dealing with that snow that developed late morning into the early afternoon right over the heart of philadelphia wilmington points to the north and west and now spreading to the south and east. we're starting to see our first flakes in cape may county. the last to see some of these flakes. to the north and west a bit of a hole in parts of bucks county but overall it is a steady snow here this afternoon everywhere here and this vantage point in south jersey the atlantic city expressway route 70, 49, the new jersey turnpike and again, not very heavy blinding snow but enough that, again, traffic is going very slow on all area roadways and that snow is accumulating even on the roads that were treated because the cars are going so slow that they can't really move or blow this very light snow around. so, it is allowed and able to accumulate and as we look to the north and west there's a little bit of purple parts of chester county montgomery county near coatesville and malvern with a boast of heavier snow. to the west of reading it's

starting to dry up and the edge is moving from the west a clearing line and that will continue to collapse in from the north and west here this evening. visibilities are down. half mile in philadelphia trenton because of that snow wilmington .3 miles. there you see wildwood 9 miles with much lighter snow down there. so, visibilities are a bit better but that is also going to deteriorate a little bit later this afternoon. temps are bitterly cold. 23 in allentown, 25 philadelphia. so it's a fluffy snow and again cold enough that it is sticking on all surfaces. so, this is a very quick hit of snow but a very bad timing here. it will clear the coast at 7 o'clock this evening. temps tonight going 19 to 24 degrees. so, roads are going to remain very slick even after the snow departs. we'll chart about the upcoming weekend and sharrie in fact we're talking 50's to melt the snow away somewhere in that seven-day forecast and brian we'll talk with i was little bit. >> adam thanks. we turn to john rawlins

live in westtown township chester county. >> you're along route 202 where traffic is pretty slow. >> reporter: slow going is the word. certainly not normal today. this is 202 behind me near side is that southbound, far side is northbound. in other words, near side folks going towards wilmington, the far side folks going toward king of prussia. if you take a look there we just drove from king of prussia. that's about 15 miles away. normally you can do that in 15, 20 minutes or so. it took us 40 to 45 minutes. the first snowflakes started falling about 1:00 p.m. at the time we were in king of prussia. while traffic was heavy along 202 near henderson road it was still moving easily then. we then journeyed south along 202 towards west chester. by 2 o'clock conditions had clearly changed. visibility dropped to poor and snow was no longer just accumulating on the ground but road surfaces as well though traction remained pretty good. traffic became very heavy near the malvern exit and while we can't say definitively it

seemed like many people from the 202 office parks in chester county were opting for an early dismissal and early rush hour. traffic varied. sometimes we could get up to 35 even 40 miles per hour. other times we were barely moving. we did spot snowplows working. in this case it's a plow train going north on 202 clearing the road of the accumulated snow and slush. so, a live picture now of traffic here on 202. slow going. it's really been the story of the day. but they're at least going on the main roads. live in westtown township, john rawlins channel6 "action news." back to you all. >> all right, john safe travels to you. it is time now for the "action news" traffic report as the snow snarls the start of evening rush hour. >> all right, let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. i guess more of the same across the area, matt. >> reporter: yeah, no one is expecting this to go well, right. i hope not. because we are going exceedingly slowly on all of the highways across-the-board this afternoon, brian and

sharrie, it really is a mess out there at the moment. let's start on 422. these are the eastbound lanes a spinout accident just east of the oaks interchange and you can see why. there is a decent amount of snow coverage in the main travel lanes of the highway. yeah, plows have not come through. we're kind of right on that verge of enough to plow or not quite enough to plow but we could at least use a salt truck here. vehicle spun out. we do have emergency crews on the scene. left lane blocked here on 422 eastbound. we had all lanes blocked along route one, the not so super highway in bucks county near route 13. that crash just cleared but you're stuck with single digit speeds and at this point those single digits are not really because of accidents, they're just because of people going really, really slowly on the awful road conditions. want to show you the big picture because i have not seen this much red on the big picture in quite a long time. we're looking at single digit speeds on most of the highways like the schuylkill, like the blue route. we've got accidents a plenty. there's one along lancaster of

a 30 at clover hill road one along merion road at waldron terrace. one cleared from 676 southbound but it is a mess. outside live in center city vine street expressway if you can see it is jam packed in both directions here by sixth street. we're getting reports of some traffic light troubles near city hall and the ben franklin parkway creating a mess in that area. delco, 95 just a snail's pace in both directions here. really is a slow, slow go to say the least on this friday afternoon. we'll check it again though, sharrie in just a bit. >> all right. at least it's friday. matt, thanks. keep up changes to the wintry forecast right on your phone or tablet. that includes realtime views from storm tracker6. the 6abc app is a free download for your mobile device. >> graphic details of a hazing ritual some of the findings of a grand jury report linked to a hazing death at penn penn pen.

