firefighters were called overnight after residents heard an explosion and noticed smoke. >> around 2:30 a.m., i started hearing like a lot of loud noises near my window, basically sounded like fireworks. and i am just thinking nothing of it. the lights went out, so i'm like, maybe it's something wrong with the electric activity. i began to light -- electricity. i began to light candles in my kitchen, all of a sudden the neighbor is banging on my door, i thought something is wrong. he said it's an electric i ial . nothing warned us, no smoke detecters, nothing went off. >> when firefighters arrived they ripped open part of the roof in search of flames. they found smoke, the build was evacuated and power was cut off to the other buildings. the red cross said 84 apartments were evacuated.

strahle street. some of the homes have to contend with feet of the water as we deal with bitter cold temperatures. that pose as problem with icing. jeanette reyes joins us live with the details. jennette. >> reporter: well, good morning to you both, they say going to be a rough way to end the year for distance of homeowners, take a live look behind me we're on the bottom part of the hill where the homes are lining the street. a water main break was reported an 8-inch broken main on strahle street in fox choice. 25 homes are without water. it is on the right side of the screen the homes on the right side are being impacted, many seeing feet of water in their basements, having their belongings floating in the frigid water. it will be costly to clean it up. take a listen to what homeowner has to say about all this.

>> my son sleeps down, he lost everything, clothes, shoes, jewelry, watch, even losts wallet in there, everything is floating. >> reporter: now, edward flores who you just heard said this is the second time it happened, it happened a couple of years ago. this time around according to to him he and several homeowners called the water department saying there was a leak back on thursday they were supposed to come out and clean it up, they say it has not happened. at this point they are dealing with several feet of water. they were planning on celebrating in their homes, they will have to go to their relatives homes while this is clean up. we'll hear from officials on what happened and what the time frame is to clean this up. we'll have a live report at noon today. reporting live in fox chase, jeanette reyes channel 6 "action news." >> what a nightmare. now to our bitterly cold

temperatures it's difficult to get warm and stay warm if you're outside today. this is the coldest temperatures we've had to deal in nearly a temperature. looking live at the camden waterfront. it looks nice outside, if you're planning to be outside to watch fireworks or heading out for new year's celebrations, layer, layer, layer. >> we have an accuweather alert because of the dangerously cold temperatures and meteorologist chris sowers is outside grinning and bearing it. >> reporter: i'm ready, are you ready? pittsburgh, buffalo, 5 degrees, that's the overnight low in several locations across the outlying suburbs. philadelphia dropping down to 8 or 9. you get into the rural areas, williams town, pilots, allentown -- pottstown, allentown, 5 degrees, the closer you go to the lehigh valley zero. syracuse, 1. 20 degrees in washington, d.c. south into richmond, virginia icy cold 23. nine in slatington, two in lake harmony. kutztown nine. pottstown, 12, malvern, 14. glassboro, 16. ewing 15. blueberry country, 17. claymont 14 degrees. but again, here's what hits when you step outside, the windchill in philadelphia is zero, and it is not going to get much better than that throughout the day. we'll see windchill values ranging between 5 above and 4 below. 2 below in reading and 3 below

in lancaster. forecast for today, highs in the teens we're shooting for an optimistic high of 20, but we're not sure we'll hit that. lunch time, 17. 2:00 p.m., 19 degrees, here's a look at the windchills throughout the day. single digits just about every hour. when i come back in just a few minutes and i try to warm up here, i'll let you look at the temperatures, the numbers to expect as you ring in the new year. it's worse for the mummers day parade tomorrow. i'll have the details in the seven-day forecast, straight ahead in ten minutes. >> more on the developing news this morning. people in 84 apartments in delaware county are out of their homes right now forced into the bitter cold air by fire overnight. the action cam was ons the scene at the forest creek apartments on the 300 block of north front street in yeadon. firefighters were called after residents in one building heard an explosion and noticed smoke. >> around 2:30 a.m., i started

hearing loud noises near my windows. it basically sounded like fireworks. i started thinking nothing of it. the lights went out, i thought there was something wrong with the electricity. i began to light candles in my kitchen, all of a sudden my neighbor is banging on my door, i'm like there is something wrong. it's an electrical fire. nothing warned us, no smoke detecters nothing went off. >> when firefighters arrived they had to rip open part of the roof in search of flames. fortunately they only found smoke. the building was evacuated and power was cut off at the complex as -- complex' other buildings. many huddled under blankets until septa buses came to take them to yeadon borough home. it is believed that the

transformer box shorted out causing the fire. new from overbrook section of philadelphia. action cam at the scene of the 6100 block of landsdown avenue. when crews arrived they were told someone was trapped in the front bedroom on the second floor. firefighters ran a ladder to the second bedroom and worked through the flames to reach the 43-year-old victim. they carried him down the ladder he is in critical condition. a firefighter is being treated for a leg injury. no word on where a caused the fire. eagles and cowboys will be playing in cold conditions at lincoln financial field in south philadelphia. eagles fans will spend the morning outside the stadium, tailgating and they will move inside to watch the birds play. of course it's an open stadium, of course, it's going to be a cold one all around folks. game time real feel conditions will be the coldest in the

it will not get much better than that. that's the number from start to finish. it's an arctic invasion a reinforcing shot from the cold we had last week this is an arctic high that comes straight from the pole and drops straight done. this area here, the core of the cold does not make it into the delaware and the lehigh valleys. if you think it's cold right now, some of the windchills in the pocket are 45 to 50 below. this is impressive stuff for this part of the country. 20 for the high, 18 in reading, 17 in allentown, 22 in millville. overnight tonight, are you ready for this, 6 in millville, 6 above this trenton. 2 above in allentown, 3 for reading and lancaster. 9 decreases in philadelphia. you factor in the winds, it will feel much worse than that. future tracker 6 showing windchills by lunchtime, zero to five above for everybody. in the evening hours, one to five above for everybody. poconos look at that, 14 below.
