is the air temperature, 21 new york city, 11 syracuse 18 in pittsburgh. although the temperature is a little higher than yesterday those wind chills pretty biting in fact 13 right now is what it feels like in philadelphia, nine pittsburgh, one in syracuse and quebec canada 22 degrees below zero, so we are at least back into the teens after single digits of yesterday. snow is still set to arrive here tomorrow morning. storm tracker6 live double scan shows a little stretch of those snow showers it's a quick little clipper system, chicago to cincinnati and this will be racing off to the east as we get into the late overnight hours tonight and first thing tomorrow morning. in fact, this is what to expect. that snow begins at dawn tomorrow from the southwest to the north and east. the steadiest will be late morning into the noontime hour and then it tapers off tomorrow afternoon but there will be periods of slick travel in the morning and even in the afternoon with any untreated roadways that snow

will stick and still looking at about a coating to 2-inches of snow. then that intense cold comes in after and this is what we're expecting for new year's weekend. brutal here sunday morning, feeling like zero. dress for 5 degrees for the eagles game. if you're going there in the afternoon. the ball drop at midnight, 0 degrees. monday morning for the mummers, 0 degrees. and then monday afternoon, even still only feeling like 5 degrees. so, we'll chat about just how long this cold stretch lasts coming up in that full accuweather forecast, brian. >> all right, adam see you shortly. thank you. penndot has started treating the roads early today in hopes of preventing slick spots tomorrow. chopper6 spotted this crew on 413 in bristol township bucks county. you won't see any salt or brine being laid for the rest of the day because workers were sent home early so they can come back early in the morning. >> crews at the ready to go out and to spray salt down

"action news" caught trucks brining i-95 southbound near newport at the salt yard in christian ya' and in a crews are busy loading and double-checking their trucks. deldot is calling in its workers before 4:00 a.m. to ensure roads stay clear and safe for drivers. >> the frigid temperatures are top of mind for officials getting ready for new year's celebrations in philadelphia. but so is the safety of crowds of people who will gather for fireworks and the mummers parade. "action news" reporter chad pradelli now live for us on broad street. of course this is along the parade route and chad, you have details about the security precautions being put in place. >> reporter: sharrie, some of the security measures you can already see here up and along broad street. you have the sidewalk barricades here that go up and down the roadway. you know, philadelphia is accustomed to dealing with events like the mummers parade and the fireworks at penn's landing but in this ever changing world, they sometimes

have to adjust their measures. down broad is an annual tradition here in the city but as the performances evolve so, too, does security. treat their security but are keeping details close to the vest. you'll seaside streets off broad blocked and barricades along the route that stretches down broad street to city hall. >> you're going to see a lot of uniform patrol, plainclothes officers that you won't see. we have many layers of security and we expect it to be -- be a great event. >> reporter: surveillance will be extensive with crowds being monitored at the realtime center in south philadelphia. one new wrinkle a drone. for the first time police incorporate one similar to drone6, a sort of eye in the sky. >> they're very good for large events. you get an overhead view of the whole event. if something happens you can zoom in on exactly what the problem is maybe even before a police officer can get there. >> reporter: down at penn's landing, organizers have been

working with homeland security with tens of thousands of people possibly watching fireworks there, crowd safety and vehicles are a concern. >> we've added in a lot of concrete impediments into the entrances in places that people could potentially drive into. that was one of the things that homeland security really wanted us to do and something that we have done in the last i guess month. >> reporter: and with so many officers out on the roadways and out in the elements for the mummers day parade and for the fireworks at penn's landing, police say they are bringing in some warming centers. they will have those on hand so at times officers can get warm and then get back on the street and back on the line. i'm live along broad street in center city, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> all right, chad, police have a detailed plan. thank you. speaking of the mummers parade, "action news" caught up with the shooting stars fancy brigade this afternoon. they were putting the finishing touches on their elaborate futuristic costumes.

