awaiting a court appearance over his mental health. lets go to stephanie ramos in florida. >> reporter: police are still at the high school where the alleged shooter killed 17 people and wounded 14 others. they are str understand why the suspect would do something so horrific. >> after a long and painful afternoon at stoneman douglas high school. authorities are learning more about nicholas cruz the former expelled student that attacked the school. >> he was transferred to another school -- >> police say the suspect was armed with an ar 15 style rifle and the fire alarm sounded that allowed the students to be targeted out in the open. terrified students hid in

classrooms not knowing if they would survive. >> we were just praying and crying. >> police and s.w.a.t. teams swarming the school grounds. >> do you know where the shooter is? >> these teens sharing how some teachers helped to save their lives. one mr. beagle was at the front door of the classroom protecting them. >> he was blocking the door because it was open all the time, i don't know how we are alive. >> at least 17 people lost their lives and more than a dozen are wounded. the victims both students and teachers. after initially only offering tweets. president trump today addressing the nation. >> yesterday a school filled with innocent children and caring teachers became the scene of terrible violence, hatred, and evil.

>> reporter: here many parkland the sheriff's department says all the victims identified and their parents notified. and as for the gunman he faced 17 counts of premeditated murder. >> back over to you. >> thank you. this was the 18th school shooting in the first 45 days of 2018. according to one count that number comes from every town for gun safety. a nonprofit that advocates for gun control. they account for every incident that a firearm is discharged on a school campus. two of them were classified as attempted or completed suicides. >> this latest tragedy is dominating the conversation among the country's police officers including those here in philadelphia. jeanette reyes is live at police headquarterers with reaction

from the top cop and other law enforcement leaders this noon. >> rick, we talked to first responders today who happened to be honored by the city at a previously scheduled event and shared heart break for their colleagues in south florida. but the first responders as well as the commissioner sharing extreme frustration that this keeps happening. >> less than 4 hours after first responders rushed to the aftermath of one of the worst school shootings in u.s. history. the horror loomed large over the room and in the minds of many including commissioner adam teal. >> i saw the news conference and it was a trigger for me and it's a challenge to watch and i was sad and crying watching the coverage. >> police commissioner richard ross expressed frustration at how often these events happen. the greatest country on earth

defies logic that we can't come up with something that makes sense. nothing short of frustration when i hear of these things. >> charles ramsey echoed similar sentiments and expressed doubt that change could come from lawmakers and encouraged americans to push for tougher gun laws. >> congress is not going to get in involved. i lost all hope that congress would do anything. especially after sandy hook. if that dide this schoo sho move the needle either. >> speaking to the police commissioner an incident like this sparks the conversation of the preparedness in philadelphia. the police commissioner as well as the fire commissioner say they are thoroughly trained for incidents like this one for it .

a police officer carried a 4-year-old girl if his arms the day she was kidnapped from her home the day before in south carolina. she was found unharmed in alabama. police say that a railroad crew called 911 after finding a car parked in the woods with the

. all right lets get a check of the accuweather forecast. very mild today. >> it's nice and kind of overcast. stormtracker 6 live double scan shows us we have dispensed with the morning rain and something showing up south of dover but not an issue up here. and spring mountain was using the snow guns and putting the snow on the slopes, now it's comfortable to go up there on the mountain side. and you see there is plenty of enough snow for those folks to get up there and get middle of february skiing close to

philadelphia. 52 is your current temperature and mild here and cooler at spring mountain. winds southwest at 14 and obviously no windchill with that mild number. temperatures are in the 50s across the region and the airport in atlantic city we are almost at 60. 57 in millville and 58 in dover and 52 in philadelphia. and that southerly flow continues through the region and that continues to bump the numbers up over the next several hours. cloud cover is thick and at times the skies brighten but a mostly cloudy day on tap. mild though and nice numbers for this time of year. mostly cloudy in the lehigh valley. and 61 is your high there. down the shore also on the mild side with a high up to 60 under mostly cloudy skies and in philadelphia we go for a high of 65 today and mostly cloudy and milder. skies may brighten at times generally speaking fairly cloudy and winds are not all that strong. 7 to 14 miles per hour on average. tonight it's also mild going

down to 57 and rain will be arriving later during the evening and breezy out there. winds from the southwest tonight 10 to 20 miles per hour. in terms of rain some may see sprinkles and showers and rain is centered to the northern half of the region and every now and then something popping through south as well. and it does look like by tomorrow morning the rush hour has the potential of at least starting out wet and that tapers off later in the morning and by lunch time and beyond we are plainly dry. all sights set on saturday night around here. getting cooler late in the day on friday and cooler on saturday. and that sets the table for this. still looks like a southern storm is going past us to the south and robust enough to put snow in starting in the evening on saturday and then continuing into the wee hours of sunday morning. probably shuts off well before you wake up the next morning and rain to the south and more snow to the north. future tracker 6 starting to

pick up on this too. 6:00 we start to see the first snowflakes move in and then you see how up to 10:00 the mainly snow along the i-95 corridor and especially in the northern and western suburbs and the rain line gets closer to philadelphia and the whole thing shutting off at 3:00 in the morning on sunday. what do we expect on the ground? we'll have an official snowfall map on "action news" at 4:00. but in general we think in philadelphia a 50% chance of seeing 1 to 3 inches out of this. only a moderate chance of seeing more but if you look at the northern and western suburbs i'll flip the numbers around. the farther northern and west north bucks and montco, and lehigh valley valley not out of the question to get 3 to 6 inches out of this. and more model adjustments coming this afternoon. 65 is today's high and clouds very mild out there. tomorrow a damp start as you saw but a dry and windy blustery

afternoon and high of 62 is early in the day and we really fall later in the day and at night and go down to 27 for a low. and the accuweather alert only 40 in the afternoon and the snow and rain arrives and between the hours of 7:00 and 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. accumulating snow. on sunday we have looking at dry conditions building back in and the snow will be over. 46 is the high and melt whatever did fall. and monday clouds with late rain and high up to 51 for presidents day and tuesday temperatures jump 68 is the high. almost 70. and 66 still mild on wednesday. i don't believe that is a record. the record around this time of year is 74. but i don't think so. >> thank you. >> still ahead in the next half hour of "action news" at 12:30. safety on the job is rewarded hear about the major milestone
