12:01 pm
in after knocking the vikings out of the playoffs last night eagles are heading to the super bowl for the first time in 13 years. right now the birds and the fans are making plans for the big game. >> it is monday afternoon, i'm rick williams. >> i'm alicia vitarelli in for sarah bloomquist. >> we're expecting to hear from eagles head coach doug peterson any moment now. we'll go to the nova care complex with the coach and jamie apody is standing by. let's listen to the coach first. >> did you give any help? >> i saw big v played very well. we did help him from time to time, but there were times when we had to be on the island and block a defensive end who had a heck of a year. had a a lot of confidence in v
12:02 pm
this is what we've seen in him his maturity and growth as a left tackle and played extremely well last night. >> how much do you get done installation wide this -- wise? >> we have to get preparations in and next week get up to there implement the plan and review and work, but yeah we can get a lot done this week. >> what did you do last night? >> i just went home, some family in town, my mom and boys from school were in town and friends from louisiana we enjoyed the moment. >> reporter: did you sleep? >> 2:00 a.m., finally slept. [inaudible].
12:03 pm
jeffrey lori talked about when he hired you [inaudible]. >> well, obviously i only know what i know. and and i feel like i need to put our team in the best possible situations during the week, during the season, during the year. for me it all starts back on otas, if i'm not talking about situational football back then, we're not going to have a two minute drive in the biggest game of our careers and lives like we did last night. if i don't caulk about red zone back -- talk about red zone back
12:04 pm
then, then we can't perform in the red zone like we did all season. if i don't talk about third downs and implement them offensively and defensively, we can't be one of the top defenses and offenses in the national league. that's preparing our guys and then having great coordinators, having three great coordinators that i lean on to put great game plans together, not only the schemes, but commune indicate and teach the game plan during the week and the season and having our team ready to go. you know, i felt that all season our players were you know well prepared during the week, i felt like they were energic and ready to go every sunday. these last two post seasons
12:05 pm
game, i think even from my standpoint as a play caller, staying aggressive, staying maybe a little unorthodox, maybe the 4th downs, 2 point conversions all that is a part of it, but i just think if i don't prepare the team that way in being smart and being that sort of staying ahead of the game so to speak, then you're playing ketchup and you're not winning the -- catch up and you're not winning the games. >> how does your mood help? >> having been in the locker room, understanding the dynamic of what a team what a team needs and should feel, how we should practice, how we should play, when to take the pads off when to put the pads back on, all
12:06 pm
that is part of that emotional intelligence that we all, and i try to strive for and have with the guys i think that relationship has gone a long way this season. >> you have a full week [inaudible] >> yeah we talked back then this was a sort of precursor for hopefully this opportunity. and kind of going through it, a little bit, with the team hotel, the meetings and travel to the practice site and the media obligations and things like that, having been through it, it makes it easier going up to minneapolis, it's just on a grander bigger stage, obvious, so the attention will be a lot
12:07 pm
more, a lot more distractions and pulling on coaches and players and personnel, you know having gone through it in l.a. really has given us a leg up now going up there in a week. >> reporter: you guys had two weeks back here in 96, that was a long time ago is it helpful to you now? >> yeah, very helpful. it goes back to getting the guys prepared and get the film study in and review and implementing the plan during the week, you know just building towards the game, but that's the way we did it then, and really not much has changed since. [inaudible]. >> we didn't do anything before the game. nothing before the game. everything now is from today going forward. >> everything is normal, but
12:08 pm
obviously it's not going to be normal, how do you manage that with the players? >> well, i just got to communicate and you know keep things on a rigid, tight schedule and make sure the guys are focused on job at hand, you know they even said it after the game, last night in the locker room, there's a lot of under finished business still to do and there's one game left, one game left in the season and we've come this far and want to make sure we stay focused and we have a great locker room, as you guys know and trust the leaders of the team to get the job done. [inaudible] >> you know, it's until i'm out there, in the community and listening, what i have seen on tv an what i experienced last
12:09 pm
night with our fans, and just even today in the text messages and e-mails and everything that you get it's pretty incredible, it's pretty incredible, to have played here along time ago and kind of experience the passion then, to what they are feeling today, i'm excited for them, for our fans. they are a lot like us we've been underdogs for the last couple of weeks and our fans feel that, and they understand that, and you know we're excited to have won the last two games obviously. we hope to have the entire eagles nation up in minneapolis for a game in two weeks. >> reporter: he talked about how you wound up, how important was that for the foundation? i think it's important, he reminded me again last night after the game that i was the only coach to go out and work
12:10 pm
him out as a player leading up to that draft. it guess a long way. it goes a long way in his confidence and my confidence in him, understanding that dynamic, we separated and went different ways to come back together and do the things we've been able to do and he's been able to do it's not only a credit to him but it is to the overall study we did back in 2012. >> reporter: you had to overcome a lot of injuries over the past year [inaudible]. >> it says everything, it says, too, that, it's the next man up mentality. it also means that you have veteran players that keep things together and good coaching staffs and it's just it's a tribute to the players and
12:11 pm
everyone involved that they can keep things going even through that adversity. [inaudible] building around carson and now nick foles that kind of like the model? >> one it's extremely hard to win any game each week. it's extremely hard to win. i mean really, you look at last year's team, last year's season we had a chance to win some of the close games we lost, we had a chance to win a few more of those, but we didn't. but we were able to do that this year and you continue to learn from previous experiences and you know to take carson in his second year and do the thing we were able to do with him.
