going up right behind me. now, how many people will come out to brave those frigid temperatures is anyone's guess but as we saw today the cold wasn't letting many stop them from enjoying one of their final days of their holiday. even though the deep freeze and continues for yet another day, many are still heading outdoors. the rothman rink in center city was packed with bundled up skaters this afternoon. the canuck family came from yardley to cure their cabin fever. >> we were cooped up all week. we figured out we would come out burn off some energy have some fun and enjoy philly. >> reporter: how you staying warm buddy. >> trying to get more layers on. >> reporter: like how many layers do you think you have on. >> three. >> reporter: at the christmas village snack tent the subfreezing temperatures mean. >> more hot chocolating hot cider coffee and tea. >> reporter: lined the counter the staff keeps warm by jockeying for time next to the heater. >> i've been pushing him to the side for the last five times. >> reporter: meanwhile in south philadelphia, crews are busy preparing sunday night's

fireworks displays. the cold isn't making the massive job any easier. >> you're doing a lot of work with the wire and you got to take the gloves off so we try to watch out for the frost bite and everybody tries to keep an eye on each other make sure everybody is doing good. >> reporter: the show is expected to go off like last year. organizers have said they've seen an upparticular for nearby indoor parties. >> there's dave and busters fringe arts, independence sea port museum and they have fantastic parties with the best viewing locations of the fireworks. >> reporter: the outdoor crowds along the river are expected to be smaller but will martin and beau wouldn't let a little cold make them miss the show. you'll be outside. >> 15 minutes we will, yeah. we're going to bundle up just like today, so... >> reporter: and that dog's coat good looking dog right there. well, adventure aquarium behind me as well as the spirit -- excuse me battleship new jersey will both be hosting new year's

celebrations two other alternatives for some indoor fireworks watching here at penn's landing. we are reporting live at penn's landing, jeff chirico channel6 "action news." >> thank you jeff. stay warm yourself. we're not expected to get a lot of snow tomorrow but penndot says it is ready for whatever we get. chopper6 over a penndot truck today as it put down brine on route 413 in bristol township bucks county. they actually started laying the salty mix yesterday. penndot has 100,000 tons of salt waiting and 182 state trucks at the ready. >> this storm -- timing on this storm is good in terms of it being a weekend and less volume on the roads. that will allow our crews to more effectively and efficiently treat the roadways. >> penndot asked drivers who do go out tomorrow please be on the alert for their trucks on the roads and keep a safe distance from that vehicle to allow plenty of time to stop on potentially slippery roads. keep up with any changes to the new year's eve forecast and the new year's day outlook for the mummers parade right on your phone or tablet.

the 6abc app is a free download for your mobile device. >> a home in burlington county sustained severe damage in a fire today. chopper6 was over the scene of this blaze in the 400 block of pemberton bypass. everyone inside did get out safely. the fire went to three alarms before firefighters got the upper hand on this. and so far no word on the cause. >> investigators in new york city now say a.m. child started last night's fire that killed 12 people in the bronx. they say a little three-year-old was playing with the burners on a stove. officials have just released dramatic new video showing the inside of that building today. we get the latest from abc's linda lopez. >> reporter: firefighters have finished searching the building and say all residents are accounted for. after what new york's fire commissioner called the deadliest fire in 25 years. other than 9/11. >> this fire started in the kitchen on the first floor. it started from a young boy three and a half years old playing with the burners on

the stove. >> reporter: commissioner nigro saying that the mother of the three-year-old who was playing with the stove was in another room and was alerted by the child's screaming. the fire quickly took hold in the kitchen, though the mother tried to get them all out. >> she exited her apartment with these -- her 22-year-old and three-year-old and left the door opened. so, this fire quickly spread up the stairs. >> reporter: the commissioner saying that the open stairways in the halls act as chimneys and the fire quickly spread to all the floors above. this man tried to escape with his children out the front door of his apartment but after seeing the thick black smoke, had to go back inside. >> then we went back to the fire escape and then i had to take my children one after the other to the apartment. >> reporter: and four of the 12 who died were all members of the same family. >> oh, jesus, four from one family, come on now. >> reporter: the fire

