>> multiple people reported dead on amtrak passenger train derailed in pierce county washington. along with the train victims several drivers were injured as they went through the overpass on interstate five. one train dangled above. >> we are aware of the fact that this was called an inaugural run of this -- this service but we want to check and make sure what thatly exactly means and find out more information about that. >> reporter: one morning commuter says the scene was sobering. >> there were cars on both sides of the bridge falling onto the freeway. there appeared to be it looked like a semi and a passenger truck that was underneath the whole front end smashed in. i mean, it was a very brief moment but that's what it looked like to me. >> reporter: more than 80 passengers and crew were on board the amtrak train. the national transportation safety board is sending 20 investigators from d.c. to washington state to investigate. >> several of our investigator

on the west coat will becoast we this afternoon. >> reporter: omar jimenez reporting. >> while the ntsb works to determine this crash it brings back memories of the crash that happened here in that port richmond just two years ago. amtrak train 188 derailed in may 2015. eight people were killed and more than 200 others were injured in that incident. the train was traveling 106 miles an hour in a 50 miles per hour speed zone. investigators determined that the engineer was distracted by an incident with a nearby train. in september, a judge dismissed charges against that engineer. you can follow the latest developments of the fatal amtrak derailment on 6abc.com. you can watch video from the scene in washington state. >> pennsylvania state senator day lon leach released a new

statement. john rawlins live in center city philadelphia this afternoon with the very latest including john some reaction from the governor. >> reporter: that's correct. leach is a state senator who has ambitions his goal in 2018 to get the nod to run for congress. he's a progressive. he's a backer of many women's issues but now he finds himself fighting allegations of misbehaving around women. at this point there are calls for his resignation. at this point though he has not reacted to it. leach's latest statement today i am taking a step back from the congressional campaign to focus on my family and work will senate leaders to address these allegations and fully cooperate as they are all vetted. that statement came shortly after the governor a fellow democrat said again it's time for leach to resign. >> i have had zero tolerance for this and back when i was in the private sector, i had

zero tolerance for it in the executive branch. i -- this is not something that anybody, male or female should be forced to subject themself or herself to in the course of doing a job. >> reporter: the state senator's district office in king of prussia opened for business today but no one was wanted to talk about the cloud hanging over the boss. the published allegations leach inappropriately touched some young women in other cases made crude sexual comments on the record aubrey montgomery a one time campaign finance director told the inquirer she was offended by leach's language. daylin suggested i just didn'tga prude and characterized me to my colleagues as the campaign's wet blanket. the more uncomfortable daylin made me the more he would dial up the intensity. the more i discussed my discomfort at his sexual and off color humor the funnier it was to him. leach donee denies he touched anyone inappropriately.

that was a pretty good win. >> pretty it was not but a win is a win. the eagles have notched off another goal. they'll host the oakland raiders in a game that might not mean anything. in his first games since taking over for the injured wentz foles threw for four touchdowns. the defense held when it needed to. now if the vikings lose on saturday, the eagles will lock up home field advantage throughout the playoffs. that would make the final two games meaningless. what would the birds do then? coach pederson cautions against putting the cart ahead of the horse. >> i've begun thinking but my focus is winning the game because on monday night because that to me is the most important thing. once we get to next week, we'll figure out next week. but -- but my mind-set this

island. >> it is time now for a first check on the "action news" traffic report today. >> all right, let's go live to matt pelman and the "action news" traffic center this monday. hi, schrat hi, guys. the good news this afternoon is pretty much anything could happen and it would still be a better ride than friday afternoon which was an absolute disaster. so comparatively speaking this afternoon doesn't look too bad in center city along the vine street expressway but we're stacking up especially on the westbound side approaching the schuylkill. in glenside big issues this afternoon. southbound lanes of 309, this is the scene at easton road and just up ahead there's a truck fire at cheltenham avenue. all blocked off here as you try and travel southbound on 309 away from acadia university is an absolute mess. you want to steer clear 309 southbound blocked just up ahead because of a truckire. in east rockhill bucks county an accident investigation is going on and branch road is blocked as a result. fifth street can get you around that. heading up to the lehigh valley a little slowing on the northeast extension because on

