incident response team on the way. our concern right now if fuel and batteries. >> this track had carried freight trains but was recently upgraded to carry passengers. in fact today was the first day of public use of the tracks after weeks of inspection and testing. >> well, the investigation is only beginning with this crash but it's already drawing early comparisons to the deadly amtrak crash in the port richmond section of philadelphia two years ago. eight people were killed and hundreds injured in that crash. >> "action news"'s sarah bloomquist live for us at 30th street station with that part of the story tonight. sarah. >> reporter: and rick and sharrie, of course 30th street atn a very busy placehi time of year with the holidays ahead. of course that derailment in washington of concern to passengers today. many also couldn't help but think of the train derailment of amtrak train 188 just two and a half years ago in may of 2015. we se to an attorney who represented many of those passengers.

he tells us he has a good guess as to what caused today's derailment raiment. here at 30th street station many students are heading home for the o holidays and they were concerned given amtrak's derailment south of seattle. >> it's a little scary. i think it's crazy and i really feel for those people andheir families. >> generally i feel safe but aveling in inclement weather it's in the back of my mind. robert mongeluzzi represented 34 passengers on amtrak train 188. the train derailed in port richmond with 238 passengers on board. eight were killed and over 200 injured. the train was traveling over 100 miles an hour in a 50 miles per hour zone when it hit a curve and went off the tracks. he sees striking similarities to today's derailment. >> the first thing that you think about when a train derails on a curve is it was going too fast. and when you see the

locomotive, which is heavier and goes on a straight path while everything behind it falls over, it is eerily reminiscent of amtrak 188. >> reporter: the ntsb found that the philadelphia derailment could have been prevented by positive train control, a computerized speed limiting system. the safety measure is not in place nationwide and reportedly was not being used on the rails the washington train was traveling. >> well, they clearly haven't learned. how many more people are they going to kill before this company makes safety first and they obviously haven't done it. >> reporter: amtrak ceo confirmed in a conference call this afternoon that positive train control was not being used on the stretch of track where the washington train derailed today. the private owner of that rail says it is installed there but

that does not necessarily mean that it was activated. of course we don't yet know the cause of today's derailment south of seattle. that's an investigation that's typically takes about a year. lie live at 30th street station i'm sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news." >> follow the latest on that amtrak derailment on 6abc.com. watch video from the scene in washington state. >> a vote on the republican tax bill could come as early as tomorrow. president trump has said he would sign the bill before christmas calling it a great gift. if he signs the bill by december 31st, the changes would take effect next year. the tax plan would cut the corporate tax rate from 35 to 21 percent and lower the top tax rate from 39.6 percent to 37 percent. the new bill also eliminates the obamacare mandate. the white house is confident they have enough votes. but not everyone is

pleased with the republican's proposed tax cuts. this was the scene outside of congressman brian costello's officers in chester county earlier today. the southeastern pennsylvania american federation of labor and congress of industrial organizations hosted a rally against the tax reform plan. those against the plan believe it will result in a loss of jobs higher taxes, restricted social services and an increase national debt. >> new jersey state police are investigate what caused a serious crash in burlington county. chopper6 hd over the scene at carranza road in shamong township. state police say the vehicle ran into a pole around noontime. two people who were inside the vehicle died. the victims have not yet been identified. >> well, eagles fans have a lot to celebrate today following the team's win against the new york giants yesterday. the 34-29 victory was the first full game without carson wentz this season.

starting quarterback nick foles threw four touchdown passes. the win secured a first round playoff bye for the team as well. the eagles will take on the oakland raiders next and you can watch that game christmas night right here on 6abc. >> and while some eagles fans might consider yesterday's victory an early christmas present, eagles player malcolm jenkins spent part of his day surprising a family in philadelphia's strawberry mansion section with that real christmas gifts. "action news" reporter bob brooks has those details tonight of the big surprise. great story here, bob, hm? >> reporter: yeah, rick, good evening, yeah, great story. i'll tell you what, we're up here at the police athletic center in strawberry mansion. there's a lot of people working really hard to make sure that a lot of people out there have a happy holidays. it all started with the eagles malcolm jenkins. let's take a look. by the looks of the smiles on their faces and display of talented dance moves it's a happy day inside the home of berniece beatty and her eight grandchildren but it's not hard to see why either. the eagles malcolm jenkins

