thanks for joining us tonight. there is a chance we will see winter precipitation in the days to come. it is causing problems for one local school district. schools in virginia will be on a delay tomorrow. classes starting at 10:00 a.m. below freezing temperatures is the big story tonight. team coverage on local enes and law enforcement officers are doing to keep people safe. let's first two to chief meteorologist greg official in the weather center, greg? >> all right, linda. the temperatures are cold again out there similar to the levels that we saw last night at this time.

we had right now. 18. the cold spot. here, right on the brink of being in the teens wake forest, buck horn they are all 20. 23 here at the tv station. southern pines, 18. and, many other areas are very close to getting to that level. rocksboro at 19. we will have clouds moving in late tonight. that will stop the turn in the temperature and it could reverse it a little bit by morning. so, any additional cooling that we will see will be in the next 3-5 hours and then things will begin to level off. again, we are thinking 16 is a reasonable estimate of an official overnight low with the clouds coming in quicker. not quite that cold. still, in the teens, no question. and then tomorrow afternoon, the clouds may be capable of producing a few snow flurries, right now, certainly does not look like a big deal. the more important system is coming later in the week. we will be talking more about that and for snow lovers, the overall trends tonight may not be what you wanted to hear.

their home on chelsea drive on sunday night. both had been shot. don was dead and his wife died yesterday. neighbors say the two had health issues and stayed in of their home most of the time. officers have not released the circumstances of the shootings. >> we are learning more tonight about a robbery in kerry that sent a woman to the hospital. they are looking for four suspects in connection to the crime. the victim told the police all of the suspects were armed and wearing dark clothing. the injuries are serious but not life-threatening. >> a reward is offered for a string of asian business owners. businesses have been robbed and even assaulted in home invasions, we are told the suspects are men with guns that usually wear masks. >> anyone with information is asked to call the police. a furnace malfunctioned.

the coast guard found the last life raft from the pair of helicopters that crashed in the hawaii coast and the search has been suspended. no other sign of the 12 marines on board of aircraft. the searchers say it does not look like anyone used the rafts. the coast guard says it assumes the best case scenario when someone in the right equipment and right conditions could survive. new tonight, a deadly crash forced ben carson to suspend his campaign for president.

southwestern north carolina and whatever precipitation there is, it is back here under the more solid area colder cloud tops. we think the snow will probably be spreading into the mountains overnight and certainly by morning. and then, the system will loose a lot of the precipitation production professional, you will, as it crosses the mountains, there might be enough left for the floury activity tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. the big ticket item is back in here with the energy coming in the western part of the united states. that is the system that has everyone along the east coast really keeping a close eye on things. let's take a look at our forecast. we are taking a look at the mid- level moisture and for those of you that are new to the air and have not seen us do this, you need moisture through a great depth of the atmosphere to get the precipitation, shallow, nothing much will happen. so, we use about 10,000 feet as sort of a proxy if the moisture is deep enough to do that. then a couple freezing lines

we are taking a look at the area between 5,000 and 10,000 feet and the area between the ground and 5,000 feet. both of those have to be below freezing to get snow. then, of course, you have the estimated surface temperature here at raleigh. so, let's put it in motion here. here is the first area of moisture coming in during the day tomorrow. the temperatures in the 30s, both pleasing south of us, whatever we see tomorrow afternoon. it will be in the form of snow. we just don't think there will be all that much of it. then, we get a bit of a break on thursday. before the main system begins to come in. now, look at this friday morning, notice how the 5- 10,000 foot freezing line is north of us. so, above freezing in that layer. can not get snow in that situation. but, the other freezing layer ising south of us. entire area between the 2 lines here could well be set up for freezing rain. late tomorrow night and on into friday morning. and not so much snow.

desirable. they would rather have the snow than the ice. now, during the course of the day, it this freezing line will retreat northward. so, the areas that are going to hold on to the freezing rain the longest would be the areas you would expect. oxford, henderson, back towards here into the foothills in the northern mountains of north caroline a. the big question mark is, once we get to friday night and saturday, does this area of moisture it is wrapping around the low on the western side, does this slide eastward and give us a period of steady snow during the day on saturday? it could actually accumulate a little bit. that is the question. it could retreat like this and we would never get into the main access of moisture. if we did, there would be a chance of accumulating snow on late friday night and saturday. so, those are the things we will be watching. a couple theys to keep an eye on it.
