they say good-bye tonight with the funeral tomorrow. >> reporter: that is right. there is a steady stream of people since the doors opened at 4:30, this is the first of two public viewings. every now and then there is a line that forms around the block and it's a snapshot of how respected letourneau was in the community. the line of mourners wrapped around the block friends and colleagues and strangers waited to pay their respects. >> and there was community people in line and that didn't start yet. it sends a message that people out there do care. >> a caravan of flashing lights and police cars escorted the body of lieutenant matthew letourneau. he was pinned under rubble battling a two alarm fire in philadelphia. >> there could be a result of you not coming home one day and

unfortunately this happened. >> they are taking the row home apart piece by piece to determine the cause of the fire and the reason for the collapsed floor. >> it was really sad and tragic. he was an all around guy. >> the 11 year veteran was assigned to 45 and served at 11 and ladder 77. >> we took pride in knowing our trade and he fit that mold. the type of firefighter we all look up to being. >> even strangers stopped by to honor the fallen hero. >> he put his life on the line to protect all of us. >> something that you never want to hear. with anyone but especially with, you know a fallen firefighter. it's just hard on everybody. >> now, a second viewing will be held tomorrow morning from 9:00

back to normal but it won't be easy. a barricade situation with a man and police turned the neighborhood upside down. sara bloomquist is live at hampshire road. and the scene of this police drama. you have the full story. >> reporter: hours after this hours long standoff ended the neighborhood is still cordoned off as police wrap up the investigation and finalize the collection of evidence. throughout the entire ordeal officers did not fire a single shot. when they did get inside they found the 29-year-old gunman dead and his fatal injuries were self inflicted. this video shows the s.w.a.t. team moving in on the home at 10 and hampshire road in sickler swill with an intense standoff that lasted 12 hours. >> his injuries were not caused by law enforcement action and we

recovered a female from the residence that was not injured. >> the standoff started at 8:00 last night. the 24-year-old armed man started to fire at the first officers that arrived. they backed off and s.w.a.t. and trained negotiators were called in. >> trying to get him to come out over the loud speaker. >> neighbor were told to shelter in place and relayed what was happening to "action news." >> he said go inside the guy has a semi and could reach to where we were so -- >> residents arrived after the standoff started waited in the nearby parking lot communicating with nearby loved ones. >> just be safe and lock down. i'm be by the phone. >> bullets punctured this armored vehicle and no officers were injured. >> we never had the vehicle

fired upon before but this time. i truly believe it saved officers lives. >> investigators did find a handgun and rifle inside of the house. the woman that was inside of the home was taken to the police department to be requested. out of an abundance of caution two local school districts were closed for the day because of the proximity of this violence. we don't know what set this off or the identity of the gunman. sara bloomquist, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. fire gutted a landmark diner overnight in camden county and investigators are trying to determine if the blaze was an accident or set on purpose. firefighters were called to the country town diner in berlin at 11:30 last night and flames were shooting through the second floor when crews arrived. the diner changed hands last year and the owner held a grand

opening in october. >> dr. james kauffman and his co-defendant fred augello when before a judge for the first time this week after being charged with killing april kauffman. >> is there a motion? >> the first appearances took own minutes, the first appearance for dr. james offer man and ferdinand augello. both charged with the murder for hire blot that took the life of april half man in 2012. >> we said he is not guilty from the beginning. a falling out from among the two and augello discussed having kauffman murdered. >> according to the states paper there's was information to kill dr. kauffman, the conspiracy is about the killing of my client.

authorities are taking this seriously and kauffman was moved to the county jail miles from augello. >> augello is charged with conspiracy to commit the murder of james kauffman. and the illegal drug venture started in 2011 and in 2012 april kauffman embroiled into a bitter divorce threatened to expose the venture. for years there was little to report. >> there was no magic tip. there was no magic include clue it was just simply good police work. >> as this drug/murder for hire case moves forward one pesh will not be the courtroom. the man that authorities say was paid $20,000 to do the actual killing, he is dead, he died of a drug overdose 18 months after april kauffman was murdered.

john rawlins, channel 6 "action news." and new details have eamericaned about the investigation into a penn student. the body of blaze bernstein was found in a park in california on tuesday. the student was home for winter break. according to a search warrant an investigator says that bernstein's friend appeared to be nervous talking to investigators and that the friend had scratched up his hands and dirt under his fingernails and avoided touching doors in the sheriff's office. and no arrested were made. >> the university of pennsylvania offered a counseling session for those friends upset with his death. and the city council is holding a hearing on the trump administration's plan to cut the budget at the environmental protection agency and they
