accuweather forecast. >> the wind chills never got above zero. today is going to be cold. later this coming week the temperatures really start responding we'll have a few 50s in the 7-day forecast. right now this is the coldest that we've seen. this is the worst of it right now. it's 4 in glassboro, 3 in vineland and 3 in browns mills and it feels like zero below ever. 12 below in reading, 3 below in philadelphia. and about -9 up there in trenton. forecast for today, it's still going to be cold but not quite as harsh because the winds ease up during the afternoon. 19 degrees is the forecasted high. wind chill values we're actually getting above zero until about 10:00 a.m. and that's when the

wind chill values get into the singl digits. by 2:00, 7, by 4:00 it will feel li 8 and by 6:00 it feel like 7 degrees. another bitter night is on tap, temperatures once again getting down to the low to mid teens and a wintry mix develops tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow evening's commute the ground is completely frozen, this is going to create some problems. i'll talk more about that and the milder air in the 7-day forecast. >> all across the area, whether you are talking a walk outside, it's brutally cold outside. on this day that many flocked to church, old man winter did not answer our prayers for the warmer weather. jeff chirico has more on those that need help from this polar plunge. >> at acme in the northeast, not even the cold deterred the same

from venturing outside. >> picking up a couple of things. i feel like an idiot now that i'm out here. >> reporter: we saw this woman dashing to her car, across the city the polar plunge taking its toll on people and pipes. a water main break flooded the street which will no doubt become an icy mess. this is one of ten tonight. meanwhile the dangerous cold has homeless activists on alert. a regular saturday meal and ensured no one would be left out in the cold. >> there are folks who don't have a place to go yet we've contacted city outreach teams. >> reporter: the team arrived and took several men women to a shelter. >> people can become very sick or they can actually die and we want to prevent that from happening. >> reporter: and staying warm is a concern for this couple of swept philadelphia too. she has been scooping water from her basement. she's racing to keep the water

to save someone else. >> reporter: black bunting is up at edge in45 as colleagues do remember him and mourn at this time. according to a statement released by the philadelphia fire department, he is survived by his mother and other relatives. reporting in strawberry mansion, annie mccormick, channel 6 action news. >> the fire he was responding to also killed a person in the home. you'll hear the call for help at that scene. and new this morning a driver is hurt after an suv slid on the slick roads and slammed into a utility pole in delaware county. the action cam was on the scene of the 1600 block of baltimore avenue. the crash brought wires down across the road. there is no word on the extent of the driver's injuries. utility crews are making repairs to the downed wears. >> if you're just waking up with

of the ice. this is the first time his pool has been frozen. he said it was pretty comfortable up there since he's from indiana. >> chris sowers tracking the accweather forecast. >> i'm hoping i have a little bit of time out here. this cold snap things that you just don't see are happening. >> thank you. >> wind chill advisory, it remains in affect until about 10:00 a.m. for most of the viewing area. it's a warning to the north in the poconos where wind chills are anywhere from 20-25 below zero. the wind blowing this morning has actually helped to keep the temperatures a little bit milder than what we were originally thinking yesterday. nonetheless frostbite can occur in about 25 minutes or less with conditions this cold. if you're going to be outdoors you really need to bundle up

here. we're in the thick of it right now. we're in the worst part of this cold snap which actually started on christmas day. 19 degrees is today's forecasted high. yesterday we only managed a high temperature of 16 degrees. we should be at 40, we're no where near that. we're sitting at 7 in philadelphia. the normal is 26 degrees. air temperatures, actually philadelphia down to 6 now. it's 3 in allentown, 3 in reading, lancaster zero, atlantic city has shattered their record low, they're now at 2. trenton that's a tie, 2. 4 in millville, 10 in cape may and -6 degrees right now in the poconos and it feels like below zero temperatures everywhere when you factor in the wind. 9 below in trenton, millville and atlantic city. and if you look at those wind chill values during the late morning hours you can see we'll get above zero for a change. we didn't do that all day

yesterday. by afternoon we'll see temperatures, you saw a little spike there when the model was showing about 13. by 2:30 it's single digits everywhere, except down to the south where it could get as mild as 11 or 12 later on. during the evening hours these numents are going to plummet back then. -4 in the poconos. nothing going on across the eastern half of the united states, but we do have this little icy mix that's starting to develop across the heartland of the nation and the high plains. that's the next system that we're watching here. so as we take a look at future tracker 6, skip over today, today is a nice looking day, lots of sun. fast forward tomorrow morning. the commute is fine. temperatures are below freezing, an increase in clouds but the roads are going to be dry. by the afternoon, we get to 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon, here comes this small system, snow is breaking out north of the pennsylvania partnership.