of 2017, monica and brian. can you believe it? had some good times on the roads this year but many more challenging times i would say and one of those challenging times is here this afternoon in camden westbound side of route 30 the admiral wilson boulevard it's an accident that's challenging us. it's taking out the left lane so coming away from the old airport circle as you head towards the ben franklin bridge it's a slow go with in left lane out of commission on the admiral wilson boulevard. also still watching overturned vehicle crash in willingboro burlington county. it's along 130 at vancouver parkway by the beneficial bank. if you're trying to come from south jersey over to delaware really slow speeds again this afternoon at the delaware memorial bridge. just 10 miles per hour. the commodore barry up in delco might be a better bet. also still have this water main break in new castle county along limestone at kirkwood highway by the national tire and battery and in delaware county this is i-95 where we had that big truck accident this morning. the truck flipped over on top of a car just after the morning rush. it was a mess here by 420.

satellite and radar clear sky right now. clouds will be on the increase after midnight tonight and then there's that hint of snow chicago, cincinnati and that's aiming our way as we get into our saturday so it turns cloudy late tonight, snow by dawn, 12 to 19 for that overnight low and not much of a wind chill tonight. winds really down between about three and 6 miles an hour. future tracker showing at 6 o'clock tomorrow morning, the flakes flying lancaster county, chester county, new castle county and then we'll quickly overspread the region here and a steady light snow 11 o'clock in the morning, pretty much area wide coating to 2-inches no matter where you are. the main steadiest of the snow, it is gone early to midafternoon. there could be some, you know, little hit or miss snow showers behind that late in the afternoon but still very good agreement. we've been talking about this for almost three days now. saying a coating to 2-inches and all models continue to kind of target that zone. i think most locations will pick up right around 1 inch and if you're heading to the

poconos, thinking fresh powder, skiing, snowboarding, a lot of layers will be needed. 20 on saturday with that light snow and then sunday wind chills five below the entire day on sunday and then for new year's day, 12 degrees as the air temperature but as you wake up in the morning, if you want to hit the slopes very early dress for 15 degrees below zero in the morning and five below zero for the afternoon. that five day at 5:forecast an accuweather alert the next three days. tomorrow because of the snow showers which will stick on the roads so definitely slow travel for your saturday morning early afternoon. and then for the eagles winds near 30 miles an hour, wind chills zero to five. for the mummers, winds 30 miles an hour, at least it's bright and sunny but wind chills zero to five and then any other as harsh on tuesday, 25 degrees. and wednesday we are warming it, maybe out of the 20's for an hour or two with temperatures still just slightly below freezing and then more reinforcing cold air comes in after that.

>> now to an accuweather alert. we are in for a chilly holiday weekend. we're going to get snow tomorrow and crews are already making preparations. sunday and monday, of course, going to be windy. you'll have to bundle up if you have plans to attend either the eagles game the fireworks or the mummers day parade. meteorologist adam joseph at the "action news" big board with the latest on all of this. >> not only dealing with the cold but also dealing with a little bit of snow. the snow first and then the brutal cold second. storm tracker6 live double scan shows that area of snow showers light snow chicago to cincinnati, this clipper system pushing in and as that clipper system departs, that's what's going to yank down the core of the cold behind it here for sunday going into monday. as we track it for you 5:30 here, there's the snow showing up on future tracker and again as we speed up time here, as we get into the morning hours tomorrow, that's when the snow starts. i mean, it is first thing in the morning even before the sun comes up over the horizon for philadelphia areas to the west, to the south even as far

