bigger and brighter. we are getting 2018 off to a frigid start with temperatures unable to get out of the teens and windchills in single digits. even the mummers admitted to being a tad chilly on their new year's day. it's new year's day and it's one of the coldest on record. let's get to cecily tynan for the latest on all of this. >> jim, we have an accuweather alert thanks to the cold weather. happy new year, philadelphia. the high hit 20-degrees, a full 21-degrees below average and our third coldest new year's day on record. that's the air temperature, not even the windchill today. windchills stuck in the single digits. satellite and radar if you look across the eastern two thirds of the nation, there is barely

anything going on thanks to the strong area of high pressure. that's plunging much of the nation into the deep freeze. philadelphia, makings it feel like one, st. louis, eight below and dallas, windchill 16. sub zero in jacksonville, florida. the cold is sustaining through the week and getting colder later in the week. we have windchill advisories across much of the nation and hard freeze expected in the deep south into texas. a lot of kids headed back to school after the long winter vacation, suburbs, eight degrees. windchill, zero to five below. we talk about cold air on the way and the chance of snow in the seven-day forecast. >> thank you, cecily. let's switch live to trish

hartman on the 5600 block of mcman street in the germantown section of philadelphia. you have seen hardship as people struggle with frozen pipes and no heat. >> that's right, jim. we spoke to a family that's been without heat most of the day. they say they have been on the phone most of the day and they are still waiting for the heat to come back on. >> i went to turn the water on and realized we didn't have water. the fact that we have a bauer boiboiler or heater was a conce. i figured the water had frozen. >> this mother of two noticed something was wrong around 10:30 this morning. she says calls to plumbers were fruitless saying it would be days because of high demand. calls to the water department weren't much help either.

a representative told us they have been inundated with calls like this but pipes are the homeowner's responsibility and there is not much they can do. >> crews responded to the emergency facility where pipes burst in the sprinkler system. while residented were evacuated to another area, they did not have to leave the premises. >> it's cold out. pipes crack. winter floods down. >> the philadelphia water department has a list of tips on how to prevent your pipes from freezing or what to do if you think your pipes are processen. find that information online. trish hartman channel6 "action news." jim? >> thank you, trish. residents of an apartment complex in northeast philadelphia are struggling since their building has been

without power all day. anunder ground transformer blew and knocked out electricity to two apartments. a water main broke but did not cause service problems. most residents are staying with friends or family until the power can be restored. the mummer's parade is in the history books and may have set a record as one of the coldest ever. give credit to the mummers for staying in fine form. let's go to reporter chris chrie ileto. the mummers are a dedicated group and they proved it today. >> dedicated indeed, jim. the performances and costumes were elaborated as always but the crowd size was not as big as previously. the driving force, mother nature. >> the celebration continued