sleet and snow mix to the south. that will be for places around the mason dixon line. the temperatures have been so cold over the last several days, even if we manage to get above freezing, everything is still frozen solid. if we do get rain everything is going to become a sheet of ice. be careful out here tomorrow evening. the evening commute to be very dyesy and as we into tuesday morning everything clears up. look where where we're starting tuesday morning. we'll actually be in the 20s and this starts the warming trend. all this moisture begins from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. across the viewing area. 2:00 western suburbs, 7:00 for the jersey shore. all snow for the lehigh valley and the poconos. it's meanly sleet with snow mixed in for the i-95 corridor. we are expecting a coating. it's enough to create a lot of

dyke has died. he was best known for playing the assistant coach on the show "coach." he also made appearances on his older brother's hit series the dick van dyke show. he died of heart failure in arkansas. he was 86 years old.

nasa is saying good-bye to its first space shuttle commander, john young. he died due to complications from pneumonia. he was one of the most experienced astronauts who also walked on the moon. he was the first american to enter space six times taking part in nasa's gemini apollo space shuttle programs. he was 87 years old. >> a family finally opened the christmas gift that they never thought they would receive. surveillance cameras at the home caught a woman stealing packages from their doorstep. they filed a police report and thought that would be the end of it. then on new year's day the surveillance cameras captured the thieves returning the gift. the family says they are overwhelmed with gratitude. health leaders in england launched a campaign to help parents take control of the

right now from the spring garden section of philadelphia. parts of the vine street expressway is a sheet of ice. you can see that behind us on the screen. it's forced a closing of a stretch of the expressway in both directions from 17th to 23rd street. >> here's the source of the problem. a water line break at a garage alove the expressway at 17th and callow hill street. water has poured on to the expressway and quickly turned to ice. >> we want to show you a live picture, crews on the scene working to cut off the water and remove that ice from the expressway. for now avoid the vine street expressway, that goes without saying. and stick with action news for updates on this story. chris sowers is tracking the end to this terrible stretch of weather today will be really bad but a nicer week ahead you say. >> the saying goes you save the best for last, in this case we saved the worst for last.

the coldest of the cold is actually occurring right now. these are actual temperatures, every number you see highlighted is a new record low. trenton and wilmington they've tied their record lows. it's 2 degrees in trenton, atlantic city that is a record for you guys down there. it's -6 in the poconos, 3 above in readings, zero in lancaster and 6 degrees in philadelphia. so again as we look at the records here in philadelphia the record is 4 so we're close but not quite there yet. allentown we're not going to get to the record. it looks like there's too much wind so the temperature hasn't dropped off as much as we thought. trenton 2 has tied the record, atlantic city the old record was 4 you're now at 2 and wilmington is also tied their record low which was set in 2014. as we look at the lowest wind chills this morning, still looking at 15 below to the

north. 5-15 below for most of the viewing area and to the jersey shore, mainly cape may and sussex counties 5 above to 5 below through mid morning and temperatures will start climbing a little bit and the winds will finally start to calm down. it's still cold out there but not nearly as harsh as yesterday. yesterday was brutal. it won't be that bad. 10:00 a.m. temperature, 10. by 4:00, 18 degrees. when i come back we'll talk about a wintry mix that could be heading this way tomorrow and nice january thaw by this upcoming weekend. > thank you so much, chris. latest area seeing problems caused by deep freeze that has gripped the entire tri-state and much of the he's coast. last night the action cam in northeast philadelphia where few people ventured outside but those who did were headed to the

acme to get some food. the dangerous cold has homeless advocates on alert. at chosen 300 ministers they served meals and did everything they could to get everyone into a warm place. >> respond on may day. >> reporter: it was the call no one wants to hear. may day. a firefighter is trapped inside of a burning home. that frantic scene was happening in the 2200 block of north colorado street. firefighters had just gone into a row home to make a rescue. they got the occupant out but he wouldn't make it. and the fire commissioner tells us tragically, lieutenant matt letourneau would become trapped during the response. >> an interior structural collapse occurred trapping lieutenant letourneau under

debris. >> reporter: at that point the fire has escalated to two alarms and firefighters were there trying to get him out. >> he was never alone. the rescue effort started almost immediately and every firefighter quickly went into rescue mode and did everything they could. >> reporter: the crews continued to battle the blaze and navigate through heavy smoke and freezing conditions. it would take roughly a half hour to remove lieutenant letourneau. both he and the victim were pronounced dead. >> it's so tragic that someone lost their life. >> our hearts are breaking. >> reporter: two other firefighters were taken to the hospital as well. they're expected to be okay. another neighbor here was also exposure issues. they're expected to be okay.u c is still up.

