rand paul boycotted the event and democrats will square off sunday night in charleston south carolina. state commissioners will protest after defeating by seven votes but mclamb challenged the results after discovering that dozens of voters received the wrong ballot and asked state officials for permission to hold a new election something they support. nearly two years after the big coal ash spill in the river duke energy gave the media a look at clean up efforts. it's the waste material from coal fire plants. they are to remove nearly 30 after 39,000 tons of potentially toxic ash spilled into the dan river in eden north of greens bureau. about three million tons of

taken on trains to a specially lined land fill in virginia. >> this is priority one, the most important thing that many of us have worked on for several years now and we have an army of engineers and technical staff that have developed the plans for these sites. >> 66,000 tons were removed from the river site. it's one of four places to clean up by 2019. a woman accused of stealing a police car the 46-year-old took off in one of their suvs. she drove only a block before she was taken into custody. police are searching for the driver who stole a car and struck a durham police cruiser. the driver rammed the officer's car. the car was later abandoned at the intersection of university drive and vickers avenue and the driver ran off.

that stolen car. she was taken to the hospital without any serious injuries. the officer in the cruiser was not hurt. people in durham are ready to stop talking about crime and start taking action. they gathered for a vigil outside of city hall where they talk about a lack of jobs and community programs for teenagers and wanting the police officers to get out of the cars and into troubled neighborhoods. despite hundreds of churches in durham only a fraction are working to improve the problem. >> after getting through praying get up off your knees and let's take some action. >> the pastor wants to organize a summit with community leaders churches and groups and wants to see a plan of action come from the discussion. there's a visitation for mother and daughter who were double murder victims. ha shot and killed her and her 17-year-old daughter then

the visitation is for mcclain and at apex funeral home tomorrow morning at olive baptist church in apex. a couple allowing their dogs to starve will make franky and danielle abandoned the two dogs at an apartment. one of them died. she was 20 pounds under weight and had no food in her system. the second dog was alive but no food in it's crate. the couple is charged with federal cruelty to animals. a lawyer was found guilty of breaking professional conduct rules. chris mumma was found guilty of invading a woman's privacy and having it tested for dna without permission. charges related to deception and interfering with justice were dropped and means she can get back to work. today is the actual birthday of dr. martin luther

japan slid down a mountain side killing 14 people and injuring 27 others. it veered into the opposite lane rammed into a guardrail and plunged down the mountain landing on it's side. officials are looking into what led to that accident but the tour bus operator has a history of driver safety violations. more details are emerging from the terrorist attack in indonesia. authorities believe they know the identities of the five dead attackers and two were previously in prison on terror charges. two people killed 20 injured when militants attack a starbucks and police booth using bombs and bullets. iran waters defense secretary ash carter says it appears it was a navigational error not trouble that sent

simple and realize it has possible i am occasions. >> big ideas there and if you would like to hear more about the forum click on the weather tab. the extremely cold weather in canada is having an unexpected effect on mail delivery. frustrated residents in ottawa say they haven't been able to get any mail for days because their mailboxes are frozen shut. a sharp temperature drop has caused the locks on community mailboxes to freeze making them nearly impossible to open. some residents tried to open them by shaking or kicking them. that's not going to work. the postal service is hiring contractors to deice the mailbox locks but it could take up to an hour just to open one. >> i got a chance to talk to the un yesterday on our noon newscast. he was absolutely incredible. what a treat to have him here and the amazing things that he

impact on travel or anything like that. rdu sky cam looking quiet and dry on the tarmac and access ramps. temperature 38 one of the warmer spots and a nice south westerly wind bringing warmer temperatures into the region. the south westerly flow for 24 hours help eastbound to warm things up. dew point 29 a sign there is more moisture. those are some of the colder spots this morning. raleigh at 38 one of the warm spots so either side of freezing this morning and that's noticeably warmer than yesterday in some spots especially for raleigh and south hill where we are 8 or 9 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. we do have the low pressure system down here along the gulf coast heading our way to bring us significant rain by this afternoon. expect to see some of that around southern pines or fayetteville right around or just after lunch time and that

the rest of the area by the middle of the afternoon. don't forget your raincoat or umbrella especially for the kids. wake county has early release but a lot of kids are in school a full day today and need the raincoats by the time they come home. this morning variable cloudy skies, mix of sun and cloud cover. there's 1:00 with the rain moving in. slight chance of severe weather especially down here along the coast but don't be surprised if there's a rumble of thunder later this afternoon with the system coming through. the rain will be easing up overnight and waking up to partly cloudy skies on saturday morning. we have a dry front that comes through--mostly dry front that comes through saturday night. it could bridge a flurry late saturday or early sunday morning. there could be a flurry with that slipping by. future cast not showing that. here's 7:00 a.m. on sunday with snow in the mountains and this is the system we've been talking about all week. is it headed out to sea or

the next few hours but by lunch time it's cloudy with the rain coming across the south carolina line and moving on in. now it might thunder a little bit this afternoon. the rain may be heavy at times and we may have a few breaks from time to time. we have marginal risk for severe weather along the coast. no real risk here but some of those thunderstorms could produce strong gusty winds. this all moves on out of here overnight and waking up to sunshine on saturday. saturday really looks like a beautiful day. partly cloudy skies, mid 50s but sunday what is going to happen? future cast has really no precipitation for us. here's the low pressure system that's we've been discussing all week whether or not that was going to spread moisture in and help to bring us any precipitation. future cast says no at the moment but i don't think we can write this off. a few sprinkles or flurries are possible on sunday morning and clearing after that. today will be the real event of the weekend in terms of rain.
