tynan. cecily, what's the story? >> jim, what a way to start the new year. these were the air temperatures this morning. reading a record low of 0 degrees. trenton three. philadelphia 6 degrees, which is 2 degrees above our record low for the date. wilmington five. the atlantic city airport four. but of course we have the breeze, so wind chills were stuck below zero and our highs struggled to hit 20 degrees today. that's our third coldest new year's day on record. and a full 21 degrees below average. believe it or not there's even colder air waiting in the wings later this week. right now the wind chill makes it feel like seven in philadelphia. and there's a broad area of arctic high pressure and this is bringing wind chills below freezing as far south as jacksonville florida, even dallas the current wind chill is 20 degrees, so we are not alone now future tracker showing as we head through the week, the freeze will ease. by wednesday morning, at 7:30 the wind chill 11 degrees.

that's cold but it's not nearly as harsh as it has been. but on wednesday, into thursday i am tracking a low pressure that will be developing off the east coast and that has the potential to bring us significant snow depending on the track. i'll have details on that and talk about record cold for the weekend coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. jim. >> thank you, cecily. an apartment complex along the 9600 block of ashton road in northeast philadelphia has been without power since overnight. "action news" reporter chad pradelli has more on how residents are coping with the brutally cold weather. >> reporter: charred underground transformer was dug up around 1:00 this afternoon nearly 12 hours after it blew at victoria woods in northeast philadelphia. mark weaver arrived home shortly after the power went out. >> it got colder and colder as the night progressed but we had comforters and her jacket

and my jacket and everything so we roughed it out. it worked out. >> reporter: initially others like the sunnies had no idea their apartments lost power: how did you stay warm overnight. >> we didn't realize the power went out at night. >> reporter: you didn't even know. >> no. and then it started to get colder and everything stopped working so then we started to realize. >> reporter: but as the day progressed and repairs dragged on, weaver and the sunnies decided it was time to leave. >> really cold. unbearable. >> reporter: so you guys can't stay in there any longer. >> no. >> reporter: where are you headed? >> to the mall. >> reporter: stay warm there? >> yeah. >> reporter: overnight a septa bus was brought to the scene to serve as a warming station. the apartment complex also suffered a broken water main but management says no units have lost water. and most residents are staying with friends and family until power is restored. and here within the last couple of hours, peco crews have restored power to the victoria woods apartment complex. residents can return home.

they now have heat. in northeast philadelphia, chad pradelli, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, chad. the mummers are nothing if not hardy and they proved that again on this new year's day. the stands may not have been filled as single digit temperatures welcomed the start of the mummers parade but nothing could freeze out this philadelphia tradition. live at 15th and market is "action news" reporter bob brooks. happy new year to you, bob. >> reporter: hey, jim, happy new year and even though it was extremely cold it was no lack of spirit for the 2018 mummers parade. take a look behind me here. right here on market, you can see the cleanup process is under way. we're actually standing right next to a street sweeper. i'll tell you what despite the cold weather, everyone did have a ton of fun. let's take a look and listen. >> ♪ >> reporter: yes, it was cold out. and there was nothing the parade nor spectator could do about it so instead it was

embraced. >> happy new year. >> reporter: the 2018 mummers parade offered it all, the string bands. >> ♪ >> reporter: wenches comics and fancies. even a skilled drum band. >> ♪ >> reporter: in a brave, brave dance troupe who didn't change their routine just because market street felt frozen. was it cold out there. >> yes. >> reporter: how did you do it? >> i don't know. i just did it. >> reporter: there's no doubt the extreme cold created some challenges. now that we're out here in the cold it's going to be rough to keep horns from freezing. >> reporter: string bands had no plans to finish their route short. how long do you think you'll march for. >> we're supposed to go to washington avenue so. >> reporter: you're going to give it a whirl. >> we'll give it a whirl. how is it playing in the cold out here. >> doesn't bother us at all. every day keep going and going and, hey, have fun. >> reporter: as always they were over the top entertaining. from young and old everyone seemed to have fun. you can't forget the loyal

hartman is lie in the satellite center with the full story. trish. >> reporter: jim, officials have not released the names of those on board to crew members from costa rica and 10 americans but we are learning on that plane were two families with ties to our area. this is what was left of the single engine plane that went down in costa rica on sunday killing all 12 people on board. according to the family's synagogue the steinberg family from new york was on the plane. irene and bruce and their three sons zachary william and matthew were killed. william was a freshman at the university of pennsylvania, according to a facebook group for the class of 2021. part of a post published today reads "many of us knew will very closely. he was such a wonderful person who left penn with an amazing smile every day. together we mourn the death of a friend a peer an promising scholar who would have went on to change the world ." he was an earn for the american jewish committee in west chester new york.

