on hay street in downtown. we can expect more of this of course as the temperatures continue to drop. and today's cold weather is only the beginning. the dot says work is already under way to treat interstates, major highways and bridges in case we see snow during tomorrow's commute. our chief meteorologist greg fishel is here to walk us through the timing when all of this could happen. greg. >> all right, david, and we're looking at perhaps a few flurries in the air that would mainly be tomorrow afternoon into the early evening hours. at this point we're not looking for any accumulating snow, so it's probably going to be more of a conversation piece than anything else. the bigger challenge that we face is later in the week and we'll be talking more about that a little bit later in the newscast. as far as temperatures go right now,ou jt w us update at the tv station, we've just dropped into the 20s. moncure at 29, durham at 29, and then if we broaden the view here

showing up from mainly the triangle and rocky mount north. southern pines you've seen the 20s as of newburn, and fayetteville will be doing it shortly. we're looking for temperatures to drop rapidly down into the mid-and-upper teens late tonight, but then as clouds come in tonight, temperatures may come up a little bit and those clouds will be from the system that could give us a few flurries tomorrow afternoon. but again, the bigger system down the road we'll talk more about that. back to you. >> okay, great, thank you. it is cold for animals and the people who take care of them. cindy and her daughter are volunteer dog walkers at the spca of wake county. even in cold weather, she says dogs still need exercise, especially cute little puppies like lucky. >> it's fun. we've been running around with the dogs out in the yard. it keeps us warm and keeps them energized. >> spca spokeswoman darcy says jackets are a good idea for dogs with thing coatings or exposed skin, but the most important

weather is to bring them indoors at night and make sure their water outside isn't frozen solid. now, it takes -- if flakes start flying in your neighborhood we want to see them bundle up, but share your pictures and videos. upload them and the reported section on the web site or on our apps or you can even e-mail them to report it at wral.com. a wake county mother says she's being forced to choose between helping her disabled son learn to eat and sending him to school. he attends a publicly funded preschool and she says getting answers from the county has been a nightmare. wral's kathryn brown explains the mother is now taking legal steps. >> reporter: 3-year-old gavin loves to eat. his favorite food is sin mop apple yogurt. gavin has downs syndrome.

developmentally, he's nine months of age. >> gavin has an oral motor delay and that involves sort of how he chews food. >> good job. >> reporter: until his third birthday, gavin was enrolled in a public early intervention program and getting food in the classroom. when he entered pre-k, a private developmental based center funded through the wake county public school system, ainsworth was told feeding therapy was not educational, but medical and would no longer be offered. >> so while they help him potty train, they help him walk and learn how to hold a crayon and write, and things like that and they help him eat, they have a feeding team to have feed him. no one on there is certified to help them progress. ainsworth is continuing food therapy, but gavin has to leave the classroom to get it. she's filed a petition against the county and state department of education for what she calls a violation of her son's civil rights.

he's being told he has to leave the classroom because he has a disability. >> ainsworth is not upset with frankie lemon school. she says their hands are tied and teachers are frustrated, as well. >> both the county and state are restricted because of privacy but said the school is following guidelines provided by the north carolina dpi in regards to all students' feeding needs. ainsworth wants nothing more than for her son to be on track and in the classroom. >> this case is scheduled to go before an administrative law judge in february. she's not seeking money and has offered to pay for the food therapist. duke university is at the center of a title nine investigation. school officials tell wral a student filed a complaint over how duke handled sexual misconduct and harassment cases. the u.s. department of education lached an investigation in

duke wouldn't comment on the particular case, however, spokesman michael showenfeld says duke is committed to providing a safe, inclusive environment for all students and works diligently to ensure compliance with chapter nine. over sexual misconduct cases, they overhauled the reporting of cases. and locking their credit history, what does that mean? why do you even have to be concerned about a child's credit? is it i didn't know children had credit. five on your side's monica laliberte is here, monica. >> reporter: this is a serious problem that involves identity theft. it is happening a lot and when it happens, it may be years before we find out they're a victim. last year i told you how this woman's newborn had her identity stolen. they found out about it when they were filing their federal taxes.

straighten it out. now, parents have a defense. a new state law allows to you protect against identity theft by freezing your child's credit. it's for children under 16, and prevents an account from being opened or a loan from being taken out in your child's name. you can request it through the free national security bureaus. the can be a cost of $5 each, but families say that is nothing compared to the cost of fixing the fallout when a child's identity is stolen. when your child is old enough to establish credit that freeze can be lifted. adults with also freeze their credit with exuifax, transunion, and experion, and thawed when you need credit yourself. hundreds of thousands
