another sign that winter is not loosening its grip any time soon. there was an ice jam on the delaware river today. that clog prompted a flood warning near trenton as the ice causes that river to rise. it is monday afternoon, i'm brian taff. >> and i'm monica malpass in for sharrie williams. the big story on "action news" is the backlog of icebergs causing concern along the river and the snow headed our way tomorrow prompting an accuweather alert. >> all right. walter perez live outdoors this afternoon. walter, you saw the river rising firsthand there today. >> reporter: something to see i got to tell you brian and monica. we'll give you a live look. we're at the intersection of river road and ferry road and this icy jam is the result of ice o clogging up the water flow at the base of the calhoun street bridge and a little further down as well at the trenton makes bridge an awesome sight for sure but a bit of flooding has resulted as well. what is a spectacle for the

rest of us is cause for concern for people who live along this stretch of the delaware river but many neighbors here tell us as long as the nearby canal doesn't flood, they feel relatively safe. >> you can get a pinch point up in yardley where the yardley inn is. floods there and down here and sort of creates an island so the last time it happened i think it was 06 i'm not sure but we were mandatory evacuated. >> reporter: so far the canal has not flooded and flooding from the river has been relatively minor. the problem that has developed here is quite simply an ice jam and that forces the current to accumulate in isolated areas. so far the worst of it is here at the intersection of river road and ferry road in lower makefield and so local officials are urging commuters to avoid the area. >> at this time the river continues to be ice dammed along the calhoun street bridge zero the river is unpredictable. the water could still rise a little bit or even some ice flows could come up on the red way. >> reporter: all right, back out live on the scene here the

so-called flood action stage is 17 feet. minor flooding begins here at 20 feet and it's expected to stay under 21 feet so certainly could have been a lot worse. meanwhile obviously the intersection of river and ferry roads remains closed to traffic at this time. and will remain so for quite awhile as it would seem. reporting live from lower makefield, walter perez channel6 "action news." back to you. >> walter thank you. as we mentioned we are also monitoring the possibility of some snow later in the week. as we get a first check now on the accuweather forecast. >> let's take it over to meteorologist adam joseph. >> what we're tracking here is all that flood warning which is in that small area of bucks county and also parts of northern parts of hunterdon county on the other side of the delaware river that flood warning and in effect until 5:30 p.m. so for another how and a half and it's set to expire we'll see if the national weather service extends it but at this point expiring at 5:30 near yardley

ewing morrisville and on the brink of trenton. as we take a look at the gauge along the delaware in trenton, it was at flood stage of 20 feet early this morning. it is cresting right now at about 20.4 feet so less than a half a foot above its flood stage and then should fall below its flood stage as we get into the overnight hours. as we look at storm tracker6 live the other story is that clipper system which is over the great lakes associated with a cold front the ohio valley, the tennessee valley. not a lot of snow but it's going to be pushing to the south and east slowly. the timing is delayed just a little bit with it. but we do have winter weather advisories that go up at 5 o'clock tomorrow morning and last through 6:00 a.m. on wednesday morning northern chester montgomery bucks county doylestown green lane exton honey brook all the way north up into the poconos for that light accumulating snowfall so no advisory yet for the city of philadelphia and for the timing of this snow, it is cloudy for most areas tomorrow. i'm telling the kids do your homework for tomorrow. only a little bit of light

snow in the lehigh valley during the day tomorrow especially in the afternoon and evening but the steadiest of the snow for most of us does not come in until after 11:00 p.m. tomorrow night through 7:00 a.m. on wednesday morning and the biggest concern will be that wednesday morning rush hour. not tomorrow morning or tomorrow evening but of wednesday morning. we'll let you know how much snow to expect wednesday guys coming up in a little bit. >> thank you so much adam. now turning to our eagles with a trip to the super bowl on the line the birds learned last night they will be taking on the minnesota vikings. >> and get this, even though the game is being played here and the eagles are the number one seed, they are the underdogs again. jeff skversky joining us with a look at the nfc championship. we're not getting any respect still. >> that's fine by the eagles. they actually love it. they're relishing their role since carson wentz went down a month ago they have been under dogs in a sense nobody believed they would get this far. not a lot of people believe they will get to the super bowl even outside of our area,

