pence has made a surprise visit to afghanistan where he says victory is closer than ever because of progress on the ther. he offered holiday greetings to u.s. troops and assured them that the trump administration is committed to staying in the fight until the end. >> under president donald trump, the armed forces of the united states will remain engaged in afghanistan until we eliminate the terrorist threat to our homeland, our people once and for all. [ applause ] >> that war is already in its 15th year and pence met with afghan leaders and say they confirm that more senior taliban leaders have been eliminated this year than in all previous years of the war. new sanctions on north korea will be voted on. the u.s. is pushing for new punishments in the wake of his recent missile launch and include tougher limbs on oil exports and restricting north koreans from working abroad.

many will watch on how china votes. u.s. ambassador nikki haley has invited the countries that chose not to denounce the trump administration on thursday to a reception. the u.n. general assembly passed a nonbinding resolution that condemns the u.s. for recognizing jerusalem as israel's capital. the vote was 128-9 despite president trump's threat to cut off aid. >> we got new details in that election recount in virginia that seems to go on forever and forever. we now know how it will be decided. each candidate's name will be printed on a piece of paper which will be placed inside old film canisters stored in the election department's office. the canisters will go into a bowl and be shaken and a member of the board of elections will randomly pick one to determine the winner. that person will determine which party actually controls the that's just about the same.