the nonprofit helps children who have been affected by violent crimes. right now the group helps more than 400 kids in the city of camden. but they say that number is always growing. a new school in mount laurel burlington county is ready to help children with autism and special needs. some students were there as local leaders celebrated the opening of the raymond and joanne welsh bancroft campus. they say this is one of the first schools specifically designed to meet the needs of challenged -- children living with autism. campus will help more than many more than 250 students ages eight to 21. well, as you mentioned just a couple aints ago the eagles are fresh offer that road win up in new york and many of the players are already busy paying their joy forward. >> eagles players are surprising families in the delaware valley with christmas gifts and holiday meals. sharrie and brian. we had a lot of people up here working really hard today to go out make a happy holiday for so many people who likely wouldn't have a happy holiday if it weren't for their help and it all started with the eagles malcolm jenkins. >> one,one, two, three. >> reporter: by the looks of the smiles on their faces,. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: and display of talented dance moves it's a happy day inside the home of berniece beatty and her eight grandchildren. the eagles malcolm jenkins some teammates and several members of the philadelphia police showed up with gifts and an incredible holiday meal. >> it's beautiful. >> i love it. >> reporter:. >> go, eagles, right. >> reporter: this is just one of many families jenkins and company are making deliveries to to ensure a happy holidays. this all made possible by many organizations but it was spearheaded by the malcolm jenkins foundation and philadelphia police athletic league.

>> we have been blessed enough to have these holidays with our families with food, with gifts. it's our way of giving back. >> reporter: we caught up with jenkins and deputy police commissioner joe sullivan at the pal center in strawberry mansion before they and volunteers packed everything up and shipped them out. >> for these families christmas would just be another day of the week and that's what's really great and this is the third year that the malcolm jenkins foundation has done this the second year they invited the police department to come in and partner with them and we're grateful for that. >> reporter: in all 27 organizations are going to make deliveries to five families each in need. one organization that's being helped the ronald mcdonald house. they showed us what they'll be getting. >> huge turkey dinner with everything from soup to nuts from the turkey to the delicious apple pie, there's toys for the kids as well as gifts that the center will be able to use. >> reporter: that was a great story. i'm looking at my notes here. after it was all said and done almost 140 deliveries were going to be made helping out a

higher than but that does not mean there's no chance of finding any snowfall on that day. we have an active pattern and it will look more wet than white as we get into christmas day so we've got more details on that and if that changes we'll let you know as well. 49 degrees right now in philadelphia after a high today of 50. 50 in wilmington. 45 for allentown and reading. 39 up in the poconos. down in dover, 52. and 50 in cape may. looking at satellite6 along with action radar we've got a partly cloudy sky across the region and it stays dry as we go throughout the rest of tonight. so we're looking pretty good. so, for the next 12 hours numbers will be mild for december. 38 degrees in philadelphia for the overnight low. that's 10 degrees above the typical overnight low this time of year. 34 in allentown. 35 for reading and lancaster. down in dover, 38. 36 in millville and wilmington and 37 there in trenton. as we get into the day on tuesday, we've got another good looking day. a partly sunny sky overhd.