so doug pederson using it as motivation with his players. you better believe they're going to keep the dog masks with the eagles on the doorstep of their first super bowl trip in 13 years. doug pederson says not to do anything crazy, do what got him here. he'll remind his coaches and players be yourself do your job to beat the vikings. pederson was on the edge of his seat in his office last night watching the vikings improbable walkoff against the saints. both teams coming off emotional wins. pederson says the challenge is to refocus with a shot at the super bowl at state as brian and monica said eagles underdog again for the nfc title game but pederson says he believes in this team even though many do not. >> this is a really good group of men that play well together. have battled through adversity all season long with the

afternoon. three hours later officers allegedly found him passed out behind the wheel of his car at an intersection with his young daughter in the back seat. boris is currently on administrative leave without pay pending an internal investigation. >> on this martin luther king jr. day a church in the overbrook section of philadelphia is calling for an end to gun violence. this is the display outside the overbrook presbyterian church on city avenue. the church partnered with the heeding god's call ministry to create the memorial to the lost. the memorial includes a t-shirt for every gun victim murdered in philadelphia during 2017. 265 shirts are on display there. >> time for a check of that "action news" traffic report on a holiday monday. >> gina gannon in for matt pelman. >> a lot of folks are off in observance for martin luther king jr. day but we're seeing a lot of extra delays. not heavy rush hour delays. i think it's because a lot of folks are off and hopefully they're doing their day of service but we just had an earlier accident that wrapped up in delaware county on 95

southbound right around the 476's gore point here. that accident has just wrapped up but we still have a backup if you're traveling out on that southbound side. expect delays from ridley park to just about the blue route area. elsewhere on 95 things are pretty good. want to show you the big picture. you can see we have a lot more green on the map. what we are used to seeing for a rush hour but you can see that schuylkill expressway not budging. still jammed on the westbound side and jammed from city avenue all the way out to conshohocken. also it looks like that westbound side as well we're seeing a bit of a delay around the vine street expressway. i want to draw your attention to an issue that we have going on right now in the area of bridgeport. we were telling you about this earlier. on route 202 right at the dekalb street bridge it's completely shut down because of a homicide. it's closed between front and washington street so definitely try to avoid this area if you can route 202 shut down between front street and washington street because of a homicide investigation. please avoid that area if you can. in salem we were telling you

got together. >> reporter: for 10s of thousands of volunteers in the delaware valley, today was anything but a day to catch up on sleep. >> martin luther king day is not a day to sleep in at all. you know what i mean? it's a delay of delivering help. >> reporter: national record of 150,000 people participated in the 23rd annual greater philadelphia martin luther king day of service. it's the country's oldest and largest event of its kind. todd bernstein is the founder and director. >> i think we're a divided nation and i think that that has certainly mean compounded in recent times so i think now is perhaps more important than in recent years for us to try to come together. >> reporter: thousands did just that including senator bob casey, philadelphia schools superintendent dr. dr. william hite and governor tom wolf. >> that's what today is about. dr. king was about service above all. we need to create a fair society for everyone.

martin luther king jr. day as president at his florida estate. president dedicated his weekly address to dr. king and tweeted "that king's dream is the american dream." on friday the president encouraged the public to observe this day with active civic work and community service. in honor of dr. king's legacy. he had no public events instead playing golf at trump international golf club in west palm beach. >> reporter: agency responsible for sending out a missile alert in hawaii is changing its policies. it was sent out after an employee accidentally hit the wrong button but it took some 40 minutes for the agency to retract that alert. now officials say that's because the application to cancel the alarm wasn't loaded. they say from now on that app will be ready. the employee responsible has been removed from the position to under go training. >> cvs promising to change its beauty department to focus more on rule beauty. the drugstore chain says ads

fire pit, always a great place to be an great view. temperature right now at the freezing point so we've come up from over the weekend. the dewpoint still pretty low at 22 degrees so still very dry air with those lips being chapped and skin being itchy because of the lower moisture content in the atmosphere. winds out of the northeast right now at 8 miles an hour. as we go into our tuesday, if you look at the day planner here it's actually going to get warmer tomorrow, near 40 degrees. most of the day is dry with just a lot of clouds, maybe a little bit of sun, especially south of philadelphia but it's not really until the evening, you see 8:00 p.m. when you start to see snowflakes falling in and around the philadelphia area. satellite and radar we're tracking a clipper system. that will spark a new storm off of our coast but it's going to be very slow to get here so for tonight lots of clouds and not as cold as it was the last few nights. 22 in the suburbs, 26 degrees for center city with that east-northeasterly wind. tomorrow temperatures near 40