homicide of 2018. a man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting. the victims were in this car you're going to see here when someone fired shots, at least 11 into the vehicle. it happened around 6:00 last night at gerard and marion avenues. both victims were rushed to the hospital. that man died. the woman critically wounded. at this hour no arrests have been made. and there is an active search for a university of pennsylvania student who disappeared while visiting southern california. he was with his family over the holidays and then vanished on tuesday. police say he met up with a friend and trove to a park in orange county. he was last seen right around 11:30. his dad says he believes his son was planning to come home because he didn't take his wallet with him. >> if you're just waking up with us, president trump at camp david and he is praising his accomplishments and looking

this morning. it is just brutally cold out there once again. the last few days thursday that was the day of the nor'easter. the actual high was 29 but that came 1 minute after midnight. the afternly 16. the normal is 40. the wind chills both of these days well below zero and this morning we're waking up to wind chills below zero once again. air temperature in philadelphia, 6. we have a wind chill of3 which considering what it's been like over the last couple of hours. it's 3 degrees above zero in allentown, the record trenton you'ved low, it's 2. wilmington has also tied their record low. atla has shattered their record. 9 for dover and cape may and zero degrees out there in lancaster. and even if the actual air temperatures aren't below zero, the wind chills certainly are. anywhere from 5-10 below for

most of the delaware and the lehigh valleys. clear conditions, today will be a nice-looking day. yesterday, beautiful, lots of sunshine but you couldn't even go oside because the wind chills were so bad. not quite as harsh today. it's going to be a nice looking day with a lot of sun but we lose that gusty breeze. there's going to be somewhat of a wind but nothing even close to what we had yesterday. future tracker 6, the one concern that i have here over the next 36 hours or so is going to be monday evening. the morning commute is fine. we've fast-forwarded into tomorrow. we're going to skip over today because it's a lot of sunshine expected. tomorrow morning waking up to a lot of clouds, temperatures in the 20s. here comes this shield of moisture by 3:00 it's snowing and sleeting across the western suburbs. it gets into the city by 3:00, to 4:00. and we start picking up this blue color here that is a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

temperatures right there on the mark 32 degrees snowing to the north. it will probably hit the coast between 5:00 and 7:00 in the evening. and of course those are times when everybody is driving home from work and school. the evening commute could be dicey around the delaware and lehigh valleys. the morning commute is fine. it's the evening commute where things are going to get slippery. a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain. temperatures, let's say by some miracle we get to 34 degrees tomorrow, it's not going to matter because the ground is so cold. even if we do see the sleet and freezing rain, everything is going to freeze on contact so be very, very careful tomorrow evening. for today, 19 in philadelphia, reading, lancaster and allentown. trenton the high 18. 20 in cape may, 21 in atlantic city and overnight tonight the temperatures are still bone-chilling cold but not quite as bad as what we're seeing this morning. 11 in reading, 15 in philadelphia, 10 in millville renton and 15 in cape may.

below. you'll go 15 with sunny skies. here's the good news. this bright purple was sitting right here yesterday. it is slowly pushing off the coast. to the southwest.40s and 50s off dallas was down to 32 degrees this same time yesterday. so this cold air mass is slowly retreating back north up into canada and the pattern looks like this in the last two weeks where suddenly looked like this as we head into this upcoming weekend. winds are shift out of the southwest temperatures are going to sky rocket into the 40s and 50s all that bitter arctic air goes farther north closer to the pole where it belongs. and then looking ahead cold pat down. we have at days coming the next seven days where we'll hit 50 degrees or warmer. there's one day we could hit 57 or 58. after the 16th we have a complete january thaw where we could go two weeks with temperatures well above seasonal averages. the normal is 40 and i can see a
