right now on "action news." snow is falling across the area. this is a live look at philadelphia international airport. you will want to call ahead before you head out the door. this is a liberia look from our temple university -- as live look from our temple university camera. the snow may be to blame for a crash on the schuylkill expressway in montgomery. pennsylvania state police are asking the public to stay home until the snow stops and avoid the schuylkill expressway altogether. meteorologist chris sowers jones us outside for how long the snow lasts. how much falls when all is i had said and done, it is a quick mover. >> reporter: temperatures are sy sticking. if the system was moving slower, snowfall totals would be higher than expected. the tail end is pushing through parts the area now. you can see one little band over philadelphia and another band to

the south over the delaware bay region. we'll zoom into the northern band. mainly north of center city west chester, jenkintown and willow grove it's a moderate snowfall that's indicated by the brighter white that's starting to pop up. it extends eastward on the other side the delaware valley in places like florence and north of the wrightstown area and moderate snow reported in trenton. the wider view shows, this is the first band in the process of pushing through now. there's another band out to the west. that has to swing through, let me let this ambulance go by real quick. okay be once that swings through, that will be the last of it here. we're looking at a steady snow, maybe snow showers after that, everything winds down after 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. 14 in kutztown, 17 in pottstown, malvern icy cold 18. 19 in center city. 19 in media. glass borough, 17. vineland, 17 and smyrna, 19.

here's the call from accuweather, we're looking at light snow through lunchtime or one p.m. and things wind down, 25 degrees by 10. noon, 26. 2:00 p.m., 27 that's the forecasted high for the day. talking about the cold it will get much, much worse over the next 24 to 48 hours. the headlines look like, light snow, slippery roads, i can tell by looking at city avenue, southbound it's clear. northbound behind me, heading into schuylkill expressway it's completely covered. so monument is covered. a lot of secondary roads are treacherous, as well. when i come back in just a few minutes, i'll let you know when all this ends how much snow to expect in your area and we'll talk about another bitter arctic blast in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. nydia. >> the snow causing major problems, thank you. breaking this morning, snowy slick roads may be to blame for a crash that has the schuylkill expressway shut down in both directions in montgomery county.le crashed

happened along the westbound lanes near west conshohocken. no word on injuries at this time. again, all lanes on i-76 are closed between the glad win exit 337 and p-a23 conshohocken exit, 332. penndot is monitoring the snowfall and the impact on the roads. on the phone is bob kent thank you for joining us. >> you're welcome. >> reporter: we have an accident shutting down parts the schuylkill expressway what can you tell us about that and other conditions this morning. >> conditions, the schuylkill expressway has been the challenges part this morning. westbound west of gladwyn all lanes are shut down due to a multi-vehicle accident there. eastbound, west of the gladwyn on-ramp we have a left lane closure while emergency responders help address that situation. before conshohocken, there was another crash and then we had

something else west of gulph mills, the road was closed briefly and right now we're told that the left lane is getting by there. right now, though, crews are actively treating roads, but certainly when incidents like this occur it leaves our crews in certain situations like this because we're, our guys are inhibited terms of getting to the roads, the highways are impact. it's creating a log jam in that sense. we are out there with100,000 poe 182 state trucks and 190 contractor trucks. out there, the bitterly cold temperatures with the snow, snow adheres to the road immediately and created tough

travel conditions this morning, but our guys are out there an we're doing our best to plow where necessary and salt. >> we can't say it enough, chris and i have have been talking all morning how easy it is to let their guard down because it is not a big amount of snow. people need to be extra careful and take their time and avoid the schuylkill expressway right? >> the schuylkill expressway right now i would use an i woult that. the tow trucks have to get in there and tow the cars out of there and get the roadway clear so our vehicles can net in there and -- can get in there and get the salt down and clear the roadways. you were giving good advice, motorists if they can delay their travel they should. use caution and reduce speeds

and watch following distance between themselves and the car in front of them. situations are not ideal. like i said it may not be snowing a lot, but the road conditions, the roads are slippery and we advisory motorists to use common sense and avoid distractions and buckle up. >> i know you're doing your absolute best, but it will be sometime before the schuylkill expressway is reopened and cleared. >> state police, our crews are coordinating with state police. they are getting the tow trucks in there to get the vehicles out of there and handle any kind of emergency situations that need to be handled by the emergency services, as soon as that is done we'll get in there and do our thing. there be a delay in the area of schuylkill expressway. >> this is not the only accident on the schuylkill expressway. we have two or three other incidents this morning, correct? >> yeah, we had gladwyn, i

mentioned, as well as one around conshohocken and gulph mills. there are three that i am ray aware of, but certainly anywhere -- anyone thinking about traveling the area of the schuylkill expressway think about using an alternate route. >> at least it's saturday, if this was the weekday rush we could be in trouble. >> i agree, totally, nydia. if this was a weekday rush hour, it would be much worse. because of the timing of the storm we expected less volume on the road. that allows the crews to clear the highways more effectively and efficiently. certainly with an accident like this and causing a backup it allows the snow to accumulate on the roadway and creates a delay for the crews to get in the area.