you start the morning out 7:00 a.m. a temperature of 42. 44 at 9:00 a.m. then we're up into the middle and lower 50's right alo t i-95 corridor well above average. but things will be changing as we get into the middle half of our work week. cooler air comes back into the region so across the area by 2:30 wednesday, numbers little bit more seasonable along the i-95 corridor. you have the upper 30's to the north and west and the 20's up in the mountains there in the poconos. so, the four day at 4:00 forecast showing you we are 12 degrees above average on tuesday, a high temperature of 56 and on wednesday it's cooler with high clouds around, not a bad looking day, a high temperature of 45. on thursday, the winter solstice begins at 11:28 in the morning with a high of 42. mostly cloudy on friday. high temperature coming in at 49. we've got more details, guys, coming up in the next half hour. >> all right, doesn't look bad at all. >> no. >> and the days start getting longer. >> yes. >> love that. >> a philadelphia police officer will sleep more soundly and maybe even have sweet dreams because of a knock at his door today. the action cam was in northeast philadelphia this morning as heor rodruez was surprised with ad a $1,000 . the give away was orchestrated by mattress warehouse as part of its annual effort to honor those who protect and serve. officer rodriguez is not just a philadelphia police officer, he's an army veteran and a father of three. he says he'll spend the some ton give the kids the christmas they deserve. >> well deserved for him also. a multi-million dollars renovation in germantown is finished. the face to face soup kitchen started repairs to his location on east price street in the spring. seven mons later the brand new fality isrea to help those in need. you. >> there you go. >> and a porch pirate picks up two boxes from an east mount airy home hoping to get away with something expensive. but he was really just stealing somebody's memories. the photographer that was targeted coming up. >> but we're going begin now at 4:30 with the very latest on that devastating amtrak derailment in washington state. >> though we do not he exact numbers yet authorities tell us there were several fatalities. this happened when a passenger train en route from seattle to portland for the first time derailed in pierce county during the morning rush hour. in addition to those injured on the train, several drivers were hurt as they passed under the train overpass. officials say the derailment may have happened during the train's first run. >> this was called an inaugural run of this -- this service, but we want to check and make sure what that exactly means and find out more information about that. >> hospital officials say at least two people are in critical condition.

another 11 were seriously hurt. as many as 50 more were also admitted to the hospital but authorities are not saying anything about their injuries. the crash itself remains under investigation by several agencies. >> and of course we urge you to stick with "action news" for the very latest on this story both on air and online at 6abc.com and world news tonight with david muir will have live team coverage of this disaster coming up right after "action news" at 6:00 tonight. >> we turn now to philadelphia's east mount airy section where police are asking the public to help them track down a package thief. that alone isn't unique this time of year but this time the porch pirate stole more than just a package. he stole memories of a very special moment. "action news" reporter vernon odom live near the scene of this crime to explain. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, sharrie. we're talking about wedding albums here. designated for couples spending their very first christmas together.

a sentimental time for sure. they'll get them but not in time for christmas day. police are looking to arrest this man. they say he's a thief caught here on home security cameras walking up to the front door and calming stealing a pair of boxes freshly delivered by ups. >> it's a very clear picture of him when he bends down to go get the packages you can even see the brand of underwear he's wearing. the boxes were the property of a wedding photographer who works out of her home. the thief took wedding albums just back from her printer to be sent to the newlyweds in time for christmas and absecond box contained new camera gear. the albums cannot be replaced in time for holiday delivery. they're value only to the families of the bride and groom who decide on the design and content with they are. >> once it's finalized i send it to a professional printing company i use and then it gets shipped to me and i ship it out to my clients along with their usb drive.

>> reporter: police in the 14th police district say during the holiday season they get an average of five reports of this kind every week. >> he actually looks really comfortable when it's happening which is more disturbing to me because he doesn't seem rushed or nervous. he walks up to my front gate loiter there is for a second a postal truck passes by, a car passes by. he fiddles with my gate because he can't figure out which way it opens. he gets in, walksp,ends down stacks them picks them up, leaves. >> reporter: sharrie, it's a sad reality for folks here in the city and in the suburbs as well. police believe many crooks simply roam neighborhoods looking for packages that are left on porches as people are out to work or taking care of other tasks or they've simply shadow delivery trucks then strike after they pull away. i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news" in germantown. >> yup, a sad case for sure. vernon, thank you. police are looking for a grinch who stole christmas in

south philadelphia. this is surveillance video showing a person swiping not one, not two but three small christmas trees as well as two ornament bushes. the decorations were stolen from outside a home on the 1100 block of fitzgerald street. this was early in the morning on december 9th. if you have any idea who this guy is, contact south detectives. >> two people were injured in when a dart bus collided with a car. it happened at 7 o'clock this morning on lancaster pike and barley mill drive in wilmington. the bus ran a red light and crashed into the other vehicle. both drivers will be okay. e driver of the car was cited for failure to have insurance identification. the bus driver was ticketed for failing to stop at that red light. >> turning back to our forecast and not a bad way to start the new work week. >> mild monday. >> yeah. >> not bad. you said it. meteorologi melissa magee joining us now. a lot of m's here. mild monday, melissa magee. >> mild monday, how about a terrific tuesday. >> bring it. >> okay. >> hey now. let's show you what's going on outside guys as we look at the

