant on set. our writer did a series of interviews with her and then did a series of interviews with jeff gillooly and both their stories contradicted each other so much, he thought that was the best way

to tell this story, to have all these unreliable narrators with contradicting storylines and kind of let the audience decide for themselves how it happened. so i flew to meet her right before we started shooting. other than that, she wasn't on set or anything. but we showed her the movie right before we premiered at toronto, so yeah. >> chris: do you think she's watching this right now? >> i don't know. i didn't think about that. if you are, hi, tonya. >> chris: what's up, tonya harding? i like the movie, i thought it was really great. you nailed the character of tonya harding. that has to be difficult when meeting somebody but telling a story when there's so many conflicting perspectives how this story went down. the skating is off the chain. how long did you train with the skating? >> i did a lot of training. i did maybe four months of training, four or five months. it was like five days a week, three or four hours a day. it was a lot. >> c [ cheers and applause ] >> nothing, by the way, compared

to what an olympic-level ice skater does. >> chris: did you skate with tonya harding? >> i didn't. but when i met her, she was so lovely, she was more worried about me than i was about her. how are you doing with the skating? i was like, well, it's really, really hard, actually. she was like, do you need any tips? do you want me to help -- we can go to the ice skating rink now. do you have your skates with you? no, they didn't let me bring them on the plane. >> chris: you should have said that they were emotional support skates. >> i should have. i thought it was kind of vague. just from a room somewhere. >> maybe i thought i was being clever. but it's -- you know, rcaa is a historic studio in nashville where dolly parton, waylon jennings, elvis, all kinds of great musicians hatch recorded over the years. a lot of magic in that room. there was a time where we made the travel record where that room was in danger of being torn down and made into condos. things like that. when it got time to name this album, we were looking for an album title and i really wanted to pay tribute to that room where we made all three of these last records that we've made. from the historic rca studio "a" in nashville, tennessee. >> chris: that'sgreat. this is -- >> is this the -- >> chris: this is the tape cassette that you sent me. >> well, you had mentioned something about some of our music on one of your instagram posts.t it to me. i didn't know you were such a country music n. but then it turned out that you were going to have guardian of the galaxy 2 released and i had that record released on the same day. so i thought it would be cute to send you a little mix tape. i spent about 45 minutes on that label. [ laughter ] >> chris: then i got it and i was so moved. you have no idea. anyone who knows me knows that i love country music and i love really good country music. i love really good people. you do both of those real well. i got that album or i got that, i listened to the mix tape, i made an instagram post about it. we started hanging out. then you graciously invited me down to nashville where i was able to get up on stage with you and sing the last chorus of "tennessee whiskey."ú ongiven this honor.