>> big factor is ice. and you know, water, cold, don't mix well. surgeons into ice and now we have slippery conditions. >> sadly the family's three dogs all died as a result of this fire. the house is considered a total loss today. investigators have not yet said just what caused this. meanwhile firefighters in pemberton burlington county went on the defensive as they battled a fire on the 400 block of pemberton bypass. crews safely evacuated the house then stayed a safe distance away. chopper6 was overhead as they doused the flames from a ladder and from the ground. >> the search is on for the person who opened fire on a man in chester today. police taped off the crime scene at the intersection of madison and upland streets. that's where they found a 22-year-old wounded. he was shot twice in the lower body and then rushed to the hospital. "action news" is told that they expect that the people -- this person will be okay. detectives in west whiteland township chester

pelman in the "action news" traffic center today. hey, matt. >> i think it's plenty cold here. i don't even want to think about minnesota. good afternoon to you brian and sharrie. in less than shocking news, we have some more disabled vehicles this afternoon. cars that don't want to run in these extremely cold conditions. one is here on the schuylkill expressway and a really -- in a really bad spot, it's westbound by university avenue which is a normal chokepoint in the afternoon. so, a little tough to see but it's there in the left lane giving us an extra heavy delay westbound past passyunk through the scene of that disabled vehicle near university avenue. also had a broken down vehicle along 95 northbound side by the betsy ross bridge. that one luckily is cleared out of the way. but elsewhere on 95 northbound in delco, we've got reports of a fuel spill and even though it's mostly confined to the shoulder, it is a little bit slow there. southbound in delco you've got big delays again this afternoon because of that that wicked sun glare that we're experiencing once again. have a crash on the main line in ardmore along lancaster avenue greenfield avenue there by the vw dealership. a crash on the pennsylvania

>> ♪ >> investigators in new york city now say it appears a young boy started that deadly fire that quickly engulfed a bronx apartment building. from the outside it doesn't look like much but inside is a horrific scene. 12 people were killed last night including young children. four others are in critical condition today. now, we learned today that the fire likely started when a three-year-old was playing with burners on a stove. officials say as his family evacuated their first floor unit the flames moved through their still opened door. the stairs you see here then acted as a chimney spreading the flames to the rest of the building so fast others had little time to react. >> we were told the boy had a history of playing with the burners and turning them on. and before -- before the

mother knew it, this fire had gotten a good hold in the kitchen. she said it was a lot of fire, a lot of smoke, grabbed the children and ran out. >> now, in the wake of this fire, officials are reminding in fact urging people who live in their apartments to close their front door as they evacuate. that will slow the spread of any fire. >> president trump hit the links with service members today in west palm beach. about 60 men and women from the u.s. coast guard were invited to play at trump international golf club. the white house says the president wanted to thank them personally for their service to the nation. and during his florida vacation, the president also granted an impromptu interview to the new york times. he says the russia investigation makes the u.s. look very bad but does not bother him and he believes special counsel robert mueller will be fair. now here is a look at today's closing numbers on this last trading day of the year. all indices down today with a selloff at the end of the hour and closing time today.

the dow jones closing down more than 118 points nasdaq down more than 46 points on the day, the s & p 500 closing at 2,673 points down, almost 14 points on the day but posting its best year since 2013. >> a woman already in police custody for stealing cars in michigan managed to get behind the wheel of a police cruiser. footage from inside the patrol car shows 21-year-old thornton climbing through the partition. officers say she somehow slipped out of her handcuffs and once in the front seat took off and nearly hit two officers. they finally got her back into custody after a chase that reached 105 miles an hour. she's being held now without bond. >> well, in santa barbara many students will finally be returning to school next week. they've been out of class since the wildfires started almost a month ago. workers are busy finishing a lot of the clean upwork there. they're clearing ash from areas like the playgrounds and parking lots on 20 different

