the poconos close to 30 degrees below zero. the way it felt on your body. allentown 11 below. philadelphia 8 degrees below zero. wilmington nine below. atlantic city airport reporting a wind chill of 7 degrees below zero and they really haven't recovered much. wind chills hovering very close to zero. philadelphia feels like one below, cape may feels like three. lancaster feels like 5 degrees below zero and the poconos currently the wind chill 19 degrees below zero. now, the national weather service has extended the wind chill advisory. they were supposed to be expiring at noon tomorrow. instead, they've been extended until 10 o'clock sunday morning and that wind chill warning continues until then in the poconos, so this dangerous cold will be lasting most of the weekend. so, tomorrow morning, the wind chills even a little bit more extreme in some parts of our region than this morning. the far northern suburbs, the lehigh valley, parts of berks county, the poconos, 15 to 30 degrees below zero. most of our region dropping to 10 to 15 degrees below zero

right around the coast still dangerous but not quite as harsh, five to 10 degrees below zero. so, the accuweather highlights will show you record lows are likely the next two nights. best chance will be sunday morning. that's when the temperature in philadelphia will drop to its coldest level in 24 years. monday evening, a wintry mix will develop but after that, i'm tracking a january thaw. i'll talk about that coming up in the full accuweather forecast. rick and monica. >> all right, cecily, we'll check back in later. thank you. meanwhile some philadelphia residents say they feel trapped on their own street because of the cold weather. "action news" was in oxford circle this afternoon. the frigid temperatures caused a water pipe to burst in a vacant house and sent water into the street. the result, a sheet of ice that froze around cars and encased the tires. residents we talked to say they couldn't get to work and could barely stand up outside. >> the whole driveway from the house that's leaking the water all the way down to the corner. the top end is fine but from

that house on down, it's horrible. >> residents say they called the water department which says the vacant home is on its list to shut off. >> bob brooks live at independence mall tonight. >> bob not only do folks have to clear snow they have to do it in dangerously cold weather tonight as well, hm? >> reporter: yeah, rick and monica, slightly. the darker it gets the colder it gets. now we just happened to end our day here at independence mall. we were trying to speak with some tourists out here braving the elements to see the historic sights. we went all over the city today and the common denominator were those covered side streets and if they're not cleared up by now they're going to get icy. shoveling out in fairmount, to south philadelphia and pretty much every neighborhood we stopped through today, is it cold. >> yes. >> reporter: shoveling out on covered side streets or to get to work. >> it's painful. it'soold. like frozen. >> reporter: richie was using his boots to break away

>> thanks bob. >> philadelphia school children may be out of class today and the rest of the weekend but crews were hard at work getting buildings ready for their return monday. "action news" at the blank ken burg school. they were checking all the classroom faucets and outside of course they shoveled the sidewalks and steps to make sure everyin is ready to go. >> all right, health check is extreme cold could be impacting flu season. the virus is hitting more states in fact most of the country is now reporting widespread flu activity. >> and as of this week that includes pennsylvania. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman at the big board with what you need to know. >> some experts say flu virus survivors better in extreme cold but we also see more people getting sick this time of year because more people are together inside so those germs can spread. now, the cdc uses this scale to measure activity. pennsylvania is now at the highest level at widespread activity and it's actually

hitting our area southeast pennsylvania especially hard. new jersey is still in the regional level and then delaware also hit widespread activity this week. many stat have seen a spike in cases. doctors in illinois even held a press conference warning people about it. this year's predominant strain can be a difficult one and unfortunately the vaccine the gf you get sick, it should still help possible by making your symptoms less severe. now, it's not too late to get a flu shot if you haven't gotten one yet. also, now more than ever it is time to practice good hand washing and to d common surfaces. and besides the flu, there are a lot of other viruses going around right now so that's a did that way to protect yourself and your family. doctors are also warning about the effects of the cold air on your lungs especially for people with asthma or other breathing conditions. the cold air can be irritating to even healthy lungs but for

people with chronic lung conditions, they are at a greater risk for having problems such as wheezing or shortness of breath. that's because it can narrow the large airways. so, you'll need to limit your time outside and be prepared just in case. >> what's really important if you do have to go outside in the cold temperatures that you take your rescue inhaler, your quick relief medication with you in the event that your symptoms flare. >> now, also for everyone if you are outse, wrap a scarf r warm the air so that it's less irritating for your airways. now, as for exercise, if you have any kind of medical problems youul shod move your workout indoors. if you're healthy it is still dangerously cold outside but if you insist on running outside and you're used to it, here's some tips before. you do that want to warm up inside before you actually go outside and of course bundle up, lots of layers. make sure to cover your head, your ears, yourur

