12:30 pm
get chinerouba we continue to follow the winter storm of 2016. request what a morning it has beenment really the last few days have been pretty fascinating.
12:31 pm
this event and we wanted to begin today with meteorologist elizabeth gardner for a look at today's forecast. >> there is more of this to come. it would be nice if we could say hey, it is almost over and what you see is what you get. this is going fob a changing situation all afternoon. it is messy out there. i'll leave the roads to brian but i want to show you there is sleet that continues to fall around the triangle. you can see the water on the lenses is frozen so we have a mix of wintry precipitation happening across the area. we take a look at the radar picture. plenty of that still falling. we have the winter storm stall r still falling all the way through tomorrow -- still falling all the way through tomorrow. any additional accumulation from raleigh southward in terms of snow and sleet will be fairly light. we continue to add a god bit of
12:32 pm
roxboro in particular could see totals up to 4 inches, maybe 5, maybe even isolated 6-inch totals. from roxboro southward, it will be our aklum lags of ice. you mate sigh it is just rainy at my house but almost everybody's temperature is still at or below freezing. we'll see the ice accumulations when we add the windy conditions to that this afternoon. brian will address the slick roads coming up in just a little bit. we still have plenty of that. the eastern part of the viewing area still under that winter weather advisory all the way through the day tomorrow. we'll talk a little bit more about specifically amounts for different towns, different neighborhoods, different regions of our viewing area. we are not finished with the system just yet. we'll break that down in a little more detail for you coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you so much. we will check in with brian in just a bit. we want to falk about durham real quick. they have seen quite a bit of precipitation this morning.
12:33 pm
in drive 5 and she is seeing today. >> reporter: we are just about university drive. he just saw an accident cleared occupy 147. we were going to try to show cheered. a tow truck came and moved a vehicle off of 147 that looked like it had stalled out there. a lot of the interstates and main roads that wave been driving on haven't actually been that bad so far today. that includes i-40, 147 and 151505. all were pretty slushy but not causing too much trouble for most of the drivers there. that does not include everyone. some people did lose control along the roadway. we saw on 15501 a small car lost control and crashed into a snow plow that was there along the side of the road and then
12:34 pm
hillen dale exit, two cars were also being towed away there. durham police released an estimate basically of how many accidents they've seen and they say about 18 overnight into this morning. most of those single vehicle accidents caused most likely by the rough road conditions. so take it slow. we'll continue to drive around here and let you know what we see. >> i do want to ask you this since it seems you've been hitting up the major interstates as well as the secondary roads that even the governor mentioned was quite the concern. can you peek to how big of a difference that has been? from what we see from your camera, it seems like it is quite the difference. >> reporter: well, main roads and the 15501 and 147 even, they aren't been that bad that we've seep so far. the only thing i can put that to is the people are driving on them. people are being told to stay inside but some drives, a lot of drivers have been out here
12:35 pm
they are driving on it, turning it to slush so they haven't been as bad as i think we expected originally. but again, as elizabeth said, this will continue throughout the day so we are encouraging people to stay inside. >> you stay safe out there. thank you. from durham to raleigh to julia sims who witnessed something this morning that was kind of interesting. tell us what you saw and how conditions are over all in raleigh. >> reporter: earlier, we were telling you about an ambulance that got hit by a city of raleigh snow plow truck. fortunately, no one was hurt and there was very minimal property damage. but that ambulance was coming down piece street which is pretty tricky and a pretty steep hill and apparently had to swerve out of the way and it just goes to show you that the roads are still pretty slick. you can see out here on west street that the road is still pretty covered.