12:12 pm
a lot of it is on the player. it's on carson to study and prepare and work out in the off season and getting together in north dakota and do the thing they did prepares you for the season and some of the success you have, it's just whether that's a blueprint or model or whatever, i think every team is different. i do think when you look at guys whether they are free agents or in the draft you want to make sure their character fits with what i am preaching, what i am saying to the team, so that when we bring them in, they can just roll up their sleeves and go to work like everybody else. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> i don't know, you know, i
12:13 pm
could, the fact that he's had a chance to work with our guys for the past month. there's a lot more confidence there, they are on the same page, the run game obviously helps with the play-action stuff we've done. helps him, you know, listen, that's who nick is, and just having time with the offense, has been able to open up some of the opportunities down the field. >> reporter: watching last night's game, the offensive line after rewatching it have they played any better this season? >> probably not, i think this is the best they have played as a unit. you know, all 9 ware across the board from lane to big v. these guys, we have not talked a whole lot about them this year, this is a group that coach alan does a tremendous mend job
12:14 pm
preparing the guys they have a great run plan. they come to work on tuesday, thursday, friday and get the job done and sometimes it's not always pretty, it doesn't have to be. at the end of the day we find a way and they find a away and they did it last night and put a good performance together. >> reporter: what qualities do you see in this team that make you confidence they will handle the moment and the stage. >> of course it's been a while since you know not one the eagles have been there, but we have a couple of players on the team that have been there as early as last season, you know we can lean on those guys obviously and some of the experiences that some of the other players have been to the super bowl and all that. listen, i trust my leaders of the team, i trust that they will
12:15 pm
keep this group focused own grounded and it's, it's an all hand on deck mentality. they will come to work, you know ready to go, eager to go. they have been able to do it all season. even the l.a. trip is a great kind of spotlight they handled their business in l.a. to get that win gives you a lot of confidence going into this week. [inaudible] how much do you lean on those two to prepare? >> not a whole lot, they are different are we're different we'll prepare the same way, that we always have you know, i'm sure they will have comments later in the week, but it's just
12:16 pm
a matter of us getting ourselves ready to go and preparing for this game. >> reporter: is it daunting to face the patriots in this game after all that was said. >> listen everything everybody in the league envies their success and rightfully so, they have been there done that, and that something every other team would love to have. you know it's impressive, obviously, and it is well respected and well documented, you know at the same time, we're just going to prepare the same and try to block out all the noise, there's going to be a lot written both extremes, you know, but, again our guys have been resilient they have been able to block that noise out, once the ball is teed up and kicked off, just trust our players, trust
12:17 pm
our schemes and play football. >> reporter: [inaudible]. >> why was i less concerned other not as concerned? >> reporter: what were you saying behind the scenes about you not being concerned. >> they just knew -- welk after the giants -- well, after the giants game it was a great game, we needed a game or two to clinch home field and all that kind of stuff. just needed time. just needed time. we didn't have a whole lot of time, but the same, we needed time to work and get nick kind of caught up and going back to training camp, he missed training camp time reps with those guys and carson was taking over the snaps, it is just the way it is. is to it's just a matter of him getting comfortable again playing the quarterback position
12:18 pm
and being on the same page with our guys, so you kind of slowly see the progression of the success that he has had since that time and for us, internally that's what it was about just getting time and being able to work together. >> reporter: the focus last week about the defense when you were putting the game plan together [inaudible] with you pretty optimistic. >> you never know until you play the game if you're scheme works, but listen at the end of the day there's no magical offensive or defensive play or special teams play, it comes down to players making plays. our guys did that last night. yeah, you do feel, i'm sure the vikings felt the same way very comfortable and confident in their plan, too, a lot of times it just comes down, it always comes down to the players,
12:19 pm
that's the -- bottom line it comes down to players making plays. >> reporter: did the players mention how loose they were going into the game, does that come from you or are you trying to set a personality? >> it's the most relaxed i've seen our guys all season, i do want them to feel relaxed. if i am uptight they will feel it and react the same way. let their personality show, let them have fun enjoy the moment. this is why we coach and play for these opportunities and moments right here, i felt like our guys were not only well prepared, but relaxed going into >> reporter: [inaudible].
12:20 pm
>> he just keeps talking to him, mentoring him, teaching him how to be a professional, how to play the defensive end spot and you know, chris is just a great mentor to daric and some of the young players on the team and daric continues to grow and seems to be making big plays in these games down the stretch. i do feel like chris and his leadership ability has helped him do that. >> thank you. >> reporter: when youwhen you we back in the office? >> doug peterson addressing reports in the crowd, excitement building from last night. the team to be focused own aggressive and unorthodoxed as