toes and in this kind of weather it is best to shorten your session when it's this cold outside. so, rick, there you go, you've got your shorten your session. >> i will still work out inside. >> me, too. >> for five minutes. thank you ali. appreciate that. in other news, this group of men spent the day shoveling sidewalks and driveways. they belong to the organization able bodied christian men. we caught up with them in south philadelphia where they were bundled up trying to clear a way for a 70-year-old woman's home here. >> this is a charitable organization out here serving our seniors disabled. for the past eight years every winter we come out here. >> abc men provides the shoveling free of charge much they buy all their own salt and supplies and say any donations they receive allow them to help more people in need. >> that's wonderful. a chemical spill prompted a hazmat response at drexel university today. firefighters saw some kind of smoke coming from the third floor of this building in the 200 block of south 33'd street. turns out there was a

hydrochloric acid spill. that chemical is pretty common in household cleaning products but this concentration of it required a hazmat call. since the school is on break only three people were inside at the time and they were safely evacuated. a 61-year-old woman was robbed in the middle of the day outside a popular store in newark, delaware. now authorities are looking for this man in connection with that crime. and this is the car he's believed to be driving. a into your model dodge charger;, newer model dodge charger. authorities believe he used some kind of weapon to target woman outside a dsw shoe store. fortunately she was not hurt. >> time for a check of our traffic report. >> hey, matt. >> made it to the end of our first short but snowy and therefore felt long week of 2018. yeah, we've had lots of issues because of the weather including vehicles that don't want to run in these extremely cold temperatures. broken down vehicles here on the schuylkill eastbound side by girard avenue.

it's off to the side. penndot is here to save the day. the good news is all the lanes are opened and because people were off work and school today, volume is a little bit lighter than normal on most of the highways. they alsoat bolt bus running on the ben franklin bridge so all laneseopened there as you head towards new jersey. everything is opened now on the pennsylvania turnpike. both of our accidents near fort washington have cleared. you is it ill still have some eastbound slowing coming east of plymouth meeting through willow grove. still watching that crash in sellersville bucks county. southbound lanes of 309 near perkasie. may want to stay on the southbound northeast extension. speeds there up around 70 miles per hour and in chester county a vehicle ran into a snow bank. it's stuck there so 322 is blocked off temporarily as they try and pull it out. maybe use the 30 bypass instead. just some westbound slowing there because of an earlier crash and sun glare. in east goshen chester county still watching a crash along paoli pike near vista drive. in egg harbor township still trying to recover from the storm especially close to the shore and now there's a crash

>> dramatic video out of austria tonight when two skiers were left dangling from a chair lift. several people had been rescued but two skiers remained trapped for several terrifying moments stuck high above the mountains swinging side to side. you can see their legs and skis dangling from the open seats as the snowfall rages around them. at one point the winds were blowing up to 87 miles per hour. a rescue team eventually got to the skiers. no one was injured. but this hair raising video shows why ski lifts have to shut down during strong winds. in new york city the

but be careful especially the rivers. there's a current underneath and sometimes it looks frozen but it's not all that thick so try to keep the kids off the ice unless you really know it's very thick and it's safe. right now the temperatures, the air temperatures 16 degrees in philadelphia. we only made it up to 17. our average high for this time of the year is 40. that would feel like a heat wave. allentown 15. the same in trenton. atlantic city airport 16. wilmington 15 but of course you factor in the winds, the wind chill, the way it feels, 1 degree below zero in philadelphia, zero in trenton. 5 degrees below zero in lancaster and those bitter wind chills will last right through most of the weekend. satellite and radar showing we have plenty of sunshine. we had plenty of sunshine earlier today. high pressure is building in arctic high pressure and this will what was that us dry and sunny through the wicked much weekend but the wind and cold stay with us. tonight down to five in philadelphia, the record low is four. going to be close.