campuses. all of the schools heating ventilation and air conditioning systems were also replaced. the city was impacted by the thomas fire which is the largest in state history. >> now to accuweather once again. meteorologist adam joseph as we look ahead to the long weekend for many and it will be a long weekend in a lot of ways, won't it? >> it will. i mean, because most people have off but also just the weather is going to really not cooperate every single day as we move forward here into the new year. as we take a look at sky6 live, one place that is enjoying this and the skiers and snow borders, they just bundle up. it doesn't faze them one bit that it's bitterly cold out there on spring mountain here in montgomery county, a good base has been put on with all the snow they were able to make over the last several days and then we'll get a little fresh powder on the slopes here tomorrow. in fact, right now as we look at wind chills, 13 philadelphia, nine allentown, eight reading, 10 in trenton, 15 in dover, 18 in cape may,

so yet another day very similar to the last few days and how it's going to feel as we push into the evening and overnight hours. notice that the wind chill does not drop off. in fact, it may come up a little bit at times and that's only because the winds are starting to really relax and they'll actually kick down to about three to 6 miles overnight tonight before they ramp up here sunday and monday. satellite and radar still a clear sky out there right now but we look to the west. there's our clipper system heading into the ohio valley right now, parts of the northern tennessee valley and that is what's going to ride by here starting first thing tomorrow morning. so, for tonight, it's quiet for all of your friday night plans, just turning cloudy. any snow will hold off until the predawn hours, 12 to 19 degrees with that wind switching out of the southwesterly direction very late tonight. future tracker showing that the snow is here 7:00 a.m. already falling allentown reading lancaster, dover to millville, even on the brink of philadelphia first thing in the morning and the steadiest

of this light snow and snow showers will be late morning into the lunchtime hour. this is noon as it's already starting to shut off to the south and west and it breaks apart going into the afternoon with just a lingering scattered snow shower around once we get into the midafternoon hours. and the last couple days we've been saying coating to 2-inches. that has not changed. as you can see the models in great agreement here anywhere between almost an inch to maybe a little bit more. this is for philadelphia and all those four different models, so again, not a lot of snow but a nuisance event trying to travel around, trying to maybe do some errands tomorrow. any road that is not treated is going to be snow covered even with a coating to 2-inches. as we look at the poconos, if you're thinking of heading up there for the weekend, try to find as many layers as you can. saturday tomorrow 20 degrees with that light snow. then on sunday, 14 but forget that air temperature. it's going to feel nearly five below zero the entire day up in the mountains on sunday. and then on monday, with a high of just 12 degrees, it

>> ♪ >> it's 4:30 and "action news" continues with an accuweather alert impacting everyone this weekend. >> yeah, this last weekend of 2017 not just cold, it is critically cold putting anyone not prepared to be outside in danger. we've got team coverage of the deep freeze across the delaware valley which is turning water into ice and sending new year's plans inside. let's begin with meteorologist adam joseph at the "action news" big board with the facts and frigid figures, adam. >> yeah, frigid indeed. and before we get to the heart of the cold air, we've got to get through a little bit of snowfall here as we start the weekend. storm tracker6 live double scan shows it is a weak clipper system here near chicago and saint louis. not a lot of moisture, again, cold air can't hold as much moisture as warmer air does, so this go round it's going to be a little touch of snow, nothing big but still going to be nuisance here to begin our holiday weekend. in fact, there it is right now on future tracker and as we speed up time late tonight during the day tomorrow, it aims right for the delaware

lehigh valleys down to washington and baltimore and it starts first thing tomorrow morning right on 6, 7 o'clock in the morning, the flakes will fly and then it will turn steadier and a little bit heavier right around lunchtime and then it's quickly out of here by about 2, 3 o'clock in the afternoon. by 5 o'clock, everything is off the coast, so it's really a morning event more than it is an afternoon event. temperatures, though, how it's going to feel, tomorrow afternoon, it's going to feel like one of the warmest days of this stretch, right around 23 degrees but also we're dealing with snow, already eight in pittsburgh by that .4 in buffalo and then the bottom drops out here going into sunday. sunday around lunchtime six philadelphia, eight in washington, eight below in buffalo and then as we head into the new year, new year's day in the afternoon, the best it could feel is five in philadelphia, one new york city, zero in syracuse, two in pittsburgh and we'll have much more on just how long this cold is going to last in that seven-day forecast coming up in just a little bit.