or better especially south of philadelphia, 36 up in the lehigh valley. a mostly cloudy day with most of the snow coming in at night. not during the day tomorrow. we'll confirm that for you on future tracker. this is 11 o'clock tomorrow morning. you start to see some of those very light snow showers north and west of the lehigh valley. and notice it barely moves at all during the evening rush tomorrow, maybe a little snow lehigh valley, reading but most of the area it is dry for both rushes tomorrow. it's really not until 11:30 that it even starts to collapse a little bit. we're still dry as that ocean storm is starting to develop and then everything comes together early wednesday morning. this is 7:00 a.m. for that morning rush which is when most of the snow will be falling so that's the timing. it's the wednesday morning rush to follow and then wednesday afternoon snow ending at the shore by 4 o'clock we start to see that sunshine returning to the north and west. so, again, the key times, low impact scale for the rushes tomorrow, even 11:00 p.m. it's 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on

>> special parents being honored for mlk day today in the germantown section. parents at roosevelt elementary school who helped paint and beautify the building got kudos from some local politicians today. organizers were among the dozens saying thanks. 200 volunteers helped at the elementary school which is a host site for the stronger partners, stronger schools project. meantime a cheltenham high school the sound of drums fill the air. >> ♪ bucket drummers and dancers took the stage with traditional african themed performances. students from all seven schools in the cheltenham district brought their service projects to the high school to work on today. as a part of the day on they made craft bags for children in the hospital even organized donations for the homeless.

covers along the sidewalk apparently evidence some drivers have not been so fortunate. the holiday deep freeze followed by last week's thaw and heavy rain conspired to produce a new crop of potholes leading to greater numbers of impact damage tires and bent rims, limping into this pep boys on allegheny avenue as nick condo the store's assistant service manager. >> past two days probably about 10 vehicles with damage to wheels and tires. >> reporter: reports of problems along the winding unforgiving curves of lincoln drive, pavement often giving way around drain inlets such situations can be tough on tires. the pothole season getting an early start this year since january 1st the streets department has been busy says chief highway engineer steven lorenz. >> we did go out and fill potholes as of last friday we filled 1600 potholes across the city of philadelphia. >> reporter: pothole damage can be costly. aaa estimates billions nationally. as for an individual driver. >> one went to $500 roughly.

>> reporter: ouch. >> it does hurt. >> reporter: philadelphia has 2500 miles of streets excluding interstates. the best way to alert authorities to a pothole, call 311 or use the 311 app where you can upload a photo of the offending road hazard and give its location. >> 311 will refer it over to the streets department and at that time we'll have inspectors go out and take a look to see if it is a pothole that is the streets department's responsible. if not we'll refer it to other entities such as penndot or septa. >> reporter: well, now, given the forecast right now the streets department is focused on the idea of snow sometime in the next 24 to 36 hours but with the weather warming up as it has been predicted, the hope is that they'll have crews back out on thursday focusing on potholes finding them and filling them. live in east falls, john rawlins, channel6 "action news." >> a never ending issue but a big one. thanks john. now to our accuweather alert as john mentioned we're dry today but we're looking

a mosaic of shapes and colors surrounding a central message which reads kindness is king. and this group at frankford high school was also busy sprucing things up today with some paint. volunteers helped paint murals on the walls in the hallways throughout the school. city of greater philadelphia coordinated this event in dr. king's honor. >> volunteers in chester county helped make the day special. they gathered at paoli fire company for two hours of service projects. representative hosted the event and folks in the 157th district were busy all helping local families in need with several hands-on projects making book marks and more. all to honor the legacy of dr. martin luther king. and more than 200 residents and students in new jersey took part in the mlk jr. day of service. these volunteers lined up at the voorhees town center creating teen kits and bandana pillows for hospitalized children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. the event was organized by the

happened. kristen is a mommy blogger. her site shoulders and stilettos offers all types of tips for mom. she named her son teddy and they call him teddy bear as a nickname that which has the same initials as taco bell tb and promises that was mere a coincidence. is there any bigger talker than the eagles today. turns out the birds big win over the weekend may have the linc looking more like a kennel next weekend. this is lane johnson beneath that dog mask his tongue in cheek protest due to the fact the pundits are calling eagles underdogs. jaime apody interviewed johnson after the game and he channeled his inner german shepherd for that. johnson's dogged demonstration caught on. the masks quickly sold out through various retailers on amazon. eagles lapping it up as well tweeting today that yes, the masks will be allowed at the linc this weekend for the nfc championship game in fact they're kind of encouraging it.

