3:03 am
>> reporter: peterson has since resigned. but the sheriff says the investigation will continue. both teachers unions say what their students need are more books and counselors, not more gun goods. >> and what's so surprising about all of this. we're learning that deputy who did not go in the building was recently named school resource officer of the year. >> he was recognized for his solid judgment. so let's turn to former fbi special agent, steve gomez. what was your reaction when you heard the sheriff say he waited outside? my initial reaction was anger, disappointment. i was so discouraged to hear this. it's bad enough that we have heard allother potential ways the crime could have been prevented and so many lives lost and injured.
3:04 am
but i started to think about what that officer was going through. he's an older officer because obviously able to retire and had been serving at the school for many years. so he had been somewhat out of battle, kind of like what i went through where it's every day you're dealing with stress and the potential for a shooting and so on. you tend to start to wonder what was going on in his mind, knowing there was a shooting there. he froze, it sounds like. and you think what was going on in his head? your initial reaction is you go to the had fight. you go to the fire. that's what you're there for and you tend to wonder had he been out of that fight, that daily combatting violence and protecting lives? >> there are many teachers who

3:06 am
there's also talk about arming teachers. is there any kind of consensus on that in law enforcement? >> in law enforcement, we tend to not want private citizens or innocent civilians to be armed because the problem is you can have what we call blue on blue shootings. a teacher who has a gun and is taking action and law enforcement is coming in and that teacher's not going to have a vest that says police or school police or anything like that. so it's going to be difficult to differentiate who's a suspect. so it's not as easy as we're going to allow them to carry guns if they're qualified and trained and so on. think about if you were a teacher and you were going to carry a gun? are you going to keep it in your
