both loading salt and brining roads and if you were bundled up today put on a few more layers tomorrow. winds are really going to get going. 40 to 50 miles per hour gusts. we'll see bitter cold temperatures as we approach the weekend right now again the big story, blizzard conditions in much of our coverage area, meteorologist, cecily tynan and adam joseph have the full story from accuweather. guys here we go. >> yesterday the storm was just in pieces and now we see the pieces coming together. it's a two part storm here we deal with the snow and also talking about the dangerous cold windchills. lets head over to the the "action news" weather center and you see the storm is forming now off the coast of south carolina. it's still another piece of energy diving in that will help the storm intensify. the track has shifted just a little bit. about 50 miles west and that has an impact on how much snow we are getting. if you look at the winter weather alerts.

we have a colorful map and blizzard warnings along the coast and the same along the winter storm watches yesterday. the reason is the winds, the winds are gusty all day long and that will greatly reduce visibility. it's more of a function of the winds than the snow. across south jersey and northern delaware and the i-95 corridor, we have winter storm warnings for accumulating snow and the farther north winter weather advisories not expecting as much snow. future tracker 6 showing the timing of the storm is a big problem for the thursday morning commute. the height of the storm basically at 8:00 in the morning. then that storm continues to intensify and will be a full-fledged blizzard across new england. they could get one to two feet of snow. the steadiest from 3:00 in the morning to 11:00 in the morning. and dangerous for the morning

commute and ending late in the afternoon and the snow ends and you get the highest totals. >> it's that cold that is dangerous and record breaking as the system pull its in from canada. we'll talk about the jet stream taking a dip way down to the south here behind the storm. as it really ramps up in northern new england and eastern canada we get a direct shot out of central canada, with the arctic air flooding in and you think about the arctic air we had around the new year. it's got nothing on what comes here as we get into late this weekend and the weekend. it's the winds that drive right through you during the storm tomorrow but even post storm on friday 40 to 45 miles per hour philadelphia north and west. 45 to 50 central new jersey and delaware. and right along the coast 50 to 55 miles per hour. so how it's going feel and how you should dress, as you get into tomorrow evening, right

jersey say that preparing for the approaching storm has as much to do with the bitter cold as it does with the pending snow totals and the extreme temperatures we expect afterwards the salt is less effective when it's extremely cold. we use a liquid calcium solution and that allows the salt to be more effective. >> this arctic freeze has shifted sales patterns. folks in margate say that along with salt and shovels customers are rushing to buy anything that keeps their plumbing from freezing. >> we are completely sold out of heaters and auto heating cakes for pipes and installation everybody is wiping out off the shelves. >> and the plows and salt spreaders are ready and local officials admit there are questions they will not be able to answer after they see what the storm will bring. >> we are talking about closing the school and we have gone over

"action news" reporter christie aleto is live at the streets department yard in hunting park. what is the situation there tonight? >> well jim, the city is hoping for the best but bracing for the worse. they have over 30,000 tons of salt ready to hit the streets in preparation of the overnight storm. the biggest challenge is mother natu nature's unpredictabilities. >> we are going off a one to three inch and 2 to 4 in that base. and we are prepare ford that if it goes a little bit more we have more equipment ready to go and fight it until it's done. >> 85 pieces of equipment are on hand in preparation for what could be an intense and unpredibable nor'easter. the city's streets department says their plan is to monitor conditions around the clock particularly overnight when the snow is expected to hit the

area. primary and secondary roads and bridges and high elevations will be the first priority. if the storm intensifies crews will immediately begin plowing. if you plow a thin layer of snow. it will form an ice layer and as the snowfalls and sits on it it becomes more slick. >> the action cam caught penndot crews brining along route 202 in montgomery county later in the day. 350 trucks at 110 thousand tons of salt are ready to tackle roads in the burbs and the timing of the storm will possess the biggest challenges for the morning rush. >> the expectation is that roads will be snow covered during the event regardless of how many trucks we have deployed. >> and crews are monitoring conditions an the clock and if you decide to venture out in the snow tomorrow morning during it's rush hour give yourself

but it ran into a series of violations including spills. today the department of environmental protection ordered work to stop until sunoco comes up with a plan to fix the problems. the city of wilmington is working to combat violent crime after a spike in homicides in 2017. police say that there were 34 homicides in all of last year. that is a 26% increase over 2016. and the highest number in six years. wilmington police chief robert tracy says he hopes to reduce crime in the future by focusing more on community policing. and a car plowed into the side a ross clothing store in levittown bucks county. the driver suffered minor injuries when the vehicle crashed into the exterior wall at route 13. and police are trying to determine what caused the drive toward lose control. coming up on "action news" tonight. the simple steps you can take in your home to keep your pipes

okay a couple of point, the city of philadelphia declared a snow emergency that means that residents have to get their cars off of designated streets by midnight tonight and city suspending trash and recycling pickup come tomorrow we have a snow storm, a little bit of snow on the way and wind on the way

as well and a lot of cold. the action cam looking at fairmont park we have the calm before the storm good amount of sunshine and high thin clouds late in the day. and didn't feel that bad. the high reached 33 finally above freezing and a winter storm is on the way. and if you look at the winter alerts, we have advisories in effect for our far north and west counties with the lesser amount of snow the i-95 corridor this is where we have winter storm warnings for moderate snowfall and along the shore heavier snow expected and high winds that is why blizzard warnings are posted. it entails three or more hours of wind gusts or sustained winds of 35 miles per hour or greater and that creates a lot of blowing snow and reduces visibility to less than a quarter mile and the blizzard warnings because of the win and not because of the amount of snow expected. temperatures dropping back into the 20s cold enough for snow.

allentown 21 and cape may 29 and reading 21. satellite 6 along with action radar showing this system is already on the move. it's moving at about 45 miles per hour. this is really a breathtaking pace for a storm like this. the center low is right about here. the track is shifted about 50 miles west. that will bring more snow inward and this storm system is really going to intensify. the current millibars which basically is the strength of the storm,000 millibars as the millibars drop the pressure drops that is an indication that the storm is strengthening and this dropped 40 millibars in 24 hours. bombogenesis you probably heard that term that is 24 millibars in 24 hours. new england can get up to two feet of snow and we'll just get

brushed. at 11:00 tonight it will be snowing in south jersey and delaware and overspreading our region in the morning and leaving tomorrow afternoon. how much you get depends on your location. the far north and west 1 to 3 inches of snow. i-95 corridor and interior south jersey and northern delaware 3 to 6. along the coast 6 to 10 inches of snow and the snow is not the only impact along the coast. we are looking at significant travel delays with blowing and drifting snow and minor coastal flooding at high tide and the afternoon cycle winds shift and wind gusts 50 to 55 miles per hour. than could cause power outages, the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast we have a snow storm snowy and windy through much of the day and 26 behind it. and the dangerous cold is behind it. 17 is the high on friday. and saturday 15 and windchills
