he was found face down. sources say a lengthy note was left behind. it was just last week the 68-year-old appeared in court looking frail. this month the atlantic county prosecutor's office accused him in a murder for hire plot to kill his wife, 47-year-old april kauffman. she was shot dead in her linwood home in may of 2012. he allegedly carried out the plot with members of the pagan's outlaw motorcycle gang. kauffman was in the atlantic county correctional facility on unrelated weapons charges in june but was moved to the maximum security section in hudson county for his safety when investigators learned of a plot to kill dr. kauffman allegedly by pagans. attorneys for april kauffman's daughter kim packs spoke on her behalf today. >> no one rejoices over anyone committing suicide or anyone's death and kim -- kim's emotions right now are -- she's a mess. >> reporter: packs long believed her stepfather was responsible and never stopped fighting for justice for her

mom. >> we filed a wrongful death suit against him because we thought he had killed or been involved in the murder. and we did that in 2014, okay, so it's been a long road. >> reporter: now, sources say that kauffman was alone in his cell because his cell mate had left for a court appearance. now, this is all still under investigation. the atlantic county prosecutor's office who is handling all the criminal aspects of this case say they were notified by hudson county but they have no further comment. annie mccormick channel6 "action news." rick back to you. >> annie thank you. authorities say they thwart add mass shooting at a school in western pennsylvania. investigators say a 14-year-old boy was plotting to kill his classmates at uniontown high school near pittsburgh. a search warrant uncovered multiple weapons in the boy's bedroom including rifles shot guns machetes and knives. a fellow student alerted

authorities. the incident follows two other incidents. two students were killed during a 15-year-old boy's rampage in kentucky and a 15-year-old girl survived a shooting in texas. world news tonight with david muir will have continuing coverage on the plot coming up at 6:30 right after "action news." >> ♪ >> all right, the countdown continues to super bowl 52 and the eagles are expected to leave for minneapolis this weekend and as the excitement builds so, too, is the bottom line for many area merchants who have been seeing super profits since last sunday. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live at the linc tonight with more on local businesses seeing green and a whole lot of it thanks to eagles fever. hey, bob. >> reporter: hey, rick, yeah, that's right, there's no doubt the super bowl is going to give a huge boost to the local region economically -- from an economic standpoint but it's also going to give us a boost to our mental health. we spoke with a doctor up at temple university who explains all that and some businesses

"action news" reporter vernon odom has been following this story tonight. he's live in media delaware county with reaction from constituents and other local politicians. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, rick and we have now found no shortage of opinions at all in the district. nearly all saying that pat meehan is doing the right thing bifolding up hits tent. now the main sport observation sport out here will become watching the battle to succeed

him. with congressman pat meehan forced to abandon his reelection campaign less than a week after his sexual harassment scandal broke shock waivers are running through gop circles in delaware county. they've got to find a new face fast. we could find no one who thought meehan should have soldiered on. >> better for him to back out than it is for him to just deny it like we've seen in the past from other politicians. >> i think he should resign. >> reporter: because? >> others have done it. i think the standard should be the same. >> reporter: republican party bosses tell me they'll begin looking at potential candidates next week. at least three so far are women. none has held elected office before. they hope to have an endorsed candidate chosen by february 20 at the latest to avoid a primary battle. the democratic party has a little mamas well. state senator daylin leach the original frontrunner remains one of six listed candidates but he had to suspend his campaign last month amid allegations of sexual misconduct towards an aide. he says he's reflecting on his

behavior and apologetic but the party chairman says he's hearing from a half dozen others who want shot at this now suddenly opened congressional seat. the party wants leach to drop out. >> i certainly call for him to withdraw from the race. i stick with that position. i don't think he should be a candidate in the primary for the seventh district seat. >> reporter: reflections from a serious voter on the two scandal scarred men who were the front runners. >> voters are very aware and i think there's a different standard now for someone who wants to take office. >> reporter: rick, a portion of the seventh congressional district liens over into several other counties around here. it's the most gerrymandered district in the commonwealth of pennsylvania. i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news" live in media delaware county. >> all right, vernon thank you. more than 2,000 philadelphia firefighters moved up the ranks today. a promotion ceremony was held at the performing arts center on the temple university

campus. three firefighters were posthumously promoted including lieutenant kenneth green and gabriel lee. matthew letourneau was promoted from lieutenant to captain. he was killed in the line of duty earlier this month fighting a row home fire in north philadelphia. fire department recruits in wilmington took a traditional run around the city to celebrate the end of their training. throughout the so-called academy run, recruits made stops at seven different city fire locations. they paused at the home where three firefighters lost their lives in 2016. 17 recruits made it through the intense 13 week training program. graduation is tomorrow afternoon. the ranks of the camden county police department now include dozens of new officers. 59 officers were sworn in this morning at camden county college. lawmakers say the officers will continue the department's focus on community policing and work with families to strengthen the city. and still to come on "action news" friday night, the 2018 auto show is revving

