temperatures rose nicely this afternoon so melting continued. will we have a problem with refreezing overnight though. >> crews are still working to restore power. coming up tonight how customers who need electricity to survive are coping. a message for the panthers nation from coach ron as his team prepares for super bowl 50. side streets and neighborhood roads remain covered with snow and ice and several school districts have made the call to cancel or delay classes for another day. i'm deborah morgan. >> i'm david crabtree. here's the most updated list of schedule changes for tuesday. let's take a look at this. chapel hill city schools are delayed three hours. chatham county closed. optional teacher work day. granville county schools closed, lee county as well as

closings in person county with an optional teacher work day. vance county as well as warren county schools. >> no word yet from wake county as to what may or may not happen here. if you are headed tout tonight the major interstates are clear. however as mike referenced refreezing could be an issue later and overnight. this is i-40 and 15-501 in durham county. that traffic very light today. little slush remains in the median. it's a similar scene on i-540 near ray of course and wake county traffic moving just fine. smooth sailing on i-85 at u.s. 15 near falls lake. >> no rush hour today or traffic hardly at all. now we are going to talk about the power outages still a major issue four days after the winter storm hit our region. mine men are being dispatched

duke energy says most customers have power now but hopes the power will be back on tonight. that's not so for some who depend on electricity for survival. sloan is live to explain. >> not having electricity we all know can be a major inconvenience. that's why you get so excited when you see trucks like this rolling into your neighborhood without power. there are people you need electricity to live and usually duke energy puts those folks on a priority list but not with the storm like we just had. >> it's warmer out here than it is in the house. >> there's no reason for diana and gary stout to go inside their franklin county home. they are better off staying in the car where it's warm. >> you can't tell but i got three or four layers on. i'm dressed up like a bear. >> the couple has been in the cold and dark for days because of the storm.

for gary a disabled veteran on oxygen. >> i told her years ago for better or for worse and hopefully this is the worst. >> she called duke energy about her husband's health before the storm hoping to be placed on a priority list if they lost power. >> they said they had to send me a form for the doctor to fill out and it would take 30 days after that before we got on a priority list. >> power crews have been working around the crock. they were at the bottom of the list. >> we are doing our best and i'm real sorry. the company spokesman came right out to the couple's home. >> i asked them to check into your area. >> i have checked into your account and you will be on by tonight. >> even if they were on the critical care list they would not be guaranteed faster service in the storm.

the storm when we can but it's not practical or possible. >> the couple will hunker down until the power returns. >> and we were barely out of the stout's neighborhood when we got a call from the stout's neighbor to say that the power was restored so their lights are back on tonight and we just checked duke energy's website and they are showing that there is still about 1400 people across our state without power. tonight duke energy hopes to have those folks on real soon. back to you. >> sloan let's hope so. live in raleigh, thank you. most of the area school districts were closed today. johnston county is one exception. they operated on a two hour delay despite criticism from students and parents. sky 5 was over areas in johnston county today checking out the roads and school parking lots found mostly cleared. school officials say 90% of the

felt it was appropriate to hold class today. the wake system has spent the day clearing parking lots and spreading salt on the sidewalks. nose just the parking lot those they have to worry about. some secondary streets remain icy especially in shade areas. half of the county students ride the bus traveling 83,000 miles a day. today's former temperatures have helped with melting. >> it's getting better but it was worse this morning so as you see we've got salt over here so it's starting to breakup a little bit. the coldest it's going to get is 34 so as long as we can stay above freezing hopefully we can get things going. >> as soon as we get a decision we'll keep you posted on the air and website. wake county and durham public schools have announced wake up day. all the details posted on wral.com.

link in top stories. durham is much like raleigh in that major streets are clear but secondary roads still need the work. wral ariel clay is live in durham to explain when the city is doing about it now. ariel. >> secondary roads like this one it is still snow covered but it has gotten better throughout the day. what was ice has now turned into slush. you can't blame devin for her wishful thinking. >> i was hoping to wait and see if my car is ready to drive. it's not warm enough so i'm going to have to take matters into my own hands. >> and her elbows. she had to clear the thick layer of ice dumped on her car. >> it was a matter of getting it moving and pushing it off. >> after 25 minutes of stripping it was all gone.

loaded her supplies and little girl into her car. it's her first time venturing out alone since thursday. >> i'm careful, definitely careful but trying to take extra time. >> catherine's fingers were crossed as she pulled out of her neighborhood. >> i'm skeptical my car is going to move. >> unlike her neighbors she wasn't taking any chances. she's leaving the driving to others and relying on her two feet until everything is little less icy. >> cars don't adapt very well so i'm going to wait for nature to do it's course and i'm very work. >> of course the concern is if the slush here now will turn into ice overnight. i reached out to the city of durham and they will continue to plow residential streets tonight through tomorrow to try to get them all cleared. david? >> ariel that's a perfect example of why school systems have to make the calls they do.

