snow and strong winds and icy cold. >> the storm's path is shifted and we are looking at measurable snow across the region. parts of the jersey shore are under a blizzard warning and winter storm warnings as well. in fact, the philadelphia match diocese high schools are closed tomorrow. to word on philadelphia public schools, we have closures and delays on the bottom of your screen and at 6abc.com. philadelphia is already preparing the fleet of snow vehicle as head of the storm. the streets department has 85 pieces of equipment ready to role and 40,000 tons of salt all available to treat primary and second roads and sidewalks, people need salt and shovels ready to care for their own section of the sidewalk as well. >> penndot crews are out in full force following and during the storm and 550 trucks and 110,000 tons of salt are trod go and

crews are expecting the roads to be snow covered ahead of the high winds and asking people to drive to stay off the roads tomorrow. they talk about the plans for the storm. seni sara bloomquist spoke with residents. and first lets head to cecily tynan and adam joseph. they are watching the nor'easter since it developed in the weather center and the latest on the warnings. >> we were watching it way before it developed. >> and it's a two part system. the extreme dangerous cold that comes after the snow i'll be diving into. >> lets head over to the "action news" weather center i want to show you the system exploding off the coast they have know in northern florida and georgia can and the carolinas. and the center of the low is tucked in closer to the coast. the track has shifted about 50

miles west. which really isn't a shift. and it's all track dependant and it has an impact on the snow total, a lot of winter weather alerts. first of all we have blizzard warnings, posted along the coast. and it's not really about the falling snow and along the coast is where you get the strongest winds, 35 miles per hour or more for more than three hours, it reduces visibility less than a quarter mile. winter storm warnings are posted along the i-95 corridor interior south jersey and northern delaware. this is where expecting accumulating snow less snow expected across the far north and west suburbs but some snow and winter weather advisory are posted there. this storm system will roll up the coast 200 miles off the coast. and intensifying as it does. the high of it will be during

the thursday morning commute. i think that is why the school districts are canceling. this is the storm timeline, the snow will begin pushing in from the south to the north between 10:00 tonight and 2:00 in the morning, the steadiest snow falling at 3:00 and 11:00. basically through the morning hours. the morning commute will be dangerous. tapering off late in the afternoon. the snow will stop falling and then the winds picking up. for that part of the story lets head to meteorologist, adam joseph. >> as the storm continues to deepen especially east of new england we'll chat about the cold winds to wrap in behind the will he and that low as it goes into eastern canada because the low pressure centers the winds are counterclockwise they come in with a straight shot of injected arctic air from the hudson bay into new england including the mid-atlantic as the jet stream digs way down to

temperatures will plunge again. hypothermia and frostbite is a concern. it's more than just cold fingers, and it doesn't take long to happen especially in single digit temperatures and if your skin gets wet. the most common areas for frostbite is the fingers toes and nose and ears the systems are pain and discoloration, children and elderly and people with chronic conditions are at risk. if you suspect frostbite get inside as soon as possible. and damage could be farther along than you think. you need to go to an emergency room if severe. >> ultimately you can lose extremities and fingers and often times it's more severe than it appears initially. it's important once you identify a possible frostbite victim to get the extremities warmed up and keep them warmed up. >> the best way to avoid frostbite is to limit time

storm warnings and along the coast blizzard warnings, it's not really about the amount of snow but the wind. to have a blizzard warning you need three or four hours of frequent wind gusts of 35 miles per hour or greater combined with the falling or blowing snow reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile. visibility is a big issue with this storm right along the coast where you get the strongest wind gusts. and right now temperatures are not bad we made it above freezing, 33 currently 29. amazing when 29 doesn't feel that harsh. atlanta see airport 27 and wilmington 28. but cold enough for snow. the system was in pieces yesterday and the pieces are coming together and low pressure sitting right about here 200 miles off the coast. it will track up to the north none east very quickly and there is no blocking to slow it down. intensifying as it does.