morris at dino's party center prepping for new year's takes three to four days. they inflate 15,000 balloons, most will decorate restaurants and banquet halls. they also have plenty of walk ins, scooping up hats and horns and those 2018 new year's glasses for home parties. >> happy new year. >> there you go. hundred pounds. we have members in the back totally covered in ice. >> both injured firefighters were treated at the scene. the fire marshal is still working to figure out a cause here. few hours before that, crews were dealing with a different blaze in olde city. shortly before 7:00 this morning firefighters responded to an apartment at third and chestnut to find smoke coming out of that building. they quickly got the upper hand on what turned out to be a small furnace fire. there were no injuries in this one. >> 2017 is coming to a close in philadelphia with a spike in the city's homicide rate. police say it's partly due to the opioid crisis. as of today there have been 314 homicides compared to 277 at this time last year. well, that's a 13 percent increase and the highest number in five years. police say the number overall shooting victims is actually down. there have been 58 fewer people shot so far this year. >> shooting victims, the number of people that are shot are down slightly, four and a

half percent but the number of people that have died as a result of those shootings has increased. >> philadelphia police are in the process of forming a gun violence task force to target the worst offenders. they've also introduced an intelligence bureau to improve information sharing and they've put more boots on the ground by increasing their bike patrol. >> state police are investigating a crash that caused a truck to overturn on i-95. the truck flipped after colliding with at least one car in the northbound lanes in tinicum township this morning. it was heavy damage to both vehicles involved here. authorities had to shut down two lanes of that highway as they cleared the scene. we're still working to find out if anyone was hurt as a result of this. >> we turn now to the excitement over the eagles. all season viewers have been sharing videos and photos celebrating the birds' winning streak. >> yeah, today we want to highlight a cape may county family who has turned monday's christmas game into a musical. >> ♪ fly eagles fly on the

scratchoffs as an early christmas gift for his waitresses. leslie underwood and her best friend/colleague mandy van hooten each took five tickets and started scratching offer. they hit it big. one of the tickets she scratched was worth $300,000. since they both were playing at the same time and worked the same shift, the waitresses agreed to split the prize evenly. but the very next day van hooten didn't show up for work. turns out she snuck over to the lottery office and claimed the jackpot for herself. underwood only realized what happened when she saw her friend posing for that lottery photo holding a giant check. well, she says she now wishes she would have listened to a warning from that generous boss who happens to be named lucky. >> he told us here at the bar he was like y'all won't be friends by the end of this and we was like why would you say that, you know? money changes people. now we see. >> wow. though van hooten is the only

afternoon. just an eastbound brake lights lighting up here near conscious hock as you head in towards the curve. travel time is double what it should be but we have seen worst afternoons on the schuylkill. the broken down vehicle we had westbound in university city has cleared out so the lanes are opened there. still a little bit slow coming west of vare. and that fuel spill on 95 northbound by 420 in delco has been cleaned up but southbound you still have slowing because of sun glare and volume headed down toward the commodore barry bridge. crash on the turnpike westbound past fort washington long gone now but still some speeds in the 20's coming west of willow grove and we had three earlier accidents in delaware, two of them on 95 southbound. all now gone but still speeds in the teens on 95 southbound and single digits other delaware memorial bridge coming into delaware. that's been busy each afternoon this week and this afternoon is no exception. again, not a good day for a water main break but we have one elsewhere in new castle county route seven at route two kirkwood highway by the

[laughter] >> good. >> bundle up. >> fashion throw it out the window for the week. it's all about keeping warm. as we take a look at the weather center here, live on sky6 over the temple university camera here, a nice friday evening if you're heading out there a little bit of a chill in the atmosphere but no precipitation and the clouds will be on the increase late tonight and that snow arrives first thing tomorrow morning. as we look at the numbers, 24 philadelphia, 21 in trenton, allentown, 20 degrees right now in reading. 25 in millville. doesn't seem all that bad considering we had wind chills yesterday in the single digits but then there is still a little bit of a breath in the air from mother nature and that is pulling those wind chills into the single digits to the north and west. right now that's how it feels on exposed skin. 10. in trenton 13, philadelphia beach haven, millville 14 degrees and cape may right now feels like 19 degrees. yes, we are talking about a little bit of snow and you can see it there on the radar. satellite imagery showing the clouds east into central parts

