when, for a second year in a row, all of the performers nominated for an academy award are white. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a little more than two weeks to go until the process of electing the next president begins with the iowa caucuses. that will be the first vote after more than six months of campaigning. last night in south carolina, seven of the republican candidates took the debate stage. it was the smallest group of gop hopefuls yet, and it appears to be turning into a two-man race. the latest national poll find donald trump with his strongest support of yet and he is followed by ted cruz and that set the table for tense moments between the two leaders. weijia jiang is in north charleston with more. >> reporter: donald trump and ted cruz shadowtood

debate stage. the two leading candidates providing viewers with some of the night's most heated exchanges. >> if you become the nominee, who the hell knows if you can even serve in office? jo front-runner donald trump brought his birther statement. he claims ted cruz isn't qualified to run for president because he was born to a u.s. citizen on canadian soil. >> why are you raising this issue now? >> because now he is doing a little bit better. no, i didn't care before. >> i spent my entire life defending the constitution before the u.s. supreme court and i'll tell you, i'm not taking legal advice from donald trump. >> is the romance gone? do you two hate each other now? >> i continue to sing his praises. i am not attacking him. i'm going to defend myself. >> reporter: cruz battled back, questioning trump's

and marco rubio and found himself playing defense all night. he did a pretty decent job paring the tough questions but will it have any effect on his poll numbers? remains to be seen. then there was a battle for third place. rubio and jeb bush and kasich and ben carson. rubio and christie very strong night but done well at these debates and not turned into much in terms of polling for them. will it change? interesting to see what happened there. carson needed a game changing moment and didn't happen. i think they have to rely on being out other on the trail and hoping they can change voters minds while they are campaigning. i'm steve chaggarr circumstances, cbs news, new york. hillary clinton campaign is up in arms over a new bernie sanders ad. it suggests that clinton wouldn't be tough enough on wall street.

fatal shooting of a chicago teen by a police officer. a judge ordered the video released. the video is graphic and you may find is disturbing. on january of 2013, carjacking suspect cedric c chatman is pulled over. he fires four shots. >> as soon as the officer encountered mr. chatman laying on the ground, flips him over and steps on his foot. >> chatman's family shows the video shows he posed no threat. they have fall a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and two officers. this morning police in indonesia arrested three suspects linked to yesterday's attack in jakarta. capital. police say they recovered an islamic state flag at one of the attackers home.