future tracker 6 showing at 11:00 tonight. it will be snowing in south jersey and delaware and extends across the western suburbs by tomorrow morning and as we head into the afternoon, it will be tapering off. really the strongest steadiest snow occurring at 3:00 in the morning and 11:00 in the morning. the evening commute the snow will be out of here. but it will be on the ground. this is what to expect. closer to the coast expecting more snow, about 6 to 10 inches along the coastline. and interior south jersey up to the i-95 corridor, 3 to 6 inches and get to the north and west suburbs it's fighting a lot of dry air and lesser amounts, 1 to 3 inches, going from as low as an inch of snow to as high as 10 inches. so location is key. behind this system future tracker 6 showing the windchills, thursday 6:30 they drop down into the single digits and gets worse by friday morning and this unbelievable. windchill close to 10 below in

storm warnings now a blizzard warning is issued for part of our area and the snow is on the way and the amount you see is depending on where you live. and some areas could get up to a half foot and there are school closing s scrolling at the bottm of your screen. elizabeth herr is in new york where the same system is expected to pack a punch there. but first adam joseph with a look at the forecast. >> as we look at stormtracker 6 live double scan you can see the storm to the south bringing snow to the south and north carolina and parts of virginia and the low is getting going here and we continue to rapidly deepen as it heads to the northern and east but at the same time the northern extent of the snow it's breaking apart and a lot of dry air also on the western side of the storm, so the storm is going to fight the dry air. and the dry air is going to fight the storm itself. as it pushes up the eastern seaboard.

as we look at future tracker 6 it's close to 200 miles off our coast. this is far from a direct hit with a blockbuster nor'easter. it is still just a scrape as it passes by, once it heads into new england they are the ones that will see nearly one, two plus feet of snow and the strongest of the wins as this low passes off the coast of boston and hits northern parts of maine into late thursday evening and thursday night. as it passes by we have blizzard warning as long the shore for new jersey as well as delaware and the blizzard warning because of the combination of the snow falling and mainly the strong winds blowing around that snow. that is what a blizzard warning is, basically warranted for, it's the wind and the visibility. and winter storm warning for trenton and philadelphia and wilmington the heart of the delaware valley we see accumulating snow and less to the northern and west where there are winter weather advisories for southeastern

pennsylvania. here is the snapshot of the pro vial of winds, 50 in atlantic city and dover, near 40 philadelphia and west to reading and the wind is a powerful component and also the dangerous cold to follow. this is really going to be the biggest part of the story for us. the windchills going into thursday night into friday and saturday, and there is already a windchill for the poconos feeling close to 20 below tomorrow night. and we'll chat about the windchills coming up in the accuweather forecast. >> with the timing of this storm if you plan to get to work or anywhere tomorrow, it's important that your car be ready to handle the conditions. aaa says check your battery tonight and start-up your car and make sure it is in good condition. >> a common misconception is that cars need to be warmed up in order to run well. aaa says that cars newer than 11 years old, don't need to be

northampton county was an apparent murder-suicide. police were called to the west 2700 street last night and they found a 22-year-old woman and her 45-year-old husband. officers believe he killed her and turned the gun on himself. philadelphia police are searching for three men captured on surveillance video breaking into a store in the city's olney section. take a look at the video. and see the suspects lingering around the store. investigators say that they got into the basement many door and took a jar containing $600 in coins and cigarettes and cigars and a laptop. and now to check out conditions on the road right now. matt pellman is here with the latest on the commute home tonight. >> reporter: we are bracing ourselves for a rough one. if you need to head into work tomorrow morning. think about waiting a couple of hours and going in late if you can or working from home. i think it's a rough ride in the

the storm again that brought snow into the deep south and the storm continues to deepen and also rapidly deepen over the next 12 to 24 hours as it continues to drift off of our coastline. with this storm, it's going to bring and brought snow from florida to the carolinas and in the future all the way up to maine. so basically the entire eastern seaboard will see snow. gusty winds for 48 hours during and after the storm. bringing dangerous windchills that is the biggest thing we have to hone in on is the dangerous windchills and also challenging record low temperatures, as we head into the upcoming weekend. as we look at the numbers. 29 philadelphia, and 23 in allentown. tremendously cold for all snow and no mixture of sleet or freezing rain and the temperatures are low enough it's a fluffy snow not a heavy wet snowfall. >> satellite and radar showing the clouds coming in here

a blizzard warning for coastal counties of new jersey and winter storm warning for the philadelphia area. and archdiocese schools will be closed tomorrow. and we have yet to hear from philadelphia but all school closings we have heard from are running at the bottom of the screen. penndot and del/dot released their operations.
