firefighters were called overnight after residents heard an explosion and noticed smoke. >> around 2:30 a.m., i started hearing like a lot of loud noises near my window, basically sounded like fireworks. and i am just thinking nothing of it. the lights went out, so i'm like, maybe it's something wrong with the electric activity. i began to light -- electricity. i began to light candles in my kitchen, all of a sudden the neighbor is banging on my door, i thought something is wrong. he said it's an electric i ial . nothing warned us, no smoke detecters, nothing went off. >> when firefighters arrived they ripped open part of the roof in search of flames. they found smoke, the build was evacuated and power was cut off to the other buildings. the red cross said 84 apartments were evacuated.

strahle street. some of the homes have to contend with feet of the water as we deal with bitter cold temperatures. that pose as problem with icing. jeanette reyes joins us live with the details. jennette. >> reporter: well, good morning to you both, they say going to be a rough way to end the year for distance of homeowners, take a live look behind me we're on the bottom part of the hill where the homes are lining the street. a water main break was reported an 8-inch broken main on strahle street in fox choice. 25 homes are without water. it is on the right side of the screen the homes on the right side are being impacted, many seeing feet of water in their basements, having their belongings floating in the frigid water. it will be costly to clean it up. take a listen to what homeowner has to say about all this.

>> my son sleeps down, he lost everything, clothes, shoes, jewelry, watch, even losts wallet in there, everything is floating. >> reporter: now, edward flores who you just heard said this is the second time it happened, it happened a couple of years ago. this time around according to to him he and several homeowners called the water department saying there was a leak back on thursday they were supposed to come out and clean it up, they say it has not happened. at this point they are dealing with several feet of water. they were planning on celebrating in their homes, they will have to go to their relatives homes while this is clean up. we'll hear from officials on what happened and what the time frame is to clean this up. we'll have a live report at noon today. reporting live in fox chase, jeanette reyes channel 6 "action news." >> what a nightmare. now to our bitterly cold

hearing loud noises near my windows. it basically sounded like fireworks. i started thinking nothing of it. the lights went out, i thought there was something wrong with the electricity. i began to light candles in my kitchen, all of a sudden my neighbor is banging on my door, i'm like there is something wrong. it's an electrical fire. nothing warned us, no smoke detecters nothing went off. >> when firefighters arrived they had to rip open part of the roof in search of flames. fortunately they only found smoke. the building was evacuated and power was cut off at the complex as -- complex' other buildings. many huddled under blankets until septa buses came to take them to yeadon borough home. it is believed that the
