>> reporter: dr. james kauffman dead of an apparent suicide. officials with the hudson county correctional facility confirmed he died at 9:20 this morning. just last week the 68-year-old appeared in court. the atlantic county prosecutor's office accused him of conspiring to kill his wife 47-year-old april kauffman after authorities believe she threatened to expose an illegal drug operation the doctor was allegedly running out of his medical practice with the members of the pagan motorcycle gang. kauffman's coconspirator tried to have kauffman killed in jail. because of that authorities moved him to the hudson county correctional facility for his own safety. he was in their maximum security section. he had been inside atlantic

county facility since june on separate weapons charges. sources tell "action news" he left a lengthy note and ripped a sheet twisted and tied it around his neck to the lower bunk. he was found face down sources say it appears he died of suffocation. kim packs kauffman's stepdaughter long believed he was guilty of her mother's 2012 shooting death she filed a wrongful death lawsuit. her attorney spoke on her behalf today. >> he certainly he knew the evidence was mounting and i'm sure he listened to what the prosecutor had to say and i guess he made another choice. >> reporter: now, sources also tell us that kauffman was alone in his cell at the time because his bunk mate had left that morning for a court appearance. now, this is still all under investigation. the atlantic county prosecutor's office did release a statement saying they were notified by hudson

county authorities but they have no further comment. reporting live in linwood annie mccormick channel6 "action news." back to you. >> dramatic developments. annie, thank you. firefighters surrounded a home in bridgeton cumberland county working to put out a fire this afternoon. much of the damage was to the back of the home at the intersection of cottage avenue and fayette street. now, on the front you can see some of the screens knocked out. "action news" is told that there are no reports of any injuries and the cause of this fire still under investigation. >> all right, now to the super bowl bound eagles and the big headline today is someone who actually won't play a single down come the big game. >> yes, star quarterback carson wentz spoke to the media today for the first time since that knee surgery that ended his season. he not only talked about the team's trip to minneapolis but also how his recovery is coming along. >> "action news" sports reporter jaime apody live once again at the novacare complex and jaime went wentz, had a lat to stay. >> reporter: it was

unexpected. we were on the other side of the locker room saw this big ruckus, ran as fast as we could over to carson's locker. my photographer ricky harris was standing in a locker on a chair. we got it done. carson had a lot to say, he d1 of the things that came up today was not only did he tear his acl but also his lcl. that was concerning but he said it should not affect his recovery and he still hopes to be back for week one. here is what else carson wentz had to say. >> is it bittersweet at all. >> like i said earlier, there's that part of me, that human element that wants to be out there without a doubt. i'm a competitor. i set out with this goal in mind to get here and not only to get here but to win. obviously it looks different for me but the team is still plugging along. i couldn't be happy for them. >> reporter: carson what's your message for the fans. >> again, i can't thank them enough, the support.

victory over the vikings. police say they'll have a large number of officers guarding against property damage and violence next sunday night. they plan to announce street closures and other safety measures at some point next week. >> being optimistic of an eagles victory, we know the crowds are likely to be much larger. as a result, we've got to make sure we're prepared and we will be. >> police are also working with septa which expects to be a primary source of transportation to and from super bowl watch parties and local bars all across philadelphia. of course "action news" will be at the center of all things super bowl lii with live reports from minneapolis. they start this sunday. sharrie and i will be part of the "action news" team with the eagles from the very moment they touchdown until they bring home the win. we expect nothing less. and as always our coverage continues on the air on facebook and twitter and of course 6abc.com. >> several members of the philadelphia fire department were honored for taking the

next step in their careers. the department held its promotion and awards ceremony today. the honors were handed out at the performing arts center on temple's campus. more than two dozen members were elevated in rank led today of course by commissioner adam thiel. three firefighters were posthumously promoted including lieutenant kenneth green and gabriel lee. matthew letourneau was promoted from lieutenant to captain. he was killed while battling a row home in north philadelphia. >> police in fayette county thwarted what turned out to be a school shooting planned for today. it was today's harrowing discovery. a 14-year-old boy's bedroom stocked with weapons from that a semi automatic to a shotgun, a revolver machetes even throwing knives all found in this teenaged boy's room after he allegedly threatened to

