alicia vitarelli is joining us. in the news the president starts his first overseas trip of the year. >> and ahead of the super bowl we hear from church doug peterson and how he is preparing for the big game. but the big story on "action news" is the man on allegedly shooting a philadelphia police officer. it was two years ago when edward archer opened fire on a cop car wounding officer jessie hartnett in philadelphia. trish hartman is in the courtroom for the opening statement. she joins us live with more. >> reporter: rick, both the prosecution and defense gave opening statementses this morning. and even before that as each charge was read edward archer rather than pleading guilty or not guilty he said he did not plead to anyone but allah.

>> the prosecution said during the trial that jurors will see video and physical evidence and hear from witnesses on the night of january 27th 2015. jessie hartnett was hit three times sitting in his patrol car in philadelphia. his left arm was shattered by gun fire leaving him unable to work as a police officer. and he has had 11 surgeries be the video shows archer shooting at at cruiser at close range and how he kicked the vehicle door open and chased after archer firing seven shots and archer later confessed saying he did it in the name of islam. and they hailed officer archer a hero but said put aside sympathy and focus on the law. >> this is a major trial.

that we are dealing with. and as was stated inside. you know the attempted assassination of a philadelphia police officer. not two days after i was sworn in as a matter of fact. i will never forget it obviously. >> the homicide detective took the stand after the opening statements and the young says he expected the trial to last for about two weeks. channel 6 "action news." brand new surveillance video this afternoon shows a violent home invasion in progress. watch as a man carries a baby out to his car in the olney section of philadelphia. and it was just after 3:00 when a criminal dressed as a mailman ambushed the viction tim on north 2nd street. and the suspect pulled a gun and forced the man into his home. and then three other men come inside and they zip tied the victim and roughed him up. police are looking for all four suspects and they got away with

$5,000 plus the iphone and keys to his house and his car. fortunately he had just minor injuries and the baby was unharmed. >> time to talk temperatures. it's the coldest day of the week and you feel it outside as you look live from sky 6 hd showing you the view of center city on a sunny enbrisk thursday afternoon. meteorologist david murphy joins us live with the first check of the forecast. hopefully we warm up in the next day or so. >> for now we are look agent cloud cover on satellite receding and getting off the coast. we talked about how this morning it was looking cloudy in neighborhoods but as expected we see things brighten up and add isal clouds to the west trying to make it out later in the day. and generally speaking mostly sunny skies for most of your day. and still cold. 33 in philadelphia. 32 in trenton. 34 in wilmington and the freezing mark in reading. and 35 in millville and 33 in

cape may. we have winds that are blustery, 10 to 20 miles per hour gusting higher than that at times and the windchill values are looking like 22 in trend and 25 in wilmington. you get the picture. if you are extending your stay outside today you want to make sure you not only have a heavy coat on and layers and the extra gear. i was out a while ago and happy i was bundled up. 37 by 2:00 and high of 38 around 3:00 and then you see how the numbers fall. by 7:00 or 8:00 we are back below the freezing mark and 28 at midnight tonight. the winds running 10 to 20 miles per hour gusting as high as 25 and the windchill values stay below freezing the rest are of afternoon and another set of numbers that give you the idea that it's a good idea to bundle up a bit. temperatures to the west, 33 in philadelphia and cincinnati similar 35 and you don't have to go too far away to get the numbers. 35e in atlanta and 56 in st. louis and high pressure sets

up over here tomorrow and that sets up a draw of the milder air into our neck of the woods and looking at a slightly better day for the weekend. >> thank you. our philadelphia eagles are back on the practice field today preparing for what is sure to be one of the biggest games of their lives. we just heard from head coach, doug peterson at nova care hoping to walk off the field victorious next week just like he did this past sunday after beating the vikings on home turf and the coach is sharing his mind set heading into what is sure to be a crazy week ahead. >> we have a game to play and it's not a vacation next week and you know my message to the team is just that. we'll prepare this week as if we are playing this weekend obviously. but we can sort of fine tune things. we just have to stay on top of our game.

