like today on watkins street in south philadelphia. as always the residential side streets are last to see plows and local residents have to do their part. but for the next several days, it's all about polar type temperatures. let's get the latest from meteorologist cecily tynan. >> and jim, those dangerous wind chills sett inovernight ane sticking around right through the weekend. the poconos this morning nearly felt 30 degrees below zero with the wind chill, allentown 11 below, philadelphia eight below, wilmington nine below atlantic city airport with all that snow 7 degrees below zero and wind chills actually will drop even lower tomorrow morning. right now wind chills already dropping below zero in philadelphia, four below in allentown and reading, six below in lancaster, two below millville. 23 degrees below zero in the poconos and the national weather service has extended the wind chill advisory. it was supposed to be in effect until noon tomorrow. it's now been extended until

10 o'clock sunday morning and that wind chill warning remains in effect for the poconos. so, the lowest wind chills tomorrow morning again, even more intense than this morning, most of our viewing area, the wind chill 10 to 15 degrees below zero. the north and west suburbs extending across the lehigh valley into the poconos, 15 to 30 degrees below zero and even right along the coast where you're closer to that warm ocean still pretty brutal wind chills five to 10 degrees below zero. so record lows expected the next two nights. the best chance will be sunday morning. that's when philadelphia will have its coldest morning in 24 years. we start to lift out of it by monday. but then i'm tracking a wintry mix behind it a big change in our weather pattern and i'll talk about that in the seven-day forecast. jim. >> thank you cecily. let's switch live to ocean city, new jersey, and "action news" reporter chad pradelli. chad, the shore got pummeled yesterday so how goes that tough task of digging out today? >> reporter: pummeled big

time. a lot of people got dugout but now we need some warmth and sun because there's all these mounds of snow, especially here in ocean city which got 18-inches of snow yesterday. the blowing snow were you was reminiscent of yesterday's mother nature it was the snowblower. frigid temperatures made the 18-inches of snow hard and crusty. managing a snowblower was a challenge but it beats a shovel. if you didn't have this what would it be like? >> i would be calling somebody with some equipment. [laughter] >> reporter: others like pam lockwood brought out the heavy equipment. he took a seat in the bobcat but there's a trade-off. >> you get cold in the bobcat. shoveling you stay warm but it's not too bad out. it was supposed to be worse i think. >> reporter: in the heart of ocean city, most businesses

were closed. the boardwalk was mostly covered and mounds of snow made parking a premium. most store owners it seems said forget it and shut down for the day. but not frances hastings who owns local gym and fitness. >> we were opened yesterday at 5:30 in the morning. and there were people here working out. >> reporter: committed. >> they know that i'm going to make that door no matter what. >> reporter: and talking about digging out, we need to remind people about the dangers of shoveling snow. a gentleman in cape may courthouse says the father of one of his good friends died of a massive heart attack in sea isle city yesterday while shoveling snow. i'm live in ocean city, chad pradelli channel6 "action news." jim. >> all right, chad thank you. drone6 toured the art museum area and the ben franklin parkway in philadelphia. it felt as cold as it looked.

city employees were told to stay home today so the streets department could do its work less encumbered by traffic. meanwhile the schuylkill river frozen over and we shouldn't expect any melting any time soon. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live on independence mall tonight. bob, we want people to be careful of the coldest weekend but a lot of folks have no choice but to dig out of mounds of snow. >> reporter: jim, that's right. as it gets darker it gets colder. the snow is starting to freeze and crunch not a good feeling at all. the reason we came to independence mall we wanted to speak with some tourists out here braving the elements as they took in the historic sites but we went all over the city today, the common denominator those frozen side streets and i'll tell you what if they're not uncovered at this point jim, they might be covered in ice in a few hours. as night approaches and temperatures continue to fall, we came across philadelphians everywhere working to clear

the snow before it freezes. >> first one snapped. >> reporter: snow too heavy too hard. >> yup. >> reporter: that's richie in south philadelphia on his second shovel to get his car out. between all the traffic and frozen snow his patience was running out. and then just two blocks away on marshall street the scene even worse. it was covered entirely. neighbor frank ciccone came out to only warm his car out. >> going down to five tonight zero tomorrow. you got the engine -- it will seize up on you. >> reporter: he has no plans to take it out anywhere. >> no salt trucks or nothing up here. they never do. >> reporter: we also saw several spots marked off with chairs and cones people trying to save them after digging them out the practice known as savesies is illegal. up on aspen streets covered. neighbors opting to shovel out now. >> got my heaviest coat on here hat gloves everything. >> reporter: as cold as it has been today from the schuylkill river frozen over to being able to walk on frozen snow on broad street some were trying to embrace it

whether it was jogging. aren't you cold out here. >> no. >> reporter: or as you can see kids playing in it or braving it with co-workers to and from work. >> we're headed to starbucks for a morning fix and then we've got to get to work. we've spent enough time complaining. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live outside the d.a.'s office in center city. vernon, people who were ocked by all this really haven't being paying much attention. >> reporter: jim, d.a. krasner campaigned promising radical change and to attack the status quo here in philadelphia head on. his first move, to fire hundreds of years worth of prosecutial experience. it was a spectacle here today.