kill four of his fellow students at uniontown area high school saying he simply didn't like them. city and state police went to the boy's home in henry clay township last night after they got a report from another student who says he overheard this threat on the school bus and even went so far as to record part of it. >> he indicated it would be extremely easy to sneak a gun into the school in his backpack. and he also indicated that he could use a sniper rifle from a distance or use a shotgun for mass casualties. >> very scary discovery. authorities have not publically identified the suspect here. he was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center he's been charged with terroristic threats possession of a firearm by a minor and attempting to cause a catastrophe. they called the student who reported this threat and his and parents heroes. brian. >> yes, if you see something,

say something. >> police in hamilton township released dashcam footage avenue police officer nearly run over during a traffic stop. officer dennis backer pulled someone over along harding highway last week when another car clipped his cruiser. the officer jumped out of the way just in time. my goodness. they say this is the exact reason why that move over law exists and why drivers need to obey it. now, the woman who nearly hit the officer did receive a traffic summons. >> wow. glad to see he's okay. >> yeah. time now for a he can which of the accuweather forecast. >> all right. standing outside today meteorologist adam joseph. adam it did warm up a bit today. >> it did. we have that sunshine, temperatures a little bit above where they were yesterday and the big difference is we don't have that wind that we had yesterday as we look at some of the numbers around the region, 42 right now in philadelphia. 38 in new york city as well as syracuse but warmer air just to the west. pittsburgh right now 53 degrees and that bubble of warmth continues into the ohio valley, the tennessee valley, 60's saint louis, memphis, 62

in wichita, so, yes, we are moving towards the warmer as we head into the upcoming weekend. but also we're tracking a system that will move across the great lakes. cold front arrives here the second half of the weekend, so as we get into late saturday night, early sunday morning, say, 9:00 a.m. sunday, you could see a good area of solid rain all the way from eastern southern new england down through the midatlantic states so again, we are tracking some rain for part of the weekend but not for tomorrow. upper 50's on saturday, the pick of the weekend with sunshine. rainy on sunday but it starts to dry out in the northwestern suburbs early in the afternoon on sunday and then cold sets in monday night into tuesday when there is a chance for some snow. we will chat about it all coming up in that full accuweather forecast in just a little bit, guys. >> adam thanks so much. time for a first check on the "action news" traffic report today. >> let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center today. hey, matt. >> hi, brian and sharrie. oftentimes the friday afternoon commute is one of our worst of the entire week.

i'm not sure if this afternoon's is going to be worse than yesterday afternoon's that was pretty bad with that big water main break there affected the northbound side of the roosevelt boulevard. but this afternoon we have problems again if you're headed toward the boulevard, although this time the issue is on the schuylkill expressway westbound side. it's a broken down school bus. kids like this when it happens on the way to school, not so much on the way home. but the broken down bus is taking out the left lane so slow going as you come westbound out of center city toward the boulevard, route one this afternoon. otherwise we're watching delays start to form along 95, 12 miles per hour northbound by the betsy ross bridge. 15 on the southbound side driving into that bright sunshine approaching the blue route and we had a crash on 42 southbound by 130 but luckily that is cleared out of the way. by the willow grove park mall there's some downed wires this afternoon blocking off moreland road, 63. i would stay over on 611 to get around that and in christiana we're getting reports of a bad crash along the southbound side of one at churchman's road close to the

in sports history. earlier this week a judge told team u.s.a. olympic dr. larry nassar "i just signed your death warrant today. one of the more than 150 women who stood up in a courtroom to describe their abuse and molestation at his hands sat down with the hosts of the view. gymnastics gold medalist alley raisman says she's happy nassar will spend the rest of his days in jail their fight for justice does not end here. >> my work and the army of survivors we're not done yet. we still have to hold these organizations accountable. united states olympic committee, u.s.a. gymnastics michigan state university they enabled this monster, they took his side over us. >> and to that end today michigan state university athletic director mark hollis tearfully announced his retirement. he is the second university official to step down amid sharp criticism over that school's handling of the sexual abuse allegations against nassar.