some teammates and several members of the philadelphia police showed up with gifts and an incredible holiday meal. >> it's beautiful. the kids love it. i love it. >> reporter: go eagles, right this is one of many families jenkins and company are making deliveries to to ensure a happy holidays. it's all made possible by many organizations but it was spearheaded by the malcolm jenkins foundation and philadelphia police athletic league. we caught up with jenkins and deputy police commissioner joe sullivan at the pal center in strawberry mansion before they and volunteers packed everything up and shipped them out. >> we've been blessed to have holidays with our families with food and gift. it's our way of giving back. >> for these families christmas would be just another day of the week. that's what's really great. this the third year that the malcolm jenkins foundation has done this, second year they invited the philadelphia police department to come in and partner with them. >> reporter: 27 organizations are going to make deliveries to five families each in need. one organization that's being helped the ronald mcdonald

house. they showed us what they'll be getting. >> a huge turkey dinner with everything from soup to nuts from the turkey to the delicious apple pie, there's toys for the kids as well as gifts that the center will be able to use year round. >> reporter: i'll tell you what, great story here. looking at my notes a lot of families were helped, rick. in all i'm told about 140 deliveries were made. for now reporting live in strawberry mansion bob brooks channel6 "action news." rick back to you. >> all right, thank you bob for that report. >> time now for the "action news" traffic report. >> monday night. matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. how was your weekend, matt. >> you know, i wasn't sure how much of a weekend i'd have left after i made it home friday night. what a mess that was. but after that, it was pretty good, rick and sharrie. this afternoon travel times look a whole lot better on the schuylkill than they did friday night, but there's still not ideal. 32 minutes is still more than double what it ideally should be here on the eastbound side. we've got a vehicle off to the side just east of montgomery avenue.

police assisting there. but overall the lanes are opened. it's just heavy traffic in them. better news in cheltenham. our vehicle fire on the southbound side of 309 near cheltenham avenue cleared out so speeds there back up into the mid-50's. we'll take it. you might want to use 309 northbound instead of the northbound side of the northeast extension headed towards allentown this afternoon. there's an overturned truck on the ramp from the northbound side of 476 to lehigh valley. you can squeeze by but it's a tight fit. back to normal on 422 our eastbound vehicle fire near royersford is off to the side. westbound you have your typical slowing headed out towards phoenixville and collegeville. a number of accidents in delaware. there's one along route four at samoset drive. overturned vehicle along 495 northbound north of 95. just 15 miles per hour there. we'll check it again though rick and sharrie, coming up in the next half hour. >> matt we'll see you then. thank you. >> still ahead on "action news" at 5:00 are holiday celebrations hurting your

>> health check tonight. the fda is trying to crack down on homeopathic drugs that can do more harm than good. >> health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman at the big board with new details. >> agency proposing stricter enforcement saying it will target products that pose the greatest risk. those are the ones that include targeting kids or elderly products that come in the form of an injection, products that could have potentially dangerous ingredients and also ones that claim to treat a serious disease. in the past the fda has issued warnings about nasal sprays containing sink.

like dietary supplements the agency doesn't review safety or effectiveness of homeopathic products before they're sold but unlike supplements these products are are marketed towards a specific medical condition. the fda is taking public comments about this new proposal. hustle and bustle of the holiday season can be exhausting. it can also be dangerous for some people due to a condition known as holiday heart syndrome. it can happen when you're running from one place to another eating drinking and celebrating the season. if you drink alcohol excessively, it could spark your heart to beat in an abnormal rhythm and it can happen even to healthy people. the most common heart arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation. you'll feel like your heart is racing, you may feel dizzy or short of breath. for some people a-fib is