south as baltimore and washington and then it overtakes the whole region late morning, early afternoon but really it's just after lunchtime that the steadiest of the snow is now off the coast as an ocean storm develops and we could just see a couple of flurries or a lingering snow shower behind it, again, as those stronger winds and the colder air comes in behind the system. in fact as we look at future tracker wind chills 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon may feel the warmest we've felt in quite some time. 23 in philadelphia, 29 in washington. ahead of that system you get a little bit of a southwesterly wind to pull in briefly somewhat warmer air but there's that cold air behind it. four in buffalo, eight in pittsburgh and that slams down here on sunday. sunday afternoon six in philadelphia during the eagles game. eight below buffalo, six below in syracuse. even richmond 14 degrees. and as we get into your monday, new year's day, wind chills five above in philadelphia, one in new york

"action news" reporter jeanette reyes has the story from the scene tonight. >> think this doesn't happen to you but it can. >> reporter: less than 24 hours ago the family called this house their home for what would turn out to be the last time. this morning, it is being boarded up, a total loss after a fast moving fire consumed the house along the 600 block of union avenue around 1 o'clock this morning.

>> i got slamming knock on my girlfriend's door by the neighbor. >> reporter: marcus miraglia lives in the home but happened to be staying at his governor's place when the fire erupted. his step dad mom and sister were and sound asleep but woke up just in the nick of time. his step dad ran outside. the two women headed to the roof of the home. firefighters arrived and rescued them quickly despite the raging flames and slippery conditions. >> big factor of course is ice and, you know, water, cold, don't mix well, turns into ice and now we have slippage and everything else so that's one of the one extremes that we do have. they'll come out and have salt and they'll salt the area for us. >> reporter: all three occupants were briefly hospitalized for minor injuries as well as a firefighter. the family dogs were rescued from the home but all three died hours later. >> she was so diligent with, you know, saving all of the memories and the photos and just everything. that's probably going to be the worst, material things come and go but to me just my

family's okay, that's all that matters. >> reporter: officials won't say where they believe the fire may have started but the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. reporting in delanco burlington county, jeanette reyes channel6 "action news." >> philadelphia police are still looking for the person who shot and killed a man in the city's spring garden section just before 9 o'clock last night. police got a call with a person with a gun. they went to the 1200 block of brandywine street and found a 39-year-old man in an apartment with a bullet wound to the neck. he was pronounced dead at the scene. no word on the motive. police in maple shade, new jersey, still have not released the name of a woman killed in the southbound lanes of route 73 near waverly road. she was struck by a car about 11:30 last night. the driver of the striking vehicle stayed there. the southbound lanes of route 73 were closed for more than six hours. and philadelphia police have now released surveillance video of two men wanted for an armed robbery in north philadelphia. these are the suspects right

before police say they went up to a couple walking in the 2100 block of west stella street. they demand everything they had. they also punched the man in the face. if you recognize these men, you're asked to call philadelphia police. >> well, we are just two days away from ringing in the new year and for those of you making the trek to times square to celebrate with, oh, a million other people you can expect very tight security. for the first time police were screening people going into restaurants and hotels in times square. there will be pilots flying over the area keeping an eye out for danger. snipers will be stationed on building rooftops. there will also be 10,000 cameras watching everyone's move. >> they'll be people from the state police, the fbi, there will be people from amtrak, from new jersey transit, from any agency you can think of that's going to be in that operations center that night. >> the goal is to make sure new year's is one to remember for all the right reasons.

along 42 southbound big delay coming off the walt whitman bridge because of a crash just up ahead by 295. two left lanes are blocked so this may not be your best way to get into new jersey this evening. i think i'd head up to the ben franklin bridge and then work your way over from there. elsewhere on 42 we had a car fire here in the northbound lanes by route 41, runnemede. they just turned the camera, so i think the fire's out now. looks like all the northbound lanes are reopened and for some reason the camera is reporting high humidity, which i don't think is true but we'll have to consult adam on that one. also crash in camden westbound lanes of the admiral wilson boulevard coming away from the old airport circle everything is reopened headed towards the ben franklin bridge. once you cross that bridge and get onto the vine street expressway, we're looking pretty good here in center city. little bit sluggish on the eastbound side but overall not too bad. if you're in center city tomorrow, keep in mind it's the last saturday when you don't have to feed the parking meter after 11 o'clock. free parking a after 11:00 east saturday during the

