live and work in this community. many are gathering to say goodbye to joshua woods. the 24-year-old died early tuesday morning. a memorial has been set-up at the fire department where he worked. woods was driving south tuesday at around 1:00 a.m. when he crossed the center lane over direct corrected and went off of the center road. woods was responding to a call friday morning. they could ride over to the viewing together. the viewing is scheduled to go from 5 until 9 tonight. again many coming here tonight to say some of their final goodbyes. gerald and linda. >> ariel clay live thank you. garner police opened it's new headquarters today located on 7th avenue and today's celebration is just the beginning of a weekend of events. among one of the many features

building that was vandalized a few months ago but it's been repaired. the department will hold an open house tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. >> tomorrow marks a quarter century since the bombing of iraq the starting of operation desert storm and the effort to liberate from invading troops. they continue to operate on the front lines in the midst east today. the important event and retired robert springer. thank you for being here. you've been our military expert and announced it's been a long time. first of all walk us back through. how did we get to desert storm. >> as you know his troops invaded kuwait. the united nations to get those troops. they didn't respond.

the time gave them an ultimate yum and a specific date and time to have the troops out of there or we would take action. president bush didn't wait very long after that red line pass. >> what i did they have for north carolina troops. >> obviously the first combat they had been in for quite some time. it's amazing when you look back at the young ones fighting in the war. some of them were officers as a consequence of time but we had over a half million troops inserted into that conflict. >> 430,000 of those were americans and many of those were fort bragg soldiers men and women. >> what have we learned as a nation from that war and a state because of operation desert storm. >> what we learned as a nation is the interesting things that

for the first time we used a seth fighter plane that evening in baghdad against a pretty good air densand it was successful. the first time we used satellites for weapons use and also for communications for information and intelligence, surveillance. we were doing all of these things for the first time in a combat environment and those things have rolled over down to the day and they have been refined in great measure. >> here we are 25 years later and we still have a presence there. how does the war continue to influence us today. >> how does it continue to influence us? i think you are talking about 25 years ago or today's war? >> what's been left behind basically? >> well i think what's left behind is we didn't leave behind. we should have left more forces in iraq in 2011 and opted not to do that and as a consequence they didn't have a stable government.