we spoke to william's supervisor a fellow penn alumnus. >> i know he was excited. it was something we shared in common that he was going to penn my alma mater. i was happy to have him as my intern and sort of be fostering a future penn student. >> reporter: the other passengers on board were the weiss family confirmed to the associated press by the family's rabbi. he says hannah weiss died in the crash along with her and parents and her brother ari. property records so the weiss family lived in the philadelphia area until 2004 with properties listed in plymouth meeting lafayette hill and norristown. now the university of pennsylvania has yet to put out a statement confirming that william steinberg was a student there. as for the cause of the crash that is still under investigation. reporting live in the sat center, trish hartman channel6 "action news." jim. >> thank you, trish. of course the world news tonight with david muir will have more on the investigation into the crash. that is next at 6:30 right after "action news." coming up on "action news"

>> there was no issue with mummers marching in the frigid weather this morning. the only concern was about their musical instruments. could the temperatures get the better of the horns and the banjos? well, "action news" reporter john rawlins was up bright and early to find out. >> reporter: south philadelphia 6:40 a.m. outside it's 9 degrees. inside the quaker city string band clubhouse 66 musicians getting into costume and makeup. the theme this year, fiddling with history. a nod to fiddler on the roof. the big question how will 33 play down the line. >> that's the tough part, how long will you be able to play before they actually freeze up. we don't know. we're going to go out there and experiment. >> reporter: the big concern this morning the saxophones, warm moist breath and very cold metal not a good combination. it requires constantly drying the inside of the instrument. >> the biggest issue is when

in our area, it was just a delightful start, first up little declan came into this world 54 seconds after midnight at virtua voorhees. he wasn't alone. six seconds later aliyah love louis was born at coop yourer university hospital in camden. she weighed 5 pounds 10 ounces 18 and a half inches long. while aliyah is a new year's baby she was late. her mother said she was due last thursday but either way, she says the birth was magical. >> the clock on the wall and the clock on the tv said 12 o'clock but one of the monitors in the room said 12:01 so it was like no, she was born at 12 o'clock, no she was born at 12:01 so it was just like this is my new year's baby. it doesn't matter. >> aliyah joins big sister six-year-old neha and finally there is baby levi. he was born at abington memorial hospital at 12:40 this morning. at 8 pounds 6 ounces.

could get snow on thursday. >> no. >> happy new year. >> happy new year to you, too. thanks a lot, you know. >> let's go live on sky6. now, this is where they like the cold air, the ski resorts. we are live on sky6 taking a look at spring mountain ski resort where the lights are on, the fire is blazing and there are a few snowboarders and skiers out there braving the cold. now, i shared this photo that chris posted on my facebook page from villas, new jersey, showing the delaware bay, a lot of ice, freezing over thanks to the deep freeze that we are in. and there's more cold air to come. so, the accuweather highlights show you the next two days it stays cold, below freezing but not quite as harsh as today. then i'm tracking a possible nor'easter on thursday and behind that system we get even colder air for the weekend, possibly record cold on saturday and sunday morning. sole, right now it's pretty cold out there. 18 degrees in philadelphia the air temperature, our high only 20.

the third coldest new year's day on record. allentown 13. trenton 16 and cape may 20 degrees. but of course we all know it's not just the air temperature, it's the wind chill. if you take a look, it feels like seven in philadelphia right now. two in allentown. one in lancaster. feels like 7 degrees below zero in the poconos. now, the good news is the winds will be diminishing overnight but the cold air is going nowhere fast. satellite and radar showing the broad area of high pressure, it's keeping us dry but this is arctic high pressure, so this is keeping us in the deep freeze. so, tonight clear skies, great viewing for the supermoon. the first one of two this january. the next one is january 31st. it will appear 6 percent bigger and 14 percent brighter than your average full moon. it's already risen really bright and beautiful. 11 in philadelphia, six in allentown. wilmington nine. cape may 16. but the wind chill dropping down to zero to 5 degrees below zero. so, future tracker showing 7 o'clock tomorrow morning

when a lot of people are heading back to work, kids heading back to school, the wind chill 1 degree below zero in philadelphia, six below in reading. as we head around lunchtime, wind chills generally in the single digits and by the afternoon, they'll be rising up into the teens. so, still very cold but again, not as harsh as today. then on thursday, this is what i'm tracking. there's low pressure that will really be exploding across the northern bahamas, a significant storm but where does it track? that is the key question. if this low pressure tracks close to the coast, this means several inches of accumulating snow. but some models bring it a little bit farther to the east. if that happens, that snow would just brush the shore. still getting in new information and i will have month are more details on "action news" tonight at 11:00. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 36 degrees tomorrow. wednesday 31. thursday an accuweather alert day for a potential for a nor'easter, 27. behind that friday and saturday highs only in the mid