>> i had no idea i was having a heart attack. i really expected shoulder pain or heavy chest pain. >> a new scientific statement from the american heart association says there can be key differences between men and women when it comes to heart attack symptoms. >> there is usually discomfort somewhere in the chest area and or in the neck, jaw, back, upper stomach. it can be in either arm or shoulder. >> this is the first time the association has put out a statement on heart attacks in women which highlights women often have different kinds of heart attacks. >> your blood pressure is too high today. >> risk factors are. >> high blood pressure is a strong risk factor for heart disease among women. >> marsha had the same symptoms a year ago and another heart attack. this time she didn't wait.

like i'm home. this is from--this is a na na posted on the zoo's facebook page this weekend. zoo workers plan to reopen on saturday. >> that is pure joy playing in the snow right there. ah. >> i love it. >> that looks like so much fun. >> it's his home environment. >> mike was on a cruise for a week in a warm location and it's amazing. i was driving back yesterday coming up i-95 in johnston county and wake county saw snow. northwest the worse it was and ariel's story how much snow is still on the ground there's going to be an issue west and northwest of raleigh where you are going to run into snow and ice covered roads so be careful. at least we had good melting today. at's ahead? more melting today but watch out for icy spots in the rng.

the 60s especially for fayetteville, goldsboro, wilson more melting taking place. rain coming in on wednesday. a chilly detour but for wednesday and thursday there was talk for the potential for something frozen on thursday. right now that does not look like that's the case and talk more about that coming up. traffic is slow but again look how wet those on and off ramps are so the likelihood we could see refreezing temperatures upper 20s to low 30s. not a hard freeze. we move to 23 at the airport so not that hard freeze. the 49 and mostly cloudy at rdu the dew point upper 20s. temperatures aren't going to go lower so focus in on upper 20s low 30s in the morning. durham athletic park 53 at holly springs and far warmer in fayetteville 55 in that location at the airport and clinton and goldsboro.

look at the motion of the clouds. you can see them moving but a lot of white that doesn't move. that's the snow pack the visible satellite picture to illuminate the clouds really shows who is still seeing snow on the ground and who is not. darker shading across south carolina there is no snow there. high pressure in control that initially brought the cold air but now it's moving out and here comes our next storm system. not a lot of rain with it now but with the southerly flow off the gulf of mexico doing two things increasing moisture so far more rain developing and warming with temperatures running in the 60s or 70s right now for new orleans. 00 new orleans, 65 in dallas, 63 in memphis. some of this warmer air will come in but colder air will come in wednesday and thursday with highs back in the 40s but this coming weekend in for a treat. temperatures dramatically warm up and stay dry. we'll see where that comes up.

future cast between now and thursday. tomorrow some patchy fog in the morning and icy spots so be aware of that. clouds increasing in the afternoon becoming partly cloudy to mostly cloudy by the end of the day but here comes the next front bringing rain on wednesday in the morning a chance of rain a little blue showing up but not enough cold air to be a big problem so there may be a few flurries on the backside of this. during the day on wednesday clouds a chance of rain and during the afternoon the rain tapers off. an area of low pressure that develops in the gulf crosses florida and moves up the east coast. right now too far off shore for it to be any concern for us but it's still early in the game. we watch it and let you knew if there are any changes but right now mostly cloudy with a small chance for rain but nothing frozen this time around. by 8:00 partly cloudy it's chilly 41 light winds overnight lows upper 20s to low 30s. 32 in raleigh but snow and ice on the ground be aware it's

trapped at home and going authorities are following leads. however three men who escaped from a high security jail in california are still on the run. they managed to use cutting tools and bed sheets tied together to break out of a men's jail in orange county. this surveillance video shows the three on the roof shortly after a friday morning security check. authorities believe two of the immediate area and tools the inmate used. whether they had any help. a detroit judge has denied a request for a temporary restraining order for teachers protesting the sick outs. the district attorney is seeking an injunction from class sizes and the governor's plan to over haul the district. schools have been forced to close several times because of