sources tell "action news" they have interviewed the investigation. and questioned attorney general, jeff sessions, part of mueller's probe part of the probe seeing if the president committed obstruction of justice. >> and they hope to written and personal interview. and could take place in two to three weeks but any interview is subject to his attorneys. channel 6 "action news." back here in philadelphia police are looking for the person that fired a gun in center city. investigators say that a 24-year-old man was shot in the arm at 8:30 on the 5800 block of chestnut street. and police found the wounded victim as 16th and walnut. he is expected to survive. no arrests have been made. a new proposal could leave a city divided. it calls for civilian traffic

law enforcement officers nationwide are mourning the death of a colorado sheriffs deputy gunned down not line of duty. the 32-year-old deputy was killed when responding.

an all out manhunt continues for two other men involved. a 15-year-old boy suspected of opening fire on students at a school in kentucky will appear in court today. accused of killing two of his high school peers and wounding 18 others and prosecutors want to try him as an adult. and they have not shared a possible motive. marshall high school where the shooting happened remains closed. and a woman that made a miraculous recould havery after shot in the head. she was shot in the vegas massacre. and the gunman steven paddock killed 58 people and then himself. she was not expected to survive or walk and talk again. but with help from her doctors, the 33-year-old is learning to you to do every day tasks once again and the experience gave her a new resolve.

meteorologist, david murphy, back now with a closer look at the forecast and just brutal temperatures, seasonal temperatures. >> you will want to bundle up because the windchills are around the freezing mark. stormtracker 6 live double scan shows us we are dry and looking outside the not hard to find the sun. earlier clouds moved out and there is sky 6 hd looking live from the temple university camera down to university city. the sky is so clear you have a clear view of the walt whitman bridge in the distance on the horizon on the right sized injure screen kind of cool. 33 degrees and winds out of the northwest at 10 miles per hour.

and it feels like 25 degrees out there. so extra stuff and extra gear. here are the temperatures, freezing mark in trenton and reading and lancaster 31 and 34 in wilmington and millville 35 and dover 37 degrees and 33 in cape may. some of these points in inland south jersey and delaware remain milder the rest of the afternoon. satellite shows you the clouds we had at dawn, but boy did they sweep out and a question as to how much of a run this wave will have at us until sun down. susquehanna river is giving us trouble with an ice jam in place since the deep freeze and with the thaw going on you see breaks in the ice and all of that extra liquid going into the river is pushing water to either side and also the ice blocking up against trees and bridges is guiding water to the sides. so we have a flood watch in effect and in place along the

delaware river all the way from bush kill, through belvedere and easton. the susquehanna river is the only watch there. and a similar situation on the northern delaware. in through here until 4:00 this afternoon and the very least the potential of flooded roads on either side of the river due to the ice jam that is breaking up a bit. lehigh valley lots of sun and brisk and cold and 36 degrees and feeling like below freezing all the way. shore 38 and sunny and chilly and breezy. and philadelphia mostly sunny and high of 39 degrees and winds 25 miles per hour. and you'll want the extra gear as the windchills are raw. 25 in philadelphia tonight and the winds die down overnight and tomorrow the high pressure is in place and that does a couple of things for us. it knocks the winds down because of the proximity of the high and secondly you'll wind up with a southerly flow and get a milder

feel to the package and 45 for a high tomorrow and less wind feeling better. brisk and colder than it was yesterday than today. high of 39 and 45 not as bad in the afternoon and saturday 57 degrees for a high. sun gives way to increasing clouds and it's milder. at night the chance of rain and some of that rain could spill into sunday morning and even early sunday afternoon. right now we dry out during the day on sunday. and high of 54 and mid-40s on monday and perhaps a brief snow or rain shower at night. tuesday colder and 35. and the quick hits of cold and thursday we are back up to 40 and thursday about 50. so quick dips. >> i hear that super bowl sunday minneapolis could be 11 degrees. >> yes, it looks partly cloudy and maybe a flurry too. better inside of the stadium but forget tailgating. >> i think they will still do it. >> oh yeah. much more head in the next