the grand jury concluded the school's inaction allowed criminal acts to occur on years. a hazing ritual included excessive drinking. 26 fraternity brothers are facing criminal charges connected to his death. prosecutors also revealed recommended changes to help discourage that kind of behavior. >> sure the current -- cure the currently deficient hazing law. >> the panel also suggested penn state regulate drinking instead of leaving that responsibility to the fraternity counsel. the university says it's committed to promoting safety at all fraternities. the it banned back in march. >> one person was taken away in an ambulance shortly afternoon.

so far no word on the severity of the injuries or what caused the crash in the first place. >> now to a story you first saw right here on "action news" a woman in mayfair was caught stealing christmas decorations and police say this is not the first time she's done something like that. in fact they say it appears she has an affinity for all holiday decor. "action news" reporter katherine scott spoke to several victims in the neighborhood. >> took that big snowman. >> reporter: this mayfair neighborhood had been decked with christmas cheer but the ornaments were stripped and ended up right here. >> the right deer are directly across the street from my house. the red bows are from the lady. they went up with wire cutters and cut the bows off her railing. >> reporter: snowman polar bear. decorations snatched from his front lawn that he reclaimed and loaded up this morning and he wasn't alone. >> i was really disappointed. i was really losing faith in the neighborhood. >> i took the whole day to put

my decorations up and i came home and they were missing and i was really upset. the christmas spirit was lost. >> reporter: turns out police say one cents has been behind multiple thefts of holiday decoration on the street surrounding the 3100 block of brighton that left neighbors feeling deflated. >> it's a hard working neighborhood. everybody is taking care of their kids so this grinch is going to come in and steal? >> reporter: signs bows, garland galore out front. inside there's even more. police learned of a video posted on social media that shows the woman stealing the items. last night the woman's identity was confirmed by a neighbor. police were positioned outside her home overnight and executed a search warrant. as it got later neighbors and detectives were seen carrying out lanterns trees lights and lawn ornaments. >> she's a hoarder. it's all full of halloween stuff christmas stuff just stuff all over. >> she's going to be criminally charged.

fbi today as republicans expressed increasing skepticism about special counsel robert mueller. the president spoke to law enforcement officials at the fbi national academy's graduation today. but before he told that crowd that "the president of the united states has your back." he said this to reporters at the white house. >> it's a shame what's happened with the fbi but we're going rebuild the fbi. it will be bigger and better than ever. the level of anger at what they've been witnessing with respect to the fbi is certainly very sad. >> now mr. trump was referencing anti-trump text messages exchanged between two members of mueller's team. mr. mueller removed one of the agents after discovering those texts. the other was already off the team after a brief stint. >> today is the annual retail holiday known as free shipping day. nearly 1,000 online retailers will deliver any items ordered today for free with guaranteed arrival before christmas. the idea is to encourage last minute holiday shopping.

something is this little corner over here where you just see the ground now dusted in white with that fresh snowfall and in fact, snowing in most locations. we take a look at storm tracker6 live double scan here and as you take a wide view here, you could see bucks county kind of in a hole right now with a void in that snow cover. up towards the lehigh valley just a few flurries and this end -- it's ending in lancaster and reading and that clearing line of that snow will be progressing to the south and east over the next several hours but until then during the heart of the rush you can see some heavy snow near malvern in chester county and west chester with bright whites an little bit of purple in there t same thing near berlin glassboro down to salem route 49, 322 near glassboro and along 55 some steadier snow there as well and again here's that hit in parts of montgomery county, phoenixville you could see a little purple that did briefly pop up with some moderate snowfall along 422 there and also once you head east, the east side there of the