it's creating icy conditions on the roads. we just talked tokent saying thg everything they can to clear it and get the plow trucks in and get the schuylkill expressway reopened. this is not the only accident on the schuylkill expressway right now him there are three or four accidents total in the area. you need to avoid the schuylkill expressway altogether if you can, certainly this stretch between gladwyn exit and route 23. the snow is pretty, but it's creating serious traffic troubl. >> reporter: this is part of the reason why we issued the accuweather alert, it was never for the amount of snow we were forecasting, it was because temperatures were so cold with the brine and the salt everything being down on the effective as it normally would be because when temperatures are this cold that's what happens. temperatures are in the tns tee. we're starting to see the problems on the roadways, we'll continue to see the problems over the next couple of hours,

before things let up a little bit after lunchtime. in the meantime, there's the view, philadelphia international airport, not snowing as heavily as it was an hour ago, but coming down steadily at this point. lighter snows across western portions of south jersey. let's go over to the radar now, we have a band that's running parallel to the pennsylvania turnpike. we'll see somewhasouth of theres another band across south jersey him we'll make a zoom that will be in the northern band. the set up across south jersey for the most part this is very light fluffy snow falling, the gray representing probably a couple of flurries or more than that where you're seeing the brighter whites that's where the heavier snow is falling. we have a band across burlington county and another band north and west of philadelphia. that's the one running parallel to the schuylkill expressway. if you live anywhere from the just south of phoenixville, downingtown and exton all the

way into willow grove and horsham. the snow is coming down at a good clip that crosses the river into south jersey and right through trenton and over the coast of monmouth county. this is the band where we're seeing heaviest snow. it's falling in malvern, radnor lansdale and limerick. here's a look at the wider view, again, we have this one band here, there's a break that's followed by another band. that's the last of it. this will push through over the next couple of hours. once that pulls through all the snow shut off, it will be cloudy most of the afternoon. icy cold, temperatures today get no better than the mid 20s which is where we were over the last several days. it's only 19 in philadelphia. dewpoint, 14. winds out of the south at 5 miles per hour. the pressure is falling from 30.13 inches. lots of teens north and west. 15 in kutztown. 17 in pottstown. 18 in kirkwood.

16 degrees presently in quakertown. even in south jersey, look at all the teens showing up here. glassboro, vineland, hammonton, 17. cinnaminson, 18. trenton, 19. smyrna sitting at 20. future tracker 6, again, the general idea is from 12:00, 1:00 p.m. most of the snow hits the coast and works out to sea. maybe a couple of leftover showers. this is the arctic boundary that pushes through the day, 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. with that boundary that pushes through you'll see an additional snow shower or snow squall. you can see the purple in the lehigh valley. maybe that coats the grounds quickly ten, 15 minutes worth and it works off the coast. from that point on it's bone-chilling air drive -- driving into the heart of the delaware valley. we'll have snow covered roads and icy patches and slick spots.

here, let's go outside to meteorologist chris sowers, chris you've been warning people the snow will create treacherous driving conditions.roem with a light snowfall we're seeing right now, people let their guard down. as cold as the temperatures have been, we knew this would stick immediately. we knew that the brine and the salt would have a slower impact on the snow. that's why we issued the accuweather alert, the combination of the cold and the snow creating problems on the road. city avenue is cleared, they have done a wonderful job. the snow let up on city avenue. you don't have to go too far to the north to get into a steadier band. you start moving into places like phoenixville horsham, willow grove, some of the locations over two inches now, it's light fluffy snow so it

accumulates quickly. where we're seeing the brighter colors that's where the snow is coming down to are a moderate to a heavy clip. it's running parallel north of exton into areas south of trenton in south jersey, the wider view shows this is the first round. there is another batch of snow showers out to the west across central portions of pennsylvania, harrisburg, gettysburg, those areas picking up snow showers. that will pull through in the next couple of hours. once that hits the coast, that will be it, the snow will b day. 17 in pottstown, 18 in malvern. 19 in newtown, icy cold 19 in center city. glassboro, 18. claymont,rtescue, checking in a. forecast for today, snow continues on and off until 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. it is mainly cloudy and cold from that point on. 27 degrees is the forecasted high with the wind which is not too terrible at this point. it will make it feel cooler than

if you can hold off longer, it's safetiest to venture out after lunchtime. it's almost 10:00 a.m. we're looking at a a couple of more hours. the live shot from that view, the roads are wet. the snow is easing up in the city. you go farther to the north it's coming down at a good clipper. let's go over to storm tracker 6 live. what we're seeing is a band that developed an hour and half agates not moving north of the schuylkill expressway. we're zoomed into lower montgomery county, so it is this area right here, north of exton extending along the schuylkill expressway and the pennsylvania turnpike. all wait through willow grove and horsham and trenton area. let me pan over here, so you can get an idea into south jersey. again, it is this band right here that is producing the heaviest snow at the moment here, langhorne look at the purple showing up. willow grove, jenkintown, willow

grove, horsham, florence and bristol all see snow at this point. let's go farther out here. see we're showing the lighter shades of gray. that would represent very light snow or just flurries at this point. now it's steady, but it's on the lighter side. places like glassboro, woodstown and bound in a -- buena seeing light snow. the back edge is into western porks of new castle county. baltimore washington, d.c., it's not doing anything. all this is pushing east 20 to 25 miles per hour. here's the wider view. you can see there's another round still to come over south central portions of pennsylvania, much lighter, though. it's not as steady. broken up as snow showers. once that pushes through over the next couple of hours that will be it. the system will be done, it will hit the coast and everything will start to quiet down and calm down. we'll see mainly cloudy skies, there can snow showers, isolated