songs of the holidays could be heard today in philadelphia's bustleton neighborhood. >> ♪ >> for students with the calvary christian academy choir lifted spirits and brought sounds of the season to residents at paul's run senior living mmunity. the high schoolers invited the residents to sing right along. denise sullivan is the choir director and her love of music comes from her mother who also is a resident at paul's run. sullivan and the students thought a choir show would be a great way to end the year. dozens of local police officers are carrying out the dream of a shells five-year-old girl. today they delivered thousands of toys to the alfred i. dupont hospital for children in honor of the late jillian is that so mee sassy massey. before she passed she told her mom she wanted other pediatric

but we're still saddled with delays in a lot of spots as you try and head home on this monday afternoon. 422 westbound a sea of red brake lights lighting up. it's because of a problem on the eastbound side up ahead near royersford. that's where there's a vehicle fire giving us restrictions so extra heavy westbound, gaper delay in the normally busy spot because of that eastbound vehicle fire. i would use ridge pike main street or 724 instead of 422 this afternoon. heading home toward the lehigh valley delays on the northbound side of the northeast extension from quakertown up to the lehigh valley interchange. that's where there's an overturned truck partially blocking the off ramp from the northbound side. because of those speeds like 20 miles per hour you might want to come up 309 towards center valley instead. you don't want to get on 309 southbound in cheltenham township. it's parked. speeds like 11 miles per hour because of a truck fire close to cheltenham avenue. think about using germantown

also lancaster 50 degrees in cape may and 52 degrees in dover. as we go throughout the rest of the evening hours and into tonight, numbers for the most part will be in the 40's. still well above average and we stay in the 40's even as we get into the overnight hours and early tomorrow morning so quite mild for december. looking at satellite6 along with action radar we have got a partly cloudy sky across much of the delaware and lehigh valleys. a little bit of precipitation off to the north and west but all in all it is quiet across the midatlantic. so, for the next 12 hours, patchy clouds around, mild for this month. we'll drop down to 34 in the suburbs and 38 degrees in philadelphia for the overnight low with that west to southwesterly wind at three to 6 miles per hour. we get into the day on tuesday, the commuter forecast showing you very mild on your tuesday. 7:00 a.m. a number coming in at 42. 43 at 8 o'clock in the morning. by lunchtime tomorrow, already in at 52. then the middle and lower 50's on the way as we get into the afternoon hours and that's a good 12 degrees above average

here in philadelphia. so, looking at the setup for us on our tuesday, clouds and sunshine, a high temperature of 56 degrees and again, well above where we normally should be for this time of year. tracking a cold front off to the west. that front squeaks through and sags to our south as we get into wednesday so by then a little cooler but still not a bad afternoon midweek, a high temperature of 45 degrees. there is an area of low pressure off to our south on wednesday and because of that, we have more of a milky and slate gray sky overhead. here's the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, we are 12 degrees above average tomorrow. high temperature up to 56. on wednesday, it's cooler with a few high clouds around and at 45. on thursday, a high up to 42 and thursday by the way, is when the winter solstice begins at 11:28 in the morning. so, the first full day of winter on friday. we've got a mostly cloudy sky, high temperature in at 49. on saturday, it's mild with some rain but look at that high. we're up to 61 degrees.

>> breaking news tonight. tragedy on the tracks in washington state. an amtrak commuter train derails near seattle sending several of the rail cars plunging onto a busy highway. more than 70 passengers and crew members were on board and tonight we're learning of multiple fatalities and injuries. it is monday night. monica malpass is off. sharrie williams is joining us and the big story on "action news" is that active investigation into what caused an amtrak train to derail and crash in pierce county washington state. >> now, more than 80 passengers and crew were on board when a train car went off of an overpass and fell onto the highway below. officials say there are multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries but have not released exact numbers. >> five cars and two semis on the hewable below were impacted by the crash. but officials say there were no fatalities from those vehicles. >> hazmat is a concern. we have hazmat hazardous