>> if you ever wanted to ride in pope style now you can. one of the two fiats that the pontiff used to get around philadelphia during his visit in 2015 is up for auction. and "action news" reporter trish hartman has the details tonight. >> as you can see the car is in excellent, excellent condition. it's been garage keptism in the. in the basement of a parking garage in philadelphia sits a special vehicle waiting for its home. >> the biggest selling point the holy father was in this car. >> reporter: the fiat fun hundred hatchback used by pope francis when he visited philadelphia for the world meeting of families in september 2015. after the pope left, the cars were donated to the archdiocese of philadelphia. the first was auctioned off last year and went for $82,000. >> we decided to auction the second vehicle for charity just as we did with the first. all the roads will benefit the

stepping down from his post citing a substance addiction problem. john skipper has been head of the company since 2012. in a statement skipper said the most important thing he can do right now is "take care of my problem but no specific details of the problem were provided. george bodenheimer will serve as acting chair. espn and 6abc are owned by the walt disney company. >> you could call it a tasty marriage of the sweet and salty. hershey's is buying the maker of skinny pop popcorn. hershey says it will help them become an innovative supply house. hershey recently took over a bid from oreo maker mondelez international incorporated. >> peco is lighting up the holidays including a popular holiday garden rail way at the

>> time for the accuweather forecast. meteorologist cecily tynan is here now with the warm details, unseasonably warm today. >> 6 degrees above normal. last week at this time i was tracking snow on the way. >> right. >> actually two bouts of snow. let's head over to the "action news" weather center and we are live on sky6 taking a look at the rothman ice rink at city hall a lot of folks out and about looking all ready for the holidays and you better get ready because christmas is now only one week away. i know my kids are really excited and the main question everyone asks me as i do my live facebook chats in the afternoon everyone says what's the chance of a white christmas. historically we don't have a good chance. 7.9 percent chance that we will have at least an inch of snow on the ground in philadelphia. this year the chance is no higher. we have a very active pattern setting up this week. we had a lot of systems moving through. however most of them will be cutting to our west pulling in

warm air so christmas unfortunately for a lot of people is looking more wet than white right now. right now out there if we did have any precipitation it would be rain, not snow, just too warm for that. 47 degrees in philadelphia, again our high 50 degrees. allentown 44. trenton 46. cape may 48. even in the poconos, pretty mild, 38 degrees. satellite and radar showing kind of a mixed bag today. mix of clouds and sunshine, more clouds rolling in in the afternoon. now the clouds are really retreating so tonight just a few patchy clouds. temperatures very mild. normal low for this time of the year is 29 for philadelphia. so nearly 10 degrees above normal. 38 degrees allentown 34, cape may 39 and wilmington 36 degrees. as we head through the day tomorrow, it's going to be a pretty nice day but not feeling like mid to late december. temperatures up to about 45 degrees by 9 o'clock. should manage to make it up into the mid 50's about 10 degrees above normal under partly sunny skies and then

temperatures start to step down on wednesday and thursday. so, future tracker showing wednesday afternoon instead of temperatures in the 50's, we're generally in the 30's and 40's. thursday will be the coolest day of the week before temperatures start trending up as we head towards the holiday weekend. the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow 56 degrees. that's 12 degrees above average. mixture of clouds and sunshine. on wednesday a lot of high clouds. i think we'll get some filtered sunshine. the temperatures drop down to 45 degrees. thursday as winter officially arrives at 11:28, it's seasonably cool, 42 degrees and that's the coolest day of the week. by friday, it clouds up, 49 degrees. perhaps some rain on friday night. saturday 61 degrees but it's not a bright and sunny 61. we'll have occasional rain. we'll talk about christmas eve and christmas in the seven-day forecast coming up a little bit later. back to you guys. >> christmas eve we could see some rain deer. >> yes, honey. you do that every year. >> every year. >> it's always funny.

>> ♪ >> "action news" continues with meteorologist adam joseph, jaime apody, rick williams and monica malpass. >> ♪ >> hello again. monica is off. i'm sharrie williams. here's what's happening on "action news" tonight. a thief is caught on camera stealing two albums filled with precious wedding photos from a woman's front porch and president trump outlines his new national security strategy and it could alter u.s. international relationships. plus an amtrak train derailment outside of seattle has resulted in multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries. >> ♪ >> now to that breaking news story out of the pacific northwest tonight. the lane there went off a bridge and crashed onto a major interstate. scott cardy is following the story and has the latest. >> track five emergency. we are on the ground. we are on the bridge. need emsasam.