permission then crashed it. mia thornton was sitting in the back of the police cruiser when she turned into harry houdini somehow. she slipped off the handcuffs crawled into the front seat and took off. police chased her as she hit speeds of 105 miles an hour. the windows fogged up but she kept going until she crashed into a barricade an tree. thornton is now facing charges including grand larceny and resisting arrest. >> well two best friends are friends no more after a fight over a $300,000 lottery ticket. last friday leslie underwood's boss bought all the waitresses scratch off tickets and told them they needed to split any winnings. underwood took five tickets and her co-worker and best friend mandy van houten grabbed five as well. van houten scratched one of the tickets winning 300 grand. they discussed each taking half. they were going to claim the money together in the new year. van houten had other plans. she took the ticket cashed it

dig out from 5 feet of snow that fell since christmas. they know all about it. and in upstate new york crews have been using front end loaders to move mountains of snow. the weather taking a toll on travel at chicago's midway international airport here over 80 flights were canceled. not everyone is suffering through the cold, though. woodland hills california temperatures are in the 80's. how about that? doing some outdoor push-ups on the picnic tables. we can only dream about that. >> that's cruel. >> we thought we would throw that in by comparison. >> those people look way too happy. >> we're all headed out west, right. >> if only. you know, it's supposed to be cold in the winter but this kind of cold taking over this much of the country, i mean, that far below normal, pretty impressive this early in the winter season. typically january, february you see this. >> impressive meteorologically. weather center here. one can hope. sky6 there at city hall you can see the ice skaters out on the ice rink, the rothman ice rink. still everything very festive down at city hall but we are tracking a little snow to begin the weekend. but right now temperatures are in the teens to around 20 degrees for trenton, a little bit above that in philadelphia, millville, 25 right now in dover but we still have a little bit avenue wind out there so it feels like the single digits for allentown, reading and lancaster. 10 in wilmington. 14 for millville. 13 again in the city of philadelphia. as we take a look at satellite and radar, there's the system, it's very weak but nonetheless it's going to bring us a little messy bit of snow here tomorrow morning into the early afternoon. it's a quick hit of it but again, even a little bit of snow on a very cold ground will create quite a nuisance here for your saturday. future tracker showing 6 o'clock in the morning that's when the flurries start falling in the western suburbs and then it becomes steady calm and light right around

the mid to late morning, lunchtime hour at 12 o'clock, snowing across much of the region. but it's not long after lunch that that snow starts to fall apart and move off to the east and it's o a lng scattered flurry or snow shower later on in the afternoon. this snapshot of 4:30 looking like a coating to 2-inches of snow across-the-board here, most areas will pick up a fluffy inch. but every flake is going to stick with that steadiest before midday creating slick driving conditions on untreated surfaces but this is one of those snows that's going to be easy to remove off the car. if you have a broom, the sidewalk or bring out the leaf blower and just below your drive way with some of that snow, that's how easy you'll be able to remove it. then as we get into sunday for the eagles 1 o'clock, wind chills near 5 degrees the entire afternoon on sunday 'cause those winds will clock at speeds of near 30 miles an hour at times with air temperatures in the 20's and then as we ring in or say goodbye to 2017, and say hello to 2018, couple fireworks

cold are on tap for your holiday weekend. folks bundled up and braved the bitter temperatures for a stroll on the boardwalk in ocean city today. but the cold is settling in and ice has already begun to form on the delaware river. road crews busy this morning in preparation for the potential snowfall tomorrow. deldot's trucks were brining the southbound lanes of i-95 near newport. at the north district yard here in christiana trucks were being loaded up with salt ready to deploy as soon as the snowfalls.
