in wentz's absence. jaime apody is live at the novacare center "action news" reporter chad pradelli is at the linc. jamie, let's start with you. clearly nobody was shocked when doug pederson confirmed the diagnosis today. >> reporter: yeah, no, jim i think that we all feared the worst and just hoped the news would be otherwise but this injury is such a blow for the eagles and their fans for a couple of reasons. first, carson wentz was having such a spectacular season. it sure does put a damper on their super bowl aspirations. this is a really significant injury. takes six to nine months to rehab. the 2018 preseason is about eight months away. and so that's a little tight not to mention there's no guarantee that wentz will be the same quarterback. we can only hope. let's take a look at this scene last night. a sight that gave everyone a pit in their stomach carson wentz being carted to the team bus in a knee brace after the hit that end the his season. it did not end his night. he stayed in the game to throw
6:01 pm
his 33rd touchdown pass a few plays later setting an eagles franchise record. that proves just how tough this guy is. that is how carson wentz's season will end but it is not how it will end for his teammates who are still 11 and two, still headed to the playoffs with a chance to have home field advantage throughout. you can bet they'll be playing for carson and i asked doug pederson what his message is to all of us who understandably worry that without wentz the eagles super bowl chances are over. >> people thought our chances were -- were gone by the way side when jason peters went down, too, and when darren sproles goes down, you know. and all the guys i mentioned earlier and to the fans out there, they can't -- you can't lose faith i mean, this is -- this has been a resilient football team all season long and, you know, if there's -- if there's ever an opportunity for me as a head football coach to rally the troops now might be the time.
6:02 pm
>> reporter: talk about not losing faith. one "action news" viewer sent me a beautiful picture of the sunset over philadelphia tonight. it sure looked like an eagles spreading his wings over the city. i have that on my facebook page if you want to check it out. bring on saint nick. remember nick foles has done this before. he led the eagles to the playoffs back in 2013. he had 27 touchdowns and two interceptions that season. we'll hear from wentz -- we'll hear from foles coming up a little bit later in sports. live at the novacare complex jaime apody channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you jamie. so carson wentz will have to undergo surgery to repair the acl. the good news here, a full recovery is expected. and experts say wentz should return to a high level of play. >> can't remember the exact study to quote it but i believe 13 to 14 nfl quarterbacks in the more recent times that underwent acl reconstruction all returned to the same level of performance based on stats the season they returned. >> the surgery involves taking a tendon from elsewhere in the body, holes are drilled above and below the knee and that
6:03 pm
new tendon is threaded through and anchored by screws. in time, doctors say the replacement acl will actually be stronger than the original. wentz is likely to begin physical therapy soon after surgery. let's go live to the linc and "action news" reporter chad pradelli. chad, the eagles are hoping that the fan base rallies around nick foles just as the players will. what have you been hearing today? >> reporter: jim, this is a fan base that lost a little bit of its mojo. you know, there was a lot of confidence in this team with carson wentz at the helm but that confidence is now a bit shaky. when m.v.p. candidate carson wentz went down for the season, the eagles faithful went into a tail spin. >> honestly i felt like throwing up. i mean, it was like this is the year, i'm excited and i see there and my heart is broken. >> i was on the bandwagon. i was at super bottom of the beltway i was the bandwagon. >> reporter: felt like the team could win.
6:04 pm
>> i was ready to hop on that bandwagon and drive straight up to minnesota oh, yeah. >> reporter: it feels the collective mood is the eagles can still win but don't bet the ranch unless you're frank from south philadelphia. he didn't have much faith in wentz in the first place. >> to me he's overrated, okay. he under throws passes overthrows the guys. >> reporter: you're not worried about this. >> no, i'm not. i think foles can do the job. >> reporter: nick foles is once again the man leading the birds attack. he has had success even a pro bowl bid. heck, in one season he threw 27 touchdowns in and just two interceptions. >> foles would have been more laid back kind of california cool compared to north dakota but got a little momentum right now. >> reporter: momentum only goes so far. number 11 had some fans booking hotel rooms in minnesota for the super bowl. now those fans are looking to unload. >> getting into the playoffs deep i think is going to be probably a little bit of a challenge. >> reporter: and some fans