northeast extension it does dry up just a little bit with some lighter flurries in parts of montgomery county. and bucks county as well. as we take a look at this picture again, getting many pictures in, please share them with me on facebook instagram this is from your own karen rogers she's a passenger in this car in south jersey and you can see all those roadways covered by snow at at this point and very slick. winter weather advisories remain in effect until 9 o'clock for all areas along that pennsylvania turnpike straight down to the shore, southern parts of delaware where we're going to see most of that accumulating snow fall. temperatures are in the 20's so that's why every flake is sticking and these numbers are not going to come up all that much overnight tonight. satellite and radar 10 o'clock this morning, nothing was on the radar and then everything just blossomed as expected out of nowhere late morning into the afternoon and as you can see, everything is transferring to a coastal storm that is moving away at this point so again, future tracker by 6 o'clock it is

ending in the western suburbs. by 6:00, still snowing in most of south jersey and delaware but it will be off the coast quickly by 7 o'clock to 8 o'clock and will start to clear the sky out as well but at that time we'll already have one to 3 inches of fresh snow in the ground philadelphia trenton wilmington all points to the shore. a coating to an inch north and west of that advisory area up towards the lehigh valley. and then the winds are back tomorrow. they were calm today. breezy out of the west and that's going to keep feels-like temperatures near freezing all day tomorrow. your four day at 4:00 forecast as we head into the upcoming weekend 42 but again, drop that by at least 10 degrees because of the wind with sun and clouds. a lot of clouds on sunday, 40 degrees for a high temperature but mainly looks dry. milder, 47 monday but a lot of clouds still around but look at tuesday. some sunshine around with a few clouds and 12 degrees above average, 56, for a high but then we cool it back down. we'll talk about it and take another look at double scan live radar, guys, in the next

>> ♪ >> it's 4:30 and "action news" continues with an accuweather alert impacting almost anyone on the roads in the region. >> yeah, right now the combination of snow and rush hour traffic is making things at best slow going. at worst, dangerous. we've got team coverage today of the situation across the tri-state area. jeff chirico live in south jersey, matt pelman at the traffic center but let's get things started with meteorologist adam joseph at the "action news" big board with a look at when this system will move out of here adam. >> it will be moving out in the next hour or so in the western suburbs and a little bit longer to the south and east but this is one of those classic scenarios where very little makes a huge impact all because of timing with that evening rush hour. storm tracker6 live double scan shows that light to moderate snow basically falling across much of the viewing area. it is ending, though, and

drying up parts of lancaster county, berks county, lehigh valley, the poconos missing out in this fresh snowfall, but as we take a closer look here, really the heart of the delaware valley in and around philadelphia, chester county, delaware county, southern montgomery, bucks county and then over the river into camden gloucester and burlington county there's a wall of right with that steady snowfall accumulating on all surfaces and one thing i'm noting near coatesville and downingtown you can see it is starting to dry up just to the west there, so that's where it's starting to end and that will progress to the south and east here as we go through the next couple of hours. getting a lot of photos in. a beautiful shot here, again, great for the deer who are just grazing in this fresh snow. if you don't have to be out on the roadways and you are home and able to capture photos like this, like monica did in bucks county and share that on my facebook page it's really nice to see the beauty behind this. again, if you're in the behind the wheel or have to head out. snow totals so far ewing 1 inch, berwyn closing in on

2-inches, drexel hill about an inch and a half ambler an inch, bustleton section of the city 1 inch and here's the impacts with the timing, between 5:00 and 6:00 it's still going to remain on the high side but we'll start to improve things 7 o'clock on as that snow continues to move out to sea. we will that take a closer look with future tracker and the timing of that in your weekend call with the seven-day brian in just a little bit. >> if you're not stuck on the roads it's really actually kind of pretty out there. >> it really is. >> but a lot of people are stuck on the roads and we'll get visual evidence of that right now. mobile6 has lots of company right now. this is route 38 in cherry hill. i believe we just passed the cherry hill mall. it's really slow going out there. some of the roads are cleared but mostly by the traffic that's out there right now. road crews are doing their best to keep up but it is slow and it is slippery, so if you've got to be out, please be careful this evening. >> that's the view in cherry hill. let's get another check of our roads, matt pelman in the traffic center with the update. >> i've been sending out a few