looks like they're starting to show up. >> reporter: tragedy on the tracks. just before 8:00 a.m. pacific time an amtrak train traveling south of tacoma washington went off the rails and crashed on the busy highway traffic during rush hour. >> started hearing all the sirens and turned on the news and then we saw itism. >> reporter: the department of transportationization at least 78 passengers and five crew were on board. several motorists on the highway were injured. local authorities say all of them survived. >> right now life safety is really our precedence right now. we've got fire and law enforcement we need to make sure so we need to secure that scene, we need to make sure those cars are safe before they can get on and check for more casualties. >> reporter: inner state five was which evidence in both directions traffic at a standstill for miles. one victim on the train says he and his fellow passengers can tossed into the seats in front of them as it went off the tracks. president trump exposing expressing the nation's thoughts and prayers.

of their trade practices. >> any nation that trades away its prosperity for security will end up losing both. >> the president also made it clear the united states will not back down on foreign policy issues that could alienate other countries. that includes climate change and immigration. >> and. military base in england used by the u.s. air force was locked down today after someone rammed a car through a checkpoint. british police are not treating this as terrorism. a 44-year-old british man was arrested raf milden air base on suspicion of criminal trespass. officials say there was no threat to the public or those on the basement they're not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. >> back here firefighters in camden were busy this morning at 6:45 a.m. they were called called to a home on the 1600 block of pulaski street. the fire heavily damaged the second floor of this row home. it appears it was contained to

this one residential home and it did not spread to neighboring houses. a newspaper delivery truck and a carp crashed in bristol township at 3 o'clock this morning. the front end of the truck all smashed in as you can see here. the car was already towed from the scene by the time we arrived. both drivers were taken to the hospital. we still do not know the extent of their injuries. >> well, it's going to be a disappointing christmas for some newlyweds. their wedding photos were stolen off of a popular photographer's porch. vernon odom has the story in east mount airy. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, sharrie. these types of thefts are multiplying during the holiday season because the bandits know where shopping online is steadily rising. so, with the new age version of snatching shopping bags. alexa mahas is a professional

photographer. 31 weddings done this year alone. she produces the albums as well. she works out of her home in mount airy. she says this man stole two of her completed albums ready for mailing to her clients last week. they were just back from a printer via ups and left at her doorstep along with a second box containing new camera gear. she cannot get the albums replaced in time for christmas delivery to her clients. >> my clients will still get their albums. unfortunately it cuts into my profits because i have to reprint them at cost to me. ups doesn't really take responsibility for it. so, they'll get them just in time for christmas. >> reporter: police here in the 14th district say they get an average of five such theft reports per week during the holiday season. she says this one happened within a space of 30 to 40 minutes when she was not watching her security cameras or listening for a knock at the door. >> i was very aware of it being a problem but it's never really been a problem on this

to stick with 95 northbound and the vine westbound not that chunk of the westbound schuylkill through university city. also tonight they're going to be closing the eastbound side of 422 heading toward pottstown like they do sometimes. so, high street or 724 would be alternates. some slowing right now in that westbound work zone heading towards stow. major delays on the northbound side of the northeast extension, now single digits headed toward that overturned tractor-trailer on the off ramp to lehigh valley. come up 309 toward allentown, not the northbound side of 476 this afternoon. on the east west turnpike westbound past norristown there's a broken down vehicle taking out the left lane. bunch of accidents in delaware this afternoon. the ones along 495 and 95 have cleared but there's still one along route four at samoset drive. stay up on route two. that might be a little bit better. over in tabernacle township an accident investigation is closing carranza road. old indian mills road can get you around that. rick and sharrie back to you.

>> here's a story that makes us philly proud. a convoy pulled up to the a.i. dupont hospital carrying lots of toys. people made a human chain as they unloaded the toys. they were passed from person-to-person until they made their way under the tree. all the toys were donated in memory of five-year-old jillian sassy massey who lost her battle with brain cancer earlier this month. coming up at 6 o'clock we'll take to you children's hospital of philadelphia where even more toys were delivered in her honor. >> and santa made a stop at saint christopher's hospital in hunting park. and this santa was really flyers legend bernie parent dressing up as the big guy. he was joined by mrs. claus and an elf. together they delivered gifts to kids who were spend, the holidays in the hospital. the toys were collected by members of the ed snider youth hockey foundation. so many things that make us proud to call the delaware valley home. let's see what else makes us philly proud log onto