12:36 pm
more and more clear, we are seeing more and more people venture out. the city of raleigh has about two dozen trucks out right now treating the roads, cleaning streets. this morning, we saw some folks down in historic oakwood opting to get out and walk and check that were open. and, of course, the sound being heard across the triangle today, those ice scrapers as some people are trying their luck at driving. that is not recommended. like elsewhere, folks are keeping a close eye on the trees and all the power lines and we are starting to see at least here in downtown raleigh some of those trees starting to ice up. but again, we are starting to see more and more people out here on the roads as these
12:37 pm
still, they are very tricky and very dangerous to navigate. we talked to the folk over at raleigh, the raleigh police department. since midnight, they have had to respond to 26 calls. fortunately, nobody has been hurt but those folks are going to be taking their cars to the mechanics shop and that is no fun at all. >> no, it is not. >> let's just hope the sounds of scraping doesn't morph into the sound of chain saws later on this afternoon. >> please. amanda lamb is live coming from zebulon to raleigh on 264 west. anything changed out there for you? >> reporter: just a few minutes ago, we saw two wrecks happen very close together. we actually had came upon them after they happened. one man explained that he had been driving and somebody hit him from behind and he was sent off the road, skidding off the
12:38 pm
across street. luckily, he was okay. across the street, there was another car carrying a family of four and they were transported to the hospital. same type of thing, hit, slid, spun around and went off the roadway. now, the first accident involved a hit and run driver so that is still under investigation. but the scary thing is both of those drivers, the one i talked to who said i didn't know it was that slippery, it just didn't seem like that. and even when we were on the side of the road, shooting these accidents, it was really clear that everybody was slipping an sliding who was coming along especially people that were going too fast for the conditions. so again, it looks deceiving. it looks clear. but all of the wetness that you see on the road in front of you, in front of us, in front of our car right now is ice. it is 29 degrees out here. so you just really need to be careful and even in places like this area that we are in right now where it doesn't v you don't see that white coating on
12:39 pm
bit of ice and it is still coming down. >> it may look like it is going fast but that is the angle of the camera. they are send being very careful out there. thank you so much, amanda. >> she mentioned the accidents. brian, you've been counting quite a number of them, vptd you? >> it has been a busy morning especially later in the morning. we saw conditions deteriorate around 10:30, 11:00. one of the big ones is in durham on 58 northbound. it is blocked around guest road. we have an accident there in the distance involving a fedex trucks with two trailers on it. just a little while ago, police were able to open up left lane there but they've closed it again t look like it may be out there for a little while yet. so 85 nund at guest road, right now at least blocked completely. 85 in both directions at dabney drive in henderson also blocked. fred's towing on the scene of
12:40 pm
have abeen able to right the tanker. still working to learn more about this accident in the newsroom. want to keep that in mind. i'm telling you this not to tell you to avoid this area or that area but just to give you the overall idea that you need to stay put. getting out of the neighborhood will be a challenge. this is one the neighborhood streets. the chapel hill police tweeting this picture of a truck that east franklin street this stay put. >> advice of the morning. we'll go to break. stay with us.
12:41 pm
there. several airlines took preemptive measures yesterday canceling thousands of nights before the big storm. sloan heffernan is there with a look at the big board she has been monitoring all morning. >> reporter: check out this line behind me. these are all delta airline passengers. it is one of the few airlines operating today and these folks are hoping to get to their destinations and we are joined from burlington, north carolina and she is trying to get to ft.
12:42 pm
has a cruise to catch. how stressful is this? >> very stressful. very stressful. it leaves tomorrow. i don't want to get doe laid tonight and miss it. >> reporter: whats that been like so farment you were scheduled out on a flight that was to depart at 3:00 and it has been delayed. >> it is delayed a little bit more. we were supposed to get out on one to fly direct this morning and it was canceled so we had to be rerouted. >> reporter: now you are scheduled to go to atlanta first and then to ft. lauderdale tonight. >> reporter: gosh, well i hope you make your cruise an i hope you all have a wonderful time. best of luck to you. as the saying goes, you can't control your circumstances but you can control your attitude and everyone that i've spoken to out here, they have great attitudes and they just want to get where they're going safely. back to you. >> i think you just made her day. very nice. >> thank you. let's head over to roxboro and check in with bryan mims
12:43 pm
stay with us. they call it the snow capital of the wral viewing area. >> that is where bryan mims is in roxboro. bryan has been very open saying he loves the snowment do you still love it? >> i do love the snow.
