cold are on tap for your holiday weekend. folks bundled up and braved the bitter temperatures for a stroll on the boardwalk in ocean city today. but the cold is settling in and ice has already begun to form on the delaware river. road crews busy this morning in preparation for the potential snowfall tomorrow. deldot's trucks were brining the southbound lanes of i-95 near newport. at the north district yard here in christiana trucks were being loaded up with salt ready to deploy as soon as the snowfalls. "action news" reporter jeff chirico is looking into how the cold is affecting new year's plans. chad pradelli checking out security preparations and john rawlins has folks stocking up for their celebrations. but first let's get to that all important accuweather forecast. meteorologist adam joseph in for cecily tynan tonight. adam. >> yeah, it's been cold now over 74 hours below freezing here in philadelphia right now that number sitting at 22 degrees, 18 in pittsburgh, six in syracuse, zero up in

burlington vermont and again this cold goes way down to the south. you have to go actually into central southern parts of florida to kind of escape this winter chill but there is still a little bit of a wind out there so it feels more like 10 in the city of philadelphia, same for new york city, pittsburgh 10 degrees. that number up a little bit from this time yesterday but again, that coldest of air is still yet to arrive. as we look at storm tracker six live double scan if the cold is not enough for you we're going to get a little bit of snow. we'll whiten that ground tomorrow. it is a clipper system coming from chicago and cincinnati. not a lot of moisture, not going to last all that long but it is going to create a nuisance here to begin the weekend. in fact, that snow will start falling first thing in the morning, even before the sunrises west and south of philadelphia, the steadiest will come in during the mid, late morning hours around lunchtime and then it tapers off in the afternoon creating slick travel around especially on untreated surfaces and it's one of those very light fluffy snowfalls.

after the snow, then the core of the cold slams in here on sunday morning, it will be very bitter with wind chills near 0 degrees. for the eagles sunday afternoon, you want to dress for 5 degrees. that's how it's going to feel when the ball drops, 0 degrees and then the really intense part of that cold comes in for the mummers monday morning, five below zero and then monday afternoon only five above and we'll talk about another week straight, monica of temperatures below freezing coming up in that seven-day forecast. >> thank you so much adam. outside new year's celebrations of course will be down right cold. "action news" reporter jeff chirico live at penn's landing and jeff folks are going to be bundled up no doubt. >> reporter: yeah, just like they are today and just 48 hours this area behind me will be the site of the first of two fireworks displays. as adam said it is going to be colder than it is right now. it's anyone's guess how many

people actually gather for this yearly tradition. nonetheless today we found many folks out and about enjoying some of the final days of their holiday vacations. have you ever felt cold like this before. >> no. this is for sure the first time that i've experienced this cold. >> reporter: at penn's landing we found these women from brazil braving the cold and windy waterfront of the delaware river unwilling they say to let the deep freeze spoil their vacation. >> it's really, really cold but, i don't know, philly is beautiful so i think it's worth it. >> reporter: meanwhile at the christmas village in center city, robert burden and his daughter cara are among the hundreds who didn't let a little chill stop them from taking in the sights of the season. >> wanted to show her around some of the places that we would go to when i was younger. >> reporter: bundled up skaters packed the ice rink while others warmed up with hot chocolate. double layer ski mask. >> nice and warm. no cold in the ears. >> reporter: some visitors weren't as prepared. what did you forget. >> the hat.

[laughter] >> reporter: so what did you do. >> we bought one here. >> reporter: emma and morgan weren't alone. winter accessories have been selling like hot cakes at the bella you booth since the deep freeze arrived. >> it's great for hats gloves and scarves and people that forgot stuff or want something new that's cute. be fashionable while freezing. >> reporter: meanwhile in south philadelphia the bitter cold is making the tedious job of wiring fireworks for sunday night's shows even more difficult. one weather related change, special aquatic firewks won't be shot off the side of the barge onto the water. >> there's different areas around here with ice. if the shell hits that and bounces it could, you know, instead of going into the water and stop it could close to the crowd or what have you. it's a safety issue. >> reporter: well, we're told that tickets are going quickly for a number of indoor partiesn both sides of the river. we're told tickets, however, are still available. those indoor venues of course heated and will have better views we're told of these fireworks.

