408 -- collisions reported by the highway patrol. 1500 statewide, and the reason is simple, the roads are terrible. >> here are some of the latest video into the newsroom video we captured while many of you were sleeping. in some areas, trees are down, they are certainly blocking some of the roads from the weight of that ice. you are looking at video from knightdale road in raleigh, you can just see immediately it is a mess. it really is a mess out there. let's go over those numbers, yet again. it's a lot to take in with those numbers. these are the latest from duke energy across the state >> slightly better. >> this is an improvement from the last number three received. across the state, more than a hundred 49,000 customers without power. when it comes to the breakdown of the counties, here is what you have -- wake county has more than 61,000 customers in the dark.
9:01 am
and harnett county at 10,00518 -- 10,518. a duke energy spokesman told us earlier this morning, they are concerned about the increasing wind speeds coming up this afternoon, in fact they thought they were going to have more troubles in the western part of the state. but since they got mostly snow out there, they are moving a lot of those crews, in the west, toward the east to help out the of us who have been experiencing problems related to the ice buildup >> we are showing you this map to give you a better perspective of what it is across the state, not just locally here. every single marking on that map indicates the power outages that duke energy is working on right now, at this very hour. one of the questions we took directly to duke energy this morning when we spoke to them is when will the power be back? how will customers know trade in some cases, he was very blunt, you will not know immediately.

there are a few resources online that you can check on, and of course we will keep you up-to- date. much of this will require patience, and of course a lot of safety measures. >> absolutely. the forecast is not really helping much today, because we are going to be right around the freezing for a high hike today here in the triangle. >> let's get on over to try 12, elizabeth gardner, she is joining us and you have been tracking this since 5 a.m.? we started watching this on monday -- >> fair enough >> as it was just in its infancy. now, we are still following it. yes, i have been here since the four clock hour this morning. let's take a look at our roxborough sky cam. there are some flakes lying there, but it is fairly light. we do still have some snow showers showing up on the radar, and you can see that here. we had a nice band coming
9:03 am
it's beginning to weaken a little bit. we will see more of this on and off through the remainder of the day. really on throughout the evening, you could have a across the area. we take a look at what is going on, zoom in and a couple of murphreesboro as murphysboro as you head on into eastern parts of north hampton county. we have a little snow shower just to the east of roxborough and one from lewisburg getting ready to head over toward rocky mount i wasn't. it has lightened up lighten up a little bit in the triangle area. snow from raleigh to zebulun, snow is beginning to light up a little bit. 24 south hill, 25 roxborough, town by town 28 fayetteville, 28 goldsborough and clinton, temperatures are well below freezing this morning. you do have snow flurries and snow showers in our forecast all day long. most folks will see a trace to an edge but there may be
9:04 am
and north and east of the triangle. some additional light icing, our winter storm warning in effect at 6 p.m. certainly slick roads. the winds will guest this afternoon up to 30 miles per hour which could cause additional power outages. the eastern part of our viewing area and much of eastern north carolina in a winter weather advisory, some light icing and those gusty winds. our high this afternoon only makes it to 32. it stays cold and cloudy all day, making it a little difficult to melt some of the ice that is on the roads. brian is here talking about that. you did say you saw a little bit of improvement on some of the interstates? on the understates where interstates where they have been treating it with some salt , and the plows have been heading through there all night long, and also people have been driving on them overnight. we are seeing some areas where i can see a little spray getting kicked out. we might have a little bit of improvement on some major roots. i want to underscore here that is not the general rule.
9:05 am
snow and ice covering the roads and even interstates. we expect of the neighborhood streets and secondary roads to be bad in a storm like this. even the interstates in many and many spots are in pretty bad shape. let's head out to new bern avenue and trawick road, not only are we looking at icy conditions, and of course a new bern avenue is a us highway, but still you're looking at a lot of snow and ice on the road, not only are we dealing with that we are also looking at a lot of downed trees, power lines you see this power pole snapped in half there on new bern avenue. the road is blocked right now. it's dangerous out there. we still have power lines coming down, and trees coming down in western johnston county looking at the 911 feet you regularly see reports of downed trees, here as we headed to the 9 o'clock hour. speaking of johnston county, let's head out in that direction , this is 40 and whiteoak road, that is the westbound
9:06 am
clayton bypass. you can see what appears to be some improvement there. the snow and ice on that side of wake county is not covering the interstate. however, the temperatures are at a point right now below 30 degrees where anything that looks wet still could be frozen, even on surface roads and even on an interstate like i 40. this is try on road you can see what appears to be bare pavement there it probably is not. it is probably a little glaze of ice in those areas that is what we call black ice that is invisible to you. it looks like it is wet, or does not look like anything at all. and then you get on it and you realize it is an invisible sheet of ice there. here is another area where it looks like we have seen a little bit of improvement from earlier this morning. that is 85/40 near efland over on the western side of orange county and i have seen some cars go through there that appear to be kicking up some slush and spray. i remember him previous winter storms hearing great talk about the fact that the sun is very powerful.