>> jeff skversky is here and nine days away to the big game. eagles have a couple more practices before they leave for minneapolis right. >> nine days away. number nine going to try to get it done for the city and this team. starving for that first super bowl. the eagles will be the first team in super bowl history to play the big one without their starting left tackle and without their starting quarterback. nick foles the first to admit the eagles would not be here without one carson wentz. let's go live to jaime apody at eagles team headquarters in south philadelphia where wentz admits today it's tough not

playing in super bowl lii. >> reporter: we hadn't heard from carson since his injury. probably because he probably didn't want to take the spotlight away from nick foles but partly because we wondered, well imagine how hard this is for him. carson who has been on crutches since recovering from that surgery, he said that now that he's able to watch the game from the sidelines and actually help out it's gotten a little bit easier to digest. he did allow himself a pity party right after the injury happened. today we heard from carson for the first time since that day in los angeles on december 10th. he told us he not only tore his acl but also his lcl on that play, too. he still hopes to return by week one next season. in the meantime he's supporting nick foles as much as he can. >> as humans we all want to be the competitors that we are and be out there on the field. every time the offense goes on the field unisons -- sunday it's tough. i love these guys. i'm a part of the team as much as anybody else. i just -- i get involved in the game and that kind of all

goes away. without a doubt it's tough, it's tough to not be out there. >> reporter: carson what would it mean to you if the team would win the super bowl. >> it would be awesome, it would be awesome. it. >> reporter: it sure would be. there's one more practice tomorrow but their bags are already on the way. the hallway lined with luggage each with a personalized super bowl 52 luggage tag brandon graham says that sight helps it really sink in. >> it's real. you know, it's starting to happen and we leave in two days so i'm just excited trying to calm my nerves a little bit because the game is not this week, it's next week and just enjoy the moment. i try to enjoy every day. >> reporter: the guys said they kind of wish that the game was this sunday instead of next sunday. carson wentz by the way will be going to minneapolis with the team. he'll be on the sidelines in hopes of helping nick foles and the guys bring home that

lombardi trophy. live at the novacare complex jaime apody channel6 "action news." jeff. >> wentz believes this team could be a perennial super bowl contender. sixers in san tone against the spurs where they have only won only once over the last 32 years perhaps the way this sixers team is playing they'll get a rare w down there. doug pederson did not bring the flyers any luck last night. flyers head into the all-star break on a sour note after getting loan out by the best team in hockey. they'll resume play wednesday against the first place capitals. >> after the loss we've come up strong. that's what we got to do. five, six days before we play our next game. >> with the exception of last night, flyers have been playing very well. sixers have been playing well and of course the eagles. >> you got it. >> been a good time around here. >> it's exciting. thank you jeff. with nine days to go before the eagles play super

bowl 52 the eagles pep band is doing its part to get the fans pumped up for the big game. >> ♪ fly eagles fly >> the four man group played for customers at the shops at liberty place this afternoon in center city. the crowd joined them for a round of the eagles fight song. they also helped hand out a few prizes. >> ♪

>> okay. >> as we head to the weather sent it was chilly the last 24 hours. looking live on sky6 right now still aglow in green and will be through the super bowl there. we got a clear sky right now. you probably notice most areas did not get out of the 30's so it still felt a little chilly during the day today outside of the sunshine if you were in the shade and what's happening here is we've got cold air that is trapped right at the earth's surface. it's called a low level inversion in the weather world. a little weather 101 for you. when we kind of forecast the weather for you we have to look not only at the surface but even to 5,000 feet and beyond. when we take a look at the temperature profile, that's the colder temperatures. here's the warmer temperatures so right around 2,000 feet and below, that's where the cold air is stuck right now. above that layer, we have a lot of warm air but because warm air is lighter than cold air, it can't bust through that so the cold air is settling and we need some wind to mix all of this and get that warm air to come down and

that's going to happen during the day tomorrow. in fact as we look at those numbers, 30's right now wilmington, millville. 36 reading, allentown. 36 in trenton. 37 in philadelphia. so, a chilly friday evening on tap but again, pretty quiet here locally and across most of the country. there is a front near saint louis and chicago very limited moisture with this right now and that's the front that comes in sunday morning. so, for tonight temperatures drop back into the 20's pretty much everywhere. the exception philadelphia, dover and the shore in the 30's. so, not as cold as the last few nights under that clear sky. and as you take a look at your saturday, we're going to have sunshine through much of the day, some high mid level clouds late in the afternoon but the winds, they're going to be up tomorrow 30 to 40 miles an hour but it's that that wind that's going to help to bring that warm air down. 53 at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. 56 degrees at 3 o'clock. and staying in the 50's almost to the evening hours tomorrow. then on sunday, the front closes in so you can see quite a bit of rain here sunday 8:30 in the morning.

lunchtime that rain line goes right along philadelphia to the south and east so starting to dry early afternoon north and west. 5 o'clock rain lingers, extreme far southern areas, clouds elsewhere. most of us start to dry out in the afternoon with about a quarter inch of rain. minneapolis if you're thinking about heading there next week for the super bowl to get there ahead of time average high temperature is 26 degrees and it's basically going to be below that for much of next week. dry monday, snow tuesday early wednesday and then as we get into thursday next week temperatures really falling into the teens for highs and it could get colder than that for the actual super bowl. the seven-day forecast mild weekend here with temps in the 50's tomorrow again sunny but windy, a little rain sunday and then monday that system could bring in a little extra rain or snow shower for the shore at 46 degrees. another weak system on tuesday could bring some snow showers, 34, cold wednesday and then a big jump in temperatures as we head into the first couple of days of february.