now, the fireworks will be set off both at 6:00 p.m. and at midnight. reporting live at penn's landing jeff chirico channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you jeff. now to "action news" reporter chad pradelli live in center city and chad, between fireworks celebrations and the mummers parade, law enforcement is gearing up for a busy weekend aren't they? >> reporter: yes, monica, but police are accustomed to securing big events. we've had the pope all sorts of major events. obviously you'll see a very heavy police presence. you can see the barricades have already been set up for the mummers parade but their many measures you won't see. philadelphia police stress there's no credible threat to the region but the department is ready for the mummers who strut down broad and the crowds that watch. >> we have officers our counter terrorism unit and other officers that spend every day planning for these events looking at what happens elsewhere, looking at best

practices, so we're always prepared. >> reporter: for the first time the department will deploy a drone similar to drone6 so spectators shouldn't be alarmed if they hear the hum above. >> they're very good for large events. you get an overhead view of the whole event. if something happens you can zoom in on exactly what the problem is, maybe even before a police officer can get there. >> reporter: surveillance will be extensive with officers watching from a mobile command unit along the par ride route and the realtime crime center in south philadelphia. this year the polar plunge has police concerned for officers working ng hours for the parade and fireworks at penn's landing. >> the one change we are doing this year just because of the severe weather is to have some warming stations wheref someone is getting cold we cseno warm up and then right back out on the line. >> reporter: recently there have been terror attacks using vehicles to plow into large crowds. local law enforcement have noticed and measures have been put in place for the fireworks

show along the river. >> we've added in a lot of concrete impediments into the entrances. in places where people could potentially drive into. that was one of the things that homeland security really wanted us to do and something that we have done in the last i guess month. >> reporter: and we've heard it before and police want the public to hear once more. if you see something, say something. i'm live in center city, chad pradelli channel6 "action news." >> monica. >> thank you chad. "action news" reporter john rawlins now joins us live from sugar houseaso in fishtown. the holiday weekend upon us of course and folks are making their final preparations to ring in the new year there. hi, john. >> reporter: hi, monica. indeed they are making those preparations and i think it's a safe bet to say that the forecast is a factor in what they're planning to do and where they're planning to do it. kathy scott overseeing the purchase of some adult beverages today. given the forecast she has no plans for being outside sunday night. >> oh, yeah, i'm definitely staying in the house.

you indoors we invite you to joins us for the annual new year's tradition right here on 6abc. ryan seacrest hosts dick clark's new year's rocking eve live from times square and our coverage begins for you at 8:00 p.m. sunday night. two firefighters were hurt battling a blaze in west philadelphia late today. crews were called to the 4900 block of chestnut street at 11:30 this morning. they arrived to find heavy comim the top floors of the row house. a hundred firefighters responded to the scene. the frigid temperatures made the fire fight an especially difficult one. >> we have ladders up to the roof. the roofs are just basically a skating rink up there. our members are trained in this but obviously it's very difficult for us to move around. we do have holes in the roof right now from where the fire ventilated and from our ventilation activities so we're taking extreme caution. >> two firefighters suffered minor injuries. officials have not yet determined what sparked it. coming up on "action news" tonight, rescuers brave frigid temperatures to rescue this dog that fell through a

>> 2017 saw a spike in philadelphia's homicide rate. as of today, police say there have been 314 murders compared to 277 at this time last year. that is a 13 percent increase.

it is the highest number since 331 killings were reported back in 2012. however, police say the number of overall shootings is actually down. as are rapes and gun robberies. philadelphia police are in the process of forming a gun violence task force to target the worst offenders. uno the dog is back on dry land tonight thanks to a massive rescue effort. uno fell through a partially frozen lake while chasing geese at carousel park here in pike creek delaware this morning. a number of rescuers responded to the 911 call made by owner rob. >> one of the water rescue guys got his big yellow suit on and he sort of scrambled out onto the ice and pulled him in. they put him in an ambulance to, you know, towel him off and keep him warm. then they said well, we can drive you to your vet. so he doesn't have to get out of the ambulance. so, he got an ambulance ride to the vet. >> how wonderful.

the vet gave uno the all-clear. he's okay. his owners will just have to keep watch over the next few days. they saluted master corporal kevin lane as he left the wilmington police department this afternoon. lane retired today after 20 years with the department. the ceremonial walkout was complete with bag pipes and salutes from his brother's and sisters in blue. >> ♪

h are as exciting as the moments you do. ke o >> eagles not taking anything for granted. >> no. and, you know, this is going to be a fun and very cold weekend for the eagles. how cold is it? so cold the eagles practice field is frozen and so they took things ross the street practicing on the field they hope is the spot that they clinch a franchise record 14 regular season wins on sunday. after holding a walk through inside the bb at the novacare complex all week, the birds took things to the linc where the ground underneath the turf is heated. doug pederson wanted nick foles and company to get atempee time is supposed to be 20's against the cowboys. this game doesn't really mean

