on "action news" is an accuweather alert. water main breaks entomb cars, there will be snow ice and rain on tap this afternoon. we have important information to pass along because of the approaching storm, the philadelphia school district and the archdiocese of philadelphia has announced they will close schools at 1:00 p.m. also, several schools have dismissed ahead of the storm. the action cam was in newtown square at 11:00 a.m. as marple newtown high school let out early. we have information about other schools dismissing early run i and long the bottom of the screen during the newscast. melissa magee is in for david murphy. she joins us with details of the afternoon weather heading our way. >> reporter: it is the timing the event that's the biggest concern as we track the moisture move in from a west/east

direction. we're a 27 degrees, 33 in cape may. # 1 in dover, you factor in the windchill most spots climbed up to the teens, 6 degrees in philadelphia. same thing in reading and lancaster. 15 in allentown. we issued the accuweather alert because a winter weather advisory was posted for the heart of the delaware and lehigh valleys. it goes up an hour from now lasting until 9:00 p.m. as we are tracking wintery precipitation across the area. storm tracker 6 live double scan 3d it is cold enough to support snow, mixed precipitation across portions of the lehigh valley. 1:00 p.m. we have the snow mixeding out in the poconos, lehigh valleerks county and just in time for the ride home you notice the precipitation along the i-95

battling the winter storm. our frigid temperatures wreak havoc on water mains across the city. action cam in east oak lane part of the city. water main busted at 2:00 a.m. there were no evacuations due to the broken main. slippery road conditions led to a crash on the kelly drive north of boathouse row. 6 cars involved in the accident just before 8:30 a.m. no word on injuries, but we did see a ambulance on the scene here. firefighters in delaware rescued a man and a dog from the icy brandywine river last night. the animal got loose and fell through the ice. three people tried to save the dog and they fell in. when firefighters arrived a man and dog were in the water. crews used ladders to reach the man. firefighters climbed down to harness the dog and pull him up to safety.

philadelphia, in just a matter of days. take a live look behind me they finished boarding up the home just a few minutes ago, it sits next to a home that went up in flames a few weeks ago. >> i thought about it, can't be real. >> reporter: the terrible news man this morning jolted out of . the house across the street was on fire. >> i'm thinking okay, she isn't in there, i don't know if she is in there. they cameas standing out here for a long time. there is nothing you can do for a fire. i wish i could have done the flames broke out 3:30 a.m., a lady lives there by nobo lives on either side of the home. that gave the fire a head start before anyone noticed.

it was too late to save the unidentified woman despite there was a fire hydrant in front of the home and crews arriving in flee minutes. >> i have to say battalion 11 did a valiant drive getting inside, but we suffered a tragedy. >> you can see the smoke coming out of the house with the windows shut. >> reporter: this is the second fatal fire in philadelphia and the third death. over the weekend a fire lieutenant was trapped and killed trying to save a resident in a row home. the resident died. conditions to get into the structure has been immensely challenging for firefighters. >> firefighters have to deal with slippery conditions on ladders, hoses freeze and hydrant freeze, i want to thank the water department, red cross, l.and i all the agencies that come out and help us had to

endure the same conditions we've had to, they have done a tremendous job. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is under investigation. they are trying to figure out if the home had working smoke detecters. they are urging residents to check your smoke detecters, that makes a huge difference that means the difference between life and death. jeanette reyes channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. investigators are still looking for the cause of a fire that killed a philadelphia firefighters anne resident. 42 lieutenant matt luterno died when a burning row home collapsed on top of him on colorado street. a second victim was found in the home, a third was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. funeral arrangement have not been announced. firefighters with called to north tillman street at