the file boxes just kept rolling out of the d.a. office a clear sign the purge was under way. mass firings. more than 30 dismissals by the new regime and at his swearing in on tuesday larry krasner the new d.a. promised sweeping reforms including plans for less incarceration and a pull back on seeking the death penalty but he dodged questions about a rumored mass blood letting of career veterans like mark gillison a 30 year veteran prosecutor who starred in the homicide division for many years sending lots of killers to death road and life in prison. many of those fired today were like mark gillison too emotional or angry to speak on camera about how they're being treated by krasner. they told me they were hauled in front of a human resources bureaucrat today and let go without any explanation. larry krasner himself was nowhere to be seen. from his office late today here's a portion of his statement "change is never easy. d.a. krasner was given a clear mandate from the voters for

transformational change. today's actions were necessary to achieve that agenda. a retired veteran prosecutor blasted the d.a. as always having been soft on crime even back during krasner's days as a defense attorney. >> he's always had an agenda. he didn't really look at the evidence. he just painted this picture of law enforcement is bad. >> reporter: jim, tonight larry krasner issued a statement reassuring the public in that statement that their pending cases will be handled properly in the days and weeks ahead despite today's late hour shakeup even though the assistant district attorneys handling their cases before have now been fired. i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news" live in center city. >> thank you vernon. on the local business front, word tonight that sears is closing more than a lunn hundred add additional stores including in this area.

the company made the decision as it tries to recover from declining sales. a k-mart in the port richmond section of philadelphia and another sears in northeast philadelphia will also close their doors for goodbye early april. coming up on "action news" tonight, fire breaks out at a popular south jersey restaurant. plus, a sixers star shares his shoveling tips learned from a childhood in chicago. meteorologist cecily tynan with the seven-day accuweather forecast. it actually does get a little warmer at some point down the road. it does, right 80. >> yes. >> i know. >> a fire damaged a popular restaurant in gloucester city. the flames spread through vitale's italian bistro after 10:30 this morning. firefighters also had to deal with subzero wind chills as they brought the blaze under control. fortunately nobody was hurt. investigators today are back on the scene of that highrise fire in that atlantic city. nearly 300 people were forced to flee the 16 story building last night when the fire erupted on north vermont avenue. the complex is run by the housing authority. it is home to many senior and disabled citizens. the fire chief tells "action news" the fire was caused by an overload electrical feed. this woman is accused of spending other people's money in delaware. police say that she put a skimming device on the drive through atm at the federal credit union in newark on december 23rd. more than $7,000 was stolen

from nine customer accounts before the device was discovered. if you know who this woman is or if you think you are a victim you are urged to call police. well, the new year means higher tolls on the pennsylvania turnpike. motorists will see a 6 percent increase for both cash and e-z pass beginning sunday. the turnpike commission said the increase is essential to meet its financial obligations. there is one exception. there will be no change for e-z pass customers at the delaware river bridge going westbound in bucks county. dunkin donuts and the red cross are working together again to encourage blood donations in the philadelphia area. january is national blood donor month. anybody who gives blood this month will receive coupons for a free hot coffee and a free doughnut. the campaign kicked off today er in spring garden.ati and we here at channel6 are doing our best to help you survive this dangerous winter

facebook page from okay wood wood -- oakwood bay new jersey lots of ice snow and plenty of air. the temperatures never climbed out of the teens. the high in philadelphia today 17. that's 23 degrees below normal. currently it's 15 in philadelphia, the same in trenton, atlantic city airport, 12 in reading and lancaster, 14 in allentown but you factor in the winds, we've really never lost the winds. the wind chill currently four below in philadelphia, the same in allentown and reading, six below in lancaster, four below in pomona and the wind chills will drop even lower as we head through the overnight hours. as far as snowfall kind of interesting to look at. the area that typically sees the less amount of snow, the shore, atlantic city airport, 2 feet of snow so far this season, philadelphia about half that. wilmington about 10-inches, allentown typically the jackpot zone only about 10 and a half inches of snow but we get that coastal storm off the coast, that's why the shore has been seeing a lot more snow.

now satellite and radar showing the snow is out of here. we have arctic high pressure building in. so that's really drying us out. we'll see plenty of sunshine through the weekend but it remains brutally cold and it remains windy most of the weekend. tonight temperatures dropping into the single digits. philadelphia five, only 1 degree shy of the record. wilmington, though, probably a record of five. trenton, atlantic city a record low of four. allentown down to two. and cape may down to 10 degrees but wind chills dropping down as low as 30 degrees below zero and through the day saturday, kind of a repeat performance oftodaye building in, we get the winds gusting 35 to 40 miles an hour at times. the high only 15 degrees, kind of strange to see that in the weather map but the wind chills five to 15 degrees below zero and then sunday morning looks like we have widespread record lows. philadelphia calling for a low of 1 degree below zero. that will be the coldest day here in that 24 years. allentown close but likely a record low of five below.

trenton two below. atlantic city airport 5 degrees below zero. smashing the old record of 4 degrees set back in 18. all that snow pack is going to get very cold. wilmington ro. o the poconos i'll see you there. limit your time outdoors. wind chills 30 below zero. sunday not quite as harsh 17 but wind chills still 10 below to five. monday evening i'm tracking two pieces of energy. they really don't ever get completely together but it will likely bring us some light precipitation. the problem with the frozen ground, there could be some freezing rain monday evening. i'll keep you posted. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, it's just cold all weekend, temperatures stuck in the teens. record cold sunday morning. monday watching that wintry mix. not a major event but again, could cause some icing. tuesday, though, starts to thaw out. partly sunny, 42. drops down to 35 on thursday -- wednesday. then friday 52 degrees as the storm cuts to our north and