of pennsylvania. they'll continue to spill in after midnight tonight and then again that snow very narrow area of it and not going to last long but still will be a nuisance event here tomorrow. so, for tonight, turning cloudy and snow by dawn. 12 degrees in the suburbs, 19 for center city. with those winds switching from the northwest to the southwest, very light though three three to 6 miles an hour. future tracker showing for tomorrow clouds philadelphia to the north and east first thing in the morning at 6:00 a.m. but you can see those snow showers already falling lancaster county, chester county, parts of delaware and south jersey and then as we get into the late morning, early afternoon, that's the period of the steadiest of the snow here but it's already ending to the south and west and then quickly after lunchtime, everything will pull out to sea. there could be a lingering snow shower or maybe a quick snow squall with some colder air coming in with the actual core of the arctic air flooding in saturday night into sunday. and we're looking at a general coating to 2-inches of snow

here anywhere during the day tomorrow but the problem is every flake is going to stick. the steadiest will fall before midday and it will create some slick driving conditions even a coating to 2-inches can halt a lot of traffic and create some trouble here so just watch that especially tomorrow morning early afternoon. then for the eagles on sunday at the linc winds sustained 12 to 25, gust over 25 miles per hour. air temperature in the 20's will feel more like 5 degrees from start to finish in the game even in the afternoon. as we head into new year's evening, a bit cold outer cold t there. 8 o'clock in the evening when folks start to venture out 15 degrees the air temperature. midnight as the ball drops 12 degrees. heading to penn's landing for the fireworks bundle up because wind chills especially coming off that delaware river is going the feel like 0 degrees with wind gusts still near that that 25 miles

an hour range. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast accuweather alert for the next three days tomorrow because of the snow showers of 28 degrees and then those harsh wind chills sunday and monday, the entire day with those winds near 30 miles an hour both days. again, feeling between zero and five above, start to finish of the day. and then not as harsh here on tuesday. 25 degrees for a high temperature and then make some outdoor plans and specifications, maybe get a bathing suit on on wednesday a-balmy high of 30 degrees. 30 never looked so good. and then that storm we were chatting about yesterday looks like it's going out to sea at this point. we'll still watch it for thursday of 29 and then more cold air comes behind it as temperatures fall back to 24 on friday. so, at this point we will not touch freezing for the next week. >> yeah, that. warmer than yesterday. you think you're moving in the right direction and then we're going to go completely backwards here over the weekend. 24 right now the air temperature in philadelphia. eight in syracuse, 18 in pittsburgh and there still is a light wind out there and it doesn't take much of a wind to pull that 24 degrees down quite a bit. in fact, it feels like 13 right now in philadelphia, eight syracuse, nine in pittsburgh and between the teens to as much as 20 degrees below zero in northern parts of maine and southern parts of canada. we are tracking some snow for the upcoming weekend. it is a weak clipper system here near chicago, cincinnati. that is where this area of snow is right now and that will continue to make its journey eastbound and past through here starting first thing tomorrow morning and then going into the early afternoon hours and that will be the introduction to the harshest part of this arctic blast. in fact, snow begins near dawn tomorrow. the steadiest in the morning through at least lunchtime and then it tapers off in the

afternoon but it will create periods of slick travel especially on nontreated surfaces given just how cold every surface is so every flake will stick. then after the snow sunday morning, going to feel like zero with that wind chill. this is how you're going to want to dress for 5 degrees sunday afternoon when the ball drops at midnight, 0 degrees and the heart of it comes in monday morning for the mummers if you're heading out there in philadelphia or the suburbs, no matter where you are, five below zero will be the wind chill and then even on monday afternoon not coming up all that much, still feeling like 5 degrees. we'll take a look at the rest of that seven-day forecast brian coming up in a little bit. >> all right, adam, thank you.