tweets about what's going on on the roads this evening brian and sharrie. one of my friends on twitter just responded with all caps ouch which i think pretty accurately describes what your ride home is going to feel like. it is painful as you try and head home. single digit speeds in most spots. we've already had a number of spinout accidents. they're minor accidents, they clear pretty quickly but nonetheless they do snarl traffic after they happen. one happened right here along 422 eastbound past oaks. they got it cleared out but you can see we're still moving at a snail's pace in both directions and there is a decent amount of snow coverage on the road surface even in those main travel lanes here along 422. elsewhere in the western suburbs a wreck along the route one media bypass northbound near ridley creek park. that cleared out but still a ton of red on these major arteries. we don't usually see quite these many slow speeds. fire location whitpain township shutting down plymouth road. speeds in the teens on the pennsylvania turnpike. northeast extension's doing a little bit better as you head northbound because as you head

north, you're getting a little less snow, so 50 miles per hour there headed up towards lansdale. on the big picture nowhere near that. 6 miles per hour on the schuylkill, 9 miles per hour on 95. as we look at the vine, we're at a crawl in both directions and we're getting reports of traffic light troubles around the parkway near city hall so traffic is just snarled not only on the highways around center city but on the local streets as well. it's a night that it's tough to know where to send you as all the highways are snarled. moorestown mall in burlington county route 38 just a sea of red brake lights as far as you can see on the eastbound lanes of 38 and 42 in south jersey a snail's pace on the southbound side as well as you head down toward 55 and the a.c. expressway. we'll check it again, brian and sharrie, coming up in just a bit. >> all right my friend. see you shortly. thank you. as we've shown you in a number of ways this is making a mess of the evening commute which is a problem for drivers but [inaudible] this weather is just a really great way to kick off the weekend. cheer chirico live in oaklyn, new jersey. jeff, you've got the fun angle on this story. >> reporter: well, part of it at least. look behind me, there's no fun happening here. take a look at the traffic just lined up here on the white horse pike in oaklyn. a rush hour commute taking much longer than expected. if you're waiting for someone to come from here, you're going to be expecting them to arrive later than normal, but you're right, brian, while some are sitting perhaps frustrated in this traffic this storm is putting others in the spirit. as the flakes began to fall some danced for joy while others crawled along snow covered roads. for this guy, there was the normal drill of salting the walkway at the wawa in oaklyn. john gilliam stopped to fill his tank in case his ride took longer than expected. >> it's slippery. it's definitely slippery. like i said admiral wilson is not that great. this is pretty good, though, the pike, so -- but you got to be careful. >> reporter: by 3:00 p.m. the snow started accumulating

on sidewalks and streets. some left work early but got tied up in slow moving traffic making it tougher for plows working to clear roads. >> perfect day. >> reporter: you like this kind of weather? >> yes, for christmas. >> reporter: the third snowfall in a week put some in the christmas spirit. at tread's trees in westmont, the falling flakes added an ambience you just can't buy. >> i'm looking for a fraser fir under $30. what do you got. [laughter] >> with or without snowflakes on the branches. >> i would prefer snowflakes and if they could stay, that would be great. >> reporter: well, snow looks beautiful on trees but not as beautiful as slush on the road. that's what we're dealing with this friday afternoon rush hour. camden county says they have all hundred trucks out trying to clear roads throughout the county, of course some borough and township trucks also coming by here occasionally, but so far right now we have about an inch here but we are expecting more.

captured this scene tells "action news" that her neighbor asked if she could check her cameras to see if a box was delivered to his home yesterday. that's when she saw a sanitation worker pick up the package, place it in a recycling bin and then dump it into the truck. moment later the woman appears to grab the box out of the back before it was crushed. the philadelphia streets department has apologized and turned his video over to police. we'll have the latest on their investigation and hear from the neighbor who's box was stolen here coming up on "action news" at 5:00 tonight. >> also at 5:00 a car chase through the streets of one bustling maryland city ends in dramatic fashion. today. it was part of an inspection required by the u.s. navy. 175 cadets performed a variety of marches and even a rifle drill. these students are in the naval junior reserve officer training core. >> there was a special delivery today for the homeless families served by philadelphia charity. employees from citizens bank brought these stockings of hope to the people's emergency center in mantua. the care packages are full of hats gloves, toys and also gift cards. they will be distributed to 53 homeless families just in time for christmas. sterling high school hosted its fifth annual toy drive in somerdale, new jersey. members of the student radio station wore costumes and stood outside in the cold to solicit donations throughout the day. their hard work paid off. they collected this massive pile of toys to be given to local children who are in need. still to come on "action news" at 4:00 free movies, free cookies, free festive rides around philadelphia. that's all ahead in freebie