the philadelphia auto show. it's always a great show right there and of course right here on channel6. >> yeah. several of us will be there. i'll be there. adam i know you'll be there. >> on my dinner break. >> you need a fast car. >> bring me back rolls-royce. that's all i ask. >> small ask. >> now you're talking. fortunately in the winter season those kind of cars don't do well but we have a nice start to our weekend with some sunshine. live on sky6 over the commodore barry bridge we were splashed in lots of sunshine again today. we didn't have the wind today so it felt a little bit better but there is still a chill in the air and what is going on is we have cold air that is trapped right now near the ground. only a couple of thousand feet from the surface to just above us and it's called aloe level inversion in the weather world. what is that? well, inversion basically we have to look at the atmosphere in many different layers not only at the surface but up to about 5,000 feet for temperatures

and what's happening is our profile shows much colder air from 2000 feet below. above that, that's where you can see those temperatures are warming as that curve goes to the higher temperatures, so warm air, lighter than cold air, so it's trapped right above us and until this inversion breaks and we can get this line to go more straight, that's when we'll warm and that's going to happen as we get into the day tomorrow. so, there you go, weather 101. cold air dense and heavy. it's beneath that warm air above us so it can't go anywhere right now. 42 philadelphia, 40 allentown, 41 in reading, 38 in millville, 37 degrees in dover and 30's for the shore as well. satellite and radar, there's all that brilliant sunshine, clear sky that we have right now. some high clouds to the south and west. we'll see a few high clouds starting to stream in here as we get into the late afternoon hours for tomorrow but for tonight it is clear, not as cold, 20's for most of the suburbs, 32 philadelphia, 31 in dover on 33 for cape may. here is your saturday hour by hour.

really nice and really mild. the winds will be pretty strong, though. we're going to move it into the 50-degree range by 11 o'clock in the morning. mid-50's in the afternoon. the winds tomorrow could gust between 30, 40 miles an hour. that's the only thing you're going to notice tomorrow with that sun and warmth and then as we get into sunday, this happens. 8 o'clock in the morning rain for everybody but as we get into sunday afternoon 1 o'clock we'll start to sink that rain down to the south and some drying coming into the north and west but overall sunday kind of a murky day with a lot of clouds and rain especially south and east throughout the afternoon. so, your four day at 4:00 forecast here, mild but windy tomorrow at 57 degrees. rainy mild sunday, 54 degrees and again, if you're in the pennsylvania counties, hopefully we'll shut off that rain just after lunch. and then on monday, rain, our snow shower possible especially southeast near the shore, maybe some sun north and west, 46 and then there could be another little system on tuesday to bring some snow showers with temperatures of

all things super bowl 52 with live reports from minneapolis starting on sun. we'll-- sunday. we'll be there from the moment they touchdown to the moment they return with the championship trophy. keep up with the eagles and the "action news" team on air online and of course on social media. >> in other news today, fumes from a generator sent several students and teachers from a bustleton school to the hospital today. chopper6 hd was over lohse elementary on the 500 block of tomlinson road. officials say strong fumes from a generator being used on the roof got into the school just before noon. a number of students and teachers soon started to feel sick. and that led to an evacuation. all were taken to the hospital for observation. >> one of bill cosby's lawyers now wants to be taken off the comedian's case before his upcoming sexual assault retrial. samuel silver if i would papers to withdraw counsel today without explaining why. cosby will still be represented by four other lawyers when he's retried on