9:07 am
coming through that on that dark pavement does a little bit to start to break up some of that ice and snow had melted a little bit. hopefully that will work in our favor through the rest of the morning into the afternoon. however, we do not anticipate great improvements as a highway patrol has been telling us this morning, you just need to stay put. by the way, i just saw a tweet from nc state that the nc s tate/duke game is still on for this afternoon at the arena. >> that will fire up the wolfpack fans. and the duke fans as well. i just hope they are very careful making their way to the game. >> please be careful. take it slow. which is what amanda lamb has been doing all morning long. we find her now on the raleigh beltline. what has changed since the last time we checked in with you, amanda? >>reporter:well, we have been mostly on secondary roads today. we really wanted to check out the beltline because obviously this is the main artery of
9:08 am
a lot of people for the city. it looks a whole lot better than the secondary roads. that being said, you still need to take your time, and slow down when you are driving, because you -- of the highways for the most part in the city of raleigh appear to have been treated. i'm coming up on north hills area right now. you really have a pretty smooth sailing on these roads. again, that is compared to the secondary roads. you know, you still need to use caution. definitely much better looking out here on the beltline then it is on other roads that we have been driving on today. >> amanda lamb, thank you so much >> amanda gave us a great idea, that is to check on the secondary roads. how bad are they?

ra our winter weather coverage continues here on wral. >> we really have been checking in with cruise throughout the triangle, throughout the morning. team coverage with julia sims, amanda lamb, gilbert baez, brian mims, why do we check in with amanda get again >> amanda has probably seen more than anyone today, she has seen lots of downed power lines , stuck vehicles, and she is giving us further proof that the secondary roads are not in very good shape. amanda. >>reporter:very true, i have
9:22 am
so, a lot of my lifetime. we have made our way to north raleigh, we have been trying to get here all morning. we kept getting sidetracked by all of these intersections that were closed with downed trees and downed power lines. we are at six forks road we just passed 40, and as you can see, these roads are just a thick sheet of ice, and then there are the -- and then there is this layer of snow on top of it. that is deceiving because you may think snow is easy to drive in, but right underneath this is a thick layer of ice. we decided a few minutes ago, a couple of cars off the road about three-four cars off of the road, they had come out, thumbs -- the sun's up, looks great, and they spun out. we do want to mention, because we have gotten a lot of calls, text, facebook notes from people that we are going well under the posted speed limit. our camera, on the car, the go pro, in addition to my ipad
9:23 am
has a very wide angle, and it makes it look like we are going fast. right now, we are going 25 miles per hour. so, most of the time, and the secondary roads we are between 20-25 and then on the beltline we were able to go about 45. it was a little bit clearer. anyway, this is what you are looking at just really icy roads . most of them untreated and you get off of the main highway. more cars are coming out, but people need to be really c areful. >> amanda, that is six forks road, that is not just a little side street? >>reporter: no, we are at the northern part of it. we have come through downtown -- or the north chills area, and gone north on six forks. we are in the more, i guess if there is a rural part of it, we are in the more northern part of it past 540. you are right, this is a major
9:24 am
know, this is where -- what a lot of the roads look like today. if you are going to venture out, like i said, i've seen more people coming out in the last half an hour or so. many of them getting stuck. you need to be very careful. >> it is quite beautiful when you look at it on tv. >>reporter:it is. it looks like a winter wonderland. i am sure, if you are a child who lives in this area, and got enough snow to make a snowball, or take your sled and go down a hill or something, i am sure you are thrilled. but, to most people who have to get out and work, i just got an e-mail from a woman who said her son had to work at rdu today and heat had to travel quite a bit of distance to do that. give yourself some extra time if you do have to work and be out today. it took me a good 40 minutes to deice my car this morning. i left it running, and i had to chip away at it. so, you know, you definitely
9:25 am
if you have to go anywhere today on the roads. >> good advice. thank you so much. >> i mesmerized by the scenery out there. >> it is pretty. it is also deceiving at times when it comes to those roads. we are going to check and a little later on with how things
