delaware county town tonight destroying homes and forcing evacuations. more than a hundred people are sent to a shelter but good samaritan neighbors are rushing in to help with clothes, food and toys for little ones forced to leave santa surprises behind. >> tuesday night. i'm monica malpass. the big story is a relentless inferno that raged for an hour and a half in the one mile square town of brookhaven. annie mccormick is there where fire crews are looking for the cause. annie? >> monica, that's right. it took an hour and a half to get the fire under control. in total, 13 families are without a home after 18 units were destroyed. >> from chopper 6hd, you can see the flames shooting out of the roof on hill top drive.

>> it was an inferno. the flames were leaping into the air 30 or 40 feet. i couldn't believe it was my bidding and place on fire. everything i have is on fire. >> first responders went door to door to alert residents. >> i called 911 right away. they told me to get out. i did. it was awful. i have never seen anything like that. >> i ran into the building to clear rooms with one of the officers to be sure no one was in the building. >> we saw neighbors helping neighbors, bringing others in out of the cold. the fire wiped out most of building c, at the time, 18 units were occupied. brookhaven fire department tells us the cold conditions didn't help. tonight, everyone is accounted

for. luckily, there were no injuries. >> they were brought down a 34-foot ladder from the third floor balcony. the family was safe. no one was hurt. >> the red cross opened at the hall. in just a short time tonight, they were flooded with donations and are asking the public to instead give monetary donations to the red cross. >> monica, the good news tonight, the number of people the red cross has to help has gone down since earlier in the evening. red paw relief, an organization that looking for pets during fires or after, they tell us six pets are in their care tonight. all are accounted for. as for t cause of fire, it is under investigation. the fire investigator will be out here tomorrow morning. annie mccormick, "action news."

committed suicide, shooting himself in the head. the pentagon is not commenting on a lawsuit filed over gun background checks. new york and san francisco say the defense department failed to report significant numbers of disqualifying numbers like dishonorable discharges of service members to the national background check system. this came to light during the texas massacre. the gunman that killed 26 people at a church there was criminally convicted by the air force. had that information been reported to the data base, the killer wouldn't have been allowed to legally buy a gun. a suspect is in the hospital after leading police on a crime spree that allegedly included a crime spree.

trish hartman tells the story from start to finish. >> it was here in the 5200 block of church road that police say the suspect started his crime spree. the victim's mother tells us the family was coming home from a christmas party and the car was filled with gifts and her diabetes medication. according to the victim, the suspect put a gun to her head and stole the rental car and took off. later, he was seen on surveillance camera with a gun to the employee in the store. hthe vehicle was found empty. when the suspect returned, the officers followed. >> they attempted to stop the vehicle. it came to a rest with a