aggravated indecent assault charges in april. those lawyers are battling to get the case dismissed alleging misconduct by prosecutors and a lack of proof. cosby is accused of drugging and assaulting andrea constand back in 2004. his first trial ended in a mistrial. investigators are still trying to determine what sparked a fast moving house fire in philadelphia's frankford section this morning. flames ripped through the second floor of that home on the 5,000 block of valley street just before 7:00 a.m. one person escaped that fire by heading to the roof. they were rescued by firefighters a short time later. the fire was put out by 8 o'clock. >> time now for another check on our forecast as most of us get ready to celebrate the weekend. >> yes, and a little bit of a mixed bag coming our way. meteorologist adam joseph joining us in the "action news" weather center with the details. >> 50-50 weekend one far better than the other, that is today but both days will be on the warm side. today still a little chill in the air with those temperatures kind of stuck in the upper 30's to around 40 degrees.

you can see it's colder to the south, wilmington atlantic city 39, 37 degrees a little wind off the water. not a lot of wind but just enough to give a little chill there. allentown 40 degrees, philadelphia 42 and trenton 40 degrees. we look to the west you see that sunshine still aglow here at the pagoda cam in reading in berks county. a decent amount of visibility and it almost looks a little hazy and due to the colder air being trapped at the surface it's kind of collecting a little bit of the pollution so to speak, so we'll mix that out as we get into the weekend. in fact, saturday the winds whip up and that helps to break down the cold, 57 degrees. winds could be 30 to 40 miles an hour with that sun tomorrow. and then on sunday, a lot of clouds, a wet start but a drier finish to the day on sunday from the northwest to the south and east with temperatures in the middle 50's. we will chat about that seven-day forecast and let you know how those temperatures fare. there's a little chance of some snow showers. i'll let you know coming up in a little bit. >> sounds good adam thanks.

the kimmel center announced its lineup for the 2018 international festival of the arts. the event will feature award winning acts from around the globe including water on mars. they'll turn the kimmel stage into a circus of gravity defying stunts with comedy and geometry sprinkled in in. there will be a street fair along broad street on the ninth. >> a little girl with big dreams is making music but who is also dealing with a physical limitation. several of them. is getting the chance to create thanks to the help from three local students. morning with temperatures equally as warm as saturday. won't feel that way because of the rain but right around 54 degrees. 40 right now allentown, trenton, reading 41 degrees. we have some 30's on the board like wilmington, millville, 38 degrees. 37 the atlantic city airport and the same for dover, so there is a chill with that wind a little light wind coming in off of that very cold ocean water. high pressure is nearby. that's what's pulled those winds down for today but as that high goes to the east and this cold front near chicago approaches from the west we'll be squeezed between those two systems and that's what's going to funnel that wind out of the southwest during the day tomorrow. so, for tonight clear sky, not as cold, 24 in the suburbs to around freezing for center city with that south-southeasterly wind three to 6 miles an hour. for your saturday, 56, wilmington 58 degrees in dover, 56 in trenton. clouds and sun but again, those winds gusting 30 to 40 miles an hour out of the south-southwest and since the ocean is still in the 30's, if

you think about, hey, it's going to be sunny, nice day, 50, let's head to the shore take a stroll on the boardwalk, bring a jacket. it will be much cooler down there with that wind off the water with temperatures only in the upper 40's. as we look at the second half of the weekend on sunday, rain is here first thing in the morning area wide at 8 o'clock in the morning. about a quarter of an inch. by lunchtime we'll start to shut the rain off to the north and west. still raining south and east and we'll see that progression continue sunday 5 o'clock, raining at the shore, cloudy elsewhere but again a little drier in the afternoon. heading to the super bowl next week, if you're thinking about it or heading that way for minneapolis let's look at there the normal high is 26 degrees. a dry weather but turning cold early next week. tuesday would be the weather day with some snow of 28 degrees. wednesday no the bad, 33 but by thursday, they drop to the teens and it could get even colder than that as you head towards super bowl weekend. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, back at home it's pretty mild overall.