to toss out a large amount of breast milk that she need for her baby. sara sallow and her husband went up to the ticket counter of american airlines with a diaper bag stroller and a cooler filled with frozen breast milk when she was told she had too many bags and needed to check something but the mom pushed back saying she called the airline ahead of time and found out certain items were exempt from being counted as a bag and could be carried at all times. they were flying from boston to phoenix when the american airlines employee said the cooler with the eight bags of breast milk would have to be checked for $150. >> we were pretty mad. i immediately started crying. >> well, instead of paying the $150 the couple left the cooler and the breast milk to be thrown out. american airlines issued a statement apologizing to sallow and said she should have been allowed to fly with her breast milk. >> too little too late for

her. next a washington state man was so fed up with thieves stealing packages right off his front porch, that he decided to do something about it and by the looks of it, it's working. yes, that's what jeremy barois calling the blank box. designed to look like an ordinary delivery package it's rigged with fishing wire an 12 gauge shotgun blank that explodes every time a grinch attempts to steal it. barocreated this device after dozens of packages were stolen from his tacoma home. >> i wantd a way to scare them safely. hopefully until drop the package run away and never come back. >> as you can see the blank box appears to be pretty darn effective. scaring away no shortage of would be thieves he says you know what, this is legal. barois now selling the device in fact which he makes himself in the basement and says business like the box is exploding .

freeze solid here now that we're losing that daylight which is a little bit of radiation to warm the ground so just be cautious of that overnight as well. as we take a look at the weather sent we have a winter weather advisory in effect until 9 o'clock tonight for most of our viewing area. northern chester, montgomery bucks county the lehigh valley where this advisory is not in effect and mainly it's in this area 'cause this is where the most accumulating snow is falling and also we're dealing with that refreeze here this evening as anything that is slushy as i mentioned hardens right up so that light coating of snow on the ground with that winter weather advisory. as we take a look at storm tracker6 live double scan right now, there you can see to the west where it's ending lancaster, reading, allentown but snowing steady elsewhere from montgomery county, bucks county, chester county, all points down to the shore here and we're dealing with some moderate snowfall where we're seeing a little bit of purple develop on long long beach island and near hammonton on

the atlantic city expressway, also 55 near millville and glassboro in between there, some good moderate snowfall and also right along route 70 there between browns mills and medford lakes and center city light snow right now as we just saw on the action cam and to the north and west you can see it is really starting to dry up and that drier air puncturing in so ending in honey brook very soon in coatesville malvern doylestown lansdale you're about to see your last flakes fall. as we look at temperatures they're in the low 20's reading and allentown, 25 philadelphia. the same for millville. and these numbers are going to stay very cold overnight. the snow really just blossomed as we talked about last night out of nowhere. it was a jet stream, a river of airway up in the atmosphere that helped to fuel this storm right over us, developing a coastal right now and that coastal skirting south of new england. so, about 6 o'clock tonight, it will be ending in wilmington, philadelphia and trenton, so about an hour from

now in the city of philadelphia an hour or so later for the shore with the clouds lingering in spots and a little bit of stars and once everything is done here this evening, we're going to pick up between that one and 3-inches. this is not additional to what is falling but in total one to 3 inches for a good chunk of our viewing area and then to the north and west, it's pretty much ended there so what you see is what you got between that coating and an inch and the same for cape may county and also kent county and parts of sussex county a coating to an inch as well. so, the jet stream right now is dipping way down to the south and that's locking in the cold air today and partly through tomorrow. but changes come late this weekend, early next week. that jet stream retreats back up into canada and we puncture in a good warm shot here for the beginning of next week to get a little bit of melting going on. as we take a look at that exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow 42 degrees but even though that sounds warmer, it's still going to be pretty windy tomorrow, so it's going to feel more like