anything so the question has been whether they'll play them or risk rust. starters will get in the game. >> the idea is to just to keep the st going. i don't want to, yourest -- no d then it's three weeks later that they're playing a game. i think that's foolish on my part so i want to make sure they stay into the moment. but at the same time i'll smart with how much they play how long they play. and go from there. >> count down to the fiesta bowl. penn state takes on washington. nittany lions held quite a spirited final practice out in the 75-degree weather. jealous? i am. >> yes. >> today they they sent the seniors out in style. they carried them off the field. quite a special tradition. despite earlier national title hopes penn state can still go outweigh big with a big time bowl win. losing the rose bowl last year still a monkey on their backs. >> it's an exciting game and

two greatrograms and i got so much rpect for cach pederson what he's been able to do in his career and i think it's going to be -- i oing to be a fantastic game. we had a fantastic game last year. and we're hoping that this one ends a little bit different. >> test against the best for the flyers who play at tampa bay. lightning 27 and seven have the top record in the league. hopefully flyers bounce back after last night. they had a few days off for the holidays. fell behind three-nothing to the panthers in the second. in the third shayne gostisbehere managed to get them within one with his eighth goal of the year. too little too late. they lost three to two their third straight loss. >> i think our urgency was a little off coming into this one. they came at us hard and we really didn't match it until last 10 minutes of the game and that can't happen so we got to, you know, be better. >> sixers also had a tough night out west last night. joel embiid for three at the end of the first quarter in

>> meteorologist adam joseph in for cecily. how low will we go? >> very low. below freezing for most of the time. wind chills the second half of the weekend and a little snow to throw in on top of that. >> why not. >> why not. take a look at the weather center. typically on a friday night going into a holiday weekend you would think a lot of people would be out skiing and snowboarding. life on live on sky6 in spring mountain maybe it's too cold. they have quite a bit of a base with all the snow they made this week with temperatures below freezing so it's there for your liking if you want and a little bit of fresh powder to add to this tomorrow. as we look at the accuweather forecast again light snow to start the weekend first thing tomorrow morning. and then those northwest winds will really kick up sunday right through the day on monday up to around 30 miles an hour and it's that that wind that's going to be extremely annoying here both of those days with the coldest temperatures linking with that that wind so far this winter season. and then that new year's eve

fireworks forecast, if you're heading out to penn's landing to watch them, there's a couple of rounds, one at 6 o'clock for the wee ones, 17 degrees but really got to bundle every extremity especially for the little ones. 17 is going to feel more like zero at 6 o'clock and the same thing for midnight, 12 degrees feeling like that goose egg of a temperature. as we take a look at the wind chills right now 10 philadelphia, the atlantic city airport so again if you've been out late this afternoon and you felt these numbers of 5 degrees reading, 11 wilmington, 10 in philadelphia, imagine it at least 10 to 15 degrees colder than this once we get into late sunday into monday morning. satellite and radar clear sky right now but there is a little hit of snow that's coming in from the ohio valley. a very weak clipper system, not a lot of moisture with it. but the clouds will be thickening up after midnight tonight. snow arrives prior to dawn in the western suburbs. 12 to 19 degrees for that overnight low with winds switching from the northwest

to the southwest three to 6 miles an hour. future tracker at 5:30 in the morning, still pretty quiet across much of the area but there you can see some of that snow arriving lancaster county southwestern chester county overspreads the region and a steady light snow mid to late morning. this is 11:00 a.m. picking up that coating to 2-inches and then it's gone by the early afternoon hours with just a lingering flurry or snow shower in the afternoon as some -- that cold arctic air starts to arrive after the storm departs. so, again, no matter where you are, you're watching expect a coating to 2-inches most areas picking up right around that inch. every flake is going to stick and the steadiest before midday so that is going to create some very slick driving conditions here tomorrow morning especially in the early afternoon. and then for that eagles game on sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., if you've been to a game you know in the linc that wind can funnel in and kind of wraparound, 30 miles an hour gusting at times. air temperatures in the 20's

but don't even pay attention to those. you want to dress for 5 degrees and the same thing for the mummers parade. winds gust to go 30 miles an hour. again, throw away these temperatures in the teens the entire day. dress for zero to five most of the day early in the morning could still be a tad below zero for the start of the parade. as we take a look at the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, snow showers on saturday, 28 degrees for the high. and sunday until monday, temperatures only in the upper teens to low 20's with those wind chills being the star of the show there between zero and five and then not as harsh come tuesday. 25 degrees and a balmy 30 here, still below freezing but getting close to it on wednesday and yesterday models were showing a nor'easter somewhere off the coast. today it's further out to sea. we'll still watch it but at this point, dry, 29 and then more cold air comes in behind that. >> okay. >> for friday and next weekend