now on the vine street expressway i like what i'm seeing here. we are seeing delays crossing town. we're delay free on that eastbound side but we're seeing delays on the westbound side so if you're traveling from broad street up through 76, that westbound side still hanging on with a delay so make sure you're allowing for more time there. on the pennsylvania turnpike northeast extension a disabled vehicle blocking the right lane just before quakertown but i'm not seeing any delays associated with that so there you should be fine but just a heads up. i want to show you the big picture because we have delays out there on a few of your major roads but it's nothing too major. 95 we have that backup around allegheny so give yourself more time out there. monica. >> thank you gina. well, as part of a martin luther king jr. day of service project, contractors and students came together building garden planters today. volunteers from the general building contractors association worked with students here in the kingsessing section of philadelphia and once the planters are built they'll be moved to the cecil street gardens for the community to grow and learn about fresh healthy produce. people in wilmington,

lehigh valley and also up in the poconos. this region under that winter weather advisory which technically starts at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning but that's a little sooner than the snow is actually going to be there. through 6 o'clock on wednesday morning, this is where the highest snow totals will fall and mainly the accumulating snow will be tomorrow night despite this area could see some snowflakes during the day as well. as you look at temps we're hovering around freezing across much of the area give or take a degree or two to the north and west, all points to the south and east. the coolest spot up in the poconos with your temp right now of 19 degrees. satellite and radar, it is a weak clipper system, low pressure over the great lakes. it's trailing cold front sweeping through the tennessee valley right now. this will slowly work to the east and then it is going to spark a new storm south of new england. we don't benefit from that storm. we just get some quick snow out of the actual front. so, for tonight lots of clouds and not as cold as it was the last few nights. 22 in the suburbs, 26 degrees

for center city. and here's your day planner for tuesday. really not bad. it is cloudy and not too chilly. temps are growing to go to around 40 degrees for tomorrow. and as you see with the icon here hour by hour you don't even see snow falling five, 7 o'clock in and around the philadelphia area. in fact, when we look at future tracker, i'm not even going to show you all the way up through 6:00 p.m. because little will happen throughout the day tomorrow. at 6:00 p.m., you do see some light snow right on the brink of the lehigh valley, parts of berks county and notice it doesn't even move from 6:00 p.m. to midnight at all. it stays up in those northwestern areas. then it finally collapses down, allowed to move as that coastal low is developing. this is 5:30 on wednesday morning, the start of that wednesday morning rush hour and as we get through 9:30 in the morning starting to end to the north and west but still snowing in new jersey, southern parts of delaware and then by late in the afternoon snow is going off the coast forks:30 and sunshine is returning in those -- 4:30 and sunshine is returning.

where we have the advisories two to 4-inches of snow. in the poconos most that of accumulating tuesday night early wednesday morning. one to 2 inches for a good part of the delaware valley tuesday night into wednesday morning and far southern areas a coating to an inch millville dover atlantic city down to wildwood. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 40 degrees for a high tomorrow with most of the snow coming in at night into wednesday morning when we have that accuweather alert for that wednesday morning rush. drying out in the afternoon with some sun returning, 35. it's chilly but bright here thursday of 37 degrees. milder come friday with sun, 43 and we're hitting near 50 on saturday with sun and clouds and for the eagles, even warmer, mid-50's with clouds, some sunshine and some rain possible on monday at 56 degrees. so, an extended january thaw is on the way after some snow and again it's that wednesday morning commute that will be the trickest of them all over the next 36 to 48 hours.

weather center. melissa what's going on. >> yeah, monica and brian, first we've got that flood warning that's just up for bucks and mercer counties because of the jamming in the river, the ice jamming to be more specific. so, this will stay up for ewing yardley morrisville even portions of trenton as minor flooding is occurring. so, as we look at trenton here, and what we are expecting in the delaware river, just minor flooding. flood stage is at 20 feet and this is expected to crest at 20 feet at 7:00 p.m. then the waters will slowly recede as we go throughout the overnight hours. minor flooding is a concern but any time you get that ice piling up it does allow the waters to rise in the river so it is a bit of a concern. fast forward into tuesday and into wednesday and we've got that accuweather alert. a winter weather advisory has been issued for areas north and west of the i-95 corridor, lancaster honey brook allentown quakertown green lane up to the poconos. included in that advisory it goes up at 5:00 a.m. o