12:44 pm
the cold but i guess it needs to be cold for it to snow. and we have a nice coating of snow here in roxboro. i would say 3 inches on the ground. this is u.s. 501 right here, the main drag in roxboro. traffic is fairly steady. quite a number ever people are out. i think some people are actually cruising. we've seen the same pick uptruck go by three or four times. a few pickup trucks have been hot dogging and showing off. i guess that is what you do when it snows. they know what they're doing around here. they are used to the snow. haven't had any major accidents to report but we are monitoring the situation here and trying to enjoy the view as much as get too cold. >> at least the road right behind you looks better than it did 30 minutes ago. >> reporter: yeah, it does. they've had the truck go through here. >> thank you so much.
12:45 pm
now because we have been watching this from the beginning since wave been on at 4:30. this is very much changing by the hour. jot precipitation continues to fall. it is falling in different forms and different places an even in certain places it continues to change and will do as we get through the afternoon. let's go back over to red sox brovment it is so pretty but if the last 10 or 15 minutes, there has been a little bit of a change. -- to roxboro. the last time, you couldn't see any moisture on the lens because that was all snow. when you start to change it over to freezing rain, you see water on the lens. we do have frozen drops there that are now showing up on the camera lens. that is a telltale sign that we are starting to warm things up in the mid layers of the atmosphere. the more we do that, less athlete -- the less late and more freezing rain we will see. that can also help produce some
12:46 pm
expecting to see potentially later on today. the radar showing blue here is just an of the nation. we know we are starting to see a little bit of wintry mix developing up here towards the virginia line. we are seeing it from raleigh southward. some very light sleet falling but definitely some freezing rain. the water that is falling into areas where temperatures are below freezing, of course, is keeping us accruing that ice. it looks really messy. i said wow, the roads look really messy. are there a lot of accidents. he said no, a lot of people are staying off the road. we continue to encourage you to stay home. the roads are messy. we'll be watching for continuing potential with power outages through the afternoon. it is 26 in henderson. 27 in chapel hill. from the triangle northward, everybody is below freezing. but we go to smithfield. it is 32.
12:47 pm
can start to breathe a little sigh of relief. we need to warm up our temperatures a little bit more before we are sure that we are not continuing to accrue any ice. but as temperatures climb, we'll see it really just becoming rain instead of freezing rain. still plenty cold in sanford and southern pines for freezing rain. that is likely to continue. here is one more reason you don't want to have to go outside. it feels like teens from raleigh northward and mid-20s down south. that wind will continue to blow. so was happening next. we continue to have this fairly steady band of precipitation across our part of north carolina. it looks like it is starting to break up a little bit back to our west but we still have this nice band down here from north georgia over into south carolina. and that is going to be the continuing precipitation that we see this afternoon. then you can see even farther south where it has ended. this is what rolls over us overnight tonight and we'll see much lighter amounts of precipitation. this is still going to move in across the area as we head
12:48 pm
here is futurecast and that is what you will see. that band of rain continues to push across the area through 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00. then the amounts begin to taper off. we are still expecting that wraparound moisture to continue through saturday. not a lot of additional accumulation but it may be pretty if you have power and there is more of this wintry precipitation. the amounts of icing that we may see. the freezing rain could creigh its a glaze of a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice across a good chunk of our viewing area. as you head south and west of raleigh, we could see some amounts that are pretty high. don't forget, on saturday, we'll end up with that potential for some lingering flurries and then after that, the weather is a lot more

about seven hours now into this winter weather storm and we are still who with you. this is wral coverage of the winter weather storm. >> good afternoon, everyone. it is still falling there. i'm not sure exactly what is falling -- it seemed like ice pellets everywhere. >> it is a freezing rain mixture. >> it continues to be a mess outside. if you can stay in today, the urge you to.
12:52 pm
the highway patrol does. it is treacherous. it is not as bad as we have seen at times, but it is very bad. >> we have heard from people who have ventured out and they are surprised by how slippery it can be and suddenly. for the latest on the forecast was checking the elizabeth gardner who's been on the air since 4:30 pm -- 430 m -- 4:30 am. started early this morning at 6 a.m. with a burst of snow and sleet and then it's tapered off a little bit. then i think people felt this will be okay. but the precipitation picked up and it has been steady every since -- ever since laying down the glaze of ice. there is definitely some water in there which is present everywhere. take a look at our wilson's skycam. this is a place you want run into as much trouble on the roads.