basically pulling down all of this arctic air as it's still winding up just east of caribou, maine. the winds are counterclockwise so you get that flow coming from canada so it's fresh arctic air 17 below is the wind chill in syracuse, 12 below in pittsburgh one below in the city of philadelphia and 26 below in parts of southeasternanada. winds stillery gusty, 42 miles an hour in philadelphia, reading 39, trenton 40. atlantic city still close to 50 miles an hour throughout the day today and wilmington 46 miles an hour wind gusts and those winds aren't going anywhere any time soon. as you can look from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. this is for tomorrow. winds still gusting between 35 and 40 miles an hour feeling like 10 below first thing in the morning and even in the afternoon this is for the city, it's colder in the suburbs staying one below zero and not only are we dealing with those strong winds throughout the day tomorrow, they'll continue a little bit

this is video crossing the ocean city bridge yesterday. now same bridge this a.m., clear pavement, clear skies, terrific visibility. overnight plows blitzed the main shore roads. side roads though still a work in progress. >> main roads are fine did a great job but the side streets are pretty bad, icy. >> reporter: like most eateries the sunrise cafe was closed for the storm. this morning staffers were digging out. not easy given the extreme cold and wind. >> yeah, the wind is brutal and it's like you said you got to make sure you're blowing the snow so it doesn't blow right back in your face. >> reporter: inside the grille was up and operating. among the customers three neighbors enjoying breakfast and answering our questions about this storm. >> i remember a storm like this back in the 70's. we were talking earlier. bob says he remembers one. >> 2010 we had one 'cause my sister-in-law was living with us and i told her you're in ocean city, 5-inches of snow

you might get maybe and we had this big storm. >> reporter: plowed roads in some cases meant blocks of plowed in cars. in the 1100 block of bay this woman had cleared her walk but said the rock hard snow that trapped her van and suv just too much. her appeal. >> any able bodied person out here in ocean city who wants to earn some good money, they can come by and shovel out my two vehicles for me. >> reporter: as we said, it's expected it's going to be a slow difficult dig-out and given the deep freeze forecast, getting back to normal here is not expected to be easy or particularly quick. in somers point, john rawlins channel6 "action news." >> well, yesterday's winds and water caused a seawall breach in massachusetts sparking massive flooding and evacuations. take a look. the national guard had to be deployed to parts of the area after water began pouring through a crack in the wall. about 20 residents had to leave their homes. a newer section of that seawall is holding up but

[laughter] >> wind chill advisories in effect now. have been extended until 10 o'clock on sunday morning for the entire viewing area. wind chill warnings up in the poconos. basically what this means is limit your outdoor time if you can right through 10 o'clock on sunday morning 'cause frost bite if you're not careful and your extremities especially like the fingertips, toes, ears, nose you can get frost bite in less than 30 minutes. 16 is the air temperature right now in philadelphia. 15 trenton, allentown. 15 wilmington as well as millville so temperatures are pretty on par across-the-board here. not varying all that much but then up factor in the wind and this is the number we're going to pay attention to all weekend long. feeling below zero pretty much area wide with the jackpot up in the poconos and not a good jackpot, 19 degrees below zero. satellite and radar showing that the atmosphere is

completely wiped out at this point here. so, we've got that crystal clear sky out there. you do see some clouds to the north and west due to that cold wind coming off of the great lakes. but also with this extended cold, if you take a look here from harvey cedars, new jersey, there on long beach island, harvey cedars police they're great about tweeting out and warning people and letting them know what's going on on the island there you can see that the bay is completely frozen over but a beautiful shot as the sun sets here this evening without a cloud in the sky and quite a view. equally beautiful in the winter as the summer but very dangerous out there for extended periods of time. overnight tonight clear, frigid but wind chills subzero and near records for trenton, wilmington as well as atlantic city by tomorrow morning. icy cold elsewhere despite no records late tonight but then tomorrow that sunshine is with us, the arctic high still way to the west so the wind still 35 to 40 miles an hour. a high of 15, colder than

today with wind chills five to 15 below the entire day and then as the winds ease saturday night sunday morning as winds relax you can throw even more of any heat that's generated up into the atmosphere so we're going to slam those temperatures down below zero. these aren't wind chills, these are air temperatures. by sunday morning breaking all of these old records and smashing the old record of four in 1884 in atlantic city. we're going for five below sunday morning. then monday there are two systems we're watching. they stay separate here so we just got a little clip here put even with a little clip late monday, monday evening and monday night, there could be some ice and snow to deal with here as the pattern starts to change. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast it's a quiet but dangerously cold weekend. highs only in the teens. wind chills below that. again, late monday there will be that wintry mix passing through at 34 and then we bump it to the 40's tuesday. there is a little bit blip here on wednesday down to 35 but then back to the 40's and 50's at the end of next week
